Lightroom 2.5 intermittent hangs

I'm a heavy Lightroom user, and I have never seen this problem with previous releases of Lightroom or Mac OS X. In the midst of viewing (not editing) images, the normally responsive LR 2.5 occasionally hangs for as long as five minutes at a time, then resumes as if nothing went wrong. The rest of my system runs fine during the hang, and LR is using only about 2% CPU. No disk activity either. The problem happens randomly -- it is not related to specific image(s).
Mac Pro, latest version of Snow Leopard, 4 GB memory, dual-core Intel Xeon, 2.66 GHz
LR 2.5, latest ACR, running in 32-bit mode
Images: Nikon D300 raw mode
Graphics: RadeonX1900
Can anyone shed light on this?
This is what the call graph looks like when I sample Lightroom during the hang:

Could you tell me how you produced your call graph?
I am trying to get my Lightroom working again (post Snow Leopard upgrade). and perhaps this will shed some light (npi) on my problem.

details:
Removing the previews, lrdata file did NOT resolve the problem for me btw.
Lightroom (2.5) worked fine for me before upgrading to Snow Leopard. Since then, no joy.
I have tried re-installing the 2.5 update.
I have tried toggling the 32-bit 64-bit checkbox.
I have tried removing any and all plugins (e.g., LRG) from relevent folders.
Lightroom just goes into an "application not responding" mode and doesn't even bother to show me a blank screen.
Note that it *does* have time to ask me to back up my catalogues.
And it does have time to touch the "Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat" file.
And a process listing (top or ps) does show the process (ps shows 0 cpu and 0 memory usage). Telling LR to do a backup doesn't succeed (nothing shows up newly in  the folder where the older backups are).
Beurk. :-(
Anyone have any suggestions to get my Lightroom working again?

  • Intermittent hangs -- not sure how to diagnose

I've been having a problem with intermittent hangs on my black Macbook 2.2 C2D for over a month now, and they seem to be getting more frequent. I've experienced the following symptoms:
    - Beachball for up to several minutes
    - Sometimes the system recovers, and sometimes it does not.
    - When the system recovers, I see "INSERT-HANG-DETECTED" messages in system.log
    - When the system does not recover, it usually ends in a complete freeze, even the mouse cursor does not respond. The fan spins up.
    - If I use an already-open terminal during the beachball, I can navigate directories but running "ls" shows no files, anywhere. Attempting to open a Finder window can lead to the complete freeze situation or can show some, but not all, files in a directory. Attempting to run commands like "top" gives an "Operation not permitted" error.
    - During the beachball, I cannot launch other applications or shut down the machine, but spaces/expose hot corners still work and the dock responds to mouse-over by resizing as appropriate.
This seems to happen more frequently when using the machine after waking it from sleep than after booting it.
I have also experienced a hang during boot, and a few failures to wake from sleep that could be related.
    Here's what I've tried:
    - Apple hardware test (full test)
    - Overnight run of MemTest86+
    - Disk Utility verify from OS install disk
    - SMARTmontools extended test
Nothing has come up with any errors.
It feels to me like a disk access problem but I'm not convinced the problem is with the disk itself given I've never detected any filesystem or SMART errors.
I reformatted the HD and did a complete clean install of 10.6 last night and am still seeing the hangs, so I believe it's a hardware problem. But, I have no idea what steps to take next in order to diagnose it. The machine is not under warranty or AppleCare, and I'd rather not hand it over to an Apple store to disassemble and play "swap the part" if I can avoid it.
Any pointers as to what I should try next, or what the problem might be?

