Sorry if this has been discussed before.
Very new to macs (former PC user)
I have a MacMini with 10.4.xx (cant remember the next #) with 2g ram and intel processor.
Making a slideshow in IMovie and buring in IDVD.
I have made two different slideshows and each has (what I think is) letterboxing issues.
The 16:9 formatted show did not letter box on a standard 4:3 tv (confirmed settings on dvd players and multiple tvs).
I just did a 4:3 slideshow and it appears normal on the computer, but the final product seems to 'zoom' in slightly and cuts off the top 5% of the images (which, unfortunately cuts some faces off...).
In IDVD, i have the 4:3 setting checked.
Is there something I am missing ???

I'm pretty involved with home theater already, so I previously checked all the settings on the TVs and DVD players - assuming that was the issue. I tried various standard def Tvs and HDTVs/projectors... But, everything is set up as it should. I verified the problem on multiple TV sets, and multiple DVD players - even tried changing all the picture mode settings.... no luch with either of my projects.
I am now assuming IDVD is creating the problem... and since I am very new to mac's, was looking for advice here.

What am I doing wrong with this filter (counter/frequency issue), probably another newb question.
I extracted the part of my VI that applies here. I have a 6602 DAQ board reading a counter for frequency, using a Cherry Corp proximity sensor. Getting a lot of noise and errant ridiculously high readings. Speed of shaft which it's measuring is currently 2400rpm with one pulse per revolution so 40hz.
Trying to use the express filter VI to clean up the signal and ignore anything over, say, 45hz and under 35hz. No matter what setting I choose I continually get the 20020 error, Analysis: The cut-off frequency, fc, must meet: 0 <= fc <= fs/2. I know this relates to sample period somehow, but for the life of me I can't understand what I'm doing wrong.
I used this VI without filtering on bench tests with a hand-drill and got perfect output every time. Now it's on the machine and being erratic. Any help here will ease my stress level significantly, thanks.

I'm not sure about mounting your sensor to your rig, but I can provide a couple ideas about the filtering. Depending on the type of noise, the digital filters on the PCI-6602 could help eliminate the behavior you are seeing. If the noise manifests as a "glitches" or a bouncing signal, you could use another counter with a minimum period to help eliminate the noise. This concept is discussed in greater detail in this KnowledgeBase. I noticed that you are using NI-DAQmx; the practical application of the digital filters on the PCI-6602 in NI-DAQmx is discussed in this KnowledgeBase. A more detailed description of the behavior of these filters is provided in the NI-DAQmx Help (Start>>All Programs>>National Instruments>>NI-DAQ) in the book entitled "Digital Filtering Considerations for TIO-Based Devices".
I also wanted to comment on your original post and explain why you were receiving error -20020. For convenience, I have copied the text of the error code below.

Possible reason(s):
Analysis: The cut-off frequency, fc, must meet: 0 <= fc <= fs/2.
I think you may have misunderstood exactly what the Filter express VI does. The Filter express VI takes a series of values in a waveform and performs filtering on those signals. So, it will look at a waveform made up of X and Y values and apply the defined filter to this waveform. Specifically in your application, the cut-off frequency (fc) is the Upper Cut-Off level that you specified in the Filter express VI; any frequency components of the waveform outside of the range you have defined will be filtered. The fs is the sample rate based on the data that you wire to the Signal input of the Filter express VI. In your VI, this data is coming from the DAQ Assistant. So, fs will be the sample rate of the DAQ Assistant and is associated with the rate at which points are acquired. The sample rate does NOT relate to the bandwidth of the signal, except that the Nyquist theorem tells us that the sample rate must be at least twice the signal bandwidth in order to determine periodicity of the signal. So, in this case, the sample rate of the DAQ Assistant would need to be at least double the high cut-off frequency.
However, you are performing a frequency measurement using a counter. I think this is where the confusion comes in. For the frequency measurement using a counter, the DAQ Assistant returns a decimal value which represents the rate of the pulse train being measured by the counter. It does not return the actual waveform that is being read by the counter. It is this waveform that would be band-pass filtered to eliminate frequency content outside of the filter's bandwidth. Instead of the Filter express VI, I would recommend that you simply discard values that are outside the range you specify. I have modified the code you posted earlier to perform this operation. The image below shows the changes that I made; rather than using the Filter express VI, I simply compare the frequency to the "Low Threshold" and "High Threshold". I use a Case structure to display the value on if it is within the limits. Otherwise, I display a "NaN" value. I have also attached the modified VI to this post.

