Latest Java XML technology

Hi, can anyone tell me what's the latest Java XML technology? Is there anything similar to .NET DataSet? I know SDO has a feature "changeSummary" to make the update of XML data easy. But it looks SDO is not popular now (correct me if I am wrong). Is JAXB the only popular framework for Java XML? Is it as powerful as .NET DataSet? Thanks

Dude, this is a Java forum. Do you really expect people to know .NET stuff?
JAXB is an API, not a framework. Its not popular, its part of the JEE spec which basically makes it a given to use it. You can use it to do XML binding stuff; nothing more, nothing less. It is used by several other APIs to do the XML binding stuff, like JAX-WS. When used properly you can quite effectively bind XML documents to an Object hierarchy and the other way around.
A piece of advice: if you want to do Java stuff, forget .NET exists. If you can't do that, at least stop doing that "I do it like this in .NET, how I do it in Java?" way of thinking. You have a problem which needs to be solved, go find something that works.

In WL10, when using the default TYLAR Java/XML data bindings for our web service implementation, is there a way to get the XML that was used to produce an instance of the TYLAR-generated object? I would assume WebLogic exposes an API that I could use to accomplish this. Thanks.

AFAIK, Tylar binding is for internal used (implement JAX-RPC 1.1 specification). If you want to handle Xml Databinding, you should try XmlBeans or JAXB in JAXWS.

Latest Java for OSX -- Up-To-Date? Where's new?

I sure could use answers from you Gurus out there, or pointers to where I can get the straight poop. TIA.
I use a non-Apple produced Chat application (gabbly) that I believe is written in Java. One day last month, this app suddenly lost its graphics. Some buttons became invisible, though their mouseovers were still visible, and if I wait till the mouseover shows up to show me I'm still on the invisible button, "it" will work. Other graphics work wrong, also.
I use adblock in FF, but no joy if I turn it off.
I cleared all FF cookies with "gabbly" in their names; no joy.
In Safari, the app kinda works better -- graphics are there, but some buttons work wrong.
Curiously, another Mac on the same LAN shows the app working fine under FireFox 1. (that rev UTD, OSX UTD) So it's probably some machine-dependent thingie...
I'm not a developer, just a random end-user...

The Java test at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml says that I'm "using an older version of Java technology" and that a new one, 1.5.0_07 from Apple, is available.
HOWEVER! Under the Apple Operating System of that same display, is gives my current JRE version is 1.3.1 for OSX 10.2.7.
So, how can it be possible that my 1.5.0_07 is an "older version" of Java, when the lower segment of the same URL's display offers me 1.3.1 ?
And should I downgrade from 1.5.0_07 to 1.3.1 ? To me, it looks like Apple's version of Java is more advanced than the version now on offer from java.com...
Or should I re-install the latest Java from Apple, which another string has pointed at, at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/java2se50release1.html ? This is all so confusing...

I agree, the Java version numbering could have been better implemented. Supposedly there is something called Java 2, which has been out for awhile that's included in it. Some people here might have a better answer for that:

Java XML Parser:Null Pointer exception in EntityReader

I got NullPointer Exception when trying to parse a XML file which
is pointed by a net URL, (say "http://www..."). The code causing
problem is like:

Query in Data server of XML Technology

Hello,
We are doing Database to XML Transformation.we are achieving this successfully.
But we are facing problem in XSD placeholder in target data server i.e XML Data server
First time we mentioned absolute path of XSD and got target datastore by reverse engineer XSD structure.
if i export my project and model into another machine.Then at another machine if i run my package i am getting error like
Caused By: java.sql.SQLException: As no XML and no DTD were provided, the XML schema cannot be created

My confusion is here, why every time during execution there is a need of XSD,because XSD represent the structure of XML file
And that structure ,i already imported in another machine i.e target model

if there is need , then Can we embedd XSD with importing of project and model so that whenever we export that project model in another machine ,my XSD also imported .

Is there any default location of data server of XML technology where agent will go for finding XSD ?

I haven't tried this myself but give this a go:
1. In Word, highlight the Title Row
2. Then go to Table > Repeat Header Rows. In Word 2007+ the Repeat Header Rows button is under the Layout section.
3. Save, upload and re-run.
Do the table headers now repeat?

A right XML technology for messaging

Hi,
Here is my situation:
A Java web application send messages to a user internally (message), externally (email). A message is formed with text and some application runtime attributes. Currently, these messages are hardcoded in Java source code. I would like to separate them from the code so that they are configurable. Some issues involved are text format (plain text or html), i18n (multilingual text). I need advice on what XML technology and the tool associated is right for the task. I have a look at Velocity. It seem to be overkill for the job.

My big issue is not about i18n, but to separate message text away from the source code, so that the message is configurable.

