Hi MBR
You would be better posting your question to the general XML forums:
http://forums.oracle.com/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=51
This is purely for XML/BI Publisher where we get the data back out of the db :o)

  • Loading XML files to an oracle database

    Hi,
    I have some users who would like to send me XML files that I would need to parse and load into multiple tables in my Oracle database. Since I'm new to XML, I'd like to know if XMK DB is the technology that I need to explore in order to do this, and if so, are there any white papers or articles out there that might get me started.
    I have previously loaded data into my databases via text files that I parsed using text_io, I'm not sure if there is a significant advantage in using XML. This data load is going to be on an regular basis and I would like to validate the data the data before loading this.
    Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Azeem.

    XML is becoming the defacto method of exchanging data between systems due to it's self describing nature. XML DB is the preferred way of processing XML in Oracle 9iR2 and later. The banner for this forum provides links to the XML DB OTN pages where you can find lots of information related to using XML DB.

  • Best method to load XML data into Oracle

    Hi,
    I have to load XML data into Oracle tables. I tried using different options and have run into a dead end in each of those. I do not have knowledge of java and hence have restricted myself to PL/SQL solutions. I tried the following options.
    1. Using DBMS_XMLSave package : Expects the ROWSET and ROW tags. Connot change format of the incoming XML file (Gives error oracle.xml.sql.OracleXMLSQLException: Start of root element expected).
    2. Using the XMLPARSER and XMLDOM PL/SQL APIs : Works fine for small files. Run into memory problems for large files (Gives error java.lang.OutOfMemoryError). Have tried increasing the JAVA_POOL_SIZE but does not work. I am not sure whether I am changing the correct parameter.
    I have read that the SAX API does not hog memory resources since it does not build the entire DOM tree structure. But the problem is that it does not have a PL/SQL implementation.
    Can anyone PLEASE guide me in the right direction, as to the best way to achieve this through PL/SQL ??? I have not designed the tables so am flexible on using purely relational or object-relational design. Although would prefer to keep a purely relational design. (Had tried used object-relational for 1. and purely relational for 2. above)
    The XML files are in the following format, (EXAMINEEs with single DEMOGRAPHIC and multiple TESTs)
    <?xml version="1.0"?>

    Thanks for the help.

    Please refer to the XSU(XML SQL Utility) or TransX Utility(for Multi-language Document) if you want to load data in XML format into database.
    Both of them require special XML formats, please first refer to the following docs:
    http://otn.oracle.com/docs/tech/xml/xdk_java/doc_library/Production9i/doc/java/xsu/xsu_userguide.html
    http://otn.oracle.com/docs/tech/xml/xdk_java/doc_library/Production9i/doc/java/transx/readme.html
    You can use XSLT to transform your document to the required format.
    If you document is large, you can use SAX method to insert data into database. But you need to write the code.
    The following sample may be useful:

  • Problem finding data in an Oracle Database using CMP beans

    I am having a problem retrieving data from an Oracle database that has a date as
    part of the key. This data was loaded into my database via a batch process writing
    in java using java.sql.Date to store the date information. When calling the findByPrimaryKey
    method of a CMP Entity Bean I continued to get the FinderException. I know this
    data is in my database because I can view the data via SQLPlus and Microsoft Access.
    Has anyone ever experience problems with CMP beans accessing data from an Oracle
    database that had a date as part if the key or with accessing data in the database
    that insert via another method outside of your CMP bean. I desperately need some
    answers.

    Hi Dave,
    You should probably post this type of question in the CMP or JDBC section
    for best results. Chances are that the date is suffering from a rounding
    problem (it could be a date/time in the database with a different time zone)
    or is not the date that you think it is (wrong century or millenium). I've
    seen both. You need to write a quick piece of code that loads in those
    values as both Java timestamps and dates and makes sure that they are what
    you think they are.

    Hi.
    I have a problem this load XML data. For example: file name:
    01-05-2008.xml => in this file all data have date=01.05.2008.
    Once i load period 01.05.2008 to 10.05.2008 my app load 10 files.
    Sometimes some row this greater date stay earlier then row this
    smaller date. I don't know why this happend. Bellow part of code.
    Please help.
    P.S. sorry for my very bad english.

    Hi Lekser,
    ntsii is totally right.
    Calling httpservice send is a async operation, which means
    you don´t know when the result event of such operation will
    return.
    You can also sort your grid after a xml data file was loaded.
    At least it would guarantee that the entries appear in the
    right order.

