Loading external scripts or swfs?

Hello, all
I’m trying to build a highscore system for my game.
I’ll give away the game, so the game can be hosted in several
different servers, but they’ll load highscores from MY
server.
The problem is: I know many security changes were made past
player versions, and sometimes things just stop working because we
can’t access a file or script that is hosted in a different
server!
I guess I have two choices:
1) Making all games load a separated swf,
“highscores.swf”, that will contain all highscores
access routines; or
2) Putting all highscores inside the game, and then loading
an external php script that will contain highscores data.
I know both solutions – loading an external swf and
loading an external php file – were blocked once in Flash
Player lifetime, hehe. So what’s the safest one? Which one
should I use to maximize the lifetime of my highscores system? Does
anyone knows if they are planning to block loading external swfs,
or external scripts?
Thanks

  • Loading External Files From SWF Root

    Hi All,
    I do not know anything about flash.  I have been provided with some flash movies/apps to include in a web design that I am doing.  These flash movies load an external xml file.
    This is failing.
    The problem appears to be that when the flash movie goes to load the file using a relative directory path, it starts at the very root of the web directory, where the main jsp file is, instead of the where the .swf file is located.
    For example, say my website is www.mywebsite.com/mysite.jsp and I have stored the flash in a directory similar to /mywebsite.com/flash/movie1/movie1.swf.
    When the movie goes to play, I am getting a 404 error in firebug because the flash movie is trying to load the external xml from /mywebsite.com/file.xml instead of /mywebsite.com/flash/movie1/file.xml.
    How can this be corrected?  Is there a way for the flash application to use the .swf root directory instead of the .jsp file root directory?
    I hope this made sense.  Good chance it doesn't.

    When you load the Flash file into a web page, the web page becomes its frame of reference for loading other content.  So to fix this situation you should either relocate things to where the Flash file lives in the same directory as the web page that loads it, or retarget the files that the Flash file is loading as if it were in the web page's folder (using absolute paths should guarantee correct targeting).

  • Loading external .jpgs or .swfs on different layers

    Hi all. Hope someone can help me. How do I get an external
    file I upload onto a website through a movieClip instance, to load
    behind certain stuff. For instance: I have drop-up and drop-down
    menus and want the file thats uploaded to load behind that specific
    layer. Do I use code like "send to back", and what would the code
    be? I am attaching my currant code so that you can tell me what to
    add, and where. Thanks.

    create a new layer that is under the layer of your 'certain
    stuff'. then create a new symbol, Movie Clip, and drag an instance
    of it from the library to the stage on to the newly created layer..
    then give that movie clip an instance name of holder_mc. and take
    out
    var holder_mc = this.createEmptyMovieClip("holder_mc",
    this.getNextHighestDepth());
    from the code

  • Passing variables to loaded external movie

    Ok, this problem has beaten me for the last 2 days. It seems
    to be extremely simple, I am on main movie and I am using
    MovieClipLoader class to load external movie callMe.swf into movie
    holder called holder_MC, then from main using onLoadInit or
    onLoadProgress listeners I can target dynamic text inside
    callMe.swf as holder_MC.myTXT.text = "blablabla" or I can change
    frames in callMe.swf by holder_MC.gotoAndStop(5). But HOW TO PASS
    VARIABLE myVar to callMe.swf so it executes something there? Using
    holder_MC.myVar DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks for any help,
    Zbynek

    UPDATE... I copied the link to another page with my variables in the image attributes as I posted above. And it works using the values that are cached for those items. Is there any way to do this on the same page as my original link without my users having to change to a different page?

  • Unable to load external swf which has runtime sharing with another swf.

    Hi,
    I am getting issues on loading external swf say "importer.swf" file into another swf file say "loader.swf" for second time like
    ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable testSymbol is not defined. VerifyError: Error #1014: Class testClass could not be found.
    at global$init()
    In the external swf "importer.swf", i am trying to import the symbol "testSymbol" from another swf file say "exporter.swf", which exports through runtime sharing option for the symbols.
    I am having some buttons in loader.swf file and on each button click i am loading different swf files into the loader.swf after unloading the previous one.
    I am able to load and unload different swf files but unable to load the importer.swf file which is sharing symbols from external swf and that too for the second time i.e., when i click the button twice.
    When trying to debug with flash debugger, all the other swf files are being unloaded before loading of another swf but the swf which is sharing symbols/classes with another swf is not getting unloaded.
    Output when i am trying to load two files example and importer files into loader.swf file on two different button clicks. On first button click example.swf is loaded. On second button click , example.swf is unloaded and importer.swf is loaded which is successful. On first button click again importer.swf is unloaded and example.swf is loaded. On second button click again, example.swf is unloaded and importer.swf is loaded, here i am getting issues shown above.

