Layout mode in Dreamweaver CS3. Can't draw table

I did the same exact thing i do in dreamweaver 8, but in cs3,
it's now working.
I went to layout mode and with a blank page and the draw
table button is grayed out.
what do i do to use it. I'm already in layout mode.

Get out of Layout mode for starters.
In my opinion, there are three serious problems with Layout
Mode -
1. Perhaps most importantly, it sits between you and *real*
HTML tables,
and fools you into believing that concepts like "layout cell"
and
"autostretch" really mean something. They do not. As long as
you use
Layout Mode, you'll never learn one of the most important
things for new web
developers - how to build solid and reliable tables.
2. Actually, #1 wouldn't be *so* bad, except that the code
that is written
by Layout Mode is really poor code. For example, a layout
table contains
MANY empty rows of cells. This can contribute to a table's
instability.
In addition, if your initial positioning of the table's cells
is a bit
complex,
Layout Mode will throw in col- and rowspans aplenty as it
merges and splits
cells willy-nillly to achieve the pixel-perfect layout you
have specified.
Again,
this is an extremely poor method for building stable tables,
because it
allows
changes in one tiny cell's shape (i.e, dimensions) to ripple
through the
rest
of the table, usually with unexpected and sometimes
disastrous consequences.
This is one of the primary reasons for the final result's
fragility - read
this -
http://apptools.com/rants/spans.php
3. The UI for Layout Mode is beyond confusing - many options
that you might
want to use are inaccessible, e.g., inserting another table,
or layer onto
the page.
I can understand the new user's desire to use this tool to
make their life
easier,
but the cost is just too heavy in my opinion.
To make good tables, keep it simple. Put a table on the page,
and begin to
load your content. If you would want a different table
layout, instead of
merging or splitting cells, consider stacking tables or
nesting simple
tables instead, respectively.
And above all, do not try to build the whole page with a
single table!
To read more about this approach, visit the DW FAQ link in my
sig, and run
through the table tutorials.

  • Help! Sometimes Dreamweaver CS3 can't see my .css file

Once a day or so dreamweaver cs3 can't see my .css file. So
all my files that I am working with turn to poop. To fix I have to
close each file and re-open. Then my .css returns and all my files
are how they should be. Anyone else ever have this problem?

That I do not know - I've never looked. From the styles
panel, I do know that it does not completely disapear - it shows
the .css - just all the rules are missing. I will look next time.
Usually only happens when multiple files are open. Thanks

  • Dreamweaver CS3 Can't Render My Fancy-Pants CSS

    Hi everybody,
My company does CSS/XHTML design. I think we do pretty good
stuff— of course we're still learning, but we do OK. We're
currently in the midst of a site redesign for Haverford College,
and this time we're going all the way: pure CSS, tableless, XHTML
strict if we can manage it.
I have used DW MX 2004 since, um, 2003, and have had no
reason to upgrade. But now that we're doing pure CSS layouts, they
tend to show up wonky in MX 2004, so I'm planning to upgrade to
CS3. I am working with the trial version now, and I'll be damned if
the display of the site isn't WORSE than it is in MX 2004.
This wouldn't be a big deal, as I usually work in the code
anyway, but DW CS3 is about to be approved by the client as the
standard method of having administrators do site updates. This
means every admin at Haverford's going to open up their page, look
at this, go "oh, no, my site's b0rked," and try to fix it. Disaster
    will ensue.
    Here is the evidence.
The home page is browsable at
    http://haverford.demo.babywhale.net/.
As you can see, it validates (transitional for now, as
there's some mockup content in there). It also looks consistent
across FF, Safari, and IE6 and 7. (We'll look at other browsers
    later in the dev process.)
Now check out how horribly screwed up it looks in DW CS3:
    http://www.whitewhale.net/screenshot/dw.png
    http://www.whitewhale.net/screenshot/scroll_to_right.png
We are doing some sort-of-fancy float-based layout in there,
but man, if IE6 can read it, why can't Dreamweaver?
Can anyone offer any advice? I'm starting to sweat this one a
little. I figure my options are either (a) go back to a table,
    which would cause at least one of my employees to quit in protest;
or (b) spend a lot of time tweaking the CSS so that it shows up
properly in DW, which would be the most annoying
browser-compatibility debug EVER; or (c) create a bunch of
DW-specific tools (like design-time stylesheets, and so forth)
meaning that the admins would have to do a lot of custom
configuration along with the DW CS3 install. Or (d) tell the client
we have to find another solution besides DW because of our fancy
layout, which they're certainly not going to be happy with.
OK, I've blabbed long enough. If anyone has any ideas,
similar experiences, or suggestions about which of the preceding 3
options I should go for, please let me know. Thanks!
    Jason

    Another option:
    (e) Turn off CSS Style Rendering in DW Design View:
View > Style Rendering > Display Styles
    Also available on a toolbar:
View > Toolbars > Style Rendering
This gives you a view of the semantic structure of your page
    which is
    fully editable.
    Hope this helps,

  • Dreamweaver CS3- Can't activate after reformat of hard drive

    Hello
I had to reformat my hard drive due to a virus and made note of all my serial numbers.
I put Dreamweaver CS3 back on laptop with disc and it accepts my code but then I have to phone to activate it fully.
I then get a message on  the phone telling me to go to adobe.com/go/activation, I can then do nothing there.
It tells me to click help in dreamweaver and activate from there but I can't get past an activation screen to get there.
Please help as I need to work on my website.
    TIA Ian

I know CS2's server has been deactivated due to some unnamed "technical problem".
As for the OP, I would uninstall and run the cleaner tool then try again. The cleaner tool is available here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
You "may" also benefit from trying the install this way, just make sure to follow ALL of the instructions...

