Library backup / management issues

New user, so please pardon the simplicity of the issues:
1. It seems the backup option will only backup to cd/dvd. How do I backup my library to disk? For example, I was thinking of getting a USB hard drive and I'd like to be able to backup the library to it. Is this possible?
2. If I change the location of my library in the preferences, will that actually move the library to the new location?
3. How do I move my library to another computer?
Thanks for the help,
Bob

If you simply want to backup iTunes...
Copy the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
The end.
Export the .xml file and copy that file
Okay but you didn't need to do that.
Just use the existing iTunes library file, especially since the iTunes library.xml file does not contain all the info in the iTunes library.
If you want to move you iTunes library to a new hard drive and use it from there...
1 - Quit iTunes.
2 - Copy the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
3 - Click on the iTunes icon to start it, then immediately press an hold the 4 - Shift key in Windows, Option key in Mac.
5 - iTunes will ask to *Create new library* or *Choose existing library*. Select *Choose existing library* and select the *iTunes library* file in the folder you just moved.
6 - Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
7 - Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.

  • Acer Backup Manager Issue

    Hello,
I am new to this forum but I did check the data base for past similar issues.  I recently started using Acer Backup Manager and all seems to work except for backing up "My Favorites".  It startes to backup and after a period of time I get an error message that reads "Unable to read from or write to the database". I have tried several times with different memory sticks but get the same results.  This occured when I used Windows 8.1 and the problem is still there after I upgraded to Windows 10.  My laptop is an Acer Aspire/V5 and the ser# is NXM49AA012****.  I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to where to start or if this problem has occured to anyone else?
    Thanks

Hi there, Yes there is no available driver on the acer site as ELAN or Synaptics is like a third party software..
You may check it on your mouse properties under device settings.
If your touchpad is just disabling on its own or sometimes freezing then will go ok again
thats a software fault only .. driver reloading or doing  a factory reset will fix this.
Note:If this issue just started few days ago or just 1-2 weeks ago
try running system restore on the machine and choose the date when the touchpad is working fine with no problems
as this is a possible update problem only.
If your touchpad is just Disabling on its own and you need to turn it on again by pressing Fn+7
its a possible softward or hardware.. if doing the troubleshooting steps above wont work.
You need to call Acer for assistance of repair for touchpad board replacement. As I said it started from the first start up after I've bought it. So I guess neither System Restore (which I tried to the earliest point, just in case) nor resetting it to factory settings would solve the problem.
I think its not disabling itself since I have to press Fn+F7 two times (to reset it not turn it back on).
Anyway, I was happy to find out that Acer released the Synaptics driver for the touchpad. However It did not solve the issue. Touchpad still freezing. I guess I'll be calling Acer for repair. I feel reluctant to do so though, since I've bought this laptop just two weeks ago.

  • Aperture Library Backup Copy Issue

    Hi!
I am hoping some you will be able to help me out with a problem I am having with my Aperture library.  I currently have Aperture 3, but I was previously running Aperture 1.
Recently I lost my HDD on my iMac, and I am starting to rebuild from scratch on my new OS and HDD.  I had made back-up copies of my files on an external Seagate GoFlex drive, and all of the files seem to be intact.  However, I am rather stumped with my Aperture library.  I distinctly recall having manually copied my library file from my internal HDD to my back-up external drive a few months back.  And I recall waiting for hours while the system reported "copying XXX of 90GB".  Given the length of time it took and the report of copying XXX of 90GB, I had assumed that it had copied the full library.  The problem I have is, now that I view the back-up file on my HDD via Finder, it only registers as an 80MB file.  Yet, when I check the free space left on the HDD, it registers as if around 90GB is consumed.  I am assuming this is actually the space consumed by the Aperture library.
What could be the problem here?  I am hoping that the file was actually copied and backed up properly, but, somehow, simply does not register properly in the Finder window.  Is there any way I can access the full file, since it seems to be consuming space?
I have already tried accessing the library via Aperture.  It reflects all of the project names, folders, even the file names.  However, the actual files to not come up.
It would be great if someone could clear this up for me, and, hopefully, help me access my library.
Also, moving forward, what would be the best way to back up my library, since this method of manual copying does not seem to work.
    Thanks.

