Letter of Recommendation?

Our application requires two or more letters of recommendation.  This reference letter is, of course, private--the applicant cannot know the contents of it.  How can we implement this in the FormsCentral universe?

Hi,
It looks like you will need to create and distribute two forms. One form (form1) for your applicants and the other one (form2) for people writing the letters of recommendation.
You may want to include the URL to form2 in form1 and your applicants will have to provide this form2-URL to people whom they are requesting recommendation.
In form2 you may want to request the name of the person writing the recommendation, for whom they are writing the recommedation...etc, and a multiple-attachments field.
Once you get the responses from the two forms you will have to correlate/merge/track the responses manually (that is, matching applicants and letter of recommendations).
Hope this helps,
Lucia

  • Data access from Application Server - Seeking Opinion

I am working on a fairly large scale ERP application that is written in Java both on the front end, and middle tier ( using a JBoss application server ).
All of the database access happens in my app server, and when I wanted to get peoples opinions on the best way to extract and pass data to and from the database from the app server, and of course to and from the client.
I am using JDBC to make database calls and extra data from the database. This is of course pretty trivial. And I first started writing POJO that represent tables in my database. I then wrote a faily length method that uses reflection to call the setting methods and pass in the objects returned from the database result set. This of course becomes tricky when you start to join multiple tables together. And often you only need a small subset of columns in a table and don't require an object with all the columns from the table ( some set, and some as null objects ).
So then I decided I was use a combination of ArrayList objects and HashMap's to store the data. If a result set returned multiple rows, it would return an ArrayList of HashMap objects. Each hash map would contain the data for that row, and the hash map keys are the column names.
This seems to work pretty well and resolves the problem of joining multiple tables together and keeping track of which columns get stored in which objects.
Does anyone have a different solution or idea as to how to handle this? And thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Let me pose a quick Hibernate question as well.Let me recommend that you not be so thin-skinned about responses.
    >
If you had a table that had 40 columns in it and say 1000 rows. And you needed to run a query that returned all 1000 rows, but you only needed two out of the
40 columns. Would it be better to extract those two columns into the HashMap / ArrayList collection I mentioned in my original post? Or would using something like Hibernate and a class that mapped all of the columns in the table be okay? Why not just map the columns you needed in Hibernate? Who said you had to map all 40 and have them be null?
    My concern is on efficiency,
and I was wondering if building 1000 objects that each have 40 members that only 2 are populated is the most efficient way of extracting the data.Doesn't sound very efficient.
I will admit, my knowledge of Hibernate is limited at best so I may be missing a component of Hibernate that would allow you to only extract the columns you required, but you are still working with an object that has 38 null value objects for the columns you didn't require.I don't believe you're required to map every column in a table.

  • Can you use a roaming network and wireless extender at same time?

Greetings community - I've been struggling with an attempt to extend my wireless network for some time now. Please forgive my ignorance on the topic - I realize how 'simple' this is for many of you.  Let me summarize:
    What I have functioning:
    1. Comcast telephony modem
    2. 5th gen Airport Extreme as main wireless router connected to modem via Ethernet (corner of floor 3)
    3. 2nd gen Airport Express as wireless extender (hooked to a stereo on floor 2)
    What I want to accomplish:
    1. I have poor wireless signal on my sun porch (corner of floor 1 opposite side of building as modem)
    Extra equipment I have:
    1. Another 5th gen Airport Extreme
    2. Another 2nd gen Airport Express
What I have tried (and failed at):
    1. Initially I set up the second Airport Extreme as a second wireless extender and placed it at a further point away than my first wireless extender.  I quickly realized that set up does not function appropriately and one cannot connect to the further extender (I read about that on the apple forums).
    2. I tried placing the second Airport Extreme in a different part of the house at equal distance from the main router as the first wireless extender.  It's capability to extend was minimal if any.
    3. I tried connecting the Airport Extreme to the main router via an Ethernet cable with the hopes of creating a roaming network (which I read about on the apple forums). I would have to come up with a way to run the Ethernet through the house but I'm willing to cross that bridge later.  Once I got that set up, the 2nd gen Airport Express which was previously set up as a wireless extender is no longer recognized. Argh!!
    Questions/Theories/Suggestions:
    1. Is it possible to have a wired extender (via Ethernet) function at the same time as a separate wireless extender all connected to the same router?  If so how do I do it?
    2. I thought about keeping Airport Extreme #1 wireless connected to Airport Express #1 and call that Network 1.  Then plug Airport Extreme #2 directly into the modem to create Network #2 and use Airport Express #2 as wireless extender.  When I tried plugging both Airport Extremes into the modem, they both stopped functioning.
    3. Do I get a second modem to put somewhere else in the house and use Airport Extreme #2 and Airport Express #2 in that fashion?  My guess is Comcast will try to charge me a separate internet access fee to do that (boo!!).
I know there are a lot of brilliant folks out there.  I'm sure someone can read this and see the 'obvious errors' in my ideas and attempts.  I'm certainly open to new suggestions as well.
Thank you in advance for your time and advice.
    - The New Guy

