SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn for Multi-subnet geographical HA solution steps -- NON-Shared storage, standalone servers

1.Can any one provide the detailed steps for multi-subnet HA for Always ON Groups.
--SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn  for Multi-subnet geographical HA solution steps
2.Do we need VLAN or not for SQL Server 2012 on win 2012 ? provide details for this VLAN required or not.
--I read MS links, sql server 2012 and above VLAN not required.
Env:
SQL Server 2012
Windows 2012 R2(2  servers different location)
Non-Shared storage (stand-alone servers)
Always ON Availability Group
I have seen white papers, but did not have detail step by steps.
Thanks

Hi SQLDBA321,
As your post, SQL Server 2012 or higher version has removed that requirement of virtual local area network (VLAN). For more details, please review this similar blog:
What you need for a Multi Subnet Configuration for AlwaysOn FCI in SQL Server 2012.
And you can perform the steps in the following similar blog to set up an AlwaysOn Availability Group with multiple subnets.

  • Is it possible to set up sql server 2012 alwayson AG for existing scom2012 r2 databases?

we have an existing scom 2012 r2 management group of which all databases are on a single sql server 2012 sp1 instance on a server 2012 r2 server. Now we want to utilize the sql 2012 alwayson feature to improve the HA and DR. Is it possible to add another
sql server 2012 sp1 instance on another server 2012 r2 server and configure the two to create AlwaysOn Availability Group for all three scom databases, and how?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
Microsoft recommends dedicated SQL clusters for the DBs. If you are trying to achive a common backend SQL for your SC 2012 DBs; check this great post by Cameron Fuller:
http://www.systemcentercentral.com/system-center-2012using-a-common-sql-backend-database-sysctr-scom-scsm/ – it should give you some pointers. Check out the SCOM 2012 sizing helper as well!
We can set scom 2012 databases in SQL cluster and install SCOM Report Service on different SQL Report Server intance. And RS instance cannot be clustered but can be HA. Failover clustering is supported only for the report server database; you cannot run
the Report Server service as part of a failover cluster.

  • Can DPM 2012 R2 backup SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn enabled databases

Is it possible to use DPM 2012 R2 for backing up
SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn enabled databases ?
Because if Alwayson configured for any Database , particular database is not available to select for backup.

    Hi,
Yes, starting with DPM 2012 SP1 SQL AlwaysOn enabled databases can be protected as long as they are not part of sharepoint farm. DPM shows the Availability Groups under Cluster Group.
You must explicitly add the system account NTAuthority\System or NT AUTHORITY\DPMRA to the Sysadmin group on SQL Server.

  • SQL Server 2012 AlwaysON Monitoring using SCOM

    Team,
We have SCOM deployed and is serving as a monitoring solution for our SQL Estate. However I want some pointers to monitor the health of DBs within Avaialibility Group like DB Sync, log queue etc. Please direct me with the AlwaysOn health parameters that
    can be monitored by SCOM.
I have confirmed with SCOM admin that we have the latest management pack installed for SQL 2012 and currently its getting monitored. However we are not seeing any alerts though.
    Your inputs are highly appreciated.

  • SQL Server 2012 Multi-Site clustering with 2 nodes for HA and DR

Usually we setup 2 Node Prod cluster for Local HA and 1 or 2 Nodes in other data centre for DR
Given that we have an option to setup multi-site / multi-subnet clustering from SQL 2008 R2/2012. I am planning to use just 2 nodes, 1 in prod data centre and 1 in DR data centre with 2 or 3 instances. This will act as both HA and DR solution.
I would like to know if this solution is good, and any disadvantages, any best practices, etc.? By implementing this I can save some cost on physical servers.
    Following will be configured:
    * Will be using different subnets, quorum on different server with "Node and File Share Majority"
    * All virtual IPs will be registered for virtual name, and Subnetdelay, Subnet threshold will be modified accordingly
    * All nodes on same domain
    * Use SAN Disk with replication to DR site

