Learning PT by using a big database?

I have been taught that in order to learn performance tuning, you have to work with big database, containing lots of data, in order to gain experience but you cannot gain knowledge of PT when you work with small database such as advecture works. Is it
true?

Hello,
I somewhat agree to this thought the bigger the database the more complex its operation becomes and o chances of error coming increases.And so your learning.Its not just with performance tuning its with all other aspects.A real time OLTP environment will
give you real time issues.For example index rebuild of 2 G DB is much simpler than 500 G DB.Same goes of reorganize ,update stats.

  • Use of Access database

    Hi,
    I want to write a application that uses an Access Database. Actually I want to write data to and read data from a Database with Labview. Does anyone knows a library to control a Access Database. Or any other solutions.
    Davy

    You've got several options. There is a shipping example that uses DDE to talk to an Access database. DDE sucks so you probably don't want to do that. There is ActiveX. There have been a lot of examples posted to the forum so you might want to do a search. ActiveX can be a real pain though. The nicest solution is to buy the Database Connectivity Toolkit from NI. It uses ADO/SQL to communicate to any database and hides a lot of complexity of learning SQL. There is also the free open source toolkit called LabSQL from Jeffrey Travis. This uses ADO/SQL to talk to any database. You'll need to learn SQL but that's not really that big a task.

    and I had to install node1 first and after node2 manually and perhaps for this the product was not well linked.
    I resolved the problem establishing the keys with the wizard and after copying the following files from node1 to node2
    /home/grid/.ssh -------> /home/grid/.ssh
    authorized_keys
    known_hosts
    This is the procedure if you run the wizard at the node1.
    The problem is that the wizard creates the keys incompletely...

  • Use of Flashback Database in Data guard environments

    11.2.0.3/RHEL 5.8
    I've come across several docs which talk about configuring FLASHBACK DATABASE in dataguard environments. We have several
    Physical standby DBs (Single Instance & RAC) running in our shop.I would like to know two or three major(common) use of FLASHBACK DATABASE in data guard environments.
    I understood one use mentioned in the below URL ie. recovering from a logical mistake
    http://uhesse.com/2010/08/06/using-flashback-in-a-data-guard-environment/
    I would like to know what are the other major/common use of Flashback Database feauture in DataGuard environment

    A couple of other uses:
    1) You can use flashback to test your DR. So you can activate your standby. Test application/network connectivity and functionality on your DR site and when done revert this database back to a physical standby. You do however have to ensure that this is allowed in your environment. In some places I have worked this would be a big no no as there were zero data loss requirements. However some companies will allow this as long as the standby is back in place within a certain time period.
    2) In the case that you have to do a failover for whatever reason, but then what was the primary site becomes available, you can flashback what was your primary to make it the standby rather than re-instatiating the database from scratch.
    Eg. You have a power outage at your primary site so you perform a failover and your standby becomes the primary. Once what was your primary site is back online, you can convert your previous primary into a standby by doing a full back/restore (or whatever method you choose) to recreate your standby again. However you also have the option of using flashback on this database and then convert it into a standby as this would potentially be quicker than re-instantiating the standby.

  • What are solutions for a way-too-big database?

    Hi guys!
    I'm a software developer and not very good in database designing. One day, I was asked something like this :
    "For example, there is a company with a web application. One day, the database for that application is way too big, caused performance issues and others, what is the solution for that application database?"
    At first, I thought that was about using multiple database with single app. But I don't know if I was right.
    I want to ask that what are the solutions? If it's "multiple database" then what should I do? Using two connection to 2 database simutaneously?
    I appreciate any replies. Thanks!