What do you mean by "However, the actual files to not come up"?
The Aperture Library is Finder package.  It shows in Finder as a file, and can be treated as such.  Your backup choices are:
    - back up this file as you would any file -- manually triggered, and always a full back-up.
    - use Aperture's Vault feature -- this is a differential back, manually triggered.
    - use Time Machine -- also clever enough to do a differential back-up, automatically runs.
Note that this is for only the Library.  If any of your Images have Referenced Masters, you will have to back them up separately (Referenced Masters are not included in the Library, and thus are not backed up by the Vault.)

  • Help!! Can someone help me with this message I keep getting before startup, please ?? Here it is: "/Library/Startupitems/Intego Backup Manager Pro" has not been started because it does not  have the proper security settings. Help!?!?

    Hello:
I keep getting this message upon startup. Can't figure out how to address it. Here it is.
"/Library/Startupitems/Intego Backup Manager Pro" has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings.
    Any suggestions?

There's an invisible one name "Icon" according to the error message.
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder.  At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    killall Finder
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
First, make invisible files visible. Find the invisible file in that folder and remove it. Please be sure you are looking in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder. There is another one in the /Home/Library/ folder. Be sure you look in the right one.

  • The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Profile and Device Manager Issues

The following article also applies to issues after re-setting the severs' hostname. It also applies to situations where re-setting the Code Signing Certifictateas described by Apple has not resolved the issue.
    Hello,
I have been plagued with Profile Manager and Device Manager issues since day one.
I would like to share my experience and to suggest a way how to resolve issues such as device cannot be enrolled or Code Signing Certificate not accepted.
I shall try to be as brief as possible, just giving an overview of the steps that resolved my issues. The individual steps have been described elsewhere in this forum. For users who have purchased commercial SSL certs the following may not apply.
In my view many of these issues are caused by missing or faulty certificates. So let us first touch on the very complex matter of certificates.
Certificates come in many flavours such as CA (Certificate Authority), Code Signing Certificate, S/MIME and Server Identification.
(Mountain?) Lion Server creates a so-called Intermediate CA certificate (IntermediateCA_hostname_1") and Server Identification Certificate ("hostname") when it installs first. This is critical for the  operation of many server functionalities, including Open Direcory. These certs together with the private/public keys can be found in your Keychain. Profile  and Device Manager may need a Code Signing Certificate.
The most straightforward way to resolve the Profile Manaher issues is in my view to reset the server created certicates.
The bad news is that this procedure involves quite a few steps and at least 2 hours of your precious time because it means creating a fresh Direcory Master.
I hope that I have not forgotten to mention an important step. Readers' comments and addenda are welcome.
I shall outline a sensible strategy:
    1. Clone your dysfunctional server to an external harddrive (SuperDuper does a reliable job)
    2. Start the server fom the clone and shut down ALL services.
    3. It may be sensible to set up a root user access.
    4. Back-up all user data such as addess book, calendar and other data that you *may* need to set up your server.
    5. Open Workgroup Manager and export all user and workgroup accounts to the drive that you using to re-build your server (it may cause problems if you back-up to an external drive).
    6. Just in case you may also want to back-up the Profile Manager database and erase user profiles:
In Terminal (this applies to Lion Server - paths may be diferent in Mountain Lion !)
    Backup: sudo pg_dump -U _postgres -c device_management > $HOME/device_management.sql
    Erase database:
    sudo /usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB.sh
    7. Note your Directory (diradmin) password for later if you want to re-use it.
    8. Open Open Server Admin and demote OD Master to Standalone Directory.
    9. In Terminal delete the old Certificate Authority
    sudo rm -R /var/root/Library/Application\ Support/Certificate\ Authority/
This step is crucial because else re-building you OD Master will fail.
    9. Go back to Server Admin and promote the Standalone Directory to OD Master. You may want to use the same hostname.
    10. When the OD Master is ready click on Overview and check that the LDAP and Keberos Realm reflect your server's hostname.
    11. Go back to Workgroup Manager and re-import users and groups.
NOTE: passwords are not being exported. I do not know how to salvage user passwords. (Maybe passwords can be recovered by re-mporting an OD archive - comments welcome! ).
    12. Go to Server App and reset passwords and (not to forget) user homefolder locations, in particular if you want to login from a network account!
If the home directory has not been defined you cannot login from a network account.
    13. You may now want to restore Profile Manager user profiles in Terminal. Issue the following commands:
    sudo serveradmin stop devicemgr
    sudo serveradmin start postgres
    sudo psql -U _postgres -d device_management -f $HOME/device_management.sql
    sudo serveradmin start devicemgr
    14. You can now switch back on your services, including Profile Manager.
In Profile Manager you may have to configure Device Management. This creates a correct Code Signng Certicate.
    15. Check the certificate settings in Server App -> Hadware -> Settings-> SSL Certificates.
    16. Check that Apple Push Notifications are set.(you easily check if they are working later)
    17. You may want to re-boot OS Server from the clone now.
    18. After re-boot open Server App and check that your server is running well.
    19. Delete all profiles in System Preferences -> Profiles.
    19. Login to Profile Manager. You should have all users and profiles back. In my experience devices have to be re-enrolled before profiles can be pushed and/or devices be enrolled. You may just as well delete the displayed devices now.
    20. Grab one of your (portable) Macs that you want to enrol and go to (yourhostname)/mydevices and install the server's trust profile. The profile's name  should read "Trust Profile for...) and underneath in green font "Verified".
    21. Re-enrol that device. At this stage keep your finger's crossed and take a deep breath.
    22. If the device has been successfully enrolled you may at last want to test if pushing profiles really works. Login to Profile Manager as admin, select the newly enrolled device. Check that Automatic Push is enabled (-> Profile -> General). Create a harmless management profile such as defining the dock's position on the target machine. (Do not forget to click SAVE at the end - this is easily missed here). If all is well Profile Manager will display an active task (sending) and the dock's position on the target will have changed in a few seconds if you are on a LAN (Note: If sending seems to take forever: check on the server machine and/or on your router that the proper ports are open and that incoming data is not intercepted by Little Snitch or similar software).
Note: if you intend to enrol an Apple iPhone you may first need to install the proper Apple Configuration software.
Now enjoy Profile and Device Manager !
    Regards,
    Twistan

