Leak Monitor displays many memory leak alerts

Firefox uses too much memory and I installed Leak Monitor extension, suggested by Firefox Support pages.
Now when I open the browser or browse it throws out many "Reclaimed Leak Alert" and "New Leak Alert" alerts.

  • IsJRockit Memory leak detector API available ?

I would like to write up a JAVA client to gather heap information, things like number of instances and memory size of given object(s). These info can be displayed by memory leak detector, so there has to be an interface. my question is that is this API available for me to use? what kind of license if any I need to purchase if I intend to use my client in production?
    thanks in advance.

Yes, JVMTI is a native interface and requires a non-java library. It's probably not a good idea to try to monitor a Java application by running more Java code in the same JVM because of the interference you create.

  • Memory leak when using DB_DBT_MALLOC in CDB.

    Hello!
    Recently when I'm using Berkeley DB CDB and set the value Dbt DB_DBT_MALLOC, I noticed that the app's memory keeps growing during the db.get while;
I found that many codes on the internet use the syntax free(value.get_data()), but when I tried to free the value.get_data(), I always got an interruption error.
It's OK when I'm using the DB_DBT_USERMEM flag. So I just get very confused about the DB_DBT_MALLOC and DB_DBT_REALLOC.
And also, I wonder why there's no memory leak problem when we use the single thread BDB. I think BDB cannot free the value.data pointer too in single thread before the app finish using it, then why our apps don't need to free the data afterwards?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

You should use free() to free the DBT memory allocated via DB_DBT_MALLOC. You should do that after each Db::get() operation (and of course after finishing processing/using the data), otherwise you will loose the pointer to the memory previously allocated if you happen to reuse the DBT with DB_DBT_MALLOC (the data field will point to a new memory address).
Alternatively you could use DB_DBT_REALLOC or DB_DBT_USERMEM.
Note that there are small structures that BDB creates in the environment regions that only get freed/cleaned when the environment is closed.
If you suspect that there is a memory leak inside the BDB code, make sure you rebuild Berkeley DB using the following configuration options (along with the others you use) when building: enable-debug, enable-umrw. Than, run the program under a memory leak detection utility, like Valgrind (allow the application to open and close the BDB environment) and see if there are any leaks reported.
If memory leaks are reported, then put together a small stand-alone test case program that demonstrates the leaks, and post it here.

I setup logdir, datadir and envdir into different directories with
the functions set_data_dir and set_log_dir.I created two directories
under the datadir and created more than 100 sub-directories
respectively for the two dir, where the 2000 databases located.By the way, even though it doesn't seem likely to be the cause of the
memory leak, you should still fix this illegal usage of subdirectories
before we get much further investigating. We might as well eliminate
any possible source of problem, no matter how unlikely it seems.
Also, just as an experiment, I would be very tempted to try running
again without using any separate directories. In other words, don't
call set_data_dir or set_log_dir at all, and just let everything be
put into the one single directory. If that changes the results, that
will be a big clue to help us know where to look for the problem.
I'am writting a demo , but it take time.
i will reply later .Thank you. Take your time -- we'll be here.

  • How can i detect "Memory leak" with large LabVIEW projects.

    Hi,
I have a huge LabVIEW application that runs out of memory after running continuously for some time. I am not able to find out the VI that is hogging up memory. Is there any tool that dynamically detects the VI that is leaking memory.
Or, is there a tool or a way to identify the critical areas which can be potential culprits that is leaking memory.

But this will just give me the amount of memory used by the VIs and not the amount of memory that is not getting released.
And where is the problem about that? Just try to find what VIs keep increasing in memory size. That are the culprits. If you have real memory leaks, meaning there is memory that is not managed by LabVIEW directly but for instance by a DLL somewhere and that DLL looses references to memory, so it goes really lost, then the only way to find that is by successively exclude functionality in your application until you can find the culprit.
There is no other simple way to find out about who is loosing memory references than by doing debugging by exclusion until the problem disappears. The only way to speed this up, which quite often works for me is doing an educated guess, about what components are most likely to do this misbehaviour.
Not knowing anything about your application and if you are talking about memory hogs (fairly easily identifiable by the mentioned Performance and Memory monitor) or actual memory leaks, it is hard to tell how to go about it. Memory hogs are usually the first thing I suspect escpecially with software I inherit somehow from people from whom I'm not sure they know all the ins and outs of LabVIEW programming.
If a leak seems likely the first culprit usually are custom DLLs (yes even DLLs I have written myself), then NI DLLs such as DAQmx, etc. and last there come leaks in LabVIEW itself. This last category is very seldom but it has happened to me. However before going to scream about LabVIEW having a memory leak you really, really should make sure you have very intensivly researched all the other possibilities. The chance that you run into a memory leak in LabVIEW, while not impossible, is so small compared to the other ways of causing either a memory hog or running into a leak in an external component to LabVIEW, that in 99.9% of the cases where someone screams about a LabVIEW memory leak, he is simply wrong.