My question is i found a setting that allowed you to see the amount of free space of connected drives - i.e it gave me information about my Mac HD under the drive name, how do i show this again i cant find the option to turn it on for love nor moneyHi there,
Click anywhere on the Desktop to select Finder. With Finder selected, click on View in the menu bar and then chose *Show View Options*. A window will appear for the Desktop. Check the *Show Item Info* box and then close the window. Now you will be able to see the information underneath the icons on your Desktop.

What happens to my local user data? -newbie question sorry
Hi All,
Firstly apologies if this seems a dumb question, I've scoured the forums but I require something that fits my specific situation.
I've had a (my first) MacBook for about 9 months, built up a fairly healthy local user, setup just how I like it, MobileMe, iTunes, Chrome, iPhoto library, lots of other apps, etc etc and so forth.
I'm setting up a Mac Mini Server, and was wondering what I can do to join the new server, but take all my settings/downloads/iTunes etc with me... I don't want it all stored on the server, but I come from a Micro$oft Windows background. With MS, when you add a PC to a domain, login with the appropriate user account, you have a fresh profile, no settings, no files, no customisations etc etc is this also the case when I hit that Join Network Account server button on my Mac? Will I get a blank fresh account on my Macbook?
I'm guessing this must happen quite often as people start their way into Apple technology and build up a nice healthy local account before branching further into the Apple world...The two laptops I use everyday have access to all the servers via my network account. It is set so that my user account is listed as having "no home" So I log into the laptop with my local user account with a UID of 501 but access all the network services via the go menu and my network account of the same name but with a UID of 1034.
For all other users in the company, if they are on a laptop, I use network accounts. The machines are managed to ask if the user wants to create a mobile account when they login. For permanently assigned laptop users, the answer is yes. This puts their home on the laptop and ties them to that machine. I use mobile account syncing to make sure their critical data is copied to the server for backup.
By having the machine ask to create the mobile account, users can answer no and login to their network home. The use of the laptop may be needed temporarily if a regular workstation is down.
Once in a while I will need to convert a local account to a network account. While a bit more laborious that setting it up correctly at the beginning, it can be done.
But I never let any user account have the UID of 501. I would set that up as the local admin account I use for installing updates and performing other maintenance. If needed, I would back up the user data and erase and re-install the OS. -
I assume there's a stupid, easy answer for this, but I just switched to Mac (macbook pro) and am finding it odd that every time I install a new program it creates a new "drive" folder on my desktop, which then disappears when I restart my computer, meaning that I have to reinstall, say, Firefox every time I restart. What do I need to do to keep this from happening?
drag it from the "drive" onto your desktop, or better, into the Applications folder
I really would not put my applications on the Desktop, if I were you. They belong in the Applications folder, and that really is where you want to put them or you will experience problems in the future. If you insist on being Windows-like you are perfectly free to put an alias of your Apps on the Desktop.
For quick access to your applications I recommend Himmelbar.

[SOLVED] cool'n'quiet & modprobe newbie question
This is probably very newbie question, but I have no idea what to do.
I want to have cool'n'quiet working on my amd64. I turned it on in bios, and downloaded powernowd.
When I type:
> modprobe powernow-k8
> powernowd
it works. I added powernowd to demons in my /etc/rc.conf but after restarting computer it doesn't work - I have to type both commands above again.
How to make my system not forget loaded module after restart?

Personally i would opt for powersaved, since i think it's more full featured (it's more a _power_ than a _cpu_ manager), but then again you may not care for anything other than controlling the cpu stepping/speed. -
Probably incredibly simple question, so sorry. I have just changed e-mail after many many years and I want to e-mail everyone in my mac mail client with the new e-mail address at the same time.
If you are using Address Book, open it, create a new Group, select all you contacts by click the top one while holding down the shift key and then select the last one. Drag the contacts to the group, then send an e-mail to the group.

I know it's a windows thing, and I am now converted to Mac but I gotta know this because it's doing my head in. It's a complete stupid green gilled newbie question.
When installing new programs on a Mac can you create shortcuts to the programs on the Dock? I did what I THOUGHT it would be, i.e I made an Alias and stuck it in the dock, but on rebooting my Mac later on, in place of the shortcuts where 3 question marks which when clicked on did absolutely nothing???

Windows XP Pro Desktop, Macbook Pro, 60GB iPod Video Mac OS X (10.4.5) OS XYou aren't installing something from a dmg file are you? The dmg is a disk image – kind of a virtual CD. So when you double click the dmg and then get the little disk/hardrive/custom icon on your desktop that is the same as if you had mounted a CD. You then need to drag the application off of that "CD" into your application folder. Then it is truly installed.
You can then "eject" the icon your your desktop. This is what happens when you shutdown and without remounting the image your dock shortcut can't find the original.