Right XML technology-library

I have some experience with XML but get easily lost in the jungle of acronyms and XML technologies out there. I have a problem to solve and would like to know to which technologies or libraries to focus. That is, if it's possible at all. The problem is as follows:
I have a big XML document, although not so big as to not to fit in memory, with structure rather flexible. I want to be able to make queries to it of the type:
Give me all elements containing element (or attribute) XXX
Give me all elements of type YYY inside elements containing element (or attribute) XXX
Give me all elements of type YYY inside elements where element (or attribute) XXX has value VVV (or less than, greater than...)

Would like to ask for all TITLEs from COMPANY = 'RCA' or all CD info from all CDs where YEAR < 1960 and PRICE < 10, etc.
I realize that this is using XML as a database, but if possible I would like to avoid having to put the data inside a database for querying, even if the database would be as flexible as the XML (I'll be adding or removing element types in the future). Adding a database to my program would be some stretch. I would love to have a java library that could be queried for that kind of info in a flexible way (the query should ideally be a string, not hard coded). I don't need complete guidelines, just names of technologies or libraries to look at. It's simply that I don't know where to start.

How relevant is Java Applet technology in 2006 for wide web deployment?

How relevant is Java Applet technology in 2006 for wide web deployment?
I'm developing a website which requires deployment Internationally to as many users as possible. Many people advise to stay away from Java applets, others say only use Java 1.1 (AWT limitation), some say use Flash, others say stay away from applets and plugins altogether.
Of course it depends on the content. I have interactive 3D content currently powered by Java 1.1 applet BUT I have been using Swing to introduce custom GUI functionality but which I know may limit compatibility. I'm torn by this whole debate and what impact it will have on the relevancy of my website.
How many users out there have browsers that will cope with my content?
Then there's the issue of all the various different browsers nowadays. I'm testing for IE and Netscape on Windows platform, but what about other browsers and OSes on other platforms? I notice that some websites have a page with tables to show users what browser is and is not compatible with their web content. How far must a web developer go to test all these things exhaustively?
Then there's the issue of a 16MB download for the latest Java plugin if a user's system is not up to date. Can all modern browsers handle Java even with the latest Java download?
Or should I just tell the user to get a compatible browser? Another 10-20MB download, depending.
Or how about Flash? That reportedly has a vast International deployment base, but do I need to pay for a Flash editor / IDE / compiler? So far I've been using freeware (HTML, Java, NetBeans, PHP, MySQL, PNG images) to achieve excellent results within my ludicrously limited budget. The Flash Player is only a 930KB download, and that is quite user friendly even if I must tell a user to get the latest version � only 2 minutes download on a 56K modem or about 15 seconds on DSL followed by a 2 second really easy install.

I know Java. I use it for apps and now applets. I get it to communicate with my server's PHP and MySQL. It works well on my machine, but will my applets work for millions of users world wide with few technical problems? Looking through Java forums I see developers struggling with Java Applets in Safari on OSX but not on Windows. Then another has problems with Applets in IE on Windows but not on Netscape. Then one browser struggles with key events . . . it's like a mine field out there and I'm struggling for clear direction.
Microsoft's support for Java has been poor. If I depend on Java Applets now and for the next year, then will they still be supported 3 or 5 years from now? Or will I have to write off this investment in Java development effort and then switch to something else? Or switch to something else now?
Does Sun Microsystems somewhere reveal how ubiquitous their JVM deployment is?
Perhaps I'm totally misinformed, but Java Applets seem to be dying out. I'd really love to hear from other active web developers out there doing stuff for wide deployment to mass markets.

Since my zwebsite is already using Java 1.1 for 3D visualization I've decided to standardize on Java 1.1 to gain maximum browser compatibility. To add another technology like Flash at this point may just complicate matters, especially for me.
I'm now converting my Swing GUI to AWT. It wastes a lot of time, but the effort should be worth it in terms of the deployment success rate - in theory at least :-)
Just imagine if Java 1 had Swing . . . dream on!
In the deployment stats noted in my first post on this thread they state that Java has 86% world wide desktop deployment. Problem is that I bet that figure only relates to Java1. I wonder what pathetic percentage is true for Java2?
Regarding the use of Java for content rich dynamic content for world world wide web browser deployment . . . I'm rather disillusioned at this point. It seems for this application Java is stuck indefinitely at Java1 and the cool things they developed after that cannot be used effectively. Please note that I am ONLY referring to wide browser deployment. For stand-alone apps and targeted web deployment (where you can reasonably expect your user to upgrade his/her system for a good reason) Java is still very cool.
As for Java WebStart: I can see the uses for it, but it just does not fit into the browser application where the general public enter your web pages and see cool content inside the essential context of your webpage. This last point is vital for any serious web site. If the object of the site is to deploy a useful app to the user (like a forex trading front-end with GUI) then use Java WebStart by all means.
After this website, I'll invest in Flash. I'm sure Flash is not without its share of issues, but it has 97% deployment of nearly the latest versions and user download/upgrade is under 1MB. On top of that it does not seem to suffer from corporate relationship woes like those between Sun and Microsoft.
After all, Flash is labelled as a 'player' and not a Virtual Machine. Mass users out there want to play rather than know about complex and bulky IT stuff.

