Lion Server Smtp set-up

Hello to all,
I have a Lion Server on Macmini, a static ip address, a Filemaker server runing perfectly, but I can't set-up the Lion Server mail smtp server.
1st: is it possible to send email like "[email protected]" (the number beeing the static ip of the server).
2nd: what will be the Incoming Mail Server name?
3rd: what will be the Outgoing smtp Mail Server name?
Thanks a lot for your help.
Bruno

but I can't set-up the Lion Server mail smtp server
Why can't you? Are you saying you don't know how to? or that there's something that's preventing you from setting it up?
1st: is it possible to send email like "[email protected]" (the number beeing the static ip of the server).
Yes, but it's not recommended. You'll need to enclose the IP address in brackets in order for it to work:
bruno@[123.45.67.89]
2nd: what will be the Incoming Mail Server name?
If you take this approach it's irrelevant since you're not using domain-based email, so set it to whatever you like, or the IP address of your server.
3rd: what will be the Outgoing smtp Mail Server name?
What 'Outgoing SMTP Mail Server?
If you're running a mail server without valid DNS (e.g. without your own domain name, and without working reverse DNS, then most other mail servers are going to reject your messages no matter what.
That is, unless you're asking about the client settings...? In which case you'll probably need to set that to the IP address of your ISP's mail server, since most other mail servers are going to reject mail from this server anyway.

  • Use Lion Server to set up security in Web Sharing

Can I use Lion Server to set up security in Web Sharing?
I want a password prompt to appear when someone comes to look at my Web Sharing files.
I have tried to do this manually in Snow Leopard and Lion, and am considering buying Lion Server just for this one purpose.
Does the admin GUI in Lion Server have an option that allows you to set up a password prompt for folks that look at my Web Sharing files?
    THanks.
    mac

    Miracles do happen.
Because I just bought Lion Server, I was able to get a guy from the Apple Server support group on the phone, for a long time, and he helped me set this up using the Server app and the Server Admin app.
Now I have a password prompt on my Web Sharing files.
It's an incredible relief to have this working.
    Thanks for the responses.

  • Can I use Lion server to set-up a WPA2 wireless network in place of an AEBS?

I'm contemplating replacing my Airport Extreme Base Station with my Core i5 Mac mini as the wireless network server, because this will get rid of a "box" (that I can sell!) and reduce power consumption, since my iMac is on all the time as my iTunes media source anyway. At present my AEBS creates a WPA2 LAN network connected in bridge mode to my Billion modem/router, so DHCP serving is performed by the Billion router. I could replace the AEBS with the Mac mini running Lion simply by using internet sharing, but this has low security (WEP) and I understand there are often connection problems when clients awake from sleep. (Furthermore, my Airport Extreme at the back of the house probably wouldn't connect to that WEP network?)
So, I wonder.... If I upgraded to Lion Server (only $49), can I set-up the Mac mini as the WPA2 network host in place of the AEBS? My mini is right next to the AEBS anyway, so it's in a suitable position to distribute the radio signal. As I understand it, the Lion Server software would need to allow the Mac mini to connect to the Billion router via ethernet in bridge mode - just like the AEBs, but I can't find any info that tells me whether this is possible.
Does anyone know if what I want to do is possible? A simple solution may be to turn off the DHCP server functions of my Billion router, letting Lion Server become the DHCP server, but I don't think that's possible. I also don't want to replace the Billion with a simple modem because my Billion router provides VoIP for my home phone (and has done so reliably since 2005).
Of course, if it's all too hard, I'll leave things as they are, because I don't have any need for the other Server functions of Lion Server.
    thanks

I don't know. I'm also looking for the same function because I want to
make my iMac running Lion the router and the firewall of my personnal
wireless network. The key advantage will be to have the firewall, its rules
and its logging on the same server.
What I already know is that turning the Internet sharing on turns a
MacOS X Lion into a DHCP server on the wireless side.

  • Outlook smtp mail lion server

    Hello,
We encounter a problem with Windows XP outlook 2007 clients who want to send e-mail through Lion Server. I can manage to solve  this by editing the file /etc/postfix/main.cf according the following Snowleopard Post:
"In Mac OS X Server v10.6, Postfix is configured to require a fully qualified hostname from SMTP clients. This setting is configurable and the restriction can be removed, however any modification of a security-related setting should be evaluated prior to making the change.
Once you have evaluated the change, you can use the following steps to implement it:
Note: Before proceeding, back up the /etc/postfix/main.cf file as a precaution.
In /etc/postfix/main.cf, locate the smtpd_helo_restrictions setting
Remove "reject_non_fqdn_helo_hostname" from the list of settings.
    Restart the Mail service."
After doing so I can send mail.BUT after some time the "reject_non_fqdn_helo_hostname" line which I have commented to
"#reject_non_fqdn_helo_hostname" is back again in the main.cf as"reject_non_fqdn_helo_hostname" and again it is impossible to send mail...
Some kind of "selfhealing"behavior I guess.
Is there someone who has a simalar problem but a different solution ;-) for this annoying problem
    Thanks in advance