    HI
    1. In Action profiles, logon to system and recheck correcion are available in action definition as well in condition configuration and the schedule condition is also maintained. but the display is not coming(i.e in the worklist this action is not getting displayed).
You can check the schedule condition for the action and match the status values...or try recreating the action with schedule condition again....for customer specific ....copy the standard aciton with ur zname and make a schedule condition and check the same.
2, In suppport team of incident when i give individual processor it throwing a warning that u r not the processor. but when i give org unit it is working perfectly. Could anyone guide on this.
You need to have the empolyee role for BP ..goto BP and got here dropdown for ur bp and choose role Employee and then enter ur userid
also make sure that u have the message processing role

  • Final Cut Pro X File Management Issues

    I have several issues
    1. Does anyone know if it is possible to import from camera to the standard Mac file system?  I can't see a way to avoid importing media in the FCP library and I definitely DON"T want any of my media files in the FCP library.
    2. Also I know I can copy the media files out of FCP back into the file system but I am not sure how to delete the FCP copy and re-point everything to the media I have stored in a proper file structure on a specific media disk.
    3. It doesn't seem to be possible to have FCP default new libraries to a media drive - it only wants to create them on the boot drive and the library has to be moved manually.  Am I missing something?
    4. Backup is an issue now - it looks like a change to any component within a library will trigger a backup of the whole library - it certainly does with the backup software I am using, and who knows what Time Machine does with FCP libraries... (but Time Machine DOES appear to delete files without notice when it runs out of space, so it is not suitable for any environment where permanent data retention is an issue - so beware...)
ps: don't EVER use the "move to library" function.  If it crashes you won't get a reason, you can't undo or recover, and the originals may be deleted even though the media never made it to the other library.  This is not good...

