Local Storage in SQL Server 2012 (Fast Track Appliance)

Hello,
Before procuring the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Fast Track Appliance, we require additional information to satisfy the requirements from our infrastructure staff.  What type of data is stored in the local storage?  It seems that the local storage
may be used for computations functionality only (temporary tables etc?); therefore, the only system backups that we may need to perform are for the main server and spare server which also contains all computation nodes (each SQL Server 2012 instance running
on virtual machines?).  In fact, we probably don’t need any backups since the spare server provides a fail-over mechanism and allows for our engineers to “repair” any issues on the problem server? Also, If all of our data is already on a separate system
outside of this data warehouse and can simply be exported back to the PDW system, then perhaps we don’t require backups? We simply use this data warehouse for analysis of the data (query and reporting).  The data collection and maintenance are permanently
stored on a separate system.
One last question, if required – could we remove the local storage and replace it with our enterprise SANs? – likely a performance hit; however, may still be better than having to integrate separate hardware components to try to replicate the fast track
appliance and attempt to tune for performance.  Our infrastructure policy requires the use of enterprise SANs and reduction in local storage (possibly from new data center consolidation policies).
Thank you for helping us to decide quickly and purchase this Fast Track Appliance expeditiously to meet our rapidly approaching deadline.  I have been unable to find answers to these questions from Microsoft pre-sales and tech support staff (without
a support contract).
Thank you,
Vinh

Hello,
Thank you for the question.
If the data in the local storage can be extracted from the PDW again, we don't need to backup them.
As for the storage replacement, technically speaking, you can replace the local storage with the different SANs. However, if you do so, you will lead the system to a nonsupport scenario.
Please refer http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh918452.aspx for further information.

    Hi SQLDBA321,
As your post, SQL Server 2012 or higher version has removed that requirement of virtual local area network (VLAN). For more details, please review this similar blog:

    thanks a lot!

    Hi
First thing to check if windows is activated.
Secondly if the first option is valid then add the following registry keys:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Bootstrap] "BootstrapDir"="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Bootstrap\Setup] "PatchLevel"="11.00.2100.60"
Then copy from the media / temp setup directory following files / folder into C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2012
    x64 folder, resources folder, setup.exe.
    Change to x86 when necessary.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • Change Tracking System in SQL Server 2012

    Hi,
I have enabled change tracking to one of the database with retention period 1 day and auto clean is true. As per this setting changed data of one day old should get cleaned up automatically. But i am able to see 4 days
old data also using CHANGETABLE function. Let me know is there any other setting or is this an issue in SQL server 2012 which quires some patch?
SQL Server configuration: SQL Server 2012, Enterprise Edition, 64 bit.

  • Change Tracking internals behave differently, SQL Server 2012 vs SQL Server 2008

    <original post by Glenn Estrada>
Reposting an issue from Stack Overflow that a coworker and I are dealing with.
In trouble shooting an issue with synchronizing disconnected devices with a central database server using Sync Framework 1.0, we are experiencing a problem after upgrading to SQL Server 2012 on the server. It appears that the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION
is returning a value 1 higher than it should (or at least than it did prior to the upgrade.)
I have been working thru Arshad
Ali's great walk thru example of how to set up a simple example.
I have run the scripts from #1 thru #5 to insert, delete, and update a row in the Employee table in both a SQL Server 2008 and a 2012 environment.
In 2008, the following statement returns a 0:
    SELECT CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION(OBJECT_ID('Employee'))
    In 2012, it returns a 1.
In working thru a few more scripts (6-8) in the tests, I set the retention period to 1 minute to hopefully force a cleanup action. I left for the day and apparently it ran overnight.
In the 2008 instance, the CHANGE_TRACKING_CURRENT_VERSION and the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION are equal (11). In the 2012 instance, the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION is one higher (12) than the CHANGE_TRACKING_CURRENT_VERSION (11). This could have
an impact to the synchronization process when a database is idle for extended periods of time. And we have found that process could get caught in a loop, especially when the following test is performed to determine if a re-initialization, as opposed to synchronization,
    is required:
    IF CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION(object_id(N'dbo.Employee')) > @sync_last_received_anchor
RAISERROR (N'SQL Server Change Tracking has cleaned up tracking information for table ''%s''...
Has anyone else experienced this change in behavior? Does anyone have an explanation?