    I got my answer. I had to append the photo url to the 'movie' value of the javascript embed method. Like this:
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
       AC_FL_RunContent(
          'codebase', 'http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=10,0,0,0',
          'width', '550',
          'height', '400',
          'src', 'lesson2',
          'quality', 'high',
          'pluginspage', 'http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer',
          'align', 'middle',
          'play', 'true',
          'loop', 'true',
          'scale', 'showall',
          'wmode', 'window',
          'devicefont', 'false',
          'id', 'lesson2',
          'bgcolor', '#ffffff',

  • Loading external SWF's into an SWF Loader as3 style?

    Hi,
    I've recently made the switch from as2 to as3 and am still struggling to get my head around one aspect in particular. I've managed to load one external swf into a blank file via the script
    import LoadDisplayObject;
    var loader:LoadDisplayObject = new LoadDisplayObject("button_01.swf", true);
    loader.addEventListener("displayObjectLoaded", onComplete, false, 0, true);
    addChild(loader);
    function onComplete(evt:Event):void {
         trace("loaded complete received");
         loader.scaleX = loader.scaleY = .75;
    .....however I'm struggling with the script to make a swfs load into a space when one of my 3 buttons is clicked....
    My page currently has three buttons (button_01, button_02 and button_03) and in a local folder three separate swfs with the same names which I wish to load in, when the appropriate button is pressed.
    I have managed to get them to load in using a tutorial...however they load over the top of each over...far from ideal. From research on the internet I've found a range of different script...but I just can’t find anywhere I can find script to make this work..hence why I have turned to here.
    Any help much appreciated...thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Just throught I would let you know that I've manged to get this to work this morning. Changed the script slightly and used a different method of:
    var home:MovieClip = this;
    function butt1Click(evt:MouseEvent):void {
        var ldr:Loader = new Loader();
        ldr.load(new URLRequest("button_01.swf"));
        ldr.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.INIT, loaded);
    function butt2Click(evt:MouseEvent):void {
        var ldr:Loader = new Loader();
        ldr.load(new URLRequest("button_02.swf"));
        ldr.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.INIT, loaded);
    function butt3Click(evt:MouseEvent):void {
        var ldr:Loader = new Loader();
        ldr.load(new URLRequest("button_03.swf"));
        ldr.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.INIT, loaded);
    function loaded(evt: Event):void {
        if(contentClip.numChildren > 0){
            contentClip.removeChildAt(0);
        contentClip.addChild(evt.target.content);
    button_01.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, butt1Click);
    button_02.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, butt2Click);
    button_03.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, butt3Click);
    seems to work well. Only small question is if I want one page to load automatically upon opening...how do I alter the script to do this??? Thanks

  • Loading external .swf with external images

    I have created a basic website and wish to load an external
    .swf file into it. The .swf loads fine but the images that are to
    load within that particular .swf do not. The images are external
    and load using this action script.
    btn1.onRelease = function (){
    loadMovie ("IMG_2812.jpg", _root.photo.empty)
    They load fine using just the .swf file but when the .swf is
    loaded within another document it doesnt load the imgs.

    add
    this._lockroot = true;
    to frame 1 of the main timeline of your external swf.
    retest.

  • Help with loading External SWFs

    Hi:
    I need to load external swfs into a mc. They will play in
    sequence, as soon as one ends, the next one will start. When
    running it blows by the first external swf (start.swf) and the rest
    of the external swfs will not continue to load and play after the
    objectives.swf. Could someone take a look at my code and tell me
    what I’m doing wrong?
    I’ve created controls that will allow me to play, pause
    and stop the external swfs while they’re playing (however,
    these buttons do not seem to have any effect on the external swf
    when it is playing). I think it is a scope issue, but I am not
    sure.
    Also, there’s a combo box at the bottom, which allows
    the user to jump to any external swf (it actually jumps to certain
    labels on the main timeline) at any time. The combo box appears to
    work OK.
    The FLA is located at:
    www.digitalhorizonstudios.com/exstream/newplayer.fla
    By the way, this presentation is a fullscreen .exe file when
    in use, not a swf played in an html file.
    Thanks SO MUCH for any help on this one.

