Leopard Software Update 1.3 stops iMac from sleeping

I just applied the latest software update to Leopard (1.3) which is supposed to fix some freezing problems on 20 and 24 inch iMacs. I never had a freezing problem, but since applying this update, the sleep display feature does not work any more. Any attempt to sleep the Mac causes the hardware to sleep, but the monitor doesn't turn off. Whether I try using a hot spot to sleep the display or I go to the Apple menu and select sleep, the display refuses to turn off. (Interestingly, the OS is asleep, because the time in the upper right-hand corner does not change until I move the mouse and cause the computer to wake up).
Has anyone else been experiencing this behavior? Is it possible to uninstall a software update? I think I might want to do this until Apple resolves this bug...

I am having a similar problem. No matter what setting I have set up in system preferences, the display will go to screensaver and the hard drive shuts down afterwards. In tiger I would have the display go to sleep but keep the hard drive/computer still on. It is hard to overlook Leopards bugs.....

  • How do I stop iMac from going to sleep automatically after 15minutes of inactivity

How do I stop imac from shutting down automatically after 15minutes of inactivity, trying to play music but the imac keeps going to sleep, tried changing power saving preferences to never shut down, never go to sleep, unticked put the hard disks to sleep, automatically reduce brightness, but still goes to sleep.

    Try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • HT1338 The Software Update function on my iMac mid 2007 with OS X 10.8.2 fails to see new software

The Software Update function on my iMac mid 2007 with OS X 10.8.2 fails to see new software ,not with /Apple/Software Update or /About this Mac or /System Preference/Software Update, the problem started already with 10.8 and I had to download the 10.8.2 Combo manualy, installation was succesful, but since iPhoto11 (9.4) is now available my existing iPhoto11 (9.3.2) will not detect updates using AppStore or all the other ways, Any idee is welcome.

Glad you got your Mac fixed. But I hope you realize that an update can always go awry; corrupted download, stray voltage spike in your AC power, even a bug in the Installer of the Update. That's why it's never a good idea to update anything that affects your business for at least a week or even two AFTER the update comes out.
And this applies not just to the OS Update, it may be even more important with an update to one of the apps you need for your business! 8-| There's hardly ever a valid reason to make an Update while working on a clients task. Certainly no reason to make an Update during the work week. That's what Week Ends are for! LOL!
Basic rule for the OS Update, for me, anyway, is to NEVER use the Software Update version. I ALWAYS go to the Apple site and download the Combo Updater. It's often much larger, but it's never failed me. Maybe just that fewer people are hitting that server! Who knows? Who cares?
Second basic rule, WAIT a few weeks to see if there are problems associated with any update. What's the advantage of being the first one on the block with a problem?!
Third basic rule, try the download a second time. Bits/electrons are very slippery! Some have been known to fall out of the Internet "tubes!"

When I wake my iMac from sleep, the wireless does not connect.  I have to shut shutdown and then restart and then it connects.  I am running Lion 10.7.3  Any thoughts?

Been waiting along time for this problem to be fixed. Unfortunately the update hasn't help at all and even made the situation worse. Now my airplay connection from iMac to stereo abruptly stops after about 10-15 min. so I have to go over and quit wifi, start it up and find my airport network. Not sure why it always has a problem with the apple airport network. My neighbor's pc network is always there.

  • Can't use mouse/keyboard/trackpad when waking iMac from sleep mode

Basically as the title says. When I wake my iMac from sleep mode I am unable to use my keyboard/trackpad/mouse during the login window. Once the screen goes black by itself, after a minute or so I can then log in properly.
Yes the keyboard/mouse/trackpad are all connected when it wakes from sleep as I can use any of them to wake it from sleep, I just can't move them or type with them in the login window.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

When i wake up my iMac from sleep my wifi is disconnected.  It also disconnects my iPad, my wives iPad, my iPhone & Sky On Demand which is connected via wifi. To reconnect all devices i have to switch off & then on again wifi on the iMac. Can anyone help?

Had the same issue and finally solved it.  After the upgrade to Mavericks our 2 new Macbook Airs stopped connecting automatically to Wifi while the older machines the kids had still worked fine.
Bought a new airport extreme and problem solved.   Our Airport Extreme was about 5 years old and was probably not compatible with the new OSX.
BTW this was after trying everything people suggested on this forum and a 4 hour marathon tech support call with Apple where we reinstalled the OSX.
***** to need to spend $200 but glad the problem got solved.
New extreme is also mega fast so its all good.

  • Can Magic Trackpad Wake iMac From Sleep?

