Lifespan of Request, Session and Context Attributes

I'm studying for the SCWCD exam and am hoping to clarify a few points on the lifespan of attribute objects bound to the various request, session and context web scopes.
Do request attributes persist as long as the request is being handled by some servlet? In other words, once the response is committed are those objects unbound and destroyed?
Similarly, I'm assuming session attributes are unbound and destroyed when the session either times out or is explicitly terminated.
Lastly, for context attributes, which are available to the entire web application, are these simply available
until explicitly removed?
Thanks.

Request: available until the HttpServletRequest object goes out of scope (at the end of the doService or associated methods). The attributes here are basically just stored in a HashMap in that object
Session: available until the session no longer exists, which occurs when the session times out (NOT when the user closes their browser), or when the session is terminated by the server code
Context: Available until the container stops, such as upon a JVM restart
NOTE: Specific objects in all three contexts can be removed and added at any time by the server code

  • Simple Types and Context Attributes

    Hello All,
      Can someone be kind enough to explain the difference between using a context attribute and a Simple Type ? For example... what's the difference (and I am sure there is ) between a context attribute "Name" that is declared to be of String type and a simple type "Name" that is of built-in type String  ?

  • Need help - session and lost attribute...

    Hi,
    We store some attributes in the session. In the web.xml we have session-timeout 20. (it's in minutes). If user use IE 5.5, and is inactive more than 1 minute, and then he send new request from browser (IE 5.5 or 5.0) to application running under oc4j, our attributes is null. (Because, and I don't know why, new session is created)
    In the IE 6.0, Mozila, Netscape it takes 20 minutes - it's exactly what we want.
    Also we try applying SP2, patches on the IE 5.5. and nothing change.
    thaks for any advice
    zajo

    Another info,
    It's happening only in a https protocol (SSL),users which have W98 and IE 5.x, 6,x.

  • Scope and context.. ???

    Hi...
    Can any one clarify me whats the difference between a context and a scope ???
    Ex. whats is difference between pageCOntext and pageScope ?

    From the API: A PageContext instance provides access to all the namespaces associated with a JSP page, provides access to several page attributes, as well as a layer above the implementation details.
    http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/api/javax/servlet/jsp/PageContext.html
    With regards to Servlets/JSP, there are four "scopes" for storing attributes in: page, request, session and application. When talking about a scope normally refers to just ONE of those namespaces.
    People sometimes do use pageContext and pageScope interchangeably because the method call pageContext.setAttribute() sets an attribute into the pageScope. But the pageContext is much more than that.
    Hope I haven't confused you too much

  • How to work with request, response and sessions in JSC

    Hi
    I have two Servlets ServletA and ServletB. ServletA creates a session and add some attributes to this session. Then it forwards the request to ServletB where the attributes of this session are retrieved and used in response object.
    Here is what I am doing in ServletB
    - Get the session attrribute. This attribute is of type byte[]
    byte[] mydata = (byte[]) request.getSession.getAttribute(data);
    response.setContentLength(mydata.length);
    OutputStream stream = response.getOutputStream();
    stream.write(mydata,0,mydata.length);
    stream.close();

    How do I achieve this in Creator. ?

    SrinivasBy "this" do you mean "how do I access a session attribute that has been placed there by another servlet?"
    The base class for all page beans has a bunch of convenience methods available. The simplest one to use for this purpose is getBean(), which searches through request scope, session scope, and application scope for a bean with the name you specify -- and, if its a managed bean, will create it for you as well. So, your code would look like this:
      String data = ...; // Name of the attribute you want
      byte[] mydata = (byte[]) getBean(data);There is an additional quirk related to what you're actually trying to do, though ... it looks like you are trying to write out binary content (perhaps an image loaded from the database or something). It is not possible to mix binary and text output in a single response.
    Your best bet for this particular purpose, then, is to continue using ServletA and ServletB just as you have been. The applications created by Creator are standard servlet-based web applications, so you can use additional servlets and all the other goodies (although you'll have to declare them yourself in the web.xml file, as usual).

