Lion update - modifier keys ignored

I have a Logitech Cordless MediaBoard Pro - though there's no command key, in 10.6 I had remapped the caps lock key to the command key. In Lion, this same setting (System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Modifier Keys) doesn't seem to be functioning. The default key mappings and their associated functions do seem TO BE RECOGNIZED (hardy har har) - so I don't think it's entirely keyboard driver specific. Help? I'd really like to copy, paste, switch apps, and quit apps seamlessly!

Yes, I think that I figured out that for some reason there were two keyboards listed. Also, once I installed the Microsoft Keyboard preferences plugin, it seemed to work allright as well.
I've bought a new Mini since then, and haven't seen those issue there (I use my old mini as a headless server, so no keyboard attached).

  • Modifier keys not working after 10.6.7 update

After the most recent 10.6.7 update, my modifier keys no longer work. I switched my Command and Option keys over a year ago, but now even when I'm in System Preferences>Keyboard>Modifier Keys and I switch them back and forth from Restore Defaults to the way I had them, nothing changes. I deleted  /username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.HIToolbox.UUID.plist and logged off and back on, but that didn't work. Any suggestions?

Hello fuchs (guess), If you cancelled while downloading the 4GB Lion, no problem, download again. Snow Leopard should run (start holding the option key).
If you cancelled during the install process, I do not know. In this case you could try to start with the CMD + R keys pressed, and choose the restore, which may work if the creation of the restore partition of Lion has finished.
If that does not work, reinstall Snow Leopard with the CD (start holding the C key), after that download the Combo Update 10.6.8 to update the Snow Leopard completely, then redownload Lion (App Store, click "purchases" while holding the Option Key, find Lion, click "install"). If you want to have your own copy of the Lion installer, you have to copy the installer to a Memory stick or burn to DVD before you install, see else where.

  • Accent keys/tilde keys ignored in urxvt

I've recently been noticing a problem when using vim.  On the DE layout there's a tilde key that can be reached by hitting "alt gr" and "+", which works fine in my terminal, firefox, etc. (It's a "dead key", thus requiring a double-press, but I don't mind that at all), and my accent key (` and ´) is available without a modifier key (again, it works in most programs).
However, in Vim (and Nano as well - but otherwise no other applications show this behaviour), neither key results in a character.  I can use the ctrl+k method in vim and copying/pasting the character works as well, but this seems kind of pointless to me, since I have the keys on my keyboard (and they worked previously).  It's as if the keypress is ignored entirely (such as loading a 102 key layout for a 104 key keyboard results in "empty" keys).
Would this be a setting in my zshrc or my vimrc, or is this a locales problem?  Or did Vim simply change that functionality in an update?
I'm unsure of where I should look for a solution and googling for results hasn't yet returned a working solution.  On a possibly related note, I have also noticed that my middle-mouse-key copy and paste has stopped working from urxvt.  I can highlight the text and paste it within the same terminal, but I can't paste it into, for example, Firefox.  The only change I remember making before I noticed this problem popping up is the fact that I configured SCIM.
I've tried to include as much information as I found relevant, but I will happily provide any more information that may be required.

*EDIT* I just checked in Sakura and Vim registers and displays tilde after double-presses, and accents need to be completed with a space (not a big deal for me).  Now I just need to figure out why rxvt-unicode isn't doing the same.  Any suggestions on where to start?
*EDIT #2* The issue is occurring in urxvt itself now (I could swear it was working before though, but I have no concrete evidence of that fact).  Probably means it's related to my rxvt configuration somehow (and the middle-mouse copy/paste not working is probably also related).  I've updated the title to reflect this.

The double-press works in DWM (my WM of choice on my PC) and AwesomeWM (on my laptop, which is also experiencing the same issue) in all applications besides the two I mentioned above.  I've also tried it by ending it with a space, a letter (i.e. n after tilde, or e after an accent) and it results in just the letter (n or e) in Nano/Vim.  The terminal is rxvt-unicode (not the 256 color one from AUR).
My machines are both 64bit setups.
On a side-note, is there any way to check if keypresses are being registered in Vim? (i.e. a way to see the keysym).

  • [SOLVED] xmodmap qt4 modifier keys no longer work

Hi, I'm nearing the "hair-pulling stage because Googling this issue did not yield helpful results" stage.
I am having trouble getting modifier keys (CTRL, ALT) to work in qt apps after loading my custom keymap (as provided by ~/.Xmodmap). If my custom keymap is not loaded, then ctrl, alt keys work fine in qt apps. That is, it is only when this custom keymap is loaded that qt apps no longer respond to what I have mapped as the CTRL and ALT keys.
I have awesome wm setup to load the command xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap automatically on startup using this lua code:
    awful.util.spawn("xmodmap " .. os.getenv("HOME") .. "/.Xmodmap")
My ~/.Xmodmap has comments on what I've switched around.
I am not sure what is causing this to occur? How can I fix this?
FYI on Xfce4 loading the custom key mappings don't lead to this issue with qt apps not responding to what I've set as modifier keys.
Update 10/08/2014 5:55PM CST It turns out I had a different .Xmodmap from when I was using Xfce4. There's something funky with the version I was using with awesome wm.  I've updated Xmodmap here, in case somebody runs into a similar issue.