Hi Tom:  It was "Move Event to Library" that crashed, deleting the media from the originating library but not copying it to the new library.
I lot of my issues are down to lack of familiarity with the new interface after migrating from the old Final Cut; manuals which are incomplete or in error; courseware created in earlier versions of Pro X and which have not been updated, and what I regard as counter-intuituive defaults and assumptions by the Apple development team.  I spend a lot of time searching for answers:  For instance I spent at least an hour searching in the manual and on the net for a way to extract or move the media from an FCP library.  I came up with nothing.  It would never have occurred to me to search for the term "consolidate".
Another thing that caused me an issue was that I copied a library from one drive to the other to create a backup before I started trying to regularise the media locations in the original library.  I changed the name of the backed up library in file manager.  When I open it, FCP still uses the old name - hence a library which is opened on one disk and appears to point to data on another.  In fact I hadn't noticed that there were two libraries of the same name open at the same time in FCP - the apparently duplicated library was in fact the backup library on the other disk which was renamed in file manager but not in FCP.
In iTunes and Aperture, which both use this bundled library approach, you can only open one library at a time.  FCP is different - and I have no problem with this, but any user familiar with the other products would assume, as I did, that FCP worked the same way.  That it does not gives rise to the possibility of confusion.
FCP is a very complex piece of software.  That means it is impossible to make it easy for a first timer to understand - an experienced Final Cut user has to unlearn as much as he or she has to learn - and all this places much greater reliance on the manuals.  The writers of the manuals need to try and put themselves in the heads of their users and make sure that their TOC, Index and terminology corresponds to the thinking of the user - not the new terms they have created for the new version (e.g.: "consolidate media" - which means extract media from the library and move it into the file system, but who would know?)
In an environment where the file sizes are enormous; a library may contain several hundred clips and audio tracks organised in various events and projects; FCP can crash and "disappear" media; the manual is hard to search and the software behaves in an unexpected manner (library names in FCP do not necessarily correspond to the actual name of the library on disk and multiple copies of a library can all be open at the same time, with the same name) this all creates a great deal of stress.  One mistake and a great deal of work can be lost irretrievably.
However, with your advice, I have consolidated the media files from my largest library and confirmed that the library holds only the metadata now.  However, the new file organisation is unusable, so I will now need to change the file names and reorganise them into subfolders that make sense to me - I guess I will find out if this breaks FCP's links.  At the same time I have to figure out which files in the original file structure correspond to the newly extracted files so that I only have a single set.
My big mistake was to copy the files into the library in the first place.  This is the default, and also recommended on the Lynda courseware (which was created on an earlier version of FCP).  Since most of my existing files were imported in the old version of FCP prior to the upgrade (so already on disk), this meant creating duplicates of all files initially. However, all the newer files are only in the libraries and not in the file system - reconciling this now is tricky.   Since I retrieve SD cards on my notebook in the field and then copy to my Mac Pro, some of the new files have ended up in the file system and not in the library.  I am yet to find out whether FCP will automatically pick up new files added directly to the file system, or whether they have to be "imported" through FCP before FCP can see them.
The overhead of all this duplication is enormous and the inconsistencies tricky, and it is only now that I understand better how FCP Pro X works (and that it can lose stuff) that I now realise I have to undo all of this and move the media back into file manager and out of the libraries.