    Please try this line of script:
    var myLoader:Loader = new Loader(); //create the varaible for the loader
    var myURL:URLRequest = new URLRequest("A.swf");// create the variable for the swf to be loaded
    myLoader.load(myURL)
    addChild(myLoader);

  • Flash cs4 mac - Error opening URL '/:Users:someting.swf' - Not a "loading external content" problem

    Hello.
    I am having a weird problem when trying to test a movie or publish preview -> flash on mac with Leopard os.
    The result is a blank movie with the usuall "movie not loaded" if u right click on it and the output returns the "Error opening URL 'the path of the swf here'.
    This has nothing to do with loading external files or something like that. It happens even in blank movies and it gives the same error if I try to open a swf from flash ide.
    I can publish the project or export the movie with no problem at all.
    I can preview the movie in html. I can run all the swf files in my hard disk, network, usb stick, dvd etc., but when I try to open any of these files from flash ide I got that stupid error.
    Its not something that stops me from working in flash ide but its slow to export movie any time I want to test it.
    Things that I've tried so far but nothing worked:
    Update the flash cs4 to the latest version
    Update the flash players
    Restored the release flash player as default player (I am using as default the debug player)
    Cleared the preferences
    Move the flash cs4 folder to another location in hd
    Saved the fla document first before testing the movie (in different places with or without spaces in document name or folder)
    Give read & write permissions for everyone for flash.app, players and for fla files when saved first before test movie
    Unistall and install the application 3-4 times.
    Test every as version just in case.
    Also I've checked the folders when testing movie and I can see that it creates an swf file, which I can run it outside flash ide (the one that the flash ide player cannot load) with no problem.
    The mac os has the default set up as it came. Nothing chnaged in permissions or security settings.
    Thanx in advance.

    In this particular example I am using this code to start the
    xml file load:
    // now load the XML file that contains the content strings
    var sXMLFile:String = "xml/home.xml";
    var xmlContent:XML = new XML();
    xmlContent.ignoreWhite = true;
    xmlContent.onLoad = onXMLLoadComplete;
    xmlContent.load( sXMLFile );
    But I don’t think the code is the problem here . This
    happens on every file I load when I am using a relative path to the
    content, regardless of how I load the content (XML object,
    loadMovie, MovieClipLoader, etc…) and the same code executes
    perfectly on every other machine in the office(Mac and PC).
    I’m more concerned with the semi-colons and .swf filename
    that Flash is putting into my relative path on the error message.
    Is that normal?

  • FAQ: SWF's and loading external files in Flash Catalyst

    How do I make the images in my Flash Catalyst project external to the published SWF?
    You can choose whether images are embedded in your Flash Catalyst SWF, or loaded dynamically; this can help to keep your SWF's small. Simply right-click an image and chose "Externalize Image".
    Answered by: Adam Cath.
    See entire discussion.
    How do I make the SWF I imported to Flash Catalyst load external files?
    When importing a SWF, Flash Catalyst only pulls the SWF asset into your project. Many SWF's, such as slideshows and media players, rely on external data files, such as configuration files or media assets. If you would like to use such a SWF in Catalyst, then you will have to place these external resources into your Catalyst project as well as importing the SWF.
    Let's assume you have a SWF source folder that contains your SWF file and all of the external files it needs. You can open the SWF file from this folder and it works fine. But, if you import the SWF into Catalyst, the Catalyst project doesn't display it correctly because it can't load the external files. Here's what you do:
    1. Open your swf source folder, and copy all of the files/folders there except the SWF you imported.
    2. In Catalyst, Run/Preview your project (Ctl/Cmd-Enter)
    2. Note the file path to Main.html in your browser
    3. In your OS, open the folder that contains /bin-debug/Main.html from above
    4. Open the "src" folder
    5. Paste all of the files from step 1 into the src folder.
    6. Catalyst won't pick up that your project changed, so tweak it a bit (add a Rectangle), and save it.
    7. Run your project. If it doesn't work, try closing and reopening your project and running again.
    For an example, check out: Using an XML-driven SWF in Catalyst to create a slideshow.

    You can make you swf a custom component with 2 states.
    The first state will be empty and rename it "OFF" the second state will have your swf file and name it ON.
    Then go back to your artboard/project, add your 2 buttons ON & OFF.
    For the ON button add interaction "play transition to custom component ON"
    For the OFF button add interaction "play transition to custom component OFF"
    Here is an example swf_control

  • Loading external swfs

    iv made a flash site using as3 using the actionscript on the
    first frame, this by itself works fine.
    iv also used an online tutorial to help create a dynamic
    slideshow/photo gallery which again works fine, but this time using
    an external .as file.
    When i try to load the external slideshow/gallery into a
    movieclip in the site it dosnt work and i get this error:
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of
    a null object reference.
    im pretty sure its because the code used in the main flash
    file is on the timeline and the code in the external file to be
    loaded in is in an external as file.
    any help on how to get this to work would be much
    appreciated!
    the code im using to load the external flash file is:
    var toload =new Loader();
    toload.load(new URLRequest("newfile.swf"));
    photography.buttonThumb.addChild(toload);

    This error, in my experience, is usually triggered by some
    code in the loaded movie trying to use some property value that it
    cannot find. In my case it is usually a reference to the size of
    the stage, either its width or height or both. So, if you have some
    code that is executing immediately in this loaded movie, try
    changing this to a function that can be called once the movie has
    fully loaded.