To get my inspiron 8500 working I had to use the xkbmodel set to inspiron and remap a little like this
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Keyboard0"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "CoreKeyboard"
    Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option "XkbOptions" "altwin:super_win"
    # Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbModel" "inspiron"
    Option "XkbLayout" "gb"
Manually configured other keys in ~/.Xmodmap. To see current mappings use "xmodmap -pk"
    keycode 162 = XF86AudioPlay
    keycode 153 = XF86AudioNext
    keycode 144 = XF86AudioPrev
    keycode 164 = XF86AudioStop
    keycode 129 =
    keycode 130 =
    keycode 131 =
    keycode 132 =
The 129-132 were wrongly mapped so I unmapped them
I then still had to configure Amarok global shortcuts to use the keys, but it worked, Maybe as I am using XFCE.

  • Modifier Key Mapping Not Working

When I'm at home, I connect my MacBook Pro to a 24" LCD, along with an external keyboard and mouse. One of the small features I was looking forward to in Leopard was not having to go into System Preferences and switch the modifier keys to correctly work with my external keyboard, but I've discovered that the feature isn't working. I choose "USB Receiver" from the keyboard drop-down, re-map the Option and Command keys, click OK, and close SysPrefs. Nothing has changed; the Command key on my keyboard is still performing as Option and Option is still Command. When I go into the Keyboard & Mouse section of SysPrefs, the Modifier Keys pane is back to it's default values. I'm wondering if this is a bug in 10.5 that will be fixed with 10.5.1, or if it's just my keyboard. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

    Any updates on this bug?
On my Powerbook, I have to swap the modifier keys under the "All" setting to make the change take effect on the external USB keyboard I'm using. Changing modifier keys on just the "DELL USB KEYBOARD" (in my particular case) has no effect.
It's just a minor annoyance (having to reset my modifier keys back to defaults when I need to use the built-in keyboard), but all the same the feature doesn't appear to work as it should.
    Or is it just me?

  • Zoom:Use Scroll wheel with Modifier Keys to Zoom

Help! Since the 10.6 update from 10.4.11, I can no longer zoom in and out by holding Command while moving scroll ring on my Kensington Expert Mouse. I have tried other modifier keys to no avail.
I suspect a conflict, but do not know where to fix it. When in Firefox 3.5.2., Command plus scroll ring zooms the active window nicely. Any ideas or should I provide feedback to Apple or both? Thanks! DJ

The default key for scrolling zoom is not Command but Control. To change this, go to System Preferences —> Universal Access and click on the Seeing tab. In the Zoom pane, click on the Options button, and in the sheet that drops down, select the text box at the bottom, highlight the character there, then press the modifier key you prefer.

  • Update/Modify not working

    hi,
    i have ztable
    mandt key field
    ztest1  key field
    ztest2  key field
    ztest2  non key field
when i'm trying to modify any key field, MODIFY keyword is actually adding a new record in the Database. it is because the new combination of key fields is unique.
i tried using update statement . Update is not working as the combination key is creating a new record which is not present in Db and hence , its not updating.
do we have any workaround on this ??
if i update the key field same field should be updated with other fields intact
    please help.

    key field means unique record.
if u try to change a key field it will add a new entry.
to an existing entry with a key combination u can change only the non-key fields.
else u need to delete the record combination and add the new combination.

  • MacBook won't wake up, just installed lion update

I just installed a Mountain Lion update and as it was finishing, I heard the computer make a short beeping sound and then the screen went black. I tried pressing some keys but the screen remained black, despite the power light and fan remaining on. After pressing and holding the power button, the fan and power turned off. The computer will not turn on now.
    What's going on with it??

    Hello Ya_dont_say,
Sorry to hear your MacBook Pro is not powering on.  I found an article that can help with getting your MacBook Pro to power back on:
Intel-Based Apple Portables: Troubleshooting a computer that will not power on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1365
I would start with the first step and work through them, but if you have verified your computer has power and disconnected all external devices besides the power adapter, step 6 might be the most useful:
    6. Review the steps for resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) on your Apple portable computer.
I hope this helps get you back on track!
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • External keyboard and modifier keys

I like to swap my "Ctrl" and "Command" modifiers keys and I've never had a problem doing this until upgrading to Lion.  If I disconnect and reconnect my external keyboard sometimes my modifier keys are reset.
Lion lets you change modifier keys per keyboard which is where I think the problem lies.  I also have duplicate listings for my external keyboard and I'm not sure how to delete the duplicates.
Does anyone know how to fix these issues?

