Legal implications of redistributing tools.jar with JRE 6

We're an ISV and want to enable our customers to write their own plugins. Since usability is key, we want to automate compilation and deployment with a simple click in the UI. For this purpose, we use tools.jar.
We ship the JRE with our product but even after extensive research, I'm not 100% sure about the legal implications of redistributing tools.jar along with it.
Quoting the readme:
Redistributable JDKTM Files:
The limited set of files and directories from the JDK listed below may
be included in vendor redistributions of the JavaTM Runtime Environment (JRETM).
They cannot be redistributed separately, and must accompany an identically
versioned JRE distribution. All paths are relative to the top-level directory of the JDK
lib/tools.jar [All platforms]Quoting [http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=17&threadID=614476|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=17&threadID=614476]
jwenting says: Normally, you can distribute the JRE which contains tools.jar.Quoting [http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=17&threadID=438623|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=17&threadID=438623]
shankar.unni says: So you can take the tools.jar from a JDK and stick it into a JRE, and distribute that.I've followed the discussion about Tomcat and afaik, they still don't include tools.jar. JBoss, for instance, can optionally be downloaded with the JDK.
To me, it appears to be possible. Can anyone shed light on this topic?

Florian

  • Can I redistribute tools.jar?

    My company has developed an application in which we generate a .java source code file, use the com.sun.tools.javac.Main class to compile it, dynamically load the compiled .class file, and then used the loaded object to do interesting things.
    So for our application to work, we need to distribute a compiler along with it. I'd like to just use the com.sun.tools.javac.Main class for this, but it's not a standard part of the JRE. It's contained in the <jdk dir>/lib/tools.jar file. I can't find anything in the JDK license about redistributing this tools.jar file.
    Does anyone know if it's OK to redistribute the tools.jar file with your own application? Or is there another compiler that's better to redistribute with your own application?

    Normally, you can distribute the JRE which contains tools.jar.
    You can also ask Sun for permission to include the file in your product, permission which may or may not be given.
    Given that your application is a direct competitor to the JDK itself there may be problems though as Sun does not generally permit competitors to leech off their work as I'm sure you can understand.

  • How to run JavaFX Jar with JRE 7 on MAC OS Lion 10.7.5 ?

    I had java 1.6 installed on my MAC OSX Lion 10.7.5. When I am trying to run that JavaFX application jar
    java -jar application.jar
    It always shows a dialog "The application require a newer version of Java Run-time" with download link. Even I have downloaded and successfully installed it on my MAC machine but it still shows me the same window.
    It installed jre-7u10-macosx-x64.dmg but java -version is always point to 1.6.
    Then I searched for Java Preferences to point the current JRE 1.7 but I could find Java Preferences at Applications -> Utilities -> Java -> Java Preferences.
    I found an Java Icon on System Preference. When I am trying to open that widow it's showing me error -- the java control panel opens in a separate window and nothing happens when we click on Re-open the Java Control Panel.

    To find a copy of LP7 you would need to look for a copy on eBay.. However, the protection method used with LP7 no longer functions so you cannot register it and therefore you cannot use it. unless you have already registered LP7 yourself in the past using the security key dongle provided
    Any version of LP7 from a torrent would be an illegal (and most likely non working) version due to the protection that was used at that time... and so posting about it here, was not be wise.
    So.. thats why my previous answer was so brief... Simply put, you cannot use LP7 unless you already have a validated and registered security dongle... even if you found a copy of LP7 somewhere
    The only practical solution is to find some kind soul who already has a working version of LP7 installed, that you can send the projects to... for them to do the conversion for you.
    I would, but I no longer have LP7 installed here on any of my testbed Macs...

    Hello,
    Indeed those JAR files are compiled with JDK 1.3. However, the AS Java systems are running 1.4.x, hence, there is no problem to use those JARs with the JRE 1.4. That's why I do not believe your issue is related to the JRE version. In addition, those JAR files do not have 1.4 compiled version.
    Kind regards,

  • Licensing issues with altered tools.jar

    Hello,
    I wanted to know, if it would be permitted if I would ship an edited tools.jar with my application.
    I would not charge my customer for the original Java-source code, I would also include the license-files that come along with the tools.jar and I would even make the affected code available publicly. Would that be enough or is it simply prohibited?

    Hi,
    Note that your version of Ubuntu is beta and we don't support beta software. This means that even if the problem exists and is reproducible we would wait for the open source team to release a production version.

