Legacy 4.5 links

We will be migrating to 6.1 from 4.5 in a few months. One of the great unknowns is what to do with all of the 4.5 links contained in content throughout the enterprise. It really is unfeasible to trrack down all of these links and change them.
Should we create a "redirection" strategy for these? What are some best practices you have found in this situation? Should something catch the http 404s and redirect to a new, calculated URL?
I appreciate any of the suggestions and ideas.

Are you guys on 4.5 for COM/ASP or 4.5WS for Solaris? I'm assuming the former and if that's the case, you may be able to employ a strategy to catch the old community links and "translate" them to new community links.

In it, I talk about using friendly URLs on a corporate web site, but in theory you could use the same approach (or a very similar one) to accomplish old community to new community mapping. In other words, somebody enters an URL that ends in Community.asp and that actually takes you to Redirect.aspx, which rewrites the link and then redirects. (I think a good best practice would be to show an intermediate page that tells people to update the referring page with the new URL.)

See details on buggy DW image link behavior, below. My question is:
1) how to make site root-relative links work in DW and Server both? Or…
2) how to reliably automate the change of several hundred legacy root-relative links of the form
/images/image.jpg to document-relative?
That is, to
../images/image.jpg or
../../images/image.jpg or
../../../images/image.jpg etc…depending on where the directory is.
The old format (/images/image.jpg ) used to work fine in my previous DW 8 configuration but appear grey in DW after “upgrading” to DW cs5.5 mac. (they look fine on the server, but it’s hard to edit image-heavy pages locally when they are all grey).
I tried changing the files to how DW creates root relative links now:
/public_html/images/image.jpg, which is a very easy, attractive root flow since there’s a one-to-one mapping. These look great in DW but are broken on the server!
I looked at the “advanced” site setup, and it looked like it might be possible to nuke the /public_html/ part of my server info…but it also looked like there was the potential for doing damage changing these settings, which are automatically generated from our server connection settings, which seem to work.
The “links relative to document/ site root” toggle…does that change how DW interprets existing links, or just change the default when you are adding a link? I have made 80% of the file links document relative…before wondering if root-relative isn’t better?
It sure seems less ambiguous for all those images if theres a way to make root relative work for DW design view, DW link check, and server.

Thanks for jumping on this.
All clear and understood about where publc_html is etc.
No contemplation of nuking the actual public_html directory on the server, just the "/public_html" text string at the start of the DW-generated links.
"/public_html" is automatically added to the front of the link in DW if I create the link with any of the GUI tools, if I have "site root relative" selected. And ""/public_html" ends up in the code, and gets uploaded that way to the server, where it (obviously) doesn't work.
Doesn't sound like it is supposed to work this way. Also, what seems to be the usual root relative format (/images/image.jpg) shows as a broken link in the GUI and an external link in the DW link check. All this togther makes me thinkI have some obscure setting incorrect?
The setting that caught my eye is manage sites/ site setup/ advance settings/ local info/ web url, which is automatically set to http://www.oasisdesign.net/public_html/
it gives an option to change it but it makes every effort to make this NOT look like something users should mess with:
Having gone through the more careful thought process during this post, I'm ready to do the experiment of changing the remote server web URL (why is it wrong by default?)...think I'll eat dinner first so there's 45 min to avert disaster if anyone knows this to be a bad idea!

1099's for external vendors

We have a set of external vendors that are NOT set up in SAP. Is there a way to create a 1099 form for these vendors using S_P00_07000134, but without setting them up as a vendor in SAP? Is there a user exit (or something) that could capture this non-SAP vendor information before it is sent to the smartform?

I also had the same requirement like few tax amount for a particular vendor is present in SAP and the remaining entries are present in the legacy system and we are asked to combine both the tax amounts from the SAP and the legacy syatem and disply in the 1099 form and i solved it. I am giving you the steps i took to solve it.
1). Each SAP vendor (LIFNR) is linked with a legacy vendor(ALTKN) in table LFB1. Check for which SAP vendor your legacy vendor is linked.
2). Create a custom table which has the key fields as SAP_LIFNR, LEG_LIFNR, WITHT and two other fields WT_WITHCD and the amount field.
3). Now copy the Smartform which is used to the "Z" smartform. Inside which you can add the logic to display the legacy vendor details along with the Standard SAP vendor details.
and also change the configuration of the smartform to the transaction using spro as shown in the screen shot.

Getting Event 4907 on %AllUsersProfile% folders

We've got policy established that is supposed to audit failed attempts to access files in the All Users Profile directory, specifically for Symantec applications (Endpoint Protection, BackupExec).
We used Group Policy File Security to define audit policy on %AllUsersProfile%\Symantec\ on both Windows XP / 2003 systems and Windows 2008 / Windows 7 systems. For some reason, on the 2008/7 systems, we're getting repeated messages of 4907 "Auditing
settings on object were changed"
I've heard that this could be something to do with the way Windows 2008/7 user a symbolic link for the legacy references for areas such as All Users Profile. Something like the policy attempts to set the audit settings on the sym link, end up propagating
to the actual folders, but then detect them missing on the sym link and attempt to reapply. What I'm not sure of is how to fix this in my policy short of defining an absolute path to the version 5 kernel and version 6 kernel separately.
Am I ballpark here as to why the event 4907 is being generated? The low count on this is 264 per object in one week. The high end is 1298 occurrences in the same timeframe.