Is is possible to rename the AEx 2 a different network name from the AEx1 and AE 1 (even though they are all connected to each other)? And say it is possible, would that potentially preventing the jumping?
No, in extend wireless the names must be the same..
However since you are creating a network on AE2 which is extended by AEx2 then you can indeed use a different name.. but it must be both,, AE2 and AEx2.
    2. Even more crazy - if I did (could) give the AEx 2 a different network name, could I use my AE 2 as a wireless extension to that second network?  Or is this just getting out of hand now?
You have lost me now.. there are ways and means.. but let me recommend a better solution.
Use EOP (homeplug in US) adapters if you cannot run ethernet. Multi-storey houses where you have heavy concrete construction are never going to work well with wireless alone. You are much better getting ethernet properly installed (which is the only 100% guaranteed method).. or buy a set of EOP adapters and give them a try.. they work in some cases and not others.. but better than wireless when they do work.
Otherwise I think you need higher power wireless routers.. but I can suggest you do the setup in a more controlled manner.
In other words do not use auto as per the airport utility.. use very short wireless names, different for both bands.. and fixed wireless channels.. then test which band works better.. Then you can do a link.. which will be slow but might give you better performance.
    So..
Link1 Main AE1---- AEx1 This is wireless extend.
Link2 AEx1--ethernet--AE2. AE2 is in bridge mode and is also set to create a wireless network. (Use different wireless name here to prevent confusion).
    Link3 AE2-----AEx2 Second wireless extend.
This overcomes the Apple limitation on multiple extends. It is not great setup but might get wireless to where you need it.. And better speed than you can get now.
NOTE>. I would personally never do this.. I will run ethernet forevermore.. having tried and tried in various places and using all kinds of equipment.. my conclusion is.. wireless is not suitable.. unless you can get enough signal in from one AP.. everything behind it must be ethernet.
It is much more expensive in some cases.. but ethernet works.. nothing else can be guaranteed to work.

  • How to restore my imac from a time capsule

My iMac had its OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks fully deleted and reinstalled in the Aple Store in Haarlem Netherlands yesterday.
Seen severe corruption problems of my KeyChain log-in codes.
Everything restored from iCloud was fully OK such as Contacts, Calendar, Mail, Notes.
But I lost all my iTunes data and iPhoto data, MS Ofiice data such as Word, Excel, etc.
My iMac however was connected through WiFi to a Time Capsule but I really do not know if the Time Capsule was ever set to ON under System Preferences. Or was it simply always set to OFF on my iMac.? .......
Question 1 : How can I find out directly on my Time Capsule if a separate Volume was ever made for this iMac ? And how can I restore that volume - if I find it back - to my iMac ?.
Time Capsule Program on my restored iMac seems to be fully empty. Last date is yesterday and nothing before.
Question 2 : When I connect my iMac directly through Ethernet cable to my Time Capsule I do not know how to find and retrieve (restore)  the speciic volume for my iMac.
Question 3 : how to delete the very old volumes directly on the Time Capsule which are not in use any more since years. ?
Question 4 : Any other suggetions for how to restore iPhoto and iTunes ? From iPhone, from iPod ? Let's not discuss Photostram here now.....
Thanks Apple Store - I seem to have a serious problem

Mavericks does nasty things to the Time Machine backups..
It tends to overwrite everything or certainly to hide it.
If the TM was not turned on, then it could not backup.
Let me recommend you spend the time reading the brilliant stuff Pondini wrote ..
He has specific info about restoring iphoto.
    See here.. http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
But read all the Questions, 14-17 so you understand how TM works..
The instructions for deleting old backups is Q12.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
But don't delete anything as you might at least get partial recovery from those files.
For a full restore or migration see this page.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
It includes setup and migration for OS up to Mountain Lion.
The guy who wrote all this info died before he had a chance to update it to Mavericks.. sadly.. he did a great service to the community.
Conclusion .. do not send stuff to Apple for repair before you make a disk image backup. Never trust Time Machine to do whole computer restores.. and Mavericks is a mess.