    Thanks Lubiez Jean-Val... for your links.
    I've got some more advices like :
    - "transferring workload to another database using different techniques to copy the data from original db"
    - "redesign of the database"
    So that means we use 2 different databases?Sometimes it is deemed desirable to keep only fairly recent data on the OLTP database, where the normal transaction activity happens, and replicate the data to another database that also contains historical data. This second database is used for heavy reporting tasks.
    And "redesign"?As in, design it from scratch and do it right this time. Make sure all data relations are properly defined to Third Normal Form; make sure all data is typed properly (use DATE columns for dates, NUMBER columns for numbers, etc); make sure you have designed effective indexing; make sure you use the capabilities of the rdbms and do NOT just use it as a data dump.
    See http://www.amazon.com/Effective-Oracle-Design-Osborne-ORACLE/dp/0072230657/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301257486&sr=1-3
    are they really good solutions?Like most everything else, "It depends"
    It depends on if the proposed solutions are implemented properly and address the root problem. The root problem (or even perceived problem) hasn't yet been defined. You've just assumed that at some undefined point the database becomes "way-too-big" and will cause some sort of problem.
    It's assumed that we don't have or can't use partitioning.
    And why is that assumed? Yes, you have to have a version of Oracle that supports it, and it is an extra cost license. But like everything else, you and your management have to do a hard-nosed cost/benefit analysis. You may think you can't afford the cost of implementing partitioning, but it may be that you can't afford the expenses derived from NOT implementing it. I don't know what the case is for you, but you and your management should consider the factors instead of just rejecting in out of hand.

  • What is the connection method should i use to connect database to visual basic?

    what i should learn to connect my database in SQL to visual basic?

    Hello Galeluo,
    >>i'm confusing about that, what is ADO.Net, Entity Framework, LINQ to Entities and LINQ to SQL
    There are documents for these concepts:
    ADO.Net:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/e80y5yhx%28v=vs.110%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    Entity Framework:

    LINQ to Entities:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/vstudio/bb386964(v=vs.100).aspx
    LINQ to SQL:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb386976(v=vs.110).aspx
    In above links, we can see that all are approaches which could be used to access database except the LINQ to Entities which is a query approach and is based on Entity Framework.
    >>what i should learn to connect my database in SQL to visual basic?
    If you are starting to use the .NET api to connect a database, I suggest you could use the ADO.NET api which is a underlying api, both Entity Framework and LINQ to SQL are based on this one.

  • Using a relational database

    i want to develop a dictionary midlet. i have to use a database, since there will be about 70000 entries. is there any free or open-source database i can use with CLDC-MIDP-1.0?
    how about if I use RMS? How will be the performance with so many entries; especially searching and sorting??

    Performance would suck big time with RMS (RMS is one of the slowest things in MIDP). And I don't know how many entries you'll be able to put in there (unless you're target device is a high end phone with a lot of RMS memory). I think you should use a remote database and connect via the network to look up words...

  • Dynamic JCombobox for a very big database resulset

    I want to use a JCombobox or similar for selecting values from a big database resultset. I'm using an editable one with SwingX autocomplete decorator. My strategy is:
    * show only first Xs regs.
    * let the user to enter some text in the combobox and refine the search reloading the model.
    Someone have some sample code or know some components that do that.
    Or can point me to some implementation details?
    A lot of thanks in advance,
    PD:
    I need something efficient that don't query database to much.

    what is the size of the table and how many lines are you going to delete?
    I would recommend you to delete only up to 5000 or 10000 records in one step.
    do 100 times.
    select *
              from
              into table itab.
              where
              up to 10.000 records.
    if ( itab is initial )
      exit.
    endif.
    delete ... from table itab.
    commit work.
    If this is still too slow, than you should create a secondary index with zone.
    You can drop the index after the deletion is finished.

  • Just installed 10g Exp, can I use the "Bank" database from MySQL?

