Latest Windows 8.1 Update Changed EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled Workaround and USB Flag Location causing problems

We have an older USB device that is charged via the USB port and needs to be in the charge state to connect to our desktop application.
Windows 8.1 introduced Enhanced PowerManagement for USB. We were able to deal with it by setting the flag EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled = 0 in Device Parameters of the HID PID entry for our device. By using an INF file, we were able to control the
configuration of new ports, when our devices was connected.
A recent update seems to have broken that:
1.) The previously installed INF file info is removed on update.
2.) Ports now configured do not have the flag and the device does not work.
Reinstalling the INF file corrects the issue for newly configured ports, but we are unable to fix ports already configured prior to the install. Here is what we see:
1.) There is no EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled = 0 in the Device Parameter registry of the newly configured ports that do work.
2.) Manually entering the parameter does not change anything - this used to work.
3.) Removing the entries not working to let them reconfigure does not seem to work. Uninstalling in Device Manager (show hidden devices), killing the registry entries etc. does not seem to have an impact.
How can we fix the botched entries? Where is the updated Windows 8.1 setting the flags, when they do work?
What am I missing?
We have a bunch of very unhappy customers and I have wasted hours on this - more time than it took me to set up the original fix!
Any help would be appreciated!

I have exactly the same problem on my MacBook Pro Retina (early 2013). After updating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 (KB2919355) the mouse cursor is invisible on the desktop. On the Lockscreen and Sign In screen the cursor is visible. My resolution is 1920x1200. I connected also another "normal" mouse device and I have the same effect.
When starting Windows in Safe mode the cursor is visible. When uninstalling the update KB2919355 everything works again.

Are you sure it was error 0604 since I never heard of that error, it does not appear in the list of errors in the following and a search of Apple's support site gets no hits. However, error 1604 is list and users have reported that error number. If 1604 is the error number the following tell yu wnat to do when you click on that error number:

If the old ID is yours, and if your new ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

Thunderbird runs very slowly after latest round of 11 updates from Microsoft, restoring computer to earlier date fixes problem.

Microsoft uploaded 11 new updates ( 7 updates for Windows 7 and 4 for Office 2010) on 9 April 2014. After automatically installing updates on my computer Thunderbird runs very slowly, i.e., every time anything is selected, Thunderbird give error "Thunderbird fails to response" which takes about 1 minute to clear. I restored computer to earlier date that did not have these updates and Thunderbird works OK.
Also updates changed default search engine in Firefox 28.0 from Google to Bing ! ! !

Appears that you are right.
McAfee was running a scan continuously. I uninstalled it. Then ran all of the Microsoft updates. Finally I reinstalled McAfee and turned off real time scanning of e-mail.
Thunderbird appears to be working OK now.

Windows 8 critical update crashed lost browser and all history and tabs how do i get old browser

Install Windows 8 Critical update; computer crashed and lost everything; Microsoft OS will not let me back into programs, keeps blocking me and gives me a temp password so I can still use PC. Had to reinstall FIREFOX, can't recover old browser and my very important tab. I can't get to backup file and Microsoft is unable to fix the problem, so I am starting from scratch. Tried to use Profile information but it contains only my current profile.
Hope you can help.

If you do not have the original profile folder and its contents, or some backup of that; there is not anything we can do to help.
*Do you have any forms of backup at all ?
*Did you sync with another device ?
I am assuming the original hard drive has been reformatted, or is totally unusable.

OneNote Windows 8.1 App Changed to Chinese and Cannot Work Out How to Change to English

Since upgrading my Surface Tablet from Windows 8 to 8.1 the OneNote app has changed to Chinese and I cannot work out how to change it back.
Everything else appears to be in English including the desktop version of OneNote 2013 and only the OneNote app appears to be affected.
The tablet is set to English UK in the regional settings and I have already tired removing and reinstalling the app but it is still in Chinese.
I have just upgraded to the Surface 2 and after signing in with my Microsoft account, the OneNote app is in Chinese on here as well.
I have tried all the settings but it is a bit difficult as I can't understand what they say.
Any help would be appreciated.

I purchased both the Surface 1 from John Lewis (department store) and the Surface 2 from PC World.
The surface 1 was fine until installing Windows 8.1 preview and this is when it changed to Chinese.
The regional settings are set correctly to UK so I am unsure how to get it back to something I can understand.
The app is in Chinese on my Windows 8.1 PCs as well at home and at work but all are set to UK. It seems to change as soon as I sign in with my Microsoft account so I don't think the issue is a surface RT issue although it may have originated from there.
I have tried the option to uninstall it from all synced PCs and then install it again but it just installs in Chinese again.
OneNote 2013 doesn't seem to have this problem and it is only the MX/App version.

Latest Windows 8.1 update under Boot Camp loses my cursor

I was having no problems running Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp on my MacBook Pro Retina (2012) with the latest Boot Camp drivers until I tried downloading Microsoft's latest major update to Windows 8.1 (KB2919355). After installing the update, I lost my cursor. The trackpad and a USB mouse both "worked" by highlighting icons and windows at random, but without a cursor I'm flying blind. It seems to be a video or screen driver issue. I chatted with Apple and spoke to Microsoft on the phone. They both suggested that I uninstall the update, which I have done. And that does bring back my cursor. The only hope is that Apple and Microsoft can work out this problem between the Apple drivers and the Microsoft update. I understand that this latest Microsoft update is a prerequisite for future Microsoft updates, so I hope they straighten this out. Is anyone else suffering from this problem?