  • SQL Loader fails loading XML data enclosed by tag not found

    The problem I'm having is my XML tree doesn't contain all possible elements. In this example the second entry doesn't contain <age> - only the first entry will be added to the database
    Any idea of how I could solve this?
    The fields are saved as varchar2
    XML:
    <rowset>
    <row>
    <name>Name</name>
    <age>Age</age>
    <city>City</city>
    </row>
    <row>
    <name>Name2</name>
    <city>City2</city>
    </row>
    </rowset>
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE 'data.xml' "str '</row>'"
    APPEND
    INTO TABLE test
    TRAILING NULLCOLS
    dummy FILLER terminated BY "<row>",
    name ENCLOSED BY "<name>" AND "</name>",
    age ENCLOSED BY "<age>" AND "</age>",
    city ENCLOSED BY "<city>" AND "</city>"
    )

    I noticed that failure occurs when using 11g version SQL Loader. It doesn't fail when using 10g version SQL Loader.
    Delimited source data comes from:

  • ClickOnce WinForms Application to retrieve data from an Oracle Database

    I am hoping someone can help us.
    We are trying to create a ClickOnce WinForms Application that will allow our Customer Service group to retrieve data from an Oracle Database.
    We are currently able to use such a ClickOnce WinForms Application to allow our Customer Service group to retrieve data from SQL Server 2000 databases and even to a PICK Basic database. We use ole db drivers for these connections and keep the connection strings in a configuration file.
    Our primary question now is:
    1) What files would be needed on each client machine?
    Thanks for any pointers.
    :) Anne

    The problem has been fixed.
    If you wanna to load data from Oracle DB,the connect String should be like this:
    cnss.open "Provider=OraOLEDB.Oracle.1;data source=orcl;User Id=fdmitf;Password=fdmitf"
    besides, you should assign a value (True/False) to your function, as TonyScalese said in this post:
    Import from RDB Fails with "Error:Import failed.Invalid data or Empty..."
    Problem solved is always a great joy! Thanks!

  • XML Data Type in oracle

    I am a developer in .NET with having experience working on SQL server.
    I want to know whether there is an xml data type in oracle.
    I have an xml in my front end and want to insert record in the database for the values inside that xml. What i am doing currently is that i am retreiving the value in the xml in the .NET code and passing the values a parameter to a stored procedure in oracle. what i want to do is to pass the xml directly to stored procedure in oracle and retrieve the values there (using Xquery) and insert the records.
    This is possible with SQL server 2005. I want to know is this possible with Oracle.
    Thanks and regards,
    Sameer J Narkar

    Wonderful - a documentation question!
    You will find your answer by going to the general documentation portal at http://tahiti.oracle.com following the path to the database version of interest, and looking in the SQL Reference manual. Chapter 2 discusses all data types, including the several supported for XML.
    In addition, under the 'Books' tab, there are several XML-developer specific reference manuals.
    (Oracle's support for XML generally blows away the others. The price for the extreme flexibility is an ease-of-use hit.)

  • Loading XML data in Utilities

    I need to load some XML data into a staging table.
    I am using this navigation path...
    Home>Utilities>Data Load/Unload>Load>Load XML Data
    The staging table is setup with the columns in the XML file.
    I am receiving this error when I attempt to load the XML file:
    ORA-31011: XML parsing failed ORA-19202: Error occurred in XML processing LPX-00222: error received from SAX callback function
    I'm not sure that I have the correct columns in the table to match the XML file.
    Is there any documentation describing what columns should be in the table I am loading the XML data into?
    Many Thanks,

  • Flex 4 - is it possible to load xml data into the preloader and pass it to the application?

    or is there a similar method to load XML data while the preloader is active, so the XML data will be ready when the main application loads?

    i'm having great difficulty finding any relevant info from the forum and the web about accessing preloader variables from the application.
    is there a way to access the preloader itself from the application?
    It seems logical that the systemManager garbage collects it. If that's the case, how can i access the systemManager from the preloader and possible pass variables to it, then later access them from the application? this seems to be the best direction to tackle this problem. but maybe i'm overlooking another way?

  • How to use Load XML Data (Home Utilities Data Load/Unload Load)

    How is Load XML Data (Home>Utilities>Data Load/Unload>Load) supposed to work? Where is this documented?
    What table type/structure is required?
    How does this related to XDB functionality?

    It's not really documented that well in the XE redux documents (or even the base Apex Documents)- see http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/appdev.102/b25309/sql_utl.htm#sthref2530
    However, it's reasonably easy to use - you can export a table to XML format, and then reload the table with the data by importing the XML document. It has nothing to do with XDB, it's just a different flat file representation for unloaded data than CSV