  • Redistributing app with JRE on usb

    Hi all,
    I've a legal question about redistributing Sun JRE
    We've created, some days, ago a portable PGP java application (details on http://ppgp.sourceforge.net)
    Now...the will is to make an "USB version" of the application... such usb version would contain:
    -Application jar and libraries
    -A copy of both windows and linux jre (1.6) that are used as private jvm in order to execute the application.
    Now, technically all works perfectly (runs on both windows and linux)... but i am not sure if, according to sun policies, this can be done.
    So the question is: can I release a zip for an opensource project that contains the jre and redistribute it?
    Furthermore: what if the unrestricted jce policy files are embedded in the private jre?
    Thanks,
    Primiano Tucci

    I mix the jre since 2 different jres would waste too much space for an usb key.
    About new versions, I don't care about them. Since they're are for private use by my application only, if it works now, it's just fine.. i will not need any upgrade.
    Finally I don't care about Solaris. Portable PGP is intented to provide a way to use pgp encryption on others computer (e.g. when traveling) just plugging an usb key, and I think that in those cases, it would be really unprobable to find, for example, a solaris workstation in an internet caf.
    Standalone jars will be available for other os.
    Thanks,
    Primiano Tucci

  • Jar files download problems in Java Webstart with JRE 1.6

    We have encountered a few problems in Java Webstart with JRE 1.6
    In JRE 1.5, the jar files are getting downloaded onto the client
    machine with it's original names.
    Example :
    Server File Name : acm.jar
    Client File Name : RMacm.jar
    But in JRE 1.6, the jar files are getting downloaded with improper file names.
    Example :
    Server File Name : acm.jar
    Client File Name : 4fb074cc-66fc7407
    Moreover the path itself seems to be invalid.
    Example Path :
    JRE 1.5 path:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
    Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javaws\https\D17.16.23.11\P443\DMtest\DMwebStart
    JRE 1.6 path:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
    Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\12
    Due to this, we are facing Classpath problems.
    What changes do we have to make to the code, for Java
    Webstart to work ?
    We are using JBoss 4.0.4 and JDK 1.5 in the Server
    On the client machine, we have IE 6 and JRE 1.6.01
    Help would be appreciated.

  • Tools.jar did not install with 1.4

    My old machine, with the 1.3 SDK, had tools.jar. Unfortunately, that machine crashed and burned. I downloaded 1.4 onto my new computer, but there is no tools.jar (I use Jedit and it needs it for its compiler plug in). Did I neglect to download something else? I should also note that there is no /lib dir off of my /bin dir. I'm running XP Home. Thanks.

    Do tell us more about what kind of exceptions that are thrown.
    I also have a problem with applets running fine with java plug-in 1.3, but 1.4.x does not work very well.
    The problem I seem to have is that the jar isn't cached because there is no expiration date or last modified date.
    There is a reported bug about cashing with Java plug-in 1.4. I'm afraid that I can't find it right now though...

    Do I need to download the whole JAVA 1.7 on MAC to run the JAR? No
    Can not I run the Jar file with Jre7?Yes, you can.
    This may be because I have downloaded the JRE 1.7Yep, that's correct, the java_home command only works for jdk's - sorry for the confusion.
    For jre7+ versions, only a single Oracle jre version is allowed to be installed on the machine at a time - making a tool like java_home redundant for jre checking.
    Weirdly, jre7u10 does not supplant the Apple Java on the command line path by default. If you just type java -v, then the Apple java version will displayed if you have an old Java 6 from Apple and a new Oracle jre7+.
    The Oracle jre is always located under (also somewhat strangely):
    /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/javaTo test jar launching, I used the willow JavaFX browser pre-release jar available here:
    http://code.google.com/p/willow-browser/downloads/detail?name=Willow-0.1-prerelease.jar
    Then I launched the jar from the command line using:
    /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java -jar Willow-0.1-prerelease.jar The JavaFX jar ran fine on jre7 with the above machine.
    The test machine was running Mac OS X 8 with Oracle jre7u10 installed as well as the Apple Java 6 runtime, but no Oracle jdk7+ installed.

  • How to pack .class or .jar with jvm into an exe file?

    In fact, .class or .jar files are middle layer files who need JVM to explain and run them. Sometimes it's unconvenient. Why not provide some tools to pack .class or .jar with jvm into exe file?

    because java should be able to run on any OS. That is why SUN doesn't provide such tool. There are other company's who does provide such tool. Like JBuilder enterprise

  • Tools.jar: how to use it?

    in my app, I use some classes of tools.jar
    but I can not find the jar file in JRE directory, which is only in JDK directory.
    if I distribute my app to customers, they can not use it, because they possiblly only installed JRE rather than JDK.
    so how to use tools.jar?

    Isn't tools.jar the JDK tools, e.g., javac, javap, etc.?
    What are you doing that requires those tools, such that your customer needs it?
    Secondly are you sure that Sun's license allows you to distribute the stuff in tools.jar?
    It seems like the only solutions would be to refactor your code to no longer use tools.jar, or tell your customers that they have to install the JDK themselves (I've seen other products do that), or to possibly get a special license from Sun.