If you have to transition to a new, and radically different, version in the middle of a project you really need to understand all the implications.  I did not.  And now that I do, it is difficult, stressful and time consuming to sort out.
If I were able to go back and give myself some advice it would be to ignore the defaults, create logical and sensible file structures for all your media, keep all media out of the libraries and use the file structure to force FCP to organise your clips in a logical manner so that you don't then have to go through and laboriously assign keywords to organise them in FCP.
I don't know if the way I work is very different to other film-makers.  This is a doco - typically around 5% of what is shot will make it into the final program, and I double that because I use three cameras a lot of the time.  That's about 40 hours of HD plus WAV audio files.  Some of the clips are an hour in length and impossible to synch between the cameras until they are chopped up and new combined clips created - this is very laborious!  An hour of HDD is about 400GB (more if I shoot raw) - so there will be about 2TB of data associated with this doco by the time I finish shooting.  In an interview I record a separate audio track - and I generally use this as the master track since it is the only clip which can be guaranteed to run for the full duration.  But FCP Pro X assumes that the master track will be a video file and it is not possible to add an audio file to the timeline first.  I found a workaround - but, again, I am fighting FCP and the developer's preconceived ideas about how people might use this software.
Apart from the doco itself various other projects use the same media - but I don't want these projects cluttering up the doco library which is already cluttered enough.  If the media is in the library I have to copy clips to other libraries for these other projects, leading to more duplication.  Its another reason to move the media out of the library and another indication that FCP was not really designed for large projects.
Even just within a single library, file management is unsuited to the volume of files I use.  For reasons known only to themselves, the FCP developers have used a very specific view of the file organisation - and its not the view I use in file manager (which is the column view).  That makes using the file management in FCP very cumbersome - but its essential if you have a large number of clips.  My smallest library takes 30 minutes to copy from one Thunderbolt2 disk to another, so creating a backup before changing things in a library is not a trivial event.
Also, the keyword process is clumsy and, I think, poorly conceived but it is the only way to organise clips if you haven't created a file structure prior to import.  I haven't yet figured out how to erase the keywords I used for one event so that I can reassign the keywords for use in another event.  But I assume that means that if I go back to the first event, I will have to put all the keywords back in - or ignore the shortcut keys and type them manually (which is necessary for much of the time anyway because there are only 9 - a good indication of the size of the projects for which this software was designed).  Also, oddly, there is no shortcut key that I can find for turning on/off the keyword window - which is annoying because it takes up a lot of screen real estate).  It is issues like this that leave the impression that FCP has been conceived as a kind of iMovie + and that it just isn't architected for real-world proper film making.  It can be bent to that, and it has some nice features, but I find myself fighting it a lot of the time.
After all of this I can't find a reason why Apple would create library "files" anyway.  What advantage does this provide over the standard file system?  What are the implications for backups?  (If you are backing up incrementally only the components within a library then how can you be sure any version of the actual library file is current?  And if not, then is any minor change to any file in the library going to trigger a full backup of everything - (in this case 1TB+)?  And how does this differ between various backup options?  Again, assuming FCP users are mostly making home movies, with small file sizes and using Time Machine then a library concept might make sense.  But that is iMovie thinking.  And that Apple have implemented a "move to library" function without any transactional integrity (no deletions should be made until the successful copy is confirmed) further underpins the non-professional positioning of this product.
I hope it improves with age...
But thanks again for your help - it was timely and very much appreciated.