Learning Path: Java & XML

Right now I'm learning my way through Java as a novice to programming aside from a little bit of script language knowledge. I want to start developing Web Services using Java, XML/SOAP. Being a beginner should I wait until I have a strong foundation in Java or can XML/SOAP be learned concurrently to Java?
As for specific Java technologies is ther ea specific path that should be followed? I'd like to learn JavaBeans and JSP, should one be studied before the other?

One doesn't really build on the other, so there's no required path to follow. Since XML is as OO as a scripting language gets, there's no reason you can't learn it along with Java; but using XML doesn't require a strong programming background.
As for JavaBeans and JSPs, again they're totally separate and one doesn't require the other. If you're doing a lot of GUI building and writing code you plan to reuse, learn about JavaBeans soon. On the other hand, if you're main goal is web development, you'll want to pick up Servlets and JSPs sooner.

Need Help with Java XML Pack

I Downloaded the JavaXMLPack-summer-02_01 and am a little unsure about configuration and use...
The documentation says:"
To use the Java XML Pack technologies, you need to set the home directory for each technology as follows:
JAVA_XML_PACK_HOME to the directory where the java xml pack has been installed.
JAXM_HOME to <JAVA_XML_PACK_INSTALL>/java_xml_pack-summer-02_01/jaxm-1.1_01
JAXP_HOME to <JAVA_XML_PACK_INSTALL>/java_xml_pack-summer-02_01/jaxp-1.2_01
JAXR_HOME to <JAVA_XML_PACK_INSTALL>/java_xml_pack-ummer-02_01/jaxr-1.0_02
JAXRPC_HOME to <JAVA_XML_PACK_INSTALL>/java_xml_pack-ummer-02_01/jaxrpc-1.0_01
but nothing about where to set this...

Next thing:
When I want to use the JAXM Libraries I have to set the .JAR Files as Classpath - Seems strage to me...
And now the Problem:
I compiled the StandeAlone.java Sample from "/jaxm-1.1_01/samples/standalone"
And when I start the class File I get the Error message

I have been having similar problems. I have set the variables you mentioned in my .bashrc file and set the classpath variable to include them. However the compiler still can't find them and I get a slew of NoClassDefFoundError exceptions when trying to compile code which uses the xml stuff.
The strange thing is that the classpath variable was empty before I added the java xml stuff to it so I don't know how it finds the core java classes. It gets this information from somewhere and if I could find out where this is then I could add the xml stuff to it and everything will be fine.
Any ideas on where java is getting the location of the core classes from?

That is the latest copy. It is still a good reference for getting started and contains some more advanced topics that are relevant to newer JC versions. I am not sure if a book on connected edition is relevant considering there is no real application that I am aware of. You may be able to get cards that support JC 3 classic though.

Confusion on choosing the right Java XML tehcnology

Hi there,
I have a question about Java XML. I am still confuse on whether should I choose JAXP or JAXB for XML documents processing. I need to access a the configuration values form a properties file which stored in XML format to startup an application server, the configuration values might be using while the application server is running all the time. And probably write a tool to add/delete/modify the config values in XML file. From my point of view, I think JAXB is suitable for my needs, but I'm not sure whether the DOM tree manipulation from JAXP will be useful in my application or not. Any suggestion?

When you go to the page about JAXP you will see that it says, right up front, "The Java API for XML Processing (JAXP) makes it easy to process XML data using applications written in the Java programming language." That sounds like what you want to do. And the page about JAXB says "The Java Architecture for XML Binding (JAXB) is a Java technology that enables you to generate Java classes from XML schemas." That doesn't sound like what you want to do.

Using Java XML 1.5 toolkit instead of sapxmltoolkit for xslt mappings

   We have a case whereby our xlst requires a number of customised java class functions as we are porting webmethods systems across to PI.
eg in the xslt adding

We are running sap PI 7.1 ehp1. I have been referring to a number of posts on how to complete these tasks.
namely we have implemented the example as provided in:

This only works if "Sap XML Toolkit" is enabled in the operational mapping.
Left unticked (default setting in the mapping) whenever a testcase is run I end up with the error "could not compile sytle sheet".
I would like to use the Java 1.5 xml processing capability as it is supposed to perform better than the sapxmltoolkit option and support for the latter will be discontinued in future.
Has anyone been able run the case with sapxmltoolkit enabled?
If so did you add any other libraries for java xml 1.5?

Thanks, I would have thought as much, but theres no guide on the deployment.
For now i assume this will fit into the java/ext area and Pi would need a reboot after the libraries are copied.

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.