    Hee MacTEKLV,
Thanks for your response, after a while I understood this had to do with the antispam/virus mechnism of OSX server. Finally I stopped virus checking and spam checking and then I also could send mail... Some how the amavis deamon or clamav deamon brought back the original "reject_non_fqdn_helo_hostname" line in main.cf
But I am very interested in your solution. Can you explain please how to do this:
    "making it immutable with chgflags"
Can you post an example how to achieve this
I would like to enable spam- and viruschecking...
    thx

  • Lion Apple Mail resets Outoing Mail Server SMTP to NONE on all iCloud accounts

When I edit accounts in Apple Mail.. sometimes  ALL of my iCloud accounts get their "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) reset from the associated iCloud servers to "NONE".   Which means I have to go to every account and reset them to the proper SMTP iCloud server from the SMTP server list.

Thanks Lanny...tried it...still doesn't work.  Called Apple Support...switched to Tier 2 support person Chris P. Was on the phone with him for 2 hours and 38 minutes...we tried everything under the sun...still can't get to smtp.gmail.com...can't even telnet to it from Mac.  We did network testing too...he thought my router was blocking ports 25, 465 & 587 but the router wasn't. After exhausting every concievable MAC setting, trying a number or solutions, killing the account and re-installing multiple times, his conclusion is that there is a third party software "blocking" the send in gmail...ummmmm...makes no sense to me as everything worked perfectly until I upgraded to OS X. Hence his solution is for me to take my Mac to the Apple Store and have them look at it.  My solution?  Don't use mail on the Mac and keep using Mail on my Windows machine.  I prefer Mac, but I have now spent over the last two days in excess of 10 hours on this problem...it's not supposed to be this difficult. Lesson Learned...if something's working, DON'T goof with it...Apple Mail under Snow Leopard worked perfectly...upgraded to Mt. LION (paid for it) and now I am really paying the price for doing that.

  • Setting up Lion Server mail?

I'm having a lot of trouble setting up mail on Lion Server. I'm not very experienced with this type of stuff (though not totally clueless), so could someone please explain to me setp-by-step, what I need to do? I have a static IP address, a subdomain from my ISP (eg: myipaddress.comcast.net), and a domain which I want to use for mail (eg: example.com). Is there some sort of DNS-related thing that I'm missing? Viewing webpages works fine. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help!

The first issue you may have is the Comcast blocks port 25 as standard practice.  Do you have residential of business service?
Next, how is the server setup?  Is it behind your router/firewall or plugged directly into the internet.  The way you can figure this is by checking the IP address of the server.  If the address is 192.168.x.x, 10.0.0.x, or 172.16.x.x then you are behind a firewall/router.  If it is something else, then you are likely on a public IP address with no devices between you and the internet.
Next, if you have another machine also on the internet (friend's house, business, etc) you can try and access the common mail ports.  From another machine you can try:
    telnet <your_ip_or_host_name_here> 25
    telnet <your_ip_or_host_name_here> 143
    Does the server respond.
Also, did you set up public DNS properly.  For mail to route you should have an A (address) and MX (Mail eXchange) records set up.  Do this:
    nslookup your_host.your_domain.com
What does it say?  For example, say you have a domain of happy.joy.com.  If you did nslookup happy.joy.com you would get a result something like:
    Server:                    172.16.32.1
    Address:          172.16.32.1#53
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:          happy.joy.com
    Address: 207.180.130.15
The IP address should be your address that you are using for your server (if it has a public address) or the address assigned to your router/firewall if your server is behind one.
Next, check your MX record with:
    dig -t mx joy.com
    Here is a shortened output
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;joy.com.                    IN          MX
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    joy.com.          7200          IN          MX          10 happy.joy.com.
These are the structural requirements.  Confirm your ISP is permitting SMTP (port 25) traffic, make sure your public DNS is configured properly, and make sure the machine is reachable.
If you are behind a router/firewall then you will need to do port mapping to allow the ports through.

