Link to files in iWeb

Newbie to iWeb! I have created a site in iWeb, and want to create links to pages (.htm) generated by another program (Reunion). When I try to create the links I can't get iWeb to bring up the "linked" page. I've tried using link to file (clearly wrong) and link to external page, without success. If this should be possible in iweb, how to do it please? Where should my "external" pages be located?
Thanks.

Where should my "external" pages be located?
Welcome to the discussions. They should be published to a server. "External page" is the option to use. ...Does the URL you're trying to enter into iWeb's Link inspector work if you enter it into a browser's address bar? ...If not, it's not going to work in iWeb either.
Did you check the "Make hyperlinks active" box? If you do that, you should be able to click on the hyperlinked element and go to that page. If you haven't checked that box, the hyperlinked element won't become active until you've published the page and clicked on the element in a browser.

  • Link to files not created in iWeb?

I tried some of iWeb yesterday, I don't have a .mac, so I publish to a folder, but it seems it can only inter-connect pages created in itself only.
Say I want to add a link to a pdf file for downloading on my page, I can't find where should I put the pdf file.
I tried to publish to a folder first, then put the pdf file in the folder just created by iWeb, then make a link to the pdf file in iWeb. But if publish again, iWeb will remove anything not created by iWeb from the folder, so the pdf file I just put in disappears.
Does anybody how to solve this problem?
and btw, how do I myself manage the folder structure when publishing, I don't like iWeb put everything in one folder.
    Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

First upload your PDF file to the remote server you'll ftp iWeb's published folder to, then use the file's remote address in iWeb's Link Inspector.

  • PDF files in iWeb

How can you put PDF files into iWeb so people can download and print them. (I am a teacher and want my students to be able to download my notes.)
    Thanks for your help!

In general, you can hyperlink a file by setting it up in iWeb Inspector's Link tab as "Link To: A File. The following video tutorial shows an example of a PDF document being linked for downloading, but it can alternatively be an MP3 or other file:
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/web/iweb08.html#tutorial=nav
Note that you won't be able to test the hyperlink in iWeb itself — only after publishing will you be able to test the hyperlink in a browser.
A PDF hyperlinked in iWeb as "A File" will open in the current browser window/tab. At the bottom of this test page (not mine) there are a couple of text links to PDFs — click on them and see what happens...
    http://web.me.com/toad.hall/Demo_1/LinkTestPage.html
...In Safari 3, you can move the cursor to the bottom of the PDF page to display a small black control window.

  • How to embed Windows video files in iweb

I uploaded several videos to a web site using iweb for a fortune 500 company only to find out the wmv videos I put in didn't load because iweb uses a quicktime container for all videos dropped on the page. After spending a lot of time on this site (how to link video files, embeding google/youtube video) I finally came across another site that was very help. If you interested here it is:
    Home page: http://www.mediacollege.com/
    Embedded wmv files: http://www.mediacollege.com/video/format/windows-media/streaming/
Just drop in the html code and change the file names and location.
I'm new to mac and this discussion board has been very helpful. I hope Apple includes a way to embed windows file. There are too many PCs out there to ignore.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I choose to ignore Windows use until I need to fire up my PC. I don't create files for WMP format, either.
You are leaving out some import "steps" when you say "drop in the html code" because this requires post-publishing edits with a plain text editor.
And the code shown is now out of date as Microsoft "change the rules" (again) for ActiveX content.
This page code would generate an ActiveX alert dialog asking the viewer what to do. Many viewers just click "No" and move on.

  • Adding files to iWeb site using .mac

    Hi
Apologies if this has been answered before but I would like to achieve the following:
I have an iWeb site published to a .mac account. I would like to add links to other files such as m3u or qtl playlists and host the mp3/mov files somewhere else in my .mac account. I have read a little about using the idisk feature to achieve this. What's the best way of proceeding?

which means you have to put any file or folder linked to in this way inside iDisk>Web>Sites??
    That's correct.
Presumably that means when you publish any updates out of iWeb it leaves these files/folders alone and only updates what it needs to?
You can create folders as you like.
Just make sure you do not add a Site in iWeb with the same name as your folder. iWeb will overwrite that folder. Try it.
And do not add an index.html file of your own in the root of the Server. I have a custom index.html file. So any time I publish a Site in iWeb (by mistake) I have to make sure I replace the index.html file by iWeb with the file of my own.
But I do a lot of things I'm not supposed to do.

  • Link to file on iDisk??