I know what typically causes a 4907 event, but I think in this case it'd being done by Group Policy. I have policy set under the Computer Policy > Security Settings > File System area that I use to enable auditing and specific ACLs on files and
folders throughout my OS.
On of the folders in the target list is %AllUsersProfile%\Symantec.
I'm not haveing any problems on my Windows XP / Windows 2003 systems using the same policy, but I am only getting the excessive 4907 messages on Windows 7 and Windows 2008R2 servers and only from the C:\ProgramData\Symantec\ paths (all folders and files
under this path).
The documentation says that in Windows XP, the %AllUsersProfile% resolves to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users Profile\, but in Windows Vista and newer, it is supposed to resolve to C:\ProgramData\. That being said, I also know that Windows Vista
has symbolic links in place that, amoung other things, redirects legacy software from the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users Profile\ path to the C:\ProgramData\ path.
I'm wondering if in fact for Windows 7, the %AllUsersProfile% actually points to the legacy path / symbolic link? This might cause GPO to attempt to set the ACLs and audit info via the symbolic link, then later find the sym link itself to be missing
the settings and trigger the GPO to attempt to apply the settings over and over.
Today, as you suggested, I'll check again the user name associated with the change, however I think it was logged as being Local Service or something of the like. I do not think this is an individual attempting to make these changes by hand.

Startup takes forever...

I just installed Leopard and transferred my data from Tiger. Just as with Tiger, Leopard is taking 2 min to fully start up. I deleted my PRAM and NDRAM and still nothing. Somebody told me to once again do a erase and install this time not doing the transfer, but at this point I have spent forever getting the computer customized and already added in many more applications. Is there anyway that I can find out if I have something attached to my user profile or something that is making it take so long? Right now it is 40 sec of a black screen, 50 sec of the grey screen with the apple logo, then after I enter in my password for my username another 30 seconds. Please help.

Also, if it was a hardware issue, what would you think it may be and how would I find out? I am not thinking its the hard drive because it has a delayed response on both the tiger hard drive and leopard hard drive. Could it be the optical drive? It has been making a few sounds randomly every once and awhile.
Not the optical drive unless you are using it. Those few sounds you hear probably indicate a bad HD.
Run DU and repair the drive.

IMPORT OF INSTALLATION DETAILS USING API

We have got orders in the existing 11.5.10 system now we want to import the systems from our legacy system and link them to the orders. I know we can create the systems using CSI_SYSTEM_PUB but how do we link them to order lines so that they are visable in order line installation details. Is there a api to do this? Please help.

There is no public API but a group API is available. Assuming that you have already created transaction lines (using CSI_T_TXN_DETAILS_GRP) you can use CSI_T_TXN_SYSTEMS_GRP to assign systems. So first you create transaction lines and then systems.

Playing PPC-based game on Intel

i thought rosetta would take care of this on it's own.
i'm trying to play the game Doom II on my macbook, but it won't work. the CD shows up on the desktop, but when i click on either the 'play game from CD' or 'installer' it says that 'You cannot open the application "DOOM II" because it is not supported on this system."
now, this game worked just fine on my powerbook pismo G3 that had OSX 10.1.3, so i have no idea why Rosetta isn't taking over and allowing it to boot.
when i 'get info' on the CD or installer, it doen't give me any kind of option as to how it should be opened.....
any help would be great,

If in you in fact mean Doom II, and not Doom III, then it won't run on the system because Doom 2 is classic game, meaning it requires OS 9 to run. This is not supported on any of the intel macs. A quick search revealed that there is a program called Doom Legacy that supposedly will allow you to play Doom and Doom II in OS X, although since it was someone's pet project, the stability of it can't be guarenteed. You can find Doom Legacy at the link below and try it out if you want, but I've never used it, so I know nothing about it.

Blackberry Support Pages

I'm having issues with the Blackberry Support pages. When I click on a lot of them, nothing happens.
I've clicked on the video demo's, nothing. Other pages as well.
I'm new to Blackberry. I've downloaded the Blackberry Desktop Software. When I hooked my device up to my laptop to access the desktop software, I get message telling me my device, Z10, is not supported by the desktop software. WTF? I thought the Blackberry Desktop Software supported "ALL" Blackberry devices.
When I tried to open the "Manua/User Guide" link. It did not open.
Just tell me where I can go to ask questions and get answers.

Link not recognizing legacy backup files

I'm trying to restore some of my 9900 data into my new Q10 but link will not recognize the 9900 backups.
I've tried this originally on my Mac to no avail. So I transfered over the 9900 backups to a PC and the Windows Blackberry Link won't recognize it either.
Any suggestions? My 9900 is bricked, so I can't access it.