  • How To Set Up Mountain Lion Server/Point DNS to Mac Mini Server

Hello, First of all I have no experience with setting up servers whatsoever. Below is what I have
    - Mac Mini with Mountain Lion Server
    - Time Capsule as my router
    - Comcast as my service provider
My goal is to set up my MacMini as a sharepoint for files and other data with my other partners.
    - I have purchased a domaine name from NetworkSolutions. Does this mean that they are my DNS hosting as well? Not really sure. My biggest question is how to point my DNS to my mac mini server correctly.
    1. How do you point the DNS to my mac mini server.
    2. I've read somewhere to use the IP address from my mac mini server. The only IP address I see is from my Time Capsule (router). I know what my public IP adress is but I am not sure if that's the one to use. I think once I figure this DNS thing I can figure out the rest.
Thanks - Need lots of help.

Here's a detailed write-up on setting up internal (private) DNS on OS X Server, and no, you're probably not going to be setting up external DNS on your servers.  Your public DNS service will be hosted on and served from the Network Solutions DNS servers.

  • How do I set up file sharing in Lion Server to work like file sharing in Lion Client?

I've just installed Lion Server on my home iMac to enable remote access via VPN to my home network.
When the iMac was running Lion Client (before the upgrade to server), and when File Sharing was enabled on the iMac; when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP, they were always able to connect to (share) any mounted external volumes (external USB or FireWire drives connected to the iMac). e.g.
Now that I've upgraded to Lion Server, when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP they are only able to connect to (share) the sharepoints listed in the File Sharing pane of Server.app. e.g.
Is there any way to set up File Sharing in Lion Server so that it works the same way as it does in Lion Client with respect to mounted external volumes? i.e. they are automatically shared? I know I can add each volume manually to File Sharing in Server.app but this gets tedious.
    Many thanks!

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.

  • How do I set up my Time Machine and Mac Mini with Lion Server so i have one wifi loop in the house?

    HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
    Thanks!
    John

You often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it.

  • How can I set up a mail alias in Mountain Lion Server?

Hi, newbie to Mountain Lion Server here.
I've set up mail for domain a.com and a virtual domain b.com
User a receives mail just fine at [email protected] and [email protected], now I wanted to receive mail for [email protected] as an alias, which I understood after reading the posts here is done by going to 'advanced options' of user a and setting b in the alias field.
But sending a mail to [email protected] bounces with a "550 5.1.1 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table".
However sending a mail to [email protected] does work, so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong.

Hi, it's a late response, I know, but I had same problem just now and in my searching for an answer I found your question. ...better yet, I also found the answer - simply make a user alias including the virtual domain, like for instance if you want alias c to receive mails from both a.com and b.com, you should make two aliases:
    c, [email protected]
where the first alias defaults to a.com as the default domain and the second explicitly specified the virtual domain.
    Cheers

  • How do I get Mac Pro with Lion Server to restart at a set time when users are connected?

I have recently configured a Mac Pro with Lion Server, and have set it to restart automatically every morning at 3am. When I arrive in the morning, I notice that it has not rebooted, usually because it states there are users connected. Is there a way to automatically disconnect users so that the machine will reboot.  No one is ACTIVELY connected at this time of the morning, but may still be logged in somewhere. I did see where I can log out users after a set period of time when using Workgroup Manager to manage a computer or computer group, but I don't use the server to manage all of the computers that have users log in.
    Thanks!

Well, it doesn't necessarily have to be each and every night, but it was for the sole purpose of preventing sluggishness. We had it set up before, as Snow Leopard Server and it would restart every night. It would occasionally be slow and need rebooting, however a manual reboot was not possible by most people in the store as they did not have credentials to screen share and restart it - which would result in holding down the power button to shut it down.
The server is used for the sole purpose of logging in about 50 users just so they can customize their experience, as well as saving items to their own home folders.  The store is closed during the night, and there is no reason anyone would be accessing it during the night.

  • Advise about setting up a permissons on Lion server for a small office.

What is the common wisdom and advise about setting up permissions optimally for a small office using OS X Lion Server as a file server?  I thought I had this solved by setting the ACL permissions so that all users and appropriate groups can read and write all files on the server.  This works great until a new file is created.  Then it appears that the POSIX umask kicks in and takes priority over the ACL permissions.  I need to allow group write permissions on all new files.  My options seem to be:
Make everyone an admin - not great for obvious security reasons
Change the umask for the whole machine - also security problems, though perhaps fewer than the everyone-an-admin route above
Write a folder action applescript to add group write permission on all new files.  This works fine if you have a static number of folders  With new folders it has the problem: How do new folders created by non-admin users get this folder action automatically applied to them - some cronjob to hunt down the new folders; an applesscrpt folder action that adds a folder action to all new folders (sounds recursively complicated)?
Have a cron job regularly do something like  `chmod -R 664` on all files.  This will break during those between the cracks times between when someone creates a new file and when the cronjob runs - not ideal.
Seems like this should be easier which makes me think I'm missing something obvious.
Any help great appreciated.  Thank you in advance!