After "Restoring iTunes Library backup" it wont link to the files in the iTunes folder. I've followed the procedure as described, and the iTunes folder is in the correct location. iTunes lists all my music correctly (albeit with no artwork), but can't locate any of the files.
I've been restoring my iTunes folder from a backup hard drive to a new computer on which I've downloaded the latest iTunes (10.7). If this is a newer version than the one I backed up with could this be the problem? (I had the latest (to my knowledge) iTunes when I backed up the folder about 3 weeks ago, was this version 10.7?)
Or is the version of iTunes (within recent updates) not an issue when restoring a library?
    Using Windows 7.
    Any help please?

From the top of the page where the scripts live...
The general method of use is to download the script to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist. Some scripts offer a choice of track by track confirmation of changes or fully automatic processing of the selection. Many of the scripts can optionally display a progress bar while running.
You are strongly advised to backup your entire library, or at the very least the iTunes Library.itl file, before use. Test the behaviour of your chosen script on a small group of files first to make sure it does what you want before applying it to large numbers of files.
Most builds of Windows will execute *.vbs scripts when you double-click them. If that doesn't happen then you might need to visit the Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features control panel to enable the Windows Scripting Host. I can track down details if you have issues.
Backing up and restoring data is an area that is often glossed over. Most people don't try to learn much about it until they've lost something important. (Me too )
If your iTunes library was in the usual layout then normally copying the whole iTunes folder from the User's Music folder in the old computer to the User's Music folder in the new one will usually work fine. Ideally this is done before iTunes is installed so that there is no empty library to replace, and all settings are picked up from the old library. This post contains more details.

  • Library Backups No Longer Being Created in 10.1.2

No matter what I do, Library Backups are no longer being created in 10.1.2. This is happening on all 6 of my production Mac Pros and iMacs. I can change the location of the Library Backup folder, but nothing is ever created in the new location. It's as if FCPX no longer knows how to backup libraries.
    Some background...
We are working with Libraries and Media files on our XSAN Volume.
    OSX 10.9.3
    FCPX 10.1.2
We did not notice the Backups were not being performed until one of our Libraries had an issue and we could not find a single Backup of the library.
    What I have tried...
Move Libraries to Local System Volume - Still No Backups.
Change Library Backup Location - Still No Backups.
Toggle Library Backup Location to No Backups and then Back to Backups - Still No Backups.
Ensure Proper Permissions on Library Backup Folder - Still No Backups.
Trash FCPX Preferences - Still No Backups.
ReInstall FCPX - Still No Backups.
I am at a loss at what to do next. I can't even see the backup process happening in console, or any errors that might give me a clue as to why it's not working. Short of trying to reinstall Mac OS on one of my production macs, I see no other alternative. Considering I'm having this issue across our entire production system, I'm wondering if this is a very serious FCPX 10.1.2 bug.
Is anyone else having these issues????

    Tom Wolsky wrote:
Definitely not working as advertised. I made a new library. Imported some stuff. Futzed around. No backup. Waited more than an hour. Made a new project and always immediately a backup appeared.
I've had pretty much the same results trying to sort out what is going on since the 10.1.2 update regards Library Backups.
I'm getting no backups with newly created Libraries like others, tried all sorts of juggling acts in the new settings arrangement trying to find a way in.
What I have so far discovered is that Libraries are not created until a Duplicate Project is created of the original Project for the Library, then it appears to do as expected.
    Seems like a bug.
Hope other users can confirm this.

  • Apparent problem with FCPX Library Backups storage

Will appreciate any thoughts about the following apparent issue with FCPX library backups.  Have been working for several hours in two newly created FCPX libraries to handle two new F55 filming projects.  Each library, regarding its respective FCPX-assigned Storage Location settings, has been positively set to place/store library backup data in a specifically chosen folder called Final Cut Pro Backups which sits in the Movies folder on my main hard drive. Notwithstanding this set of established data storage conditions, and continuous activity in FCPX for several hours, there is absolutely nothing regarding these libraries stored in the Backups folder, or anywhere else that I can detect. Any ideas about what is going on? Jon

    Hi Hejeefasd
you are not referencing the library properly. you should add these libraries by right Clicking on a Reference and Select Add reference and search for these library and add them into your project..
I hope your problem will be solved
    Thanks

    how dead is your computer?
Did the system drive survive? You could get try to remove the drive from the mac and have it put into an enclosue, so you can use it as an external drive.
But if the system drive is dead as well, I do not see a way to read the data on your dead computer.

  • Power Mac G5 DP1.8GHz - Bad Logic Board or Power Management Issue?

I have a Power Mac G5 DP1.8GHz/1.5GB/80GB which I bought non-working. It has not yet been disassembled or examined by a certified tech. This is it's issue (which replicates): the computer powers on. It makes a single warning tone, then the LED flashed at least 15 times (too fast to count). Then the posting chord is heard. Hard drive spins up. Then nothing (no video). Won’t boot from any disk. I have changed the RAM and tested the RAM banks with known-to-be-good RAM from another DP1.8GHz G5. The warning tone stopped once or twice after this switch, but then it didn’t chime. I changed the PRAM battery, but not with as new one. However, after installing the used one and then resetting the PMU, it displayed video briefly for the first time. While installed in the other 1.8GHz G5, the hard drive was formatted, given a clean install of OS X 10.4.11, and then moved into this computer where is never mounts. The computer is not accessible through TDM.
Do I have a bad logic board? Bad CPUs? A power managment issue? A RAM issue?

