Learning curve for a non techie-Business Catalyst. Two specific questions.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for reading. I am a non techie who is looking at website development as a secondary skill.ie. having the know how to atleast relay my ideas to web developers and ideally to be able to tweak and in the end able to create my own websites.
In this regard, I feel Business Catalyst is an excellent tool, for people like me which mitiagtes the knowledge of coding to an certain extent. I am currently going through some of the content listed in the forums. Is there a book that provides end to end detailed steps of all the implementation to complete a fully functioning website and how much is the learning curve in this regard?
Also,
Business Catalyst offers all in one features, is it possible to use 3rd party in place of default tools for specific function, say use wordpress for blog and a different email marketing service?
Have a good one.
Thanks
Satish

I personally would tend to prefer wordpress for a small non-commercial website/blog. Its ecosystem of plugins is far more diverse than BCs and you get direct access to the code if you want. BC's blog and forum modules seem somewhat like afterthoughts designed by marketers for marketing, and there's some unevenness to the way they implement what HTML and templates you have access to and what you don't in different context, so to a degree wordpress gives you more fine-grain control over a site.
The transverse of this is that with open source software you don't necessarily have the quality control or guarantee of long-term maintenance that you might with BC. Business Catalyst is far more initially optimized for business (obviously) and its servers can likely experience a higher load and greater uptime than you might get on a typical hosting service with wordpress.
Wordpress is kind of notorious for being hackable, mostly because of its ubiquity, although if you work on it it can be secured to a reasonable degree I think -- I'm not aware of any security issues regarding Business Catalyst, apart from recent issues with the captcha and spam which might have been resolved with Akismet and Recaptcha (both of which you can also get on Wordpress obviously) but personally I don't like having all of my accounts linked with a single Adobe username/password.
But then again, I have to trust that Adobe has their **** together and there isn't some festering zero-day sitting at the heart of all of it because the price you pay for playing in BC's sandbox is just that -- it's their sandbox. They're not releasing the code. If you can't change it with an existing module setting or can't hack around with with javascript then complaining until they fix it's your only option.
In short, I think it depends on your needs. Neither is entirely the wrong answer, and both have their issues. I've been just as frustrated with some of the rendering bugs and limitations in BC as I have with the way Wordpress (IMHO) overdoes abstraction while simultaneously sticking with its horrendous code-and-content mixing template style. If you have inventory and need to push stock and don't really care about mucking around with server-side code or anything really complex than BC will probably work for you, and of course there are always sites like bcgurus and these forums to help out with edge cases.

Prior to updating flash player, you must first uninstall all previous versions.  Make sure you are downloading from the proper Adobe website = Adobe Flash Player Software
    Flash Player Uninstaller
Repair permissions and restart your computer after the installations.

  • Learning Curve for Rules - coming from HFM 9.3.3 to 11.1.2 Cal Mgr

We are currently are on 9.3.3 for HFM, Planning, and Essbase and contemplating an upgrade to 11.1.2.2. In the documents for 11.1.2.2, I read that we will have to migrate to calc manager for the rules. We are currently on the classic versions for each application rather than EPMA.
Whats the learning curve for moving to calc manager? Are people taking a class on it or picking up on their own?

    Hi all,
I just completed an installation of 11.1.2.2 and I am testing various applications in order to assess the situation and propose to my clients.
Calculation manager is not the only way to maintain your rule file. As I have seen Oracle has discuntinued the Rule Editor but you can use any notepad to edit your rules (Notepad ++ for example) and load the rule file Workspace.
I am not really impressed from calculation manager yet. Definately in one of the following versions we will have to migrate all the rule files but I do not believe that we can do that in this version. For example in my files there is a huge issue of displaying the variables....

  • CSM For Dreamweaver Site with Business Catalyst

I am looking for a way to add a simple CMS to a few sites I have created in Dreamweaver CS5.5.  Can I "convert" a site built in Dreamweaver into a Business Catalyst site so I can use the CMS feature?

    Hi,
Yes this is possible as you can build the site and choose the "start from scratch" option which the system will create a blank site.  Then you can upload all your current page/content/files in DW using FTP.
Once you create the blank site follow the FTP guide for login details and you should be up and running once your files are all loaded.