  • SQL server 2012 does not see local disks other than C being started under domain account (which is local admin on the server)

Hi all. We have a SQL Server 2012 installed to a fresh Windows Server 2012 Server. There is a service account domain\rusystem01 created to run SQL services. It is added as a Local administrator on this server.
The issue is that SQL Server does not see any local drives (other than C drive) on the server if we run it from this domain service account (for example, we cannot move any databases to any other drives or setup backup).
It works fine (and other drives ARE available) if SQL Services are started from Network service account or Local service account (which is not recommended by Microsoft). But does not work from domain account.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    MCP

    >Any ideas how to fix this?
Apply NTFS ACLs for the folders (and perhaps volumes*) for SQL Server.  Use the Per-Service SID, rather than the Service Account for the ACLs so they survive changing the service account.
The per-service SID is "NT Service\MSSQLSERVER" for a default instance and "NT Service\MSSQL$InstanceName" for a named instance.
*Volume ACLs are set in Disk Management.

    David http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dbrowne/
David, would you please clarify what do you propose? I open D: volume on the Disk management and grant NT Service\MSSQL$DEV account with Full control permissions. Restarted SQL - no effect. Still only C: is visible for SQL.

  • Usage Tracking Error on Microsoft SQL Server 2012 RCU

During an upgrade to 11.1.1.7.131017 recently, I ran into the following error in nqserver.log when trying to implement Usage Tracking on a MS SQL Server 2012 RCU DB:

  • SQL Server 2012 Infrastructure Best Practice

    Hi,
I would welcome some pointers (direct advice or pointers to good web sites) on setting up a hosted infrastructure for SQL Server 2012. I am limited to using VMs on a hosted site. I currently have a single 2012 instance with DB, SSIS, SSAS on the same server.
I currently RDP onto another server which holds the BI Tools (VS2012, SSMS, TFS etc), and from here I can create projects and connect to SQL Server.
Up to now, I have been heavily restricted by the (shared tenancy) host environment due to security issues, and have had to use various local accounts on each server. I need to put forward a preferred environment that we can strive towards, which is relatively
scalable and allows me to separate Dev/Test/Live operations and utilise Windows Authentication throughout.
Any help in creating a straw man would be appreciated.
Some of the things I have been thinking through are:
    1. Separate server for Live Database, and another server for Dev/Test databases
    2. Separate server for SSIS (for all 3 environments)
    3. Separate server for SSAS (not currently using cubes, but this is a future requirement. Perhaps do not need dedicated server?)
    4. Separate server for Development (holding VS2012, TFS2012,SSMS etc). Is it worth having local SQL Server DB on this machine. I was unsure where SQL Server Agent Jobs are best run from i.e. from Live Db  only, from another SQL Server Instance, or to
utilise SQL ServerAgent  on all (Live, Test and Dev) SQL Server DB instances. Running from one place would allow me to have everything executable from one place, with centralised package reporting etc. I would also benefit from some license cost
    reductions (Kingsway tools)
    5. Separate server to hold SSRS, Tableau Server and SharePoint?
    6. Separate Terminal Server or integrated onto Development Server?
    7. I need server to hold file (import and extract) folders for use by SSIS packages which will be accessible by different users
I know (and apologise that) I have given little info about the requirement. I have an opportunity to put forward my requirement for x months into the future, and there is a mass of info out there which is not distilled in a way I can utilise. It would
be helpful to know what I should aim for, in terms of separate servers for the different services and/or environments (Live/Test/Live), and specifically best practice for where SQL Server Agent jobs should be run from , and perhaps a little info on how to
best control deployment/change control . (Note my main interest is not in application development, it is in setting up packages to load/refresh data marts fro reporting purposes).
    Many thanks,
    Ken