Good-heart's advice is certainly your first step, but if you've already done that and still have the problem you've described, you might have the 10.7.3 ACL bug, particularly if your users and groups are in an OD or AD rather than being local accounts on the server. The problem is that ACL's for directory accounts are incorrectly ignored, resulting in POSIX permissions coming into play.
    I've descibed my workaround for this here;
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18037703
    I haven't yet tried the other trick I've read about, which is to ensure your Share's data directories are at least one level down on the volume - there is a post here on the Communities that mentions this;
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18028746
I seem to remember that this helped with an earlier version of AFP, if using external firewire or usb storage.
Let us know if you find a fix, it seems a number of people have problems with this.

  • Need help setting up Lion Server

Here's my story... I got a 2006 Xserve for free. It has 2 dual core 2.66 Xeons, 4 GB of RAM, and 2 300 GB SAS drives that I have turned into a RAID 1 array. I've installed OS X Lion Server on it and all is running okay. My OS X Server knowledge is slim to none. I do a little work with it at my job, but our main servers are Windows. I'd like to set it up as a DHCP and Open Directory server at home, just for fun. My home network consists of this Xserve, my 27" iMac, a MacBook Pro, an Xbox, a Samsung TV, a couple of iPads and our iPhones.
I go from my Charter modem, to my AirPort Extreme, and then broadcast wirelessly to my other devices, and have my Xserve plugged into port 1.
To get DHCP working, do I need to go from my modem to my Xserve, and then from my Xserve to the WAN port on my AirPort Extreme? Or do I just need to configure something?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

If you have just Lion Server installed, go here for the rest of the tools:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1528
This will include Server Admin.  It will allow you to define DHCP, DNS, and other services not available in Lion's Server.app.
You networking knowledge will apply here.  It sounds like you want to use the Xserve as the NAT gateway.  This is possible, but you will need Server Admin to make it easier.

  • Help setting up Lion Server for remote access

I have been going in cricles for weeks trying to set this up correctly.  Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I got Lion Server and Server Admin Tools all updated and have been trying to follow Terry Walsh from We Got Served's guide but I missing something.
I purchased a domain from GoDaddy. Let's call it bradnet.com
My domain and dyn domain are not really what I have typed here but close enought that they should work for my example and trouble shooting.
Because my ISP (Comcast) doesn't provide a static IP I registerd for an account with dyn.com.  This is where I get really confused.  With dyn.com i created a host name: bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com and downloaded there updater software.  It found my public IP address and said everything is ok.
I went back to GoDaddy and in my DNS manger page added the host: bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com and entered my public IP.
I then went to the server pane to edit the host name.  I followed your instructions to edit the name and selected Host Name for Internet.  I left the computer name as mini (what I had previously named it for file sharing before the server upgrade) and entered  mini.bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com as the host name.  When it takes me back to the server pane, in the bottom window it states:
Your Server's host name is mini.bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com, and its IP address is 192.168.1.10. You can change network settings in the Server pane.
I never get the your network is configured properly message.
I went and set my computer's IP to DHCP with manual address (although all of my machines are set up with DHCP reservations so I guess that is a little redundant) to 192.168.1.10.
I skipped the port forwarding step because I am using the latest AirPort Extreme as my router.
I then opened a browser and tried:
    http://bradnet.com
    http://mini.bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com
    http://mini.bradnet.com
    http://bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com
All of these got me the can't find the server response from Safari.
Also, I have not yet set up Directory Services.  Terry's guide seems to suggest to do this step first.
I'm sure I have messed up some step somewhere can you see what I have done wrong?
Also, is it a problem to set up open directory services using a .local host and then go back and change it for internet access later or do you need to set that up from the start?  My family is getting impatient with me trying to get this to work.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!
    Brad

That manual page is not fully correct. There is written:
Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port value(s)>
Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port value(s)>
Private IP Address: <enter the reserved IP address of the host device (from step 1)>
Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same Public UDP Ports or your choice>
Private TCP Port(s): <enter the same Public TCP Ports or your choice>
    But it should be:
Public UDP Port(s): <enter unique UDP Ports of your choice>
Public TCP Port(s): <enter unique TCP Ports of your choice>
Private IP Address: <enter the reserved IP address of the host device (from step 1)>
Private UDP Port(s): <enter the UDP Ports used by your device>
Private TCP Port(s): <enter the TCP Ports used by your device>
Make sure you use the same ports in the private settings as you have defined in your IP camera. Normally a camera will use port 80 by default, so use 80 here.
The Public ports must all be unique. If you have not defined a port 80 here, you can also use 80. This will fail however when using multiple cameras. I for instance have 5 IP cameras and use the public ports 8451, 8452, 8453 etc.