  • Sending "Cookie" header  with JRE 1.5.0_07 doesn't work with JWS

    Hi
    I have a JWS application that runs from JRE 1.4.0_XX to JRE 1.5.0_06
    The app sends a "Cookie" header to our webserver
    HttpURLConnection tc = (HttpURLConnection)repository.openConnection();
    tc.setRequestProperty("Cookie", "GLINK=TOKENID");
    Now this has worked thru 20 different runtime versions since 1.4.0_xx until JRE 1.5.0_07 was released. My code has remained unchanged for 3 years. And with JRE 1.5.0_07 the "Cookie" header is simply gone in the webserver or never sent at all. The changelog for 1.5.0_07 only has a rough description of what has changed. I can see that SUN has made som changes to class HttpUrlConnection in 1.5.0_07 by comparing class files against 1.5.0_06 and apparently disturbed som funtionality that worked before. Other headers are received but not the "Cookie" header. If the application is executed without JWS, for example with Eclipse or Jbuilder, the "Cookie" header is received by the web server and all other headers as well.
    Any ideas what SUN has done in 1.5.0_07 and JWS ?? and more specifically in class URLConnection or HttpURLConnection.
    Here is some code example to test the issue:
    Run this code with and without Java Web Start
    With JWS, the "Cookie" header is never received by the server.
    without JWS, the header value is reveived.
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class HTTPTest
    public static byte[] crLfArr = {13,10};

    tc.setDoInput(true);
    tc.setAllowUserInteraction(false);
    tc.setRequestProperty("Content-Type"," multipart/form-data; boundary=" + boundary);
    tc.setRequestProperty("Cookie", "GLINK=TOKENID");

    Hi,
    I decompiled the HttpURLConnection implementation in question from the rt.jar file. I do not think that you can find the source code for these SUN-specific implementations anywhere (except maybe through the new Java 6.0 collaboration process).
    JAD did the trick.
    For the standard classes (packages java.*, javax.*), I think that the most current source code is included in the corresponding JDK download.
    As to the JWS vs. standalone effect, I do not know what happens there.
    Maybe Java uses a different HttpURLConnection implementation when running as a standalone application?
    For our applet, the problem is definitely there. The cookie header was set but already removed when the CookieHandler method was called.
    The trouble is, that our applet can operate multiple independent sessions (with different session-ids), so a global CookieHandler is not an option. The only reason why I previously had to implement my own CookieHandler implementation in 1.5 was in order to remove unwanted Cookies which were otherwise inherited from the browser session by the CookieHandlers applet default implementation.
    I also entered a bug report (on Wednesday already)...
    regards,
    Gunnar

  • Is tools.jar portable?

    Is tools.jar portable across different platforms or is each tools.jar specific to an OS and architecture?
    Thanks!

    define "portable"...
    The classes will likely work on all Sun JVMs of the same build number.
    They might even work on Sun JVMs with different build numbers.
    They very likely will not (fully) work on non-Sun JVMs with any build number.

    Hi Ten,
    FYI, just by placing the ejb jar inside EAR project it will not be picked up for deployment. The EJB module has to be defined on EAR Module Assembly, and the steps are:
    > EAR Project | Properties, Deployment Assembly - Add EJB module
    NOTE: To verify the dependency you could try to export the EAR project to an .ear file. If the exported .ear file bundles ejb jar then deployment should work fine.
    As far as the deployment mode, OEPE supports WebLogic Split-source (default) and Exploded archive. In the default split-source mode, the .beabuild.txt contains the mapping to the actual files whereas in exploded archive the files are copied over to deployment staging location.
    Steps to modify deployment mode:
    > In the server view, right click on server configuration | Properties, select WebLogic | Publishing
    Please make sure the ejb module is defined appropriately and let me know if this resolves the issue.
    Thanks,
    Ram

  • Javac and tools.jar

    I'm having real trouble upgrading from 1.1.8 and getting on with tutorials. In summary SuSE 7.3 said it was installing java 1.2 however -version said I was running 1.1.8. I could not use swing components so I tried installing 1.4. I had problems getting that going but have now managed to sort out the classpath so that -version is 1.4.0.
    Unfortunately now javac now gives me command not found. I have had a read of material and see I should have a path to tools.jar. There is one in 1.3.1 should I also set a path to that but more importantly have I not got all that I need by downloading 1.4.0, if not what else should I have downloaded and installed.
    Help please all I wanted to do was learn java but I can't get going
    Richard

    Hi, how silly of us not to notice... that PATH command needs to point to the /bin directory in your jdk... /usr/java/j2re1.4.0/bin ...So sorry not to noticed that right off!
    Its good to set a JAVA_HOME environment variable, and then you can just use:
    export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2re1.4.0
    export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$JAVA_HOME/lib/tools.jar
    export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
    Other things (like tomcat and stuff) will find that JAVA_HOME variable and things will install better in the future. Watch too, you had a space before /lib (likely a typo in the post?) If that fails ...cd into that bin directory ...if still there is no javac ...something went wrong with the install!
    Good luck with this, we will watch for your success.
