Left outer join VS Is NULL .. Please help me to understand this.

I have a requirement to use Leftouter join on a column. But unfortunately i couldnt implement this in OBIEE. so instead iam using = and is NULL condition. kindly help me to understand this or give me a solution.

Left Outer Join & IS NULL Not Working
In a Data Flow Query element I am using a Left Outer Join to correlate two tables. In order to eliminate rows in which the Left Outer Join found a match with the Right table I am using IS NULL in the Where clause. Unfortunately IS NULL doesn't seem to return true when the NULL is caused by a lack of a match on a Left Outer Join. Has anybody been able to work around this?
Use not is NULL in next query after the join.

In our project we are converting the Unix shell & SQL scripts into OWB mappings. We are facing problem converting left outer join in OWB. here is one of the example. i have just pasted the FROM and where condition.

We converts the same when we are putting it in OWB join Operator
INGRP1.branch_no = INGRP2.branch_no(+)
AND INGRP1.item_no = INGRP2.item_no(+)
AND INGRP3.to_date between t2.tran_dt and t2.to_dt
AND INGRP2.to_dt >= INGRP2.start_images
But as you see in the OWB opreator we can put left join with INGRP1 with INGRP2.
We can not make same join with INGRP3 & INGRP4 , becoz it failed saying "you cannot left outer join on more than one table/source".
so overall this OWB code makes incomplete left outer join as per the above ANSI SQL join in Oracle.
Bcoz of the problem we are getting less number of rows...........

I know this topic is here for a while now, but I had the same problem today, searched for help and didn´t find anything.
Later I figured out how to do this.
You just have to put the (+) one time, and the OWB converts in an LEFT OUTER JOIN statement.
For this case, all you have to do is:
( INGRP1.branch_no = INGRP2.branch_no(+) AND INGRP1.item_no = INGRP2.item_no AND INGRP2.to_dt >= INGRP2.start_images )

Left outer join with multiple conditions
Is it possible to add to a left outer join (= anyOfAllowingNone) more than the primary condition (in SQL this would be added per "and").
Background: The execution plan of the produced SQL shows large results on which the final filter is applied although I have conditions that would decrease this last result set much earlier...There is no easy way to do this in TopLink expressions, other than including the join in the regular where clause as you have done. Does it make a big impact in the performance of your query?

If you want to outer join to a table, you have to include a ( + ) on each of its columns in the where clause (or cope with them possibly being null). Personally, I find ANSI syntax easier to work with when dealing with outer joins:

I am referring 2 regular tables from the HR schema which you get when you install Oracle 9i , Now the issue is that I want all the rows from my employees table even if the row doesnt have the salary equal to 2500.

Why do you want to use "oracle only syntax ( + )"? I highly recommend you to use ANSI syntax, it's much more readable:
This is from Oracle's documents:
Oracle recommends that you use the FROM clause OUTER JOIN syntax rather than the Oracle join operator. Outer join queries that use the Oracle join operator (+) are subject to the following > rules and restrictions, which do not apply to the FROM clause OUTER JOIN syntax:
You cannot specify the (+) operator in a query block that also contains FROM clause join syntax.
The (+) operator can appear only in the WHERE clause or, in the context of left-correlation (that is, when specifying the TABLE clause) in the FROM clause, and can be applied only to a column > of a table or view.
If A and B are joined by multiple join conditions, then you must use the (+) operator in all of these conditions. If you do not, then Oracle Database will return only the rows resulting from a > simple join, but without a warning or error to advise you that you do not have the results of an outer join.
The (+) operator does not produce an outer join if you specify one table in the outer query and the other table in an inner query.
You cannot use the (+) operator to outer-join a table to itself, although self joins are valid. For example, the following statement is not valid:

Using Command to fix null / left outer join issue

I was told awhile ago that it's possible to fix crystal's issue with left outer join and null records being eliminated.
I think i remember most of how this goes, but i can't seem to duplicate it.
1) You can't have any select expert -- record
2) You create the report normally and then make a new report using the SQL Query
- Can't remember if its the whole report or upto the tables that have hisotry (null results)
3) You move parts from WHERE to FROM
Hopefully someone can help correct the steps i'm doing wrong or add what i'm missing from this.

Take a look at what I've done with the last line of the last join. The issue is that when you left join to a table and you use that table in the Where clause, you've basically turned your you left outer join into an inner join because the record has to be there in order to get the value in the filter. By moving the filter into the join, you'll still get the rest of the data when there is no corresponding record.
NOTE: Crystal adds all sorts of "extra" stuff like quotes and parentheses that you don't need and which I have removed to make the query easier to read.

because the cost of the 1st query is very high and i change the sql like 2nd, the cost reduced a lot.

Yuvaraaj.Each JOIN clause must contain an ON condition (except for CROSS JOIN but let's not go there) so your example isn't syntactically valid and I'm not sure what you are comparing to what. I would probably write it as:
select *
from from hrm2_requests req

left join hrm2_swap_complaint_detail comp_dtl
on comp_dtl.complaint_detail_code = hrm_comp.complaint_detail_code

SQL Select using LEFT OUTER JOIN returning field values when I expect NULL
I am having problems with this select statement:
SELECT distinct pl.id, th.trip, pc.country, pph.location
FROM people_list pl, people_travelhistory th, people_country pc
LEFT OUTER JOIN people_info pph on pph.id=pl.id and pph.country=pc.country
where people_list.active='Y' and people_list.id=th.id and th.trip = pc.trip;
The criteria is that the pph table may not have no record for that id and country.
The problem is that the pph.location field is returned with data even when no matching record for that id or country exists.
If the record doesn't exist in the pph table, I want pph.location = NULL
What am I doing wrong?

I am still in the process of learning SQL, and I am having trouble specifically with the the left outer join. I normally join tables using equijoin's, but I am not getting the right data set returns, and thought the using a left or right outer join would resolve the problem...
Here is my SQL that is working properly with 1 left outer join. I am building the query slowly so in the next SQL you will see where I am seeing the error. I don't expect you to understand the data and columns I am trying to join, I believe the problems I am experiencing are related to syntax, and I am hoping you can find where my syntax errors are.

The first example you gave is an ANSI style join. It has the JOIN keyword, not a comma, between tables.

I Want to do a query that retrieve for one Artist all Works availables on database and,if present,the City where each work was realized.

You should use either the old Oracle style of joins, like in the VM's query, or, better, the ANSI join style, recommended by Oracle (not a mix of them, like in your query):