Latest Windows 8.1 update doesn't let me login, "Please wait..." is constantly there

Last night (April 20, 2015), I performed a Windows update on my HP Enxy x360 2-in-1, model # 15-u010dx. After performing the update, the computer restarted. After restarting, my wallpaper came up (not my Desktop wallpaper, but the one that you see previous to logging in) and when I dragged the wallpaper up it was a black screen that said "Please wait...". I left it like that for a pretty long time, probably about 20 minutes, before I first restarted it. Then I left on a few other times before restarting each time... maybe a total of about 3-4 restarts last night.
No matter what screen I'm on, the wall paper or "please wait", there is no response to CTRL+ALT+DEL or to Shift+F8 as I've read in other forms; there's no response to any key strokes I've tried. One thing to note is that on the wallpaper screen, at the bottm left corner it shows my battery power and it also shows the internet as not connected - it doesn't seem to detect a network. After the last Windows update, I've had to manually disable/enable my wireless card every time I opened up my laptop - it's somethign i've looked up on other forums and there doesn't seem to be any type of resolution for it. But that's not the problem... the main problem is being stuck on the "please wait" screen. Anyone have any tips or solutions???

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read about your HP ENVY x360 - 15-u010dx Notebook and getting one moment screen or please wait screen on startup. Try performing a hard reset. This document includes helpful information on how to.
When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.
You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook.

New update changed menu size and now have to scroll to see all. Reducing size of menu

The new update has changed the menu size of tool bars and any menu screen opened. Now have to scroll down and sideways to look at it. Can not fit to the screen.
How do you change the resolution of the menu boxes and tool bars?
My screen resolution is 1920x1080
The menu/tool bars font size I can read from a mile away.
Everything was fine until the update.
I'm running windows 8.1 pro with all the latest updates installed.
Even when opening Adobe the screen showing open what use to be small and take about 1/4 screen. now it takes the whole screen and only just fit on the screen.
I can not find anywhere to adjust display size of the tool bars and menus.
Does anyone know how to overcome the very large displaying of all tool bars and menus in the latest release?

This shows the size of tool bars to the actual program. They use to fit on the screen.
This shows the preferences box extend to the right under the windows task bar and to close down or select anything under the task bar I have to grab and slide it side ways.
This shows the setup crop box extending off the bottom of the screen and there is no way to scroll down or to grab and move the box up so the controls I cant get to (OK or Cancel or page range etc)

HT4915 iTunes Match not updating Changes from Library and reverting to original data WHYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!?

How do I keep iTunes Match from De-Organizing my music? I have spent hours organizing my music ratings, info, and deleting duplicates only to quit iTunes and find out that it reverts back to the original when it starts up and syncs with Match. It first de-organized hours worth of my time. Then I tried it again with iTunes match off only to find out that once you turn it on it de-organizes it again!! I have iTunes match turned off on all my devices. HELP!!

Oh let me elaborate some more as my frustration kept me from being clear. I updated my library (which is of significant size) with different ratings, genre and deletion of duplicate songs. While iTunes Match was on. I closed the ITunes program and, later once I re-opened it it asked if it connect to the internet like usual and right in front of my eyes reverted what I had updated back to before I updated it.
I never had this issue before except for when I first upgraded my macbook and copied the music files straight from the iTunes folder from a backup disk which did not save any of my ratings.
I then modified a couple of songs again, closed the I-Tunes application, opened it again, and saw it revert it again.
I turned iTunes Match off on all my devices and modified some songs, restarted iTunes and the changes stayed.
Something with the "Cloud" is not allowing these changes to remain permanent. Once a change is made to a file it is timestamped right? So why is the cloud and computer not following the latest timestamp?
I have finished organizing a sizable amount of music and am now worried about turning Match on again in fear that it will screw up my entire library.
I do this about once every 5 years or so where I spend a lot of time organizing my music, photos, etc... I just wish that for once I would have technology that wouldn't make it a nightmare.
Side note: I am bilingual and recently changed my computer language from English to Portuguese. So iTunes thinks its totally cool to change the genre of only the songs that are played to the portuguese spelling of the genre, which practically duplicates all my genre. Thats pretty annoying. Just leave the freaking music metadata language alone dudes if the artist speaks english the metadata should be in english in my opinion. Or at least have this auto language update as an option under preferences one could opt out of.

How do I save project and update changes in MAC and extternal drive

I make music on my IMAC> I have an extrenal hard drive for extra storage and backup.
Say I make Song A and save it onto my docs in the Mac.....how do I create a backup of that project to be placed in the exteranl drive, and in future sessions, I will make changes made to SONG A, and be able to update the backup copy with the changes to the song?
Similarly, I want to have all my pictures in the MAC and backup of all pictures in the drive. But when I bring ine new pcitures I want to be able to store new pics in both MAC and external drive in one snap

One solution is to wait until next year for Leopard. The Time Machine features seems to do what you want.
I doubt you can set up a RAID-1 volume with an external drive, nor would you really want to given the slower interface to the external drive.
That only really leaves backup software. I'm sure there are lots of free or inexpensive backup/synchronization tools. I use RsyncX, but it's not the most intuitive tool for the uninitiated.

We have non admin users on Windows 7. They change the homepage and it works for that session. When they close the browser, and restart it again the default homepage is shown.

Windows 7 Sp3. Using Firefox 7.01
Non admin users.
Can change homepage to whatever they like and it will work.
BUT when they close firefox and open it again the home page goes back to default setting

Update.
This looks to be a mozilla.cfg setting. If I take out the pref("browser.startup.homepage","ourwebpage");
it loads the basic firefox "FirstPage"
How do I get around adding a default homepage that can be changed by the user?
I have tried adding
defaultPref.. .. then the webpage info.. BUT it retrurns a Failed to read the configuration file. Please contact your system administrator.
Do I need to create a prefs.js file?
And if I do how do I get it to work for each new user that logs into that machine?