    Hello,
On all cases, consider that having a separate server may increase licensing or hosting costs.
Please allow to recommend you Windows Azure for cloud services.
    Answers.
This is always a best practice.
Having SSIS on a separate server allows you isolate import/export packages, but may increase network traffic between servers. I don’t know if your provider charges
money for incoming traffic or outgoing traffic.
SSAS on a separate server certainly a best practice too.
It contributes to better performance and scalability.
SQL Server Developer Edition cost about $50 dollars only. Are you talking about centralizing job scheduling on an on-premises computer than having jobs enable on a
cloud service? Consider PowerShell to automate tasks.
If you will use Reporting Services on SharePoint integrated mode you should install Reporting Services on the same server where SharePoint is located.
SQL Server can coexist with Terminal Services with the exception of clustered environments.
SSIS packages may be competing with users for accessing to files. Maybe copying them to a disk resource available for the SSIS server may be a better solution.
A few more things to consider:
Performance storage subsystem on the cloud service.
How Many cores? How much RAM?
Creating a Domain Controller or using active directory services.
    These resources may be useful.

  • SQL Server 2012 Express Install on Windows 7 SP1 Embedded not using virtual account?

    Hi there,
I did a default installation of SQL Server 2012 Express on Windows 7 embedded Standard SP1.
When I look at the SQLSERVER service credential it is configured to run under "NETWORK SERVICE" instead of the virtual account "NT SERVICE\MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS".
This is different from SQL 2012 Express installation on a non-embedded Windows 7.
    Why is this difference?
Secondly, because of this, I am unable to take a backup of databases to any folder other than the default SQL folder.

    Hi Chandrasekaran,
As Local Service account, the Network Service account and high privileged Local System account could be used by many services.
It becomes harder to track which service is actually accessing resources and performing actions, because all the services are using the one Network Service account or other account.
In Windows7 and Windows Server 2008R2, it introduces a new type of account called a virtual account, which emulates creating many unique instances of the Network Service account, so each service runs with its own instance of the Network Service account.
For example, when you install SQL 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 and later you’ll see the services run with virtual service accounts named like:
    in the format NT SERVICE\<SERVICENAME>.
According to your description, when the SQLSERVER service was run under “NETWORK SERVICE”, you only back up database to the default SQL folder. It may be caused by the NETWORK SERVICE account has limited local privileges, just accesses network
resource with the computer credential. I recommend you change the account to Local System account, by default, which has full permissions on your computer.
For more information about SQL Server service account and virtual account, you can review the following articles.

  • SQL server 2012 - Database Availability Group

We have 2 new Servers ready to be deployed as Database Servers for Sharepoint 2013.
both server have 1TB RAID 5 Hard Disk Space.
We don't have any kind of Shared Storage/SAN etc & we cannot afford to buy this.

  • SQL Server 2012 Multi-Site clustering with 2 nodes for HA and DR

Usually we setup 2 Node Prod cluster for Local HA and 1 or 2 Nodes in other data centre for DR
Given that we have an option to setup multi-site / multi-subnet clustering from SQL 2008 R2/2012. I am planning to use just 2 nodes, 1 in prod data centre and 1 in DR data centre with 2 or 3 instances. This will act as both HA and DR solution.
I would like to know if this solution is good, and any disadvantages, any best practices, etc.? By implementing this I can save some cost on physical servers.
    Following will be configured:
    * Will be using different subnets, quorum on different server with "Node and File Share Majority"
    * All virtual IPs will be registered for virtual name, and Subnetdelay, Subnet threshold will be modified accordingly
    * All nodes on same domain
    * Use SAN Disk with replication to DR site

SQL 2008 R2 doesn't support multi-subnet clustering. You would still need 3rd party component like VLAN and Disk Replication. SQL 2012 is the first version to support multi-subnet clustering without using VLAN. you would still need disk replication hardware/software.
    Taken from my book
Since nodes are often located in two different data centers at geographically dispersed locations, there is no shared storage between the nodes in a multi-site cluster. Clustering across two different data centers provides a higher level of availability and
protection at the storage level as we have more than a single copy of the data.
For SAN replication technology implemented in such clusters, the main activity is to keep data replicated between the sites. Typically, if we have nodes on two different sites, we would have two different network infrastructures and the nodes would be in
different subnets. In such cases, if we are on a SQL Server version before 2012, we need to use third party VLAN (Virtual LAN) technology so that one IP address travels between two sites. This is called wide-IP. Companies hesitate with this solution because
of the need to buy a third party solution to deploy the VLAN. Using VLAN technology means the same IP address would failover to the remote site in case of a local site disaster. Network administration might consider this as an overhead to maintenance and an
extra piece of the networking component that needs to be secure.
With SQL Server 2012 we do not need to use stretch VLAN technology but SAN replication is still needed for multi-site clustering. The OS version for this can be from Windows Server 2008 R2 and above. In this deployment, we can have a SQL virtual network
name having an “OR” dependency on two different IP addresses. One address would be representing each subnet. With the “OR” dependency, if IP1 or IP2 is online we just use the network name. This is one of the Enterprise Editions only features.
Other option which you can think of, without using 3rd party solutions would be AlwaysOn Availability Group. I have written details about it in my book.