  • Moved the "Connections" folder, now Dreamweaver CS3 can't find MySQL connection...

    Hi,
Dreamweaver creates a "Connections" folder in the site root
where all database connection files are stored. I want to move this
folder to another path but then DW can't find the connection (for
    example in admin/includes/Connections).
How can I tell DW the new path of the "Connections" folder so

  • In Dreamweaver CS3, can I save to Test AND Production FTP Servers when I press save the document?

Hi, and thank you for reading this.
I've setup a production and test FTP servers in Dreamweaver CS3. It is either saves to production or test server when I click COMMAND+S (CONTROL on PC), but I'd like teh file to be saved on both simultaneously. Persssing Sync the Servers won't work since the servers are not mine and they a bit different, teh files are not the same. I just would like to be able to save 1 file at a time in both production and server with one click.
I've been searching the Interenet but could not find anything other than basic FTP setup. Any help would be appreaciated. Thanks!
    Anton

Hi John, first of all thank you for replying!
The reason why I would like to have Dreamweaver to save to both servers Test and the Production at the same time is because it would save me a lot of time keeping both servers more or less in sync. I have to keep both Test and Production servers syncronized, but only wihtin a specific content. While I test my design I do use Test server, but then the hassle begins when I am asked to make changes to the content.
For example, I have a content page called books.html. I first built it on a Test server. Then switched to the tab called Remote, connect to the Remote Server, and save it. Very simple.
However, then I need to create 10 more pages, lets call them books1.html, books2.html, and so on. Again sync them with the Remote server.
All is great, but then my boss comes and say, hey there is a mistake on these files: books3, books4, books7, and books8. Please change the text content on those. So, I know the pages are working fine, I just need to update the text on both Test and Remote servers.
So at this point I have to open these 4 files, change the text, then SAVE ALL to Test server. Then, I switch to Remote tab, go back to files press any key and 'Delete' keys so that Dreamweaver would see the change in file so that it would be able to save it. Then again 'SAVE ALL' to the Remote server.
This is happening very OFTEN. It would save me so much time and brain power remembering which files I should sync if I am in a hurry and jump from one project to another, losing track of small changes in files when there are a lot of .html files.
CMS is only in development now so I have to work with what I got. As to regard to backups, I use Time Machine so I am set with that. Plus I use MAMP. So basically I first use MAMP for testing, then upload changes to the Test server with all the BIG databases, and only then to Remote (production) with real Database. However, this is only when I develop new pages, very often I just need to modify what's already has been created. So that's why a feature like Save to BOTH servers (Test and Remote) would make a big difference to me.

Not really. What dreamweaver does is write code in a file in
    the
correct palce with all of the common augments & stuff.
    Then when you
want to change something it looks for stuff formatted a

When it is not formatted a certain way, you are on your own.
While a little agravating dreamweaver does a whole bunch of

  • Dreamweaver CS4 - Can't see table cells and borders

Hello you all.  I just started using CS4 and whenever there is a white background I can't see any of the table cell or main borders.
I went to View>Visual Aids>Table Borders and it is on, but I can't seem to find the area I need to change the color to view it on white.

I just remember the previous versions would allow you to change the dotted line color that indicated the table and cell borders.
Must say I can't ever remember that being a preference in any previous version of DW.
Sadly, it looks like I will be using tables to set up my site.  Haven't adopted CSS as much as I'd like at this point.
Now's as good a time as any to start with CSS from the ground up.

  • PiP layout mode

from prior threads i've seen that the PiP mode in WebCamera was given up on, and i can only seem to set side by side layout mode anyway.
is PiP mode going to be available in the spark version of LCCS? if not, can one the of developers let me know how i would go about subclassing WebCamera to ensure that the publisher's video is not added to the WebCamera layout?  i've tried a few things, such as setting sbsSubscriber.webcamPublisher = null, and removing the publisher's video forcefully from the display list, but it still seems to appear.
or any tips on how i would go about allowing PiP mode to be set in WebCamera so that i can then muck about with the layout of the publisher's video manually.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 Layout Mode Cell Paddig

    Working in Layout Mode.
Create two cells of different width, fixed size.
Insert text in both, fonts are different.
Place one cell above the other.
Always too much space between adjacent cells even though the cell layout lnes are touching.
It seems as if the cells have a default padding value for text? This is never a problem when the cell content is an image.

Don't use Layout Mode.  It wreaks havoc to table code.  Thank goodness Adobe removed Table Layout Mode from CS4.

I just installed the new Studio CS3 on my Mac , and I have

Layout Mode has been removed from the Insert bar because it
    produces
such poor quality code. The best advice to you is to learn

HTML and CSS. You'll then find Dreamweaver a lot easier to