  • Bought my first Mac and am curious about the learning curve for FCE HD

After 30+ years in the DOS/Windows/PC world, I've ordered my first Mac -- a Mac Pro -- with Final Cut Express HD.
I was wondering if other switchers could give me an idea of the kind of learning curve I'm looking at. I have used Sony Vegas Video almost exclusively for the past 5-6 years.
    Thanks!

I have no experience with Vegas so don't know what the similarities and differences will be.
People like Tom Wolsky (the main contributor to this forum) will be able to advise you on that.
I came from Premiere 6.5 and found the transition reasonably quick and pain-free.
I would suggest that you get an editing workshop book. Tom has written several but of course you will need FCE 3.5.
He guides you easily step by step from the complete basics (connecting the camera etc.) to a high level of editing skill.

While you are there, take a look at the rest of his site, which has a useful FAQ etc.

  • How steep is the learning curve for InDesign?

    5-1
I am a book author and previous works are out of print. I have scanned and digitized the books but need to revise and re-print several that are filled with color photos, using on-dermand technology. SOem of these books will also be pub;ished as e-books with embedded features like videos. Is it silly for me to try to learn how to lay out and prepare for printing a 200+ page book, or is the learning curve so steep that I am better off hiring an agency to do this work? I have never used Pagemaker so this is a whole new experience for me. Need advice PLEASE!  THANKS to all - Joel

Do you enjoy solving puzzles (page layout is often about fitting too much stuff into too little space, and making it look good), are you a little geeky (InDesign is a very complex piece of software, and you need to understand the technical stuff as much as the artisitic to be really successful) and do you have experience working with images (you mentioned a lot of photos)? Would you consider the challenge of learning the software fun or a pain?
Any reasonbly bright person (and I hve no reason to think you aren't at the very least reasonably bright) can learn to use InDesign, but if you are doing so only because you think you "have to" you'd probably be better off hiring a pro. On the other hand, if you like a challenge and want to put a few weeks or even months into learning what you need to know, then go for it. Aside from books, you'll find some free tutorials on the web, good, but not free, tutorials at lynda.com, possibly some good classes at your local community college or adult education, and plenty of free advice right here when you get to the point where you have more complex questions.
I used to teach InDesign at my local community college. We offered regular semester-long courses which were worthwhile and some six-hour classes that were a joke. I teach the production staff of the student newspaper what they need to know to produce that particular project in an afternoon, but they don't get fluent for a few weeks, and they'd mostly be lost, even after a semester, if asked to branch out to something new like a book.
You mention your books will get distibution in electronic format instead of or in addition to print, and that's an additional layer of complexity to learn (and you really need to understand the requirements and the limitations for producing electronic publications, in my opinion, before starting your project if you want everything to go smoothly). I think the question isn't so much how steep is the curve, but will you enjoy the climb, or do you just want to get to the top as quickly as possible. If you're not sure, download the trial (Ok, folks, I know one of you bookmarked where the CS5 trials are hidden for the next couple of weeks) and take it for a spin so you have a better idea waht you're in for before you shell out the big bucks.

  • Hippa Compliance for sites hosted by Business Catalyst?

My client's website needs to be Hippa Compliant. I want to build their site in Muse and have it hosted by Adobe Business Catalyst. Is that possible? Anything out of the ordinary I need to know? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you. Do you know if that will be an option in the future?

  • Tablet for a non-tech boss

What is the best tablet for a construction guy who is non-tech?  He wants it to show pictures to customers so doesn't need a lot of extras other than email and internet. One of his customers has an IPad and he likes that. I'm just not sure which tablet would be less aggravating for him. Where we live (rural) virtually no wi-fi. We do have AT&T as our wireless provider.
    Appreciate any advice!

I recommend the IPAD MINI. It is easy to carry, comes with a 5 megapixel camera and so much more.

  • How steep is the learning curve for FCP?