  • Maintaining Sessions through Multiple Servlets and Contexts

    Hi,
    I have a webapplication that works like this:
    * User connects to a login servlet on HTTPS
    * Users information is authenticated on HTTPS
    * An object is stored in the session for other servlets to validate the users access
    * Authenticated users are forwarded to an HTTP page where the session is used to make sure they were granted access
    My problem is this....Since I create the session in an HTTPS context, when I am in the HTTP context, I am unable to access the session and constantly get NULL. Is there any way that I can access the session from an HTTP context?

    What you can do is, just login using HTTPS and switch over to HTTP
    and then store data in session.That is true, but what I want in the session is basically a flag on whether or not the user was granted access. I would much rather set all that up on the secure line, and then just access it from the unsecure ones...
    For example, you are creating session using the
    http://testdev:port/index.jsp page.
    If access the same page(with hostname)
    http://10.300.20.18:8080/index.jsp, you can't get the session even
    though both are same web server and same web application. Because the
    browser treats it different sessionI think if you use my above solution with the explicit passing of the jsessionid, you can move from one domain to another and still maintain session. Not positive on that though...

  • Not able to get the context attribute set in ServletContextListener

    Hi all,
    I have written a simple ServletContextListener and set an attribute in it. when i am trying to retrieve the attribute value in my servlet, I am getting as null. Could anybody please let me know about this if i need to add any more changes.

    web.xml
    <web-app>

    </listener>
    <context-param>
    <param-name>testMe</param-name>
    <param-value>TestedSuccessfully</param-value>
    </context-param>
    </web-app>
    ContextListener
    package com.mypackage;
    import javax.servlet.ServletContext;

    ServletContext context = arg0.getServletContext();
    String testApplication = context.getInitParameter("testMe");
    context.setAttribute("myTest", "mkmmkmmkm");

    out.print("The required value is... "+output);
    } catch (IOException e) {
    // TODO Auto-generated catch block
    e.printStackTrace();
    OUTPUT
    When accessed with any url as below:
    http://localhost:8080/helloworld/u
    gettting output as "The required value is... null" . Because i set the context attribute, I am expecting not null. Can anybody suggest me on this.

    context.setAttribute("myTest", "mkmmkmmkm");
    String output = (String) getServletContext().getAttribute("testMe");You set "myTest" but try to get "testMe"

  • How do I get at Session using Context's

    Hi,
    Please can someone help me out. I am working on an extended version of the jboss DatabaseServerLoginModule and part of this involves overidding the login() method. The login() method provides no parameters such as request etc and so I have no way of getting at the session.
    How can I get at the session using Context's?
    i.e. starting with say InitialContext and going from there....
    any ideas?
    Regards,
    Paul.

    Sounds like a JBoss question to me. Seems to me that JBoss support would be the place to go for answers. It's really not a general Java programming question.

  • Using Static Variable against Context Attribute for Holding IWDView

    Dear Friends,
    I have a method which is in another DC which has a parameter of the type IWDView. In my view, I will have an action which will call the method in another component by passing the value for the view parameter. Here, I can achieve this in 2 types. One is - I declare a static variable and assign the wdDoModifyView's view as parameter value and I can pass this variable as parameter whenever calling that method or the second way - create an attribute and assign the same wdDoModifyView's view parameter as its value. Whenever I call this method, I can pass this attribute as parameter. What is the difference between these two types of holding the value since I am storing the same value i.e., wdDoModifyView's view parameter. But when I trigger the action from different user sessions, the first type of code (using static variable) prints the same value in both the sessions for view.hashCode() and View.toString(), but the same is printing the different values when I pass the attribute which holds the view parameter.
    Clarification on this is highly appreciated
    The problem I face is when I use static variable to get the view instance and export the data using the UI element's id, the data belonging to different user sessions is mixed up where as when I use Context Attribute, the same problem doesn't arise. I want to know the reason why it is so. Is there any other place or way where I can get the current view instance of each session instead of wdDoModifyView?