Update: I ran off the clone for a couple of days, sleeping and waking the machine often, and letting it sleep overnight and through a full workday. With my normal usage patterns I didn't see any of the freezes or other symptoms, no INSERT-HANG-DETECTED messages in the system log.
Last night I ran a disk surface scan with the Drive Genius demo and found 1 bad block. I reformatted the drive and did a zero erase of free space, and then another surface scan which found no bad blocks.
Then, I left the machine on overnight restoring my TM backup onto the internal drive. On my first boot, I got 3 INSERT-HANG-DETECTED messages and a freeze.
I haven't pulled the memory, but I feel like Memtest would've found memory errors, and the good experience booting from the external points to either a bad drive or a bad drive controller to me. I've been running it now for a few hours and haven't had any hangs, so I'm not sure what to think. It's possible it could've "fixed itself" by identifying any new bad sectors I guess but I should probably just replace the drive.

  • Lightroom mobile sync "hangs" - I am trying to sync several small LR collections from my desktop computer.  The first collection syncs, and then Lightroom syncing seems to hang.  It shows "Syncing 150 photos" in top left, but never progresses even after c

I am using Lightroom 5.5 on OS X.  I have created several small collections with about 180 images and I am trying to sync them via Lightroom mobile for later iPad access.  The first collection syncs properly, and then Lightroom syncing seems to hang.  The label in the upper right shows "Syncing 150 photos" but does not count down.  Opening and closing LR does not restart the process.

    PROBLEM STILL EXISTS...
I spoke to soon!  I tried adding a couple of more collections to sync.  Lightroom shows "Syncing 814" photos on upper left, but never apparently syncs any.  If I exit Lightroom it notifies me there are 814 images to sync.  When I reopen it seems to pick up and stall where it left off.  These new collections are not posting - this is the same problem as before.
I am pretty sure there is a serious bug in Lightroom here.  I encourage support to contact me.

  • FXO to Bogen pager- fxo ports intermittently hang

I am working on a problem where an VIC2-4FXO voice port which connects to a Bogen UTC1 paging system intermittently hangs. A shut/no shut of the port clears the problem. Problem occurs approximately once a week. Polarity is correct on the connection between the FXO and Bogen. Trunk is setup as loopstart. Router voice port config only has default "timing hookflash-out 50".
I found a Bogen doc on the net but it didn't elude to what type of supervisory disconnect it used. I do not know whether the voice port shows off-hook or not when it hangs as I just got called into the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Thanks, Mike.

    Try:
    (1) Manually recover the voice-port port by setting the proper signal groundStart signaling and re-register the analog FXSGS endpoint to CCM.
    (2) Do not use the ccm-manager config feature.
    (3) If ccm-manager config must be used for other endpoints on the same GW, set the analog FXSGS voice-ports up as H.323 ports.

  • Lightroom 5.4 backup hangs upon finish, relaunches new dialog box

Is this a bug? I have a recurring Lightroom 5.4 issue on quitting. I have it set up to backup catalog every week upon exit. When the time comes each week, the backup proceeds, but doesn't end -- it just hangs while a new, second dialog box asking to backup once again appears. Lightroom will not quit until i click on this new dialog box -- this happens each time I backup, no matter what my settings change to. Is it backing up twice, or once, or not at all? Why do I have to be present in order for the backup to actually finish? Please help!
Here's a screenshot. Note the new, second dialog box at bottom. Thank you!!

  • Lightroom 5.7 import hangs up

I have Lightroom 5.7 running on a PC, 8.1 Windows op system.  Lightroom 5 opens and I can get to the library but when I try and import more pictures for a new collection, it hangs up and I get a message: "Adobe Photoshop Lightoom 64 has stopped working. A problem caused teh program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."  I never hear back (of course) from Windows or Microsoft.  Would it help to eliminate all the other collections I have on Lightroom?  It seems to be happening more and more that Import hangs up and won't operate.  It is longer than just the pause while it looks for sources on my several external drives.  Thank you!

    Possibility #1: http://members.lightroomqueen.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1137/188/how-do-i- change-my-monitor-profile-to-check-whether-its-corrupted
Possibility #2: you need to delete your preview cache, this is a folder whose name end with Previews.LRDATA. Do not delete the .LRCAT file in the same folder.

  • When exporting many videos with Lightroom 5, the process hangs randomly and needs to be restarted.