  • Urgent: Advice needed for buying my first RAID

    Hi,
I am looking to place an order today as I have a pile of editing to get through - so I would love to hear your recommendations!
First of all I am a networking and RAID newbie so don't go all acronym and geek-speek-tastic on me or I won't have a clue what you are talking about. Seriously I don't know my NAS from my elbow!
    My requirements are:
    1. Suitable for working with HDV
    2. 2TB of storage
    3. Must work with PowerMac G5 2GHz Dual (later model)
    4. Must support RAID 5
    5. RAID must be controlled by hardware (on RAID box or via PCIe card)
The following have been suggested - has anyone used them?:
    Opt1: http://www.enhance-tech.com/products/desktop/t4_cr.html
(Would probably need to put an eSATA card in my Mac but RAID control is on the box.
Only goes to 80MB/sec - is this good enough for working with ProRes 422? I am looking to convert my HDV to ProRes 422 before output to mpeg2 as I believe this can give better results.)
    Opt2: http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-SPEED-eS.cfm
(Would need to put a RAID controller in my Mac so not so good for connecting to other Macs.)
But I found this and was wondering if it was also suitable (as its cheaper!):
    Opt3: http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=11&pid=28&PHPSESSID=091b7808cfa54754 383932fc512ea056
(Would connect by 1Gb/sec ethernet to my Mac. RAID controller on the box. Someone said stay away from ethernet but I don't understand why?).
Any advice gratefully received. I need to make a decision real quick!
    Keep it mellow, B.

It appears that you need to step back and rethink your business. Heck, we don’t even know that you have a business. What you’re up to might just be personal editing. So I apologize if what I’m about to say overestimates you or underestimates you.
    FORMAT
You say, “suitable for working with HDV”, but you don’t say whether you MUST work with HDV. As others in this thread have pointed out, HDV is a “poor man’s Hi-Def”. It compresses images so diabolically in Long GOP that image quality suffers, and, as Shane points out, “the long GOP format is very complex and takes a LOT of time to do things.”
The other extreme is recording and editing in 1080i/p at 4K. Very few people in this world demand extreme quality. So, the best format overall is DVCPro HD. Today, DVCPro HD cameras cost only about a third more than the next nearest HDV. What’s more important, to me, is that DVCPro allows you to move away from having to use tape at all. It’s the year 2008 (almost). Tape is over. If it’s too late to sell your camera and switch, then so be it.
    STORAGE
You say, “2TB of storage”. For HD work, that’s a bare minimum. My recommendation is to get a 4-tray or 5-tray box with room to grow, even though the extra trays will remain empty your first 6-12 months.
Buy an empty enclosure that you can populate with your own drives. That way, you can use 1TB bare drives. (Don’t buy anything smaller.) You can put together a stack of 5 1TB drives in an eSATA RAID box for less than $2,000.
    RAID
You say, “PowerMac G5 2GHz Dual...via PCIe card”. You mean PCIx card. PCIe is for Intel Macs.
You write, “I want RAID (esp. RAID 5... If a drive fails I want to simply be able to swap a new drive in, restore, and be under way again.” But several of your comments indicate that you really don’t need in-line failsafe. For that reason, let me recommend mirroring or something even simpler: a backup drive.
JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) treats each drive in your stack as a separate volume. So, what you see on your desktop is Drive_01, Drive_02. If you subtract the cost for the RAID controller (in the box or in your PCI slot), you can afford to buy TWO plain JBOD boxes, and maintain one as redundant. That satisfies your, “If a drive fails I want to simply be able to swap a new drive in, restore, and be under way again.” In fact, you can skip the “restore” part.
Ken Summerall wrote: “If you are shooting HDV then you have the tapes, those are your backups. If a drive goes down you recapture.”
You responded, “that is not the same as having redundancy of data - and simply being able to swap in a new drive and do a restore.”
You make it sound as though you expect this to happen once a week. It won’t. Backup is good enough. That kind of “time saved” once every year or two isn’t worth it.
    SATA vs. FIREWIRE
Again, it’s the year 2008 (almost). Why would you want FireWire? Apple is being so stubborn, pretending that eSATA does not exist, because it has so much invested in its FW technology. But even Apple will be forced to come around in its next models.
While we’re talking about it, the claimed 80MB/sec for the Enhance T4 CR probably refers to the FireWire and USB interfaces, not to the SATA.
    ENCLOSURE SHARING
You write, “I also wanted to use the same RAID box with a Macbook Pro. So how would two Macs share the same RAID box?
What kind of sharing do you mean? If you mean that you and your partner can access the same video simultaneously in adjoining rooms, then you need FibreChannel. But, as Shane points out, “...a Fibrechannel setup, then an XServe Server...is NOT cheap.”
As Ken writes, “You can get a eSata card for your G5 and an ExpressCard for your MBP and share the box. With this you could get a Kona or Blackmagic card and capture your footage as DVCProHD and also have a way to monitor your HDV footage.”
    Amen.
    VENDORS
G-SPEED is reliable, with good support. Caldigit has a platinum reputation. Of course, there are MaxxDigital, Sonnet and Dulce Systems.
Enhance is the new kid on the block, and they are significantly less expensive with, in my experience so far, excellent build quality and quick (human) response. They manufacture in Taiwan, but they’re headquartered in -- and ship out of -- Lower California. So they don’t talk to you in Taiwanese as the cheap enclosure sites do.
    So there.