    Hi Sujai ,
    As you have specified the problem that we face when we use  static attributes, when end users are using the application .
    Static means i  have n number of objects but the static variable value will remain same every where.
    when it is context attribute for every object i.e nth object you have a nth context attribute i mean nth copy of the context attribute.
    so every user has a unique Iview parameter , when context is used and
    when static is used  , assume you have userA , his iview is set this intially  and u have another user B , when he is using  , since the variable is static and when you access this variable you will get the value of userA.

  • File and boolean attribute on item

    Hi,
    I work with Oracle9iAS Portal PL/SQL API (9.0.2.6).
    I define an item type (CAID = 213/ ID = 37399) with several attributes. When I try to create/modify an item I have problems with boolean attributes and file attributes.
    In case of boolean attributes, I'm not able to set the value to true. I try with several values (IS_ON, True, 1) but the attribute is still set to false. Is there anything wrong with the value I assign to the attribute before creating the item ? When I try to create the item and then modifying the attribute, the value stay to false.
    For the file attributes, I use the upload_blob function inside wwsbr_api and the file appear in the wwdoc_document table. I set the file attribute value with the return value of the upload_blob function.
    When I call the add_item_post_upload, an error occurs (ORA-29532: Java call terminated by uncaught Java exception: java.lang.NullPointerException : -29532)
    Is this a bug or not ?

    Hi Eddy:
    On Friday, we put in a TAR with Oracle support about the identical problem. When editing an item using the API, the boolean attributes always reset. The values of the boolean attributes aren't even being changed. The only reason we need to set them again is the limitation of the API where you have to feed all attributes back in.
    So far, Oracle has said it sounds like a bug and they want to know the exact sequence of steps to repeat it.

  • Web session and authentification session pb with wl6.0

    Hi,
    I am evaluating weblogic 6.0 on windows 2000.
    I have a little web application, with some URL (html, servlet...), I want to protect.
    So I defined a <security-constraint> element in my web.xml
    file, and I binded the logical roles with real participant in
    weblogic.xml
    It works very well at startup. I launch a browser, request a protected URL and the
    authentification window popup. I enter valid info and I can access my URL.
    Perfect.
    Now I want to give the possibility to my user to terminate a session, to disconmect,
    so I had a button, (disconnect) which invoque a servlet which get the current session
    and invalidate it.
    I checked, the session is destroyed and a new one is defined (new ID, new counter...),
    but my user are still connected. It means that if I want to acces a protected URL,
    I still can do it.
    more strange. In both a secured and unsecured page I print the User Principal. When
    I connect, the two pages print the same and right value.
    But if I disconnect, the unsecured page print null(no connection for this session)
    and the secured page print the principal I used to connect in the previous message.
    I know this message is a little bit long, but I tried to give the cleares context.
    Has anyone ancountered that kind of problem? Is there a solution.
    I pass the test with netscape 4.76, netscape 6.01, Internet Explorer 5.50. I got
    the same behavior each time...
    Thanks
    Nicolas

    If you use a Form to authenticate then the browser is unaware of the
    username and password. The PetStore demonstrates how it's done in

    Hi John,
    thank you for your answer. It confirmed my first guess, that the
    browser keep the secret info and send them back to the server.
    The server does not make any attachment with the current session.
    But you talk about a "ServletAuthentication" example which presents theway to bind
    the login info in the session. I have not found this servlet, in weblogic6.0 distribution
    or J2EE API.
    Can you give me the exact reference of this servlet.
    Thank you for your help.

    Nicolas,
    It is my understanding that the authentication information for this
    scenario
    (ie HTTP BASIC authentication) is not contained in the session -- it is
    maintained by the browser and resent with every request. That is why
    invalidating the session makes no difference. If you have a HTTPsnooping
    utility you will see the "Authorization" information (albeit encodedusing
    BASE64) present in the requests from your browser to the server.
    FYI: I've noticed that by using the ServletAuthentication class tomanually
    perform authentication, it DOES in fact store the authentication info in
    the
    session. There is a "done()" method in this class which removes thisinfo
    from the session (ie performs a logout).
    If this link reproduces properly, check it out -- it's a good simple