When exporting few videos, the process hangs randomly. The processor performance is 0 % and the lightroom says it is working (actually it is not). I have to quit lightroom, kill all processes like amecommand.exe, Adobe Media Core, Adobe Dynamic Link Manager and restart the process. It stops randomly.
I am exporting ALL-I videos from Canon 5D mark  III, into H264, high quality.
PS: The same situation was with Lightroom 4.

    Hello,
i have the same problem on LR5.5 on Win 7 (8G RAM)
    Thank you for any help.

  • Lightroom launches then immediately hangs

Lightroom 3 succesfully loaded and succesfully used for past couple of wmonths. When launched last week the library page appeared just as I had left it but suddenly went'semi-transparent' and the machine hung. The error message was " Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 64 bit has stopped working and windows is checking for a solution to the problem" No such solution is forthcoming. Have loaded version 3.2 with the same result. Loaded L3 onto my laptop and run in 32 bit and it works perfectly. Only software that might have been loaded between sessions was a HP printer driver which has since been uninstalled. Assistance very much appreciated. Aldso had initial problems with Adobe Premiere on the same computer but in those instances the programme could be re-starteed after re-booting the machine. That problem has now gone away.

    Hi Dorin,
Thanks for response. Pref files deleted: still hangs. Created 2nd. catalog as you suggest but still hangs when that opened. Cannot now get opportunity to create another catalog via Ctrl+open software. Any other ideas? Should I just try and get a copy of lightroom 2?
    Regards,
    Keith

  • Intermittent hang with CF10, apache 2.2, RHEL6

    Hello -
We recently purchased four ColdFusion 10 Enterprise Licenses to refresh our production webservers.  We are currently testing our buildout, and one of the two initial servers has been giving us intermittent issues.  It seems that occasionally apache hands off the request to the coldfusion back end, but it never receives a response from the CF service, and the connection just hangs in a "W" Sending Reply state, with no obvious timeout.  I do not see any active threads in the coldfusion Server Monitor.  I see connections on the Apache server-status page that have been in the same state for 54,000 seconds and counting.  The end result is that the browser just hangs waiting for a response, but never timing out.  We estimate between 1% and 2% of all requests wind up in this hung state.
We have ensured that the /etc/hosts and /etc/resolve.conf files are correct.  I see no obvious errors in with the apache logs or coldfusion logs.
    Details:
    Coldfusion 10 Enterprise
    Apache 2.2.15
    RedHat Enterprise Linux 6.5 - 64 bit
    MySQL 5.6.19
Roughly 200 virtual hosts, each with a duplicate JkMountFile "/opt/coldfusion10/config/wsconfig/1/uriworkermap.properties"
Any help troubleshooting this installation would be greatly appreciated.

The problem was related to the well documented issue regarding the randomizer CF10 uses.   We had a large number or cfhttp calls, and each one requires calling /dev/urandom to generate a random number.  The default randomizer requires about 5 seconds of CPU time to gather enough entropy to create a truly unique random number.  Unfortunately this delay compounds upon itself as you get more and more calls.  If you have 100 concurrent cfhttp calls, requests would take 500 seconds.
The fix is editing the jvm.config to: -Djava.security.egd=file:/dev/./urandom”.
The default /dev/urandom is overridden / mapped to /dev/random, which causes the delay.  Editing the jvm.config exactly as above will supersede the mapping.

  • Java.sql functions intermittently hanging for 60 seconds

I have an Oracle 8.1.6 application on Solaris with Tomcat 3.1 using JDBC to talk to the database. I am using the thin driver for JDK 1.2.2. I moved a box from development to production and changed the network information in the database and in Solaris. Now I have strange behavior where about 5% of the time functions such as Connection.prepareStatement, ResultSet.close, and PreparedStatement.close will sleep for 60 seconds. Then they proceed as normal. It is always 60 seconds, never a hard deadlock. The application is multithreaded, being inside Tomcat and all. The other strange behavior is that when another thread accesses the database, the first thread that was sleeping will wake up and proceed as normal. I will try to switch to the OCI driver, but I think it is very strange that the thread hangs for exactly 60 seconds inside the calls to the JDBC driver. The other 95% of the time it works great.