How do I setup the Server to catch my external eMail adresses and send it to my internal account.
And how do I setup to send throw my server to the rest of the world without getting banned and
blacklisted

Any domain you want to receive mail for goes into the Local Host Aliases pane (in Advanced-> Hosting tab). However, you said that you can already send and receive internally so presumably you have it set up for a domain already? If this is not the same domain as you want to use, just change whatever settings you are using to your real domain. You can then test sending and receiving internally for your own domain but without changing your external (public) mail provider. When you are ready to change your outside mail server for your own one, get the public MX record changed so that all external mail starts getting directed to your own server.
how to get the public DNS record (MX Record)
If you have a 'real' domain then someone is hosting your DNS for that domain. THis is probably whoever you bought the domain from. You need to get them to change your MX record (or the IP address for the host name record which the MX points to - see my first post).
Is it really impossible to catch the external email-accounts with the server via pop.
my idea behind that is to synchronize the external email accounts with the email accounts on the server..
I have never really looked into getting a mail server to use a pop download from another external mail server - it may be possible by manual configuration but it never made sense to me. Why have two mail servers in a 'chain'? Basically, the public will see only one server responsible for your mail (via MX record) - you have to decide whether you want to leave this with your external provider or take the responsibility yourself.
Your configuration for the incoming mail seems to me like you would change the
external email server completely to my internal server.. right ??
Correct. Once the public MX record is changed then all other mail servers will send to your server and not your current provider. You can always revert back by changing the MX record back to your existing provider (as long as your account is still open).

Any option?Setting up a mailserver and making sure it doesn't suddenly turn into a spambox is not something you do with the use of a few commands. I suggest to dive into the Solaris admin guide on docs.sun.com and read up on e-mail and network services.
If that is asking too much of your time you'll be better off getting your ISP to handle all this for you. -

Newbie question - XML version, searching by artist
Probably quite a common problems - apologies for newbie questions.
I've changed the URL of my MP3s in my XML to a new location and refreshed my feed. Is there a way of seeing what version of the XML iTunes is using? (it takes around 24 housr to refresh, right?)
Also, when I'm searching for my podcast by author it's not coming up (<channel><itunes:author>) - is there a reason for this or a way to get it to show up when people search for the artist, other than doubling it in the title? (This works by the way, but I'd prefer not to!)

I have recently purchased the SG200-08 Smart Switch, but I have a few "newbie questions" about it as I get started using it.
The on board firmware shows 1.0.1.0. Is that the latest firmware to the switch?
Do I need to enable IPv6 Auto Configuration and DCHPv6 in my switch settings to be ready for IPv6 as my ISP rolls it out down the road?
How do I go about changing the switch's username? I was able to easily change the password, but having issues getting the username to change.
Do I need to do anything about the LLDP-MED settings? What exactly is that?
How do I confugure the System Time Settings so the switch functions in my time zone (USA Central Time)?

My guess is that NAT is already on - you have one public IP address from your ISP. Your router will use NAT (network address translation) to allow multiple clients (and either dynamically assign them private IPs via dhcp or you set them statically) to connect to the internet using the one public IP. It also sounds like your RV042G is assigning both ipv6 and ipv4 addresses, and theres nothing wrong with that. Unless you have specific information re: ipv6 from your isp, however, I would suggest not worrying about it until you hear from them. Are your macs connected to the router via the SG200 switch? If so, it looks like its passing ipv6 just fine. UPnP is something completely different - thats with opening ports like you mentioned - its a way that your devices can communicate with the router to automatically enable the proper port forwarding for the device/application.
Regarding the username, create a new user account. I don't think you can edit the cisco user, but try deleting it after creating and testing a new user account..
I'm not familiar with the Polycom system, but I would leave the settings as default unless you are using true IP phones (rather than an ATA adapter). From a quick google of the polycom device, I don't think you will gain anything from LLDP/CDP as the handsets use regular cordless phone freqs. With my setup, we use cisco IP desk phones and cordless wifi phones, CDP makes life easy as the cisco access point, wifi phones, cisco switch, and cisco desk phones (connected via ethernet) see each other and know what they're dealing with automatically.
I don't see the SNTP setting for unicast / broadcast that you're looking at. For the switch to get the time from a sntp server, under administration -> time -> sntp settings, add a server, and then back on time-> system time, enable sntp server as the main clock source. What are you using as your sntp source? Do you have an internal sntp server? You don't need to enable dhcp on the sntp server.