  • SQL Server 2012 SE install time

I installed SQL 2012 SE on a couple of VM's built on HyperVservers. Both the Hypervserver hosts are different. So when the VM's inherited the properties these are the configurations:
    VM1:
    Memory: 32GB
    OS:Windows Server 2008 R2 EE SP1
    Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU L7555 @1.87GHz
    VM2:
    Memory: 32GB
    OS:Windows Server 2008 R2 EE SP1
    Processor:Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5649 @2.53GHz
Both the VM's are freshly built this morning SQL Server installation took like 105 Minutes on VM1 and 45 Minutes on VM2. On Both VM's the ISO's were copied locally and installed. My question is why did the installation take so long on a L-series processors
versus E-Series. The E-series is like 4 generations behind.
Is it because of the processor speed?
Experts Need your valuable inputs. Thanks .

    Hi,
Based on your description, many factors can affect the performance when you install SQL Server 2012 on a virtual machine, including the processor speed.
    According to this article:
Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2012, it is recommended to use a CPU which processor speed is 2.0 GHz or faster when installing SQL Server 2012, as a faster CPU can  speed your operating system and optimize the installation
    performance of SQL Server.

  • Unable to install SQL Server 2012 Developer

I have a problem with installing SQL Server 2012 (no matter which edition I choose). Installation usually runs well, but near the end shows up an error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 Setup
    The following error has occurred:
Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server error log for potential causes.
    For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&ProdVer=11.0.3128.0&EvtType=0xD15B4EB2%25400x4BDAF9BA%25401306%254026
    BUTTONS:
    OK
The help link points to not-existing article on MSDN page. After I click OK button, the installation reaches it's end and shows up another, which tells, that Database Engine Services, Reporting Services - Native, Data Quality Services, Full-Text and Semantic
Extractions for Search and SQL Server Replication failed to install.
After that I am able to start, for example SQL Management Studio, but cannot connect to database. Also services of SQL Server (Server, Server Agent, Full-text Filter, Reporting Services) are stopped and I am not able to start them manually (any try throws an
error: "The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details").
I tried complete reinstalling of SQL Server, cleaning registry entries, different editions of that software - none method helped. Also, I tried the .iso images of installation media on other computers - it worked well and installed without any errors. My OS
    is Windows 8.1 x64.

    Hello,
Please uninstall SQL server completely from add remove program.Make sure you uninstall it completely
Now right click on Setup.exe file which is there in SQL Server installable and select run as administrator to start installation.
On page where you are asked to provide startup account for SQL Server service select NT Authority\System or Local System account.
This issue is basically after installation SQL Server is not able to bring online database services using account which you selected .Local system account will allow it to come online
After installation change startup account to domain account with least privilege
    Hope this helps

  • Unable to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 SP1

I'm encountering error after error, after successfully installing the upgrade advisor (which took some doing) and running it with essentially no warnings/errors (the one warning was on the connection strings, as I recall -- and all of the warnings had a
    "fix after" status.
First failure involved SSRS and the inability to create the "managed account". Backed out the upgrade using http://sqldbanotes.blogspot.com/2013/10/how-to-fix-failed-in-place.html
Now the failure involves SSAS and unable to connect to analysis services with name MSSQLServerOLAPService.  That is the logical name for the service, although it shows up as just MSSQLServer when looking at it in the services list.  I tried
setting the service account to a local account as  well as to Local System -- did not make a difference, the upgrade couldn't apparently find it regardless.
Has anybody successfully done an in place upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012?

file 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.BNG1SECISO\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf'.  Additional messages in the SQL Server error log or system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe error condition that threatens database integrity and
must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online.