Through my own trial and error troubleshooting, I have found the CPUs to be in good working order and the logic board passes the Apple Service Diagnostic every time. Despite the installation of numerous pairs of modules that worked in another DP1.8GHz, the computer has a RAM issue-it gives the "no good RAM" tone most of the time when it powers up (after a PMU reset it does not). Also the computer boots from disk or into Open Firmware but the disk utility can't see either hard drive so I may have a bad SATA controller.

  • I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and now I can't back up iTunes library to disc.  In previous versions it was in file library backup to disc.  In iTunes 10.5 that is gone!

I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and now I can't back up iTunes library to disc.  In previous versions it was in file>library>backup to disc.  In iTunes 10.5 that is gone!

Some of us have our enture itunes library backed up on CD/DVD - what a waste of time and effort as now presumably you can't use these discs to restore itunes on a new computer! WHY NOT APPLE?
Very unimpressed with itunes 10.5/ios5 - wifi tracking apps have been removed from the store (and won't function in ios5), it's impossible to sync photos (I have spent a whole day trying to sync my iphone 3GS with itines 10.5) to no avail and now, no CD backup facility.
I have never had problems with apple before - I was thinking of upgrading my whole system from PC to Mac but now I am doubtful - if this is typical of apple software, I will stay with windows!

Also, does reinstallation takes the back up automatically or the files will be lost. Please help.

Here are a bunch of scripts to get folder size under all circumstances.  Take your pick.

  • [Solved]Need help with backup-manager

So I'm trying to set up backup-manager to make.. well, backups. Their wiki has been shut down thanks to spammers, and ours has no specific entry for backup-manager, so I will have to do it with its man page and the (well documented) config file. However, I still have some questions. Sorry in advance for the amount of questions and the length of the topic. I just wanted to get this clear in one go.
First: I want to make a *full* system backup, so that I can restore my system in case of breakage without reinstalling. When I looked at creating backups in the past, I noticed some folders don't necessarily had to be backupped. What folders in / could I skip?
Second: I chose the tarball backup format. Would it then be safe to comment out all the other variables (for tarbal-incremental/mySQL) backups?
Third: Now there were some parts of the config file that I didn't understand. I hope you can explain some of those parts to me.
    # Number of days we have to keep an archive (Time To Live)
    export BM_ARCHIVE_TTL="5"
That means the archive it creates will be removed after 5 days - but what if I copy it to my external hard disk? I don't think it will delete it then, so would it be safe to comment this out - or what will it do if I just keep it this way?
    # At which frequency will you build your archives?
    # You can choose either "daily" or "hourly".
    # This should match your CRON configuration.
    export BM_ARCHIVE_FREQUENCY="daily"
I either want to make a backup when I want to, or weekly - not hourly or daily. Is this possible with backup-manager?
    # Do you want to purge only the top-level directory or all
    # directories under BM_REPOSITORY_ROOT?
    export BM_REPOSITORY_RECURSIVEPURGE="false"
I don't understand that option. Could you explain me what it will do? Info: BM_REPOSITORY_ROOT is set to my home folder. It's the place where the archives are stored.
    # Do you want to replace duplicates by symlinks?
    # (archive-DAY is a duplicate of archive-(DAY - 1) if they
    # are both the same according to MD5 hashes).
    export BM_ARCHIVE_PURGEDUPS="true"
Will this harm anything in my system?
    # Do you want to dereference the files pointed by symlinks ?
    # enter true or false (true can lead to huge archives, be careful).
    export BM_TARBALL_DUMPSYMLINKS="false"
This would 'destroy' all symlinks, no? I'm going to keep this at false, but I would like to know.