  • Solution for addons with memory leaks needed! (check / mark them)

The Problem with Firefox is that there are a vary of plugins from other developers, but it could not be that users have to live with growing memory usage or memory leaks by these addons. This gives also Firefox itself a bad impression and I think there should be a solution to stop the trend because as a user I can not always identify what's the problem now and why the firefox-process gives no memory free but it makes firefox partially unusable if I have to open more than a few tabs.
In my opinion also popular extensions that are used by a lot of people still have memory leaks or even the addon-developer does not know that his addon has one.
Is there no possibility that firefox helps, that addons can't produce so many memory leaks or otherwise Mark them in the Addon repository if they have leaks or memory problems?!

Being a rookie, I thought memory leaks weren't
something that java developers had to worry about. No managing memory is what you don't have to worry about.
That doesn't mean that your code still can't have memory leaks in it.
Now I'm starting to get java.lang.outOfMemory
Exceptions. My application just keeps eating up more
more ram until.... kaboom! The garbage collector can only clean up stuff that is no longer being 'used'. If you hold references to stuff that you no longer use, then you are creating a leak.
    >
I think I get the ram back when the java app exits.
So I don't know, if this is technically a memory leak
or not. But It's a problem; Is there some way to
explicitly call the java garbage collector and then
    recover from a OutOfMemoryException?
As I pointed out above, the garbage collector collects garbage. It isn't garbage until there are no more references. Leaks are caused by holding onto references even though they are no longer needed. The GC can't do anything about that.
I would appreciate any responce. (even if it's just a
    one liner)
Since it sounds like you are creating a professional application I would suggest that you buy either JProbe and/or OptimizeIt and run your app through them. They will find memory leaks. And as an added benifit will also allow you to determine the bottlenecks in your application.

  • How to configure license file for Memory Leak tool and WL Server 9.2?

(I posted to general JRockit forum before realizing existence of this forum which is probably more applicable.)
    Here's our problem:
Running latest version of WL 9.2 MP3 and JRockit Mission Control 3.0.1
Able to run Mission Control, and connect to the WL Server and to run View Console with no problems.
I can't get Memory Leak tool to run because it complains about needing a license file.
First I tried with off the shelf WL 9.2 MP3.

  • Memory Leak Issue in OBIEE 11g

    Hi,
We have OBIEE 11.1.1.5 installed on a 32-bit Windows Server. We had almost 10GB of free space yesterday, but after a few users logged in, the free space started coming down until we were left with no space at all.
Since then we have removed all the files that we could and created more and more space, but OBIEE seems to be eating it all up. I have seen a few posts for such issues with the Linux Systems. Has anyone faced this with windows? Also, is there any solution for this.
    Thanks,

    Hi Naman,
Oracle has provided set of patches to avoid memory leaks.
    1) For memory leak with OPMN, apply the following patches:

  • Memory leak in LR.

I'm getting what appears to be a memory leak in LR. Is anyone else experiencing this ramp of memory usage as viewed in Task Manager. I have 32GB of DDR3 installed and LR takes it all and want's more. The ramp peaks with all of physical memory allocated to LR (~28GB) and a total of ~47GB allocated to the app. Once it hangs out in slowmageddon for awhile it drops back down to around 13GB and restarts the ramp (~ 30seconds or so) to full allocation again.

  • How can memory leaks occur?

    Hi,
I was just wondering how a memory leak can occur in Java. The garbage collector is supposed to free up all unused variables, so under what circumstances can it happen?

This is not technically a "memory leak". I've seen
this called "loitering objects", which conjures upa
vivid picture: objects hanging around with nothingto
do...I think it's the classic java memory leak. A bug in
a program that prevents the freeing up of memory that
it no longer needs.Yes, but it's not what is traditionally termed a memory leak.
A real memory leak is memory that's claimed by the program but no longer accessible to the program for freeing up.
That can in Java (where what we call a program isn't a complete program but runs inside a virtual machine which handles memory allocation and deallocation) only happen if there's a flaw in the JVM itself which causes errors in memory deallocation (so most likely a flaw in the garbage collector).
In Java the objects you create are always out there somewhere where something can reach them so as to prevent them from being available to the garbage collector.
Different cause, same effect in that in both cases memory isn't getting freed for reuse.