    So I installed MySQL, PHP, and Apache, separately. I was using a "Learning SQL 2005" book that instructed me to create a play "bank" database, and run the code to create/populate tables. I used the bank database for a while to learn and it was great.
    Now I installed Oracle Database 10g Express Edition and I uninstalled MySQL, PHP, and Apache. Is it possible to use this bank database that I was using with MySQL?
    When I go to the Database Home Page and go into the SQL Commands section and type "use bank;", it says "ORA-00900: invalid SQL statement".
    When I type "create database bank;", it says "ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed ORA-01100: database already mounted".
    Also, since the SQL statements that I used to create the database in MySQL is just ANSI SQL, I can use these same statements to create a database in Oracle, right?
    Thanks for your help!

    Unfortunately every RDBMs ANSI SQL isn't quite ANSI SQL. You'll find datatypes in mysql that have no direct equivelant, and quite a few items that just won't work in oracle (or ms sqlserver, or ... the list goes on)
    Like the "create database" statement, to the oracle engine its an entirely different operation. There is no need to create a database, that's taken care of with the install. And the "use <database>" command doesn't have an oracle equivalent.
    Start by creating a database user with resource and connection privileges, and try the mysql create table statements. It'll take some work- changing up the DDLs to work will take a bit of trial and error but its one way to learn.
    $ sqlplus /nolog
    SQL> connect system
    ... Password ...
    ... Connected ...
    SQL> create user <username> identified by <password>;
    SQL> grant resource, create session to <username>;
    SQL> connect <username>
    ... password ...
    SQL> create table ...

  • The options to replicate a secondary read-only copy of a big database with limited network connection?

    There is a big database on remote server. A read-only replicate is required on a local server. The data can only be transferred via FTP, etc. It's ok to replicate it once a day.
    Logshipping is an option. However, it need to kill all the connections when doing restoring. What's the other options (pros/cons)? How about merge repl or .Net sync framework?

    Hi
    ydbn,
    Do you need to update data on the local server and propagate those changes to remote server? If no, you can use log shipping or transaction replication achieve your requirement.  It doesn’t need to kill all the connections if you
    clear the Disconnect users in the database when restoring backups check box when configuring log shipping,
    With transaction replication, the benefits are as follows.
    Synchronization. This method can be used to keep multiple subscribers synchronized in real time.
    Scale out. Transactional replication is excellent for scenarios in which read-only data can be scaled
    out for reporting purposes or to enable e-commerce scalability (such as providing multiple copies of product catalogs).
    There are a few disadvantages of utilizing transaction replication, including:
        • Schema changes/failover. Transactional subscribers require several schema changes that impact foreign keys and impose other constraints.
        • Performance. Large-scale operations or changes at the publisher might require a long time to reach subscribers.
    However, if you need to update data on the local server and propagate those changes to remote server, merge replication
     is more appropriate, and it comes with the following advantages:
        • Multi-master architecture. Merge replication does allow multiple master databases. These databases can manage their own copies of data and marshal those changes as needed between other members of
    a replication topology.
        • Disconnected architecture. Merge replication is natively built to endure periods of no connectivity, meaning that it can send and receive changes after communication is restored.
        • Availability. With effort on the part of the developers, merge-replicated databases can be used to achieve excellent scale-out and redundancy options.
    Merge replication comes with some disadvantages, including:
        • Schema changes. Merge replication requires the existence of a specialized GUID column per replicated table.
        • Complexity. Merge replication needs to address the possibility for conflicts and manage operations between multiple subscribers, which makes it harder to manage. For more details, please review this
    article.
    For the option of sync framework, I would like to recommend you post the question in the Sync Framework forums at
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?category=sync . It is appropriate and more experts will assist you. Also you can check this

  • What Classes do you use for developing Database Applications

    Hi ! (sorry for my bad english)
    I develop now an application for production planning and I use an informix database-server. I have no problems with the database an the connection. I,m a database expert, but I,m a newcommer in java. What classes do you use to develop a database application ? (specially Table Handling) I tried it with JTable and AbstractTableModel. Are there better possibilities ?
    JdbTable OR
    JTable with DBTableModel OR
    JTable with DBTableModel and DataSet
    I know that this is a big question, but some little Informations can help me. (I develop with JBuilder Proffessional)
    Thank you for your help.
    Wolfgang