SQL 2008 R2 doesn't support multi-subnet clustering. You would still need 3rd party component like VLAN and Disk Replication. SQL 2012 is the first version to support multi-subnet clustering without using VLAN. you would still need disk replication hardware/software.
    Taken from my book
Since nodes are often located in two different data centers at geographically dispersed locations, there is no shared storage between the nodes in a multi-site cluster. Clustering across two different data centers provides a higher level of availability and
protection at the storage level as we have more than a single copy of the data.
For SAN replication technology implemented in such clusters, the main activity is to keep data replicated between the sites. Typically, if we have nodes on two different sites, we would have two different network infrastructures and the nodes would be in
different subnets. In such cases, if we are on a SQL Server version before 2012, we need to use third party VLAN (Virtual LAN) technology so that one IP address travels between two sites. This is called wide-IP. Companies hesitate with this solution because
of the need to buy a third party solution to deploy the VLAN. Using VLAN technology means the same IP address would failover to the remote site in case of a local site disaster. Network administration might consider this as an overhead to maintenance and an
extra piece of the networking component that needs to be secure.
With SQL Server 2012 we do not need to use stretch VLAN technology but SAN replication is still needed for multi-site clustering. The OS version for this can be from Windows Server 2008 R2 and above. In this deployment, we can have a SQL virtual network
name having an “OR” dependency on two different IP addresses. One address would be representing each subnet. With the “OR” dependency, if IP1 or IP2 is online we just use the network name. This is one of the Enterprise Editions only features.
Other option which you can think of, without using 3rd party solutions would be AlwaysOn Availability Group. I have written details about it in my book.

  • Maintenance plan for SQL Server 2012 Database in AlwaysOn Availability Group

    Hi all,
I need assistance creating a maintenance plan that will backup a databases logs in order to prevent them from filling up the drive they are located on. I have looked at some blogs but they do not specifically show how this is done.
My database is in an AlwaysOn Availability Group.
Thank you very much for your help!

    Hi all,

My database is in an AlwaysOn Availability Group.
Regular maintenance plan would work. Only thing to remember is that when you create log backup plan, there is a checkbox which says whether it should honor backup preference or not.

  • Bug in SQL Server 2008 R2 for Change Data Capture (CDC)

I'm pretty sure I've encountered a bug in SQL Server 2008 R2 that's been fixed in 2012, regarding changing the design of a database using CDC.  With CDC disabled on a table with sys.sp_cdc_disable_table, I can add a column or change a column's data
type, but when I call sp_rename, on 2008 R2 I'm getting "Cannot alter column 'xxx' because it is 'REPLICATED'.", even though the table's properties shows "Table is replicated" as False.  In 2012, works fine.
Even calling sys.sp_cdc_disable_db didn't prevent this error.

Feel free to file a request on http://connect.microsoft.com

  • SQL server 2012 - Database Availability Group

We have 2 new Servers ready to be deployed as Database Servers for Sharepoint 2013.
both server have 1TB RAID 5 Hard Disk Space.
We don't have any kind of Shared Storage/SAN etc & we cannot afford to buy this.
I have Configured Windows Server Fail-over Cluster with File Share Quorum.
May i Configure the SQL Database 2012 on Each Server on local disk and then make High Availability Groups?

  • Perform Forced Manual Failover of Availability Group (SQL Server 2012) and WSFC (Windows Server Failover Cluster)

I have a scenario with the three nodes with server 2012 standard, each running an instance of SQL Server 2012 enterprise, participate in a
single Windows Server Fail-over Cluster (WSFC) that spans two data centers.
If the nodes in the primary data center are unavailable due to data center outage. Then how I can able to access node in the WSFC (Windows Server Fail-over Cluster) in the secondary disaster recovery data center automatically with some script.
I want to write script that can be able to check primary data center by pinging some IP after every 5 or 10 minutes.
If that IP is unable to respond then script can be able to Perform Forced Manual Fail-over of Availability Group (SQL Server) and WSFC (Windows Server Fail-over Cluster)
Can you please guide me for script writing for automatic fail-over in case of primary data-center outage?

+1 to David's comment. I would not suggest to run a script automatically. During such failover you might have data loss and decision has to be made with business owners during disaster.
During such situation, you need to start cluster service in force quorum mode (/fq switch) and then perform manual failover of AG to DR site.