Tried to do a selective upgrade & broke something this morning so I tried restoring my CompleteRaid0 backup, worked like a charm.
This is the latest backup script I'm using:
    #!/bin/sh
    # Little script to tar up the important root folders.
    # To untar, use:
    # tar -xvpzf /path/to/backup/<date>-backup.tar.gz -C </path/to/root>
echo "Do you want to clear pacman's cache before tarring up the root folder? This will save time in both the tar- and untar process."
    echo -n "(y|N) > "
    read a
    if [[ "$a" = "n" ]] || [[ "$a" = "N" ]] || [[ "$a" = "" ]]; then
echo "Pacman's cache will not be cleared."
    else
echo "Pacman's cache will be cleared now, please wait..."
    pacman -Scc --noconfirm
echo "Pacman's cache succesfully cleared. Continuing now..."
    sleep 2s
    fi
    DATE=`date +%m%d-%H%M%S`
    CB=CompleteRaid0-$DATE.tar.gz
    NB=FreshInstall-$DATE.tar.gz
    echo "********************************************************************************"
echo "Proceeding with Fresh Install backup $NB."
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    sleep 5
    cd /
    tar -cvpzf $NB --one-file-system \
    /boot \
    --exclude=/$NB \
    --exclude=/dev \
    --exclude=/etc/fstab \
    --exclude=/home \
    --exclude=/lost+found \
    --exclude=/media \
    --exclude=/mnt \
    --exclude=/proc \
    --exclude=/root \
    --exclude=/sys \
    --exclude=/tmp \
    mv $NB /home/chuck/Backups/
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    echo "Sleeping for 10 seconds."
echo "Proceeding with complete backup $CB."
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    sleep 5
    tar -cvpzf $CB --one-file-system \
    /boot \
    --exclude=/$CB \
    --exclude=/tmp \
    --exclude=/mnt \
    mv $CB /home/chuck/Backups/
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    echo "Backups Complete"
    echo "********************************************************************************"
    sleep 10
    exit 0
    Restored it with this:
    #!/bin/sh
    # To untar, use:
    # tar -xvpzf /path/to/backup/<date>-backup.tar.gz -C </path/to/root>
    tar -xvpzf /home/chuck/Backups/now.tar.gz -C /
    mkdir /proc \
    /lost+found \
    /sys \
    /mnt \
    /media \
    /mnt/bind/Downloads \
    /mnt/bind/Pictures \
    /mnt/bind/Maintenance \
    /mnt/bind/Music \
    /mnt/bind/Backups
    exit 0
Of course the directories already existed so that part was unnecessary & only needed if I had restored onto a fresh installation.

  • Color Management issues with Illustrator

Can someone help me figure out the color management issues I'm getting when printing on an Epson 3880 from Illustrator?
The image comes out severely red as evident on the face. I'm not getting the same problem when printing from Photoshop, even though I set same paper profile in printing dialog box.
I attached two printed picture (one from Photoshop CC, and one from Illustrator CC) that I took with my iphone so that you can see the printed result.  Even when I try to simulate same thing using illustrator soft proofing process, the soft proof does not show me anything close to how it gets printed out. And I tried all device simulations to see if any would match it. Im using  CMYK SWOP v2 for Color space in both programs.

    Dougfly,
Only an hour wasted? Lucky you. Color is an incredibly complex subject. First, forget matching anything to the small LCD on the back of your camera. That's there as a basic guide and is affected by the internal jpg algorithm of your camera.
2nd, you're not really takeing a color photo with your digital camera, but three separate B&W images in a mosaic pattern, exposed thru separate red, green and blue filters. Actual color doesn't happen until that matrix is demosaiced in either your raw converter, or the in-camera processor (which relies heavily on camera settings, saturation, contrast, mode, etc.)
Having said the above, you can still get very good, predictable results in your workflow. I have a few color management articles on my website that you might find very helpful. Check out the Introduction to Color Management and Monitor and Printer Profiling. In my opinion, a monitor calibration device is the minimum entry fee if you want decent color.