    No - the classes you have described (AbstractTableModel etc) are Swing classes - that is, they are Models in the MVC GUI architecture. Database-related stuff (SQL at any rate) is contained in the packages java.sql and javax.sql - The latter is part of the Enterprise addition. You would also need to purchase a database driver (or use the sun one, which is something like com.sun.odbc.jdbc.Driver or whatever). The driver supplies you with connections to the database (java.sql.Connection).
    Alternatively, you may be deploying code in a J2EE AppServer (eg. WebLogic, WebSphere etc) in which case you can use the JNDI to get a javax.sql.DataSource object (by setting one up in the AppServer and doing a lookup on it) and use this to get database Connections.
      Class c = Class.forName("com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver");
      SybDriver sybDriver = (SybDriver) c.newInstance();
      java.sql.DriverManager.registerDriver((Driver) sybDriver);
      //then use Driver object to get hold of a Connection
      //or alternatively using DataSources
      InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext();
      DataSource ds = (DataSource) ctx.lookup("jdbc/MyDriver");
      Connection conn = null;
      try{
        Connection conn = ds.getConnection("login", "password");
        Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
        ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("select * from MY_TABLE");
        while (rs.next()) {
          //columns are enumerated 1...n
          String s = rs.getString(1);
          //or can get by Col Name
          String str = rs.getString("name_col");
      } finally {
        conn.close();
      }Anyway, I hope this helps - you'll probably need to get a book on it (Java Enterprise by O'Reilly is a good one)

  • I am using the big date calendar template and when I submit it to apple for printing I lose the name of two months. These names are not text boxes. I see the names when I send it in but something happens during the transmission to apple. It was suggested

    I am using the big date calendar template in iPhoto. I am on Lion 10.7.2, macbook air. The names of the months are on each calendar page but something happens when I send the data to Apple. The names are part of the template. They are not text boxes. I lose two names on the calendar after it is sent to Apple. Apple suggested I make a pdf file of my calendar before sending it in and check to make sure every name shows. I did this with a calendar I just sent in. The calendar was correct. All names of the months were showing. After sending the data two month names disappeard because when it arrived by mail, it was incorrect. Apple looked at my calendar via a pdf file and it was incorrect.  This is second time this has happened. I called Apple and they had me delete several folders in the Library folder, some preferences and do a complete reinstall of iPhoto.  I have not yet remade the defective calendar. I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem?
    kathy

    Control-click on the background of the view all pages window and select "Preview Calendar" from the contextual menu.
    You can also save the pdf as a file to compare to the printed calendar.  If the two names are visible in the pdf file then the printed copy should show them.  Contact Apple for a refund.  Apple Print Products - Apple Store (U.S.)

  • "Connection is closed" closed error while using MS Access database

    We are using MS Access database in our project. Recently the database was upgraded to 2000.
    After upgrading the database, I get the folowing error when getAutoCommit() is called on a connection -
    java.sql.SQLException: Connection is closed
         at sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcConnection.validateConnection(Unknown Source)
         at sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcConnection.getAutoCommit(Unknown Source)
    The connection is not closed explicity before getAutoCommit() is called, only the statement is closed.
    This error is sporadic and occurs under load scenario only (when a lot of connections are open). Once the error occurs, all the database calls fail then onwards. The error was not occuring before the database was upgraded.
    I suspect the jbdc-odbc driver. The driver might not be compatible with Access2000 database. Under load scenario, it might be closing connections automatically.
    Has anybody faced similar problem before? Where can I find the compatible jdbc-odbc driver? And how to ensure that it is jdbc-odbc driver problem only?
    The database verison - MS Access 2000
    Java version - 1.3.1_01

    can i just point out that there is no support for transactions in Access so I wonder why you are calling autoCommit methods at all...