  • Loading external swf  not complete

    Hi, I'm trying to load external swf (with more than one frame and actionscript 3 on every frame - I used there "timeline" coding) from my main swf.
    code for loading external swf into main swf:
    var loader01:Loader;
    function openGame1(evt:Event):void
    loader01 = new Loader();
    var requestSWF01:URLRequest = new URLRequest("game01.swf");
    loader01.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, processHandler);
    loader01.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.INIT, initHandler);
    loader01.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, errorHandler);
    loader01.load(requestSWF01);
    addChild(loader01);
    function processHandler(evt:ProgressEvent):void
    var loaded:Number=evt.target.bytesLoaded;
    var total:Number=evt.target.bytesTotal;
    var stav:Number=loaded/total;
    loaded_txt.text=(Math.round(stav*100))+" %";
    function initHandler(evt:Event):void{
    loaded_txt.text="";
    function errorHandler(evt:IOErrorEvent):void
         trace ("Error: " + evt.text);
    I found out that this works only for loading swf, which has only one frame (and all actionscript on that frame)... It seems that if there are more frames, than it will not load complete swf (hmm maybe it is caused, because not all objects on frames are export in first frame). Preloading starts but after for example 20 % the event.INIT is fired and the external swf starts to play (and crashes..).
    You can see this here http://bvyborcik.xf.cz/  If you click on the blue building on the left with blinking text "Start hry" you will see what happens - preloading is not completed and after clicking on first floor btn, the swf crashes...
    Please is there a solution for this kind of problem?  Any help or pointing is welcome.
    regards Boris

    just curious, is the file you want to load the swf into set up exactly the same way with the same stage size, fps, and layers?

  • Variable scope with loaded external SWF's?

    I’ve got an SWF, call it calcLite, that will be deployed both independently (ie: attached to an HTML doc) and also imported at run time (linked as an external asset via the loader class) to another SWF, let’s call it calcPro. That part is working fine.
    I’ve got a global variable, gRunMode:String that calcLite must declare and set when it’s running independently, but must inherit when attached to calcPro (which will declare and set gRunMode before attaching calcLite).
    Here’s where I am:
    At the root of calcPro:
    var gRunMode:String = “touchScreen”;
    At the root of calcLite:
    var gRunMode:String = “web”
    if (this.parent == this.stage) {
         gRunMode = MovieClip(this.parent.parent.parent).gRunMode;
    I’ve also tried creating function in the parent to return gRunMode:
    At the root of calcPro:
    var gRunMode:String = “touchScreen”;
    function getRunMode():String {
         return gRunMode;
    At the root of calcLite:
    var gRunMode:String = “web”
    if (this.parent == this.stage) {
         gRunMode = MovieClip(this.parent.parent.parent). getRunMode();
    I’ve also tried the second technique, renaming the global in calcPro to gRunModeExe incase there was a naming violation. In all cases I get “attempt to access prop of a null” error. The construct MovieClip(this.parent.parent.parent).function() works, I use it later in the program for a different function and it’s fine, just doesn’t work here.

    My bad, I wrote the post from memory at home. My actual code properly tested the stage (!=) and would have worked EXCEPT under the following condition:
    This is my second project in a row that involved an SWF that must operate independently and also function as a loaded child to a bigger project. What I keep forgetting is that loaded content begins to execute IMMEDIATELY!!!, it does not wait to be attached to the stage. Further, loaded content does not have access to stage assets until it’s been attached, so any premature attempts to access global variables and functions from loaded clip to stage fail. A good explanation of these issues can be found here (scroll to middle of page, post by senocular titled Access to stage and root): http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1955201
    The solution was simple enough. If calcLite is running as a child, stop in frame 1 (before any other processing) and wait for calcPro to push us to the next frame (which happens after attachment to the stage). If calcLite is running independently skip the stop and proceed as normal.
    As for this.parent.parent.parent vs. this.parent.parent vs this.parent, since gRunMode is global within the calcPro scope any of these would probably work (although I’ve only tested the first option). The first parent references the loader object, the second parent references the movie clip to which the loader object is attached, and the third parent finally references root.