You are totally correct. The first versions of BlackBerry Link did not have this option.
Now this is a known issue for BlackBerry Link for Mac, however it should work for the PC. Do you have any backup files that were originally created on the PC instead of brought over from the Mac?

Linker Error during compiling ODBC WinCE C++_Sample Project

I am devloping a ODBC application for PocketPC2003 using OLite 10g Release 10.3.0.2. before that i am understanding the sample application provided with Olite.
I followed all the instructions provided in ReadMe.txt file available before using VC++ sample. After making all the settings and compiling i am getting following linker errors as mentioned below.

We are currently working on wrappering the APIs for UniVerse (aka Pick on
UNIX).
We received some help from the guys at RTD in Denver.
We tested out a C program that uses the Universe APIs and it works fine.
We will be building the Forte piece and compiling it this week.
Our first application is to inquire the UniVerse data, after that is
successful, we will move to inserting & updating.

This is a bit of a long shot, but has anyone experience with integrating
Forte with PI/Open. PI/Open is a variant of PICK. We have a requirement
to read and update a PI/Open database from within our Forte application,
and we would be most interested to hear from anyone who has experience in
doing this.
We are aware of a set of APIs provided with PI/Open that are written in
"C". We could wrapper these from within Forte, however the issue is that
the APIs provided are non-shared, and Forte requires shared libraries.

** Java.lang.RuntimeException can't connect to service object with
the ior file name **.
My question is on every client is it necessary for ORB(Visigenic for
Java 3.2) and also the Forti Java interoperability package that is
provided by the Forti for compatability with Java or it is not
required on the clients ?
Is there any other alternative to achieve the goal as this will give
wide access to the Forti service objects through Web Browser clients.

very urgent.

compiled the Java files that are generated by Forti along with the
client Java file.The Java applet is getting downloaded on the client
browser(IE 4.0), but the problem is browser is giving an exception
** Java.lang.RuntimeException can't connect to service object with
the ior file name **.
My question is on every client is it necessary for ORB(Visigenic for
Java 3.2) and also the Forti Java interoperability package that is
provided by the Forti for compatability with Java or it is not
required on the clients ?
Is there any other alternative to achieve the goal as this will give
wide access to the Forti service objects through Web Browser clients.
Please mail me the solution to this problem as early as possible it is
very urgent.

Forte with PI/Open. PI/Open is a variant of PICK. We have arequirement
to read and update a PI/Open database from within our Forte application,
and we would be most interested to hear from anyone who has experiencein

We are aware of a set of APIs provided with PI/Open that are written in
"C". We could wrapper these from within Forte, however the issue isthat
the APIs provided are non-shared, and Forte requires shared libraries.Would be interersting, which operating system you're using.
You could write a dll (on windows) or shared library (on unix) wrappering
the
original,statically linked "C"-Libs. This lib could be used by Forte.

Hi,
We seem to be having some type of deadlock problem when trying to
close
forms and am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem.
The
phenomenon does not always occur and is not specific to any one client
machine.
I will explain the phenomenon:
1. We have an object that contains our main application startup
method.
This method then instantiates our main application window (Control)
and
invokes the Display() method using start task.
2. All other forms created by the application are created using a form
manager service object which exists on the client partition. The form
manager has a CreateForm() method which instantiates a form class of
the
specified type and invoked the form's Display() method using start
task.
3. Each form has a Close push button which when clicked invokes
Window.RequestFinalize().
Now, the problem we have is this:
The user starts the application and the main application window is
displayed. The user then selects an option from the main window and a
child form is created using the form manager service object and is
displayed. The user can continue to create more child forms by
selecting
options from the main window and all child forms are instantiated and
displayed correctly.
However, when the user attempts to close one of the forms the form
does
not close. The finalize event is triggered and the event loop is
exited,
but the form continues to be displayed and does not close. If the user
then moves the mouse pointer over the main application window, the
child
form immediately closes. Moving the mouse cursor over other child
windows (or even the desktop) does NOT do this - only when the mouse
cursor is moved over the main window does the child form close.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?

No, self.Close() should close the window. This is the
method I referred to. You could place a traceline
behind self.Close() to see if it is executed. It is not
inconcievable some exception may exit the Display()
method before self.Close() is executed.
After that, maybe, some events from your main
window trigger something that causes a call like 'My-
Window.Close()', where 'MyWindow' is a subclass of
'UserWindow', so 'MyWindow' gets closed after all.
Maybe you've overridden 'Close()', so now it doesn't
work properly anymore.
Are you sure you exit the event loop after you press
the close button?? The display method is not regis-
terred for any <PushButton>.Click event, though maybe
you just didn't include the full Display method in your
mail.
Remember that an event loop will only respond to an
event if it is not currently handling an event. So, the
method behind <PushButton>.Click may call a self.
Window.RequestFinalize(), which will cause an After-
Finalize event to be posted, which will be placed in
the event queue. If this method however keeps waiting
for something, the event loop will not respond to the
AfterFinalize event, until this method is done waiting.