Also, I'm not sure if it matters but my mouse and keyboard are connected through a USB hub which then connects to the Macbook Air.

  • How to make modifier keys lockable? (like Caps Lock for Ctrl or Alt)

Playing around with the non-modal text editor ne, I found myself wondering if one could simulate a modal interface (like vim has) by having something like "Ctrl Lock" or "Alt Lock" (analogous to Caps Lock) and thus a "ctrl mode"/"alt mode". I would like to try this, but I am not sure how to make it happen.
My best guess is that this could be accomplished via XKB, but its documentation looks pretty intimidating. Is anyone here proficient in XKB and could point me in the right direction?
    Other ideas:
    – Is this something that a terminal emulator could do? Is there already one that can do it?
    – Or a shell?
    – For console applications, would it be possible to have a small wrapper that did nothing but intercept keyboard input and just pass everything through to the wrapped process, except that it would take into account the desired lockable modifier key? (I am thinking of tput here, but from my first search it appears that it doesn't do this sort of thing.)

@Trilby: Thank you for the elaborate input!
@drcouzelis: "sticky keys" normally means that modifiers remain active only until the next keypress, while I want a way to lock them in active state for an arbitrary number of keypresses. But still, "sticky keys" was a worthwile input for the search engine.
The program xkbset, which can be used to set XKB options on the fly, has a function that comes very close to what I desire:
    $ xkbset h
Usage: To set or unset various options:
    xkbset <options>
where <options> may be all or any of (the '-' switches the feature off,
    otherwise it is switched on):
To switch sticky keys on or off, and optionally set or reset:
    () two keys pressed at the same time stops sticky keys;
() a modifier pressed twice will be locked:
    [-]{sticky|st} [[-]twokey|[-]latchlock]...
I cannot select specific modiers to be affected with xkbset, but that would be fine with me. Sadly, it didn't completely work for me:
    – It doesn't affect Alt at all for me.
    – The effect seems to go away as soon as I change the window. (Maybe I need to invoke xkbset from .xinitrc for its effects to persist throughout the session? I will try that.)
So I went on and tried to configure XKB manually. I got up to a certain point without studying the documentation in-depth, but now I have landed on an error message that seems to suggest to me that I would have to get to a better understanding about the layout files before I could understand it. Here is what I did:
    1. Got my current XKB configuration:
    xkbcomp :0 output.xkb
    2. Editet output.xkb to include the following at the end of the xkb_compatibility section:
    //Hoping this makes the ^-key into a Ctrl-Lock key:
    interpret TLDE {
    action= LockMods(modifiers=Control);
    3. Then I recompiled the configuration back into the running X server:
    $ xkbcomp out.xkb :0

The "Error" part is where I am currently stuck. It tells me that my changes were ignored (I no that it's about them because it goes away when I comment them out), but I don't yet understand why.

  • Safari 6.0.3 doesnt work now that I installed Mountain Lion Update?

I just installed the Mountain Lion update on my Mac Book Pro.
Now, when I open Safari, it sits and spins (won't access any websites or anything). I checked on firefox (internet works), I closed it and reopened it. I restarted my computer...all to no avail.
How do I reinstall Safari or try to reinstall ML in order to get the newly updated Safari to work? Anyone else having this issue?
    Thanks All!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Missing the Message App after Mountain Lion Update

My Macbook Pro totally crashed after the Mountain Lion update, and a wonderful tech support lady at Apple walked me though hours of restoring it. However, now that it is working fine and all programs re-installed, I noticed that the Message app is missing. I really like this app and want it back. I paid for the OS and think I should get everything I had before, plus the update. I shouldn't lose a program in the update, should I? I've read through all the other message boards and can find only general suggestions to search in the spotlight (which I did to no avail), and I have searched for a third-party download. After the trouble I've had, I really just want the program back from Apple. HELP!

If it did not get reinstalled for some reason, then you will need to reinstall. See the following. You can avoid this if you have a prior backup.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Macbook Pro won't start up passed installer after failed lion update.

After installing what seems now to be a phony Lion update, my mac won't fully start up. Whenever i turn it on it will bring me to the installer and I can't seem to figure out how to start up on snow leopard again. I believe all my files are still intact. Whenever i turn it on it brings me to language options then utilities where i can choose to start from back up, disc utilites, reinstall lion, or use safari. Can anyone help me with this?

Since you appear to be running Lion do the following:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. • After last Moutain Lion update, suddenly and sporadically I cannot move my files using my mouse.  I only get a "ghost" image.  Moving items to the trash is, of course no problem.  Does anyone have a solution?  I've updated my permissions...no go!

Cannot move icon files using my mouse or cursor after installing Mountion Lion's last update.  After rebooting several times, this sometimes fixes the problem.  I've tried checking and updating my permissions, but this hasn't worked.  What's happening?  I haven't backed up so I can't go back to Lion.  Has this happened to anyone else?  What can I try?  Thanks!

    Try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Now download and install OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 (Combo).