Can a Magic Trackpad wake an iMac from sleep? Actually, I know the answer is yes, but I want to know specifically is, how exactly can a Magic Trackpad wake an iMac from sleep?
I know that doing a physical click wakes an iMac. But should tap to click or just wiggling your finger around on the surface of the Trackpad work? Because for me it doesn't. The only way I can get my Magic Trackpad to wake my iMac from sleep is by doing a physical click.

    hello all,
I got my iMac in November of 2009, and ever since then, I just had to touch the mouse wake up the computer or turn off the screen saver. But last night, I updated to Lion, and now I have to actually click on the mouse to wake it up. Is there a setting that I can adjust so I can simply touch the mouse to wake up the iMac (sorry, I know it's completely trivial, I just want it to be perfect).
Thanks! Hope to hear from you guys soon.

after installing mountain lion, vnc wont wake up the imac from sleep. once awake, it works fine  any ideas?

Does your Mac have a wireless connection? Because if this is the case, wake up for LAN access seems to have stopped working altogether with Mountain Lion.

  • Trouble when waking iMac from sleep?

When I wake my iMac from sleep I get an error message on screen telling me there has been an unexpected shutdown.  Any clues as to the solution?

Thanks for the quick replies. When I look in System Diagnostic Reports there is nothing there, plenty in 'all messages.  However I did copy the messages sent tp Apple on the last problem which I paste below...

  • New iBook Stopped Waking From Sleep

    Hello,
I'm feeling a little sad because my two month old iBook has stopped waking from sleep as it usually does so quickly and above all else reliably.
The issue has occurred twice now, both today. The only thing I've done today which I haven't done before is run Onyx (daily weekly monthly).
The pulsing 'sleep light' comes on, but when I return to my iBook the light is no longer pulsing, the keyboard is hot and the iBook doesn't wake by lifting the lid, pressing power or space.
Anyone have any ideas? What are my options if not? Can anyone advise on returns times if I have to return to Apple?
Edit: Actually that's not true: I also added a user account today and turned on fast user switching. Shall I try a reset of the PMU? Will this have done any damage to my LCD, do you think? I think the keyboard was hotter than in normal sleep.
    Thanks!

This should be an interesting thread, mine did the same thing today.
I put it to sleep this morning at around 42 pct battery and when I came home this evening it was dead. Battery power at 0 and would not start until plugged into the wall. Then I had to reset the date/time.
Called up Apple and they told me the PMU reset itself. That it should not do this but sometimes does, and if it does it again to call back. Seems to be charging up just fine, but my confidence in what's been a flawless machine is shaken.
Didn't notice if my keyboard was hot because I left the screen open. Anyone else?

  • Does Time Machine awake an iMac from Sleep?

I'm just curious as to whether Time Machine backups awaken an iMac from sleep? Or does Time Machine sleep too? I'm not talking about display sleep, but system sleep.

    Hi:
    Short answer, no
Time Machine will, however, keep track of when the next backup is due after the Mac wakes.

I put my iMac to sleep by doing one of required steps. However, I cannot wake my iMac from sleep. I am using a wired keyboard and a wireless mouse.
May I know what is the problem?

    Hi nihow-
    But you are not done.
One of those devices is preventing your mac from waking. You may want to try plugging them back in one at a time and use it for a while to see if you can find the culprit.

  • Wake iMac from sleep remotely

Cannot wake my imac from sleep remotely unless on own wifi network. Tried splashtop & logmein. Checked obvious on settings. Using airport extreme. Have set uo both VPN for access anywhere.

Ok, all you should need to do is go into System Preferences --> Energy Saver  and make sure that the "Wake for network access" checkbox is checked.
Your iMac should be connected to your modem via ethernet cable. If not it may not work, depending on what version of mac OS X you are running.  Again, you DO NOT need an AirPort Express to wake you iMac from sleep via LAN.  you only need to tell you iMac to wake from sleep upon LAN activity.

  • No Macbook or 17" Intel iMac Leopard Software Update

Apple has released iMac Software Update for both Tiger and Leopard.
As always, the release notes are a bit sparse and simply states that "this update provides important bug fixes and is recommended for 20-inch and 24-inch iMac models with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8GHz processors." An analysis of the update packages indicates that updated graphics drivers have been delivered.
Some had hoped this would fix the intermittent Freezing problem that Apple had promised to address, but a couple of reports in our forums claim this problem persists even after applying the software update.
Really annoying the graphics haven't been improved for my 17" Intel iMac or Macbook its really sluggish. Does anyone know why? Is there one coming?

Yeah both have Intel graphics with 2 GB Ram. Installed on my friends 20" ATI graphics iMac and he had the same problem. Its not the actual system and apps which runs slow. Its things like the dock jerks as it comes up with magnification and general transitions and animation. This happens he when simply running finder. Never had this on Tiger. It was super smooth.