We switched the driver to OCI instead of thin. It looks like it is working OK now. I suppose it was some strange behavior in the thin driver.

  • Lightroom 4.3 suddenly hangs-up

Importing Canon RAW files,  "copy as DNG", Lightroom 4.3 creates the DNG files (I can see them using Windows Explorer) but never adds the files to the Catalog, even after waiting over night.
Also tried opening a new catalog.  It also exhibits the same behavior, So possibly something is wrong with the RAW files; but, they open just fine usiig Photoshop Elements 10 which also opens the DNG files hat Lightroom created.

Well, after several retries of getting the LR installer to work, it suddenly just worked.  LR3 is working in Win 8 for me now.  All I need is for Epson to finally release Win 8 drivers for the R1900.

  • Lightroom 4.3 installer hangs in Win 8

I'm having no luck at all installing Adobe products in Win 8 64-bit.  I downloaded LR 4.3 and tried to install it.  The Photoshop Lightroom 4.3 Installer window opens with "Preparing files," and says that the downloaded files are being extracted.  According to the progress bar, nothing is being extracted, and it just sits there doing nothing.  I have another message here describing how the CS6 installer will not initialize on this computer. Could these be related?  Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Quicksilver intermittently hangs before startup -- any suggestions?

My Dual 1ghz G4 Quicksilver has begun occasionally failing to start up recently. I'll press the power button, it'll light up, things start whirring inside, then it'll blink three times quickly and hang there. No chime and nothing but black on the screen. I'll hold the power button for 5 seconds to shut down and usually after 3 or 4 repeats of this cycle it'll 'catch' and start up properly, after which it'll run just fine.
I tried zapping the PRAM a few times, but doesn't seem to help. Since it hangs so early I'm thinking it's probably not software related, and the install of the system is quite fresh anyway. The hard drive has shown no other signs of being on the way out. I'm wondering if this is a known issue that any of the whizzes here had heard of before I take any more drastic measures. Thanks!

  • Intermittent hangs in Windows Explorer

    Hi,
I use version 5.0.01.0600 of the VPN Client. When I'm connected Windows Explorer hangs for a couple of seconds and then works fine for a couple of seconds and then hangs for a couple of seconds, etc. When logged on in Windows XP with a user with administrator rights this problem doesn't occur. Only when logged on with a Restricted user (Users Group) does this problem occur.
    Hoping you can help,
    Jeroen

I think this is a know issue with version 5.0.01.0600 of the VPN Client and there is no workaround for this issue as far as i know.A bug has been filed for this issue in the past.We are working on this issue.

  • Lightroom Menu 1.1 hangs

While I have been using V 1.1 for a while now, only recently the menu button i. e. File Edit Develop Photo etc, have become irresponsive. When you try to open them the program freezes or hangs up for minutes before the menu briefly pops up and disappear again.
    Anybody else has seen this?
    Thank you
    Enrico

According to one researcher/PhD candidate/successful about 50% of all computer errors are hardware related. Unfortunately, those errors are capable of causing disk errors in the code for any program. Esp on that does lots of read/writes such as LR.
That can lead to a sudden problem with LR. And then there are the situation where LR "asks" for a card reader connection. It should of course "forget it" if the request is not answered in a few seconds. Instead it seems to wait. The OS should also "time out" the response back from the card reader and tell LR it is a no go. Whose problem is this? Possibly both. Also it doesn't seem to be a problem on all computers. Why, who knows.
Finally in XP applications, the old bugaboo of order of load seems to show up in certain circumstances.
So, just because one's hardware runs pretty well, doesn't mean that you don't have problems. Since I don't seem to have any of those problems, I am assuming my hardware is working well now. Maybe not in the future. I am on the alert.