  • Validation of context attributes with adaptive webservice model

    Hi, I am creating a Web Dynpro Java application (on top of Netweaver AS 7.0) using an adaptive webservice model to invoke a webservice.
    The webservice has some request attributes of type string with limited length (for example limited to 1 character). I bound the model to component controller context and created a mapping between the component controller context and view context. In the view, I created a form which is bound to the context attributes.
    When user enters string values, which are longer than the maximum length specified in webservice WSDL, and submits the form, an exception is thrown when Web Dynpro runtime is trying to assign entered values into context attributes:
    com.sap.dictionary.runtime.DdCheckException: Length of character string "abcdef" must be smaller than or same as MaxLength 1;
        at com.sap.dictionary.runtime.DdTypeString.checkValid(DdTypeString.java:195)
        at com.sap.tc.webdynpro.model.webservice.base.model.BaseGenericModelClass.setAttributeValue(BaseGenericModelClass.java:304)

        at at.gov.bmf.demo.comp.employee.wdp.IPublicEmployeeDemo$IOrganizationalAssignmentElement.wdSetObject(IPublicEmployeeDemo.java:1552)
        ... 32 more
    This exception is thrown before my non-validating action is executed, so I am not able to prevent it or handle it.
    Is there any way how to catch this exception or prevent it?
    Does anyone know where these model restrictions are stored? I searched the XML files generated for the model, but I haven't found anything. Does the Web Dynpro runtime access WSDL everytime it needs to validate request parameters?
    Thanks,
    Tomas

    No ,This is the preferred and safer way to separate the Model Node and and Input Node and relationship between them by using mapping.
    You create your context structure for input and then on action set user input to model data.
    Safer it means  : Sometimes it happen that model data not populated properly due to network or wrong user input etc ,this time our presentation will be safe and display the proper error message rather the screen went away with null pointer exception.
    Regarding your - it require a lot of work. It too much convince for us that rather than writing 50 lines of code
    for only input length validation WebDynpro provides us a better model driven solution.

  • Crashes during a session and also photos disappear from page and also in Face Book

    No more information other than photos or pictures disappear from any website page including when using Face Book. Also noticed that even Google Logo above search box disappears including the green arrow for returning to previous page or next page. Firefox also crashes during sessions and a widow message appears advising of the crash and requesting to send this on so the problem can be fixed. I have sent this crash report on numerous occasions but have not had any responses yet and the problem continues. Sometimes it works fine for a few days and then down it goes with same issues as mentioned above.

    It is possible that you clicked "Block Images" in the right-click context menu while saving an image.
    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Images_or_animations_do_not_load
    You can use these steps to check if images are blocked:
    * Open the web page that has the images missing in a browser tab.
    * Click the favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
    * Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
    * Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
    * Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
    * If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • Question regarding IWDTree and context Value Node naming

    Hi,
    I have a question regarding the IWDTree / IWDTreeNodeType components.
    I have a context looking like this:
    Context
      + ResponseNode
        + PersonNode (1..1)
          + PersonAddressNode                    (empty node, placeholder)
          | + AdresNode (0..n)
          + PersonChildNode                      (empty node, placeholder)
          | + PersonNode (0..n)
          |   + PersonAddressNode                (empty node, placeholder)
          |     + AddressNode (0..n)
          + PersonParentsNode                    (empty node, placeholder)
            + PersonNode (0..n)
              + PersonAddressNode                (empty node, placeholder)
                + AddressNode (0..n)
    The context represents a person, a person's address, and a person's children and parents with their respective addresses.
    As a result, on different branches, a PersonNode and AddressNode can appear.
    And for some strange reason, all PersonNodes and AddressNodes link to the same ResponseNode.PersonNode.PersonParentsNode.PersonNode and ResponseNode.PersonNode.PersonParentsNode.PersonNode.PersonAddressNode.AddressNode respectively, irregardless of their branch...
    Is it illegal to have multiple PersonNode and AddressNode node names, and should they be named uniquely?

    Generally, node names need to be unique inside the context, attributes in different nodes can have same names. I wonder if the context structure you described will result in code without compile errors.
    The WD Tree can only be used with recursive context nodes or with a hierarchy of non-singleton child nodes.
    Can you give an example how your tree should look like at runtime?