    Hi!
I have been using iMovie for years and want to learn how to drive FCP. Can anyone give me an idea for the 'steepness' of the learning curve?
FCP does seem a lot more complex than iMovie, at least at first glance.
    cheers,
    Hans-Martin Wagner

Don't forget anything... that's just silly. Editing is editing, regardless of what application you use. Some people think that knowing everything there is to know about a program will suddenly make them a good editor. It won't. Editing is an art. Your question, although totally prudent in your situation, is like asking someone what the learning curve is when moving from pencil drawing to painting. You don't have to forget how you hold and use a pencil to learn how to hold and use a paint brush.
The learning curve is entirely dependent on how well you learn new things. When you learn French, for instance, you don't forget how to speak English, do you? No, you translate. You find the similarities, and accommodate.
Here is my advice, for what it may be worth. If you say you know iMovie, and that it does everything you need, then make a nice long list of the things you do in iMovie. Be as detailed as you can be, in your workflow, and then pick up a manual and look up those things. You don't need to know everything that FCP is capable of. You only need to know the things you want to do with it. As you get going, you will inevitably discover the rest.
I have found that all computer applications are more or less the same. The more apps you use, the easier it is to learn others. The tools are in different locations, and may have different names, but they do the same things. Learn to translate. Don't start over, though...

  • Creating database for MUSE website using Business Catalyst.

We are building a membership site using Adobe MUSE. We are also using Business Catalyst to build the CRM customer database. We are using this as an alternative to MySQL since there is no direct connection between MySQL and MUSE. The only work around we know is to export the MUSE website to HTML. Import that HTML into Adobe DREAMWEAVER and the build the connections that way. This is time consuming and prone to errors as this does not create  a  flow in both system and data manipulation design.
We would like so home in creating, maintaining and performing searching on the database we create in Business Catalyst.

    Hi there,
As I mentioned, when a form is filled (Email is always required) then this the contact is added to the CRM.
You can not render the CRM on the front end as I think you will want. You would have to look to form web apps and display things that way.
Please note that Muse is a designer tool and has limited scope in terms of its functionality compared to building a full rich website, So you will reach certain walls with what your doing.

  • Max size for trial site on business catalyst?

Not sure if this belongs on Business Catalyst forum, but is there a maximum trial site size?  I see that the standard webBasics (which comes with Muse) has 100MB of space, can we go over that in the trial site and buy the extra space later?

    Hi,
There is no maximum trial size, you can build your site and then once you upgrade to a paid plan you'll be able to buy more overages.

  • Business Catalyst and FlexNav Question

HI everyone, I am doing a lot of responsive websites these days and I am constantly looking for good responsive navigation solutions. Recently I came across FlexNav, and tested it out, and it seems like a great solution to me.
I do wonder about its usability with the Business Catalyst dynamic menu system though. Am I able to add the required class, and data-breakpoint pieces into the <ul> tag? Example: <ul data-breakpoint="800" class="flexnav">
Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Try using the menu module version 2.

  • Is there any education available for the use of Firefox for a non techie?

I have used Firefox for several years now but I am not very tech-savvy. Many of the points in your promotions and releases don't mean much to me and I feel I may be missing out on some useful tools or features. Is there any education or manual guidance on Firefox and how to use it. How would you suggest that I address this?

    Hi philcoa,
You should check out the [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/features/ features page] for a quick rundown of all the Firefox has to offer. If there is anything on the features page that you are interested in learning more about, you should try searching for that feature in the [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/home Knowledge Base]. They have articles that cover pretty much every aspect of Firefox. Like this [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/getting-started-firefox Getting Started with Firefox] page.
I'll do some digging to see if there are any other articles that might help you.

  • The plugins update page is almost impossible for a non-techie to use

I'm a power user - I've got over 30 years of computer experience and have worked in education, devlepment circles for a lot of those.
When my Firefox updates page came up as having an out dated Adobe, i clicked on the link and got taken to the add-ons update page. all good so far, large buttons telling us to click here to update vulnerable add-ons - excellent UI design.
Clicked on links for silverlight, vlc, adobe flash, quicktime nad java.
all these links, except for the VLC one took me to a technical change log page where lots of looking and a lot of figuring out eventually got me to the correct page to DOWNLOAD the add-ons. apple, oddly enough for all their boasting on how good their UI and user experience skills are, was the very worst leading you in circles.
If we take security seriously the updates buttons should take users to the DOWNLOADs page as advertised, not a technical pag.e most users have enough trouble clicking one button, littleless two but to wade through tech talk - impossible.
The road taken for updates is effectively undoing the idea of encouraging security. We need to make it easier.
My suggestion - Updates buttons lead to the updates page and those pages should have a whopping great download button. for those of us technically minded a link to tech / changes pages but 95% of all usrers just down care. Hopefully no other adverts with download now will appear and if adobe finally get it through their thick skulls that McCrappy virus checkers are useless resource hogs then we would all be better off.