My husband's new .mac website has a link to a 97 MB pdf full of photos. It kept failing to upload when we linked to it in iWeb and uploaded the iWeb site---the pages would all load, but not the pdf despite hours of spinning beachballs.
As a workaround, I used my computer's faster connexion to upload the pdf to the Public Folder of his iDisk. That worked, the pdf is there. But now, how do we put a link to it in the iWeb site?
I tried dragging the icon from the online iDisk window onto the iWeb page, and an anonymous white square did appear but it doesn't seem to be a link to anything, although I suppose to be absolutely sure of that I'd have to upload the site again and test it. I did open the Inspector>Link in iWeb while the little white square was selected, and it did not have the link box checked. If I check the link box in the Inspector, of course I get the dialog asking me to locate what it is we want to link to.
I tried control-clicking on the icon in the iDisk window to see if it would give me some sort of url but no.

You can also use the original Homepage style URL for files in your Public (or Music and Movies) folders.
Instead of the idisk.mac.com style you would use homepage.mac.com
The syntax requires a period (.) and a capital P for public.
    An example:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.qtl
Using the Public folder makes a great way to email just links to files. The also automatically update in any FileSharing.html file used by HomePage.
Upload once and use in dozens of places or pages.

  • How to show a multi-page PDF file on iweb?

    Hi everyone,
I'm building a website where I am showing a catalog design I did for my previous company. It was designed using Indesign and exported into PDF file. Then I saved the first page as JPEG file, inserted the JPEG file into iweb, and then enabled the JPEG image as a link to the PDF file of the catalog. I thought by this way I can let future employers to download the PDF file and view my design work. However I figured if I put my website link on places like Monster.com, anybody can see it, download it, and just steal or print out my work. I realized this is not a right way to do since my previous company should have the right of the design work. Any suggestions? Is there anyway I can let viewers only view the PDF file on the web browser without being able to download it? How should I do to display the whole catalog in a neat wey using iweb? Thank you very much in advance!!

James I know you meant no harm, and I have to say if
it wasn't for you I wouldn't be this far in the game.
So if I have javascript on my website and your
company has javascript disabled, my site wouldn't be
very interesting to you on your work computer? What
is the benefit of disabling javascript?
Thanks. I'm glad I didn't cause any bad feelings.
My company is very paranoid when it comes to IT. I guess it's the common PC world where you are once bitten, twice shy. We just upgraded all of computers to Windows 2000 !!! haha.
I think there must be (or must have been at one time) some vulnerability associated with javascripts on websites and that's why it's disabled. Crazy, isn't it?

  • How do I connect a hyperlink to a Word file in iWeb sucessfully?

I just started using iweb and I know how to use the Inspector to connect to the file to the link, but it won't open the file when I click on the link. Please help. When I connect to one of my own pages the link works.

    NiA:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How are you going about it? Here's how I linked a work file and the like open the document like it would a pdf file in Safari:
    1 - Create the text.
2 - Select all of the text and go to the Link pane in the Inspector window.
3 - Select the link to file option and then navigate to the Word document and select it.
    4 - Publish.
That will open it in another window. See the link Wind in the Willows at the bottom of in this page. The link on the left has the text itself as the link and the link on the right, as indicated has the text box set up as the link. Each gives a different appearance. With the text box method you can change the color of the link to something other that the default for that theme.
    Do you Twango?

  • Flash files in iWeb - Thanks

While it's been possible to place flash files in iWeb with workarounds in the past it's now easy with the new version. The HTML snippet feature has saved the day, Thanks Apple! I can hardly imagine the net without Flash.
To see an example go here:
    http://web.mac.com/catucker/InsideOutside/Alternatives.html

Like ive said in this topic, i need to know where Altartifact put his files in his iDisk, too.
Ive tried all that i know, location in the Web folder, site folder, "my website" folder... Link with "../", with .//"... xD
theres is my code, any idea ?
    <object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#v ersion=7,0,19,0" width="611" height="511" title="flash_accueil">
    <param name="movie" value="WHEREIS_MY_FILE??" />
    <param name="quality" value="high" />
    <embed src="WHEREIS_MY_FILE??" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="611" height="511"></embed>
    </object>
Maybe there is an error in this... because ive tried to use it with a FTP server, and the ".swf" animation is "not charged"... and its in the main page files folder !
I cant understand... this code was working with iWeb Enhancer... :/

  • Linking photo page to iweb?

Can we add an alias to our photo page which will link us to our iweb?
I love my photo page, bring back the feature.