I would suggest you check this document
Installing Visual Studio Versions Side-by-Side which shows
We recommend that you install Visual Studio versions in the order in which they were released. For example,
install Visual Studio 2010 before you install Visual Studio 2012. Review the
Readme file on the Microsoft website for more detailed installation instructions.
And you could post that issue in the forum Cor suggested to get supports.

  • Converting .pdf to .doc

I converted a letter of recommendation from .pdf to .doc and for some reason it distorted the signature at the bottom so it just looks like a bunch of symbols. Does anyone know how to convert the file without losing the author's hand written signature? Thank you.

How did you convert: using Acrobat, or the ExportPDF online service?

  • What does it mean by a "file page"?

I have been trying to upload a PDF file to an American institution. The file is a single page letter of recommendation. The requirements for the letter are that:
    all files in PDF format
    File size < 500KB
    Can't be password protected
File page cannot exceed a maximum size of 8.5 x 11 inches.
It's this last requirement that I don't understand. How can an electronic document have a physical size?
When I try and upload the file, I get blocked at that point, as an error message comes up saying the file page exceeds that limit.
I have done the letter as a Word document, converting it to a PDF
I have physically printed out the letter (easily fits on an A4 page) and scanned, then converted to a PDF
all to no avail, as the same message crops up.
Any idease? Am I missing something basic?
    Thank you,
    DFH2340

All PDF files, like most graphical formats, have a page size in inches at all times. This is not especially relevant when viewing on screen, but - depending on your options - it is relevant if the PDF is used for printing, or as a graphic, or for other purposes.
Since PDF files are typically made in another program and by "printing to PDF", the size of the PDF reflects the printout size from the original app. If made from a graphic like JPEG or TIFF, these all have sizes in inches too.

  • De-Screening in Photoshop

When you scan a previously screened image the existing halftone screen is visible.
    1) Try angling the image on the scanner bed to reduce the moiré effect as much as possible
    2) Run the despeckle filter on the image
    3) Let me recommend an extreme measure which may work for you.
Scan the halftoned image at a resolution to yield approximately 4 pixels per halftone cell. (IOW, if the image is screened at 150 lpi, scan at 600 dpi.)
Run the Median filter with a pixel radius of 3 (IOW, smaller than the individual halftone cell).
Run Unsharp Mask at 250% (or more), with a radius of 1.5, and a threshold of between 12 and 18 levels.
You might want to play with a limited selection in order to see what combination of settings you really want. The Median filter will blur your image and the point of the USM is to get some of the focus back.
Unfortunately, you will lose some detail and more subtle tonal variations will tend to flatten out. The trick is to avoid getting the picture looking like a painting, (unless, of course, that effect is acceptable, in which case, wail). Posterization is a problem with extreme settings.
(Lurkers: This is an if-all-else-fails measure. Warning: Professional driver on a closed track; do not try this in your car. Objects in mirror are larger/closer than they appear. Your mileage may vary. Taxes, title, dealer prep, and options not included.)
Also; you might try rotating the original on the scanner glass and seeing if you can cut down on the moire that way. Sometimes, esp with camera seps or halftones, the image is not screened with a true horizontal origin and you may abe ADDING to the moire.
It is *much* easier to remove moire from colour images than B&W, in so much that there are 4 half-tone dots (to form the rosette) for every one dot in Monochrome printing, and consequently the screen is effectively 4x as course for B&W.