  • Memory Leak in Preview.app when switching Display Profiles

I found a weird memory leak in Max OS X Preview.app, which manifests itself when Display profiles (color calbration) is change. I wonder if anyone else can reproduce my experience.
    1. Open up "System Preferences" -> "Displays", switch to the "Color" tab. You'll need at least 2 available profiles in the list. (If you only have 1, you can create another using "Calibrate..." button to launch Display Calibration Assistant.
    2. Open an image file in Preview.app.  The larger, the better. Zoom in full size to maximize the effect of the bug. I repro'ed easily with this image: http://www.donporter.net/NewSchool/Color/Examples/Printer%20Test%20file.jpg
    3. Open up "Activity Monitor.app", and click on Preview to highlight it, so you can watch its memory usage.
    4. Switch back to "Diplays" Preference Pane. Using the arrow keys, toggle up and down between two different Display profiles.
4a. At the same time, watch Preview's "Real Mem" in Activity Monitor, as well as the total "Active" memory.
    5. Each time you switch profiles,  Preview consumes more Active/Real memory, about 25MB per switch in my case. This continues until all physical memory is consumed, and then (I presume) starts swapping virtual memory to disk.
    6. Bring Preview to  foreground, and all the profile-induced memory usage is freed.
    Weird, wild stuff.

Could it be possible that this is just the OS holding the memory for the app until another process requires it?  Do you find that the memory increase eventually causes the app to become unstable?
It might be best to open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com.  When adding the bug, please include any source code, project or installer that will help us reproduce the issue internally.  If you'd like to keep your code private, feel free to email it directly to [email protected]  Once entered, please post back with the URL so that others effected can add their comments and votes.

  • When firefox crashes from a memory leak why can't you display the offending tab? Enhancement: a task manager like tab manager showing usage per tab / extension.

I typically keep many windows with several tabs open. It is possible that this causes more crashes since the number of pages multiplies any effect most users with less pages/tabs would experience. I have been having problems with Firefox crashing Using the windows task manager I have looked into this issue monitoring lots of variables. Bottom line the crash is caused by increasing memory usage possibly caused by the flash add on which is doing many IO reads on at least one offending page/tab. Could some sites be using flash to read from my disk without permission and there is a memory leak in either flash of the code the sites uses? I have searched the web for a task manager like add-on for Firefox tabs that would allow me to determine the offending page/tab/add-on/extension. It seems like a great idea which has not been implemented. Since I am a developer I would be happy to implement, but would like some guidance since my knowledge of your product is only at the user level.

There is currently about:memory page which is being actively developed. A "task manager"of sorts is also in the works AFAIK. If you want to help out, your best bet is to find the applicable bug in Bugzilla. If you have the coding skills I can help get you in touch with a mentor - just let me know.

  • Possible Memory Leak, many instances of macromedia.jdbc.oracle.OracleConnection, serviceFactory

I'm using a plug-in for Eclipse to help identify possible memory leaks however we are having trouble interpreting the results.  The top, and pretty much the only, suspect is this...
7,874 instances of "macromedia.jdbc.oracle.OracleConnection", loaded by "coldfusion.bootstrap.BootstrapClassLoader @ 0xf935218" occupy 604,781,904 (71.02%) bytes. These instances are referenced from one instance of "java.util.HashMap$Entry[]", loaded by "<system class loader>"
Any ideas what could cause this many instances?  How do we track this back to a particular cfm or cfc?  Do these number seem high or is that normal?  The system in question normally only has 30-60 concurrent users.
The one item I'm a little skeptical of is the use of the "coldfusion.server.ServiceFactory" and "coldfusion.sql.QueryTable" objects.  We use them for 1000s of different queries, even queries within large loops.  Could these be the problem?  Each time we need to execute a query we do a createObject for each of these objects, when done we close the connection.  I recently found a similar example where they close the recordSet first and then close the connection, we are not closing the recordSet.  Any help at all is much appreciated.

It could simply be caused by the obvious: a query or queries making a large number of connections and/or consuming large resources on the Oracle database. Use Eclipse to search your application folder for queries. Can you identify any queries that could be the culprit? Is there a loop containing a method or an instance of a component that queries an Oracle database?
What's your Coldfusion  version? If you're on CF8 or CF9 then the server monitor (in the Coldfusion Administrator) might tell you the process responsible for the high consumption.