You can do it by adding an HTML link to your photo page file that points to the iWeb primary file. It would be something link this:
    YYYYYY where
XXXXXX is the url of your iWeb page (enclosed in the quote marks) and the YYYYYY is the active text for the link. Remove space following each "<"http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/OT1.png">

  • Can't open my domain files with iweb??

I have a new Hard drive version 10.5.8. I have my old website files but iweb (3.0.3) will not open them. I've tried a few suggestions but nothing works. iweb just keeps prompting me to start a new site???

For opening your domain file or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
Use the iWeb Switch Domain application to open those various domain.sites files to see which one actually contains your web site. Once you've found the right domain file delete the others.

  • Links to files opens blank page

    Hey,
I have links on my iWeb page to zip files on a server. When I click the link, the file begins to download as I want, but in order of the download to happen, a blank page is opened before the download occurs.
Is there a way to trigger the download without having to open a blank page?
    Thanks,
    Wes

Old Toad, I'm sorry but I can't give out the link since the download links contain resource materials for my book that hasn't been officially released and I can't give out the link to the resource page. However, I have tried to download the files on other test computers and the blank window is opening with safari on each computer. Also at second glance, I noticed that a blank window is opening with Firefox as well, only its getting closed immediately and the download window appears. I didn't notice that at first.
I am wondering if perhaps I have the link set to open a new window in iWeb as Roddy mentioned above. I'll have to check that when I get home. What should I choose for the option in iWeb to open the link so that only the download window appears?
    Thanks,
    Wes

  • Disapearing files from iWeb

    hi
recently i upgraded my copy of iWeb 08 to the latest version via the software updater, uploaded into my .mac account website was by commercially used site found here ( www.hypnomuzzy.co.uk )
before i upgraded from 06 to 08, i have a previous site in the program that disapeared after i upgraded, this didnt matter to much to me, as i wasnt really using it, however, my current site i use quite alot, but after upgrading, the entire website has disapered, and replacing it was the old site which i thought i lost. Now, i dont care at all about the old site, but i REALLY would like my current one back, because as it stands, i cant add new content,
any help would be greatly appreciated as i dont want to redo the whole site

yes, i did try looking in spotlight but alas, no luck.
Thanks for the link, it confirms was i suspected - I too had copies of the web site and the files, but iWeb uses a nonstandard method of constructing web sites, and there is nothing in the menu that allows you to back up easily. How was I too know in advance that the only way to save a week's work was to make a copy of a file in my library, where I don't often venture (and I've been using Macs for over ten years)
The whole thing really took me by surprise and I've just spent the best part of 24 hours rebuilding the site from scratch. I was lucky that I only had one working site!
As they say in the macfixt.com, "You have to reconstruct the pages in iWeb, which is tedious and time consuming. Destroying people's work like this with a program upgrade is simply unforgivable. It's just one more example of how Apple seems to losing its grip on quality control. Steve has taken his eye off the ball and his customers are paying the price for his negligence. If he keeps this up he's going to drive the company over a cliff, destroying what he's spent the last ten years rebuilding."

  • Display data from CSV file in iWeb page

    Hi,
I like to display data from a CSV file in iWeb page if a date value from CSV file matches todays value from the system. Here is an example.
    CSV data values
    01/20/2011,Sunny,87
    01/21/2011,Cloudy,100
    01/22/2011,Rainy,60
If today's date value is 01/21/2011 the page should display 01/21/2011 Cloudy 100 in a tabular format.
Appreciate your help in providing HTML code for this issue.
    Thanks

I suspect there is a soft return in the excel database somewhere that can't be seen. Take the csv/txt file into notepad and look for a line that starts oddly compared to the others.
I haven't had luck removing soft returns from excel files so I do this a rather odd way. I take the excel file into InDesign as a table, and then use find/change to replace any soft returns with nothing, then convert the text to table and then export the text out again by going export, and selecting text from the dropdown menu.
For my money, I always save tab delimited text files from excel so that if a field does contain commas, it doesn't "trick" indesign into thinking a new field is beginning or not... instead the field delimiters are tabs and they are unlikely to have been used in the excel database.
If you do choose to use this indesign import method of mine to clean up the database, i also noticed two things in your screengrab: first was that some fields have spaces at the start of the text... easy enough to fix with a GREP that looks for ^\s (start of a sentence followed by a space) and replace with nothing. The second thing is the T&C field that all entries (at least in the screengrab) all start the same – if all entries in the database start the same, couldn't that line be in the indesign file? Its only a small detail I know.