    Addendum:
Check first to see if your scanner software has a Descreen setting. - Some high-end scanner software such as FotoLook for AGFA scanners has this option with variable LPI settings. Other cheaper scanners has build-in descreening, in which case you wont ever see noticable screening.

  • Creating a config file

hello to all! I am new to Labview development and am currently tasked to
create a multi-functional tester that controls several instruments, 34401's,
TDS7104, HP6050A, 120-ASX AC source. I would like to get your ideas on how I
should create a single configuration file that would be used during the whole
duration of the tests (load regulation, line regulation,etc....). Different
tests require different conditions being set during the config file creation.
    For example:
Load Regulation would require me to tests the power supply at:
    a. MIN Input Voltage at MIN load current
    b. MIN Input Voltage at MAX load current
    c. MAX Input Voltage at MIN load current
    d. MAX Input Voltage at MAX load current
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi DonLabVIEW,
First let me recommend that you use the instrument drivers available at www.ni.com/idnet, our Instrument Driver Network. These drivers provide you with VIs that take care a lot of the lower-level details and will greatly aid you in your programming. You can select Search Drivers and search for your different instruments. We have drivers available for most of the devices you mentioned.
Now, I am not quite sure what exactly you are wanting to do with this configuration file. Are you wanting to have some settings saved on your computer that you can read into the program to know how to set your instruments for the test? If so, you can use the File I/O functions, read in the file, and then parse out the data from the file and use it in the program to determine what settings you want. If you just have a sequence of tests you need to make, there are several ways that you could set up the program to do it on its own without having to read from a file. I hope your programming is going well, and please let us know if there is anything else specific that we can help you out with!

  • SAPscript printing address from FK03

    Hi everyone
I haven't dealt with tables and structures yet so please bear with me
We have a SAPscript that prints checks to our venders which prints the address with only 3 lines.
When I look at the SAPscript the address is coming from the table REGUH.
Inside tcode FK03 there are 2 lines for street.  The first field is labeled STREET 2 and the second is
STREET/HOUSE NUMBER.  Street/House number is printing on the check just fine and I can see that it
is being pulled into the table REGUH as field ZSTRA problem is I don't see the STREET 2 being pulled into
table REGUH at all, and if I check inside FK03 all the fields under the STRUCTURE ADDR1_DATA.
So I'm not sure where REGUH is getting its data or how to get my extra street information onto the SAPscript
    Thanks in advance

I'm still a bit confused by your approach since it seems that you're referring to the ADDRESS command but the only thing you show in your example is a direct field output.
As far as the 'Pay to...' line goes, though I'm not familiar with your specific design, since it seems that you're working with blank check stock, let me recommend that you separate the 'Pay to' text window from the actual payee information with the name & address.  In your payee address window, you would use the address command similar to the following:
    /:           ADDRESS PARAGRAPH L8
    /:             NAME        &REGUD-ZNM1S&, &REGUH-ZNME2&, &REGUH-ZNME3&, &REGUH-ZNME4&
    /:             STREET      &REGUH-ZSTRA& &WA_ADRC-STR_SUPPL1&
    /:             POBOX       &REGUH-ZPFAC& CODE &REGUH-ZPST2&
    /:             POSTCODE    &REGUH-ZPSTL&
    /:             REGION      &REGUH-ZREGI&
    /:             CITY        &REGUH-ZORT1&, &REGUH-ZORT2&
    /:             COUNTRY     &REGUH-ZLAND&
    /:             FROMCOUNTRY &T001-LAND1&
    /:           ENDADDRESS
Now I realize that your case is a bit different in that you have 2 streets but won't want them to appear on the same line, so you may want to play with moving the first street value up to the name line.  The values wrap as well if too long.
You can use additional specifications such as LINES to control the output.  You'll want to refer to the help files.

  • SQL Express 2014 Global Rules Failure Persists

I have been running afoul of a SQL Server Express 2014 Installation Rule:
This computer does not have a required update for .NET Framework 2.0 or .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 that is needed for a successful installation of .NET Framework 4 and Visual Studio components that are included in SQL Server. To continue, download and install
the required update package from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=196047. A computer restart is required after installing this update.
I have disabled/enabled .NET Framework 3.5 in order to re-install the framework to no avail.
I have attempted to install the .NET Framework 2.0 (for some strange reason) with no luck.
I have attempted using the .NET Framework Clean Up Tool HERE.
I uninstalled and have attempted to install this
    update.
All of this to no avail however. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

  • Microsoft Publisher files

Can you import Microsoft Publisher Files into Pages to edit?

Welcome to the world of Macs -- as a convert about 5 years ago myself, you are coming across some of the things that make Macs completely different from PC's -- and the inability to communicate well between PC and Mac users is one of the main differences.
FIrst -- let me recommend a book to you that was invaluable to me in my own switch many years ago -- it's called The Missing Manual: Switching to the Mac....it's constantly being updated, so I am not sure what version it is in right now -- but it will get you really familiar with the differences between the two systems really fast, and has some great information written in PC terms for new Mac users...
Second -- unlike one of the previous posters, I have found nothing as good for day to day desktop publishing as MS Publisher -- in my opinion, it is the one single application the MS has that does exactly what casual DP users need. The most recent update for MS Office for Mac does include Publisher as part of it's Word program -- it incorporates most of the features of publisher in the Desktop Publishing view of Word -- it does not work with PUB files, everything is in DOC format, so it is clumsy and doesn't do everything that Publisher does, but it is the closest thing on a mac to the familiar publisher program you know. You might want to download the 30-day MS Office for Mac trial version, and see what you think. Personally, I didn't use it much, and found that Pages just looks and works better.
Next -- Pages doesn't have all the templates you might personally need out of the box. Because Apple software is generally open source code (not really, but lets use that terminology for simplicity's sake) a lot of third party software developers create things for the software -- Google "iWork templates" or "Pages templates" or "Numbers templates" or "Keynote templates" and you will find all sorts of companies that provide templates that you might prefer for your documents.
Then -- you need to be aware that Apple designs all of their programs to work around their own applications and they are more splintered than Windows software -- WHere MS designs programs like Outlook that seamlessly interact with Word, that isn't the case with a Mac....also, the software is really geared toward sharing with other Mac users, and doesn't always play well with Windows users...FOr example, you an use iCal to publish your calendars and let others access them and it works awesome in theory -- that theory being that the entire world runs like Cupertino, and that only Macs are used by all of your friends and family. We all know that isn't true.
The easiest way for you to do some of that on a mac is to use the Stationary in your eMail to send e-mails that show up, rather than go as attachments -- but again, you will most likely have to find google-able templates for Mail Stationary, since a lot of the things you want to do aren't going to be there out of the box (again, Apple does this on purpose -- why would they accommodate making it easier for Windows users, when those same Windows users can envy what a mac can do, and possibly ultimately switch themselves)...It's been like this for a decade, and I can't see it changing anytime soon.
If you absolutely must have 100% compatibility with Word users, your going to find MS Office for Mac to be a better option -- if that is NOT 100% compatible with Windows users, but it's the closest you are going to get, so a trial might be in your best interest...
As to standalone Desktop Publishing programs for the Mac -- you have the high-end Adobe InDesign, which many serious DP people use -- it's elegant, and creates beautiful things, but it is too expensive, and it has a very steep learning curve -- it does nothing out of the box, and doesn't even have built-in templates.
At the middle of the pack is Pages; and the document layout version of Word in MS Office for Mac 08
At the affordable standalone end is The PrintShop 2 -- it is a huge program that will handle just about any publishing project you throw at it -- it is also very easy to use. It's the closest standalone program to MS Publisher that exists for Mac. (There are others that do this, but they are in no way as comprehensive and easy to use as PS)...but here is the caveat -- it uses its own proprietary file and extension system, so you can't exchange published items with Windows users (unless you convert to a PDF, and then you might as well have just used Pages or Office). It does have some very basic internet publishing capabilities, but it is almost 98 percent geared toward printed materials - cards, labels, brochures, newsletters, printed calendars, greeting cards, etc.
As to making sure your newsletter is embedded opened rather than as a file, I will let others share their experiences -- I haven't found anything that works 100% of the time -- you could convert it to HTML code and embed that, but I wouldn't even know where to start with that.
(By the way, sticking with Pages, it doesn't have a built-in calendar -- but search this same forum and you will find a pretty nifty template for monthly calendars)
