Locale-gen and illegal seek

When I try to do "locale -a" for both regular user and root, I get this:
# locale -a
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
C
POSIX
And when I try to do "locale-gen" when "en_US.UTF-8     UTF-8" is uncommented from <i>/etc/locale.gen</i>, I get this:
# locale-gen
Generating locales...
en_US.UTF-8...default character map file `ANSI_X3.4-1968' not found: Illegal seek
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask for help or should it be in the noob section. I'm guessing I'm starting to get this trouble after I've updated glibc since locale has been working perfectly fine before. ANSI_X3.4-1968.gz is in <i>/usr/share/i18n/charmaps/</i> and I've also tried "pacman -Sy glibc", but no succes. Any ideas?

sounds like it could be glibc. Have you tried downgrading it? If you haven't already deleted it, it should be in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/. Use the -U switch to pacman plus that full path whatever it is.

  • Locale.gen and echoing LANG=es_US.UTF8 UTF-8 || Why "LANG"???

I noticed in the beginner tutorial during the locale-gen area it gives you some options.
EDIT!!! all es_US is really en_US. In bash I never typed es_US. So I changed my code examples from es_US to en_US
NOTE!! I am in learning mode so I am purposly messing with things. I have already got Arch Linux up and running... I am purposely breaking things to fix them.
First, I ran nano and looked at the locale.gen file and saw that it had a huge list.
    then I ran
    echo LANG=en_US.UTF-8 > /etc/locale.gen
When I saw what happened other than being WOWed by learning what echo does. I saw that the locale.gen replaced the entire file with "LANG=es_US.UTF-8" and on top of that locale-gen has an error with the code.
    I would prefer this
    echo en_US.UTF-8 UTF 8 >> /etc/locale.gen
So does the beginner guide have an error? Because "LANG=" was never in the locale file to begin with and just uncommenting leaves "en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8" NOT "en_US.UTF-8"
    Thank you for your time!

I did not tell you what the error was... that was my fault. The error went away with me fixing locale.gen to locale.conf.
Ranman: I have gone over the locale.conf wiki. Really what is hard is, when the wiki explains one thing, it explains it almost another language that I, yet again, have to look up something else. So I am hoping my question can be just treated as a simple question.
I can appreciate the intense amount of questions you get from people who do not read or care to take the time. However, I am not that guy. So can you please quit telling me to do research. Please read my whole post, I went through the beginner guide-Many times! It does not tell me what the difference between these two files are.
Yes locale.conf is in the wiki, but locale.gen is NOT. So if it is ok, see my next question...
That brings me to the next question. What is the difference of locale.conf and locale.gen?
if I run locale-gen that will pull the uncommented line and set it as language?
Or if I chose to use the echo to locale.conf
and export LANG=en_US... does this do the same thing?

  • Locale-gen command not found

    Hi everyone
I just completed a new installation of Arch on my netbook, everything was working fine but there is a problem I can not solve.
I managed to set everything as I wanted and put the language of my XFCE and Firefox in Spanish, but then (I do not know exactly when) all programs returned to English.
I already check the rc.conf configuration and locale.gen and everything is set for Spanish, but when I try "sudo locale-gen" I recive a message like this: "sudo: locale-gen: command not found"
I also have problems with the keyboard, I configured xorg and rc.conf to use spanish keymap but it didn't work
    Any ideas?

TigTex wrote:I made one arch install that has this problem... locale-gen doesnt work (for example) but it's full path works. How do I re-set the PATH variable?
All the problems I had with the PATH, keyboard and using other language than english had solved when I stop using autostart X in inittab , if I login to the terminal and start X myself, then everything works fine.
I am still looking for a way to start XFCE at boot without having to enter my username or password and not having the problems I told (CDM looks like the better way )

  • [SOLVED] locale-gen, nano, sed not available in arch-chroot

Both the Installation Guide and the Beginner's version say to use arch-chroot before configuring. However, when I try to do this, I no longer have access to the commands I need to do the configuration (e.g. sh: nano: command not found). I can use nano from outside of the chroot, but AFAIK locale-gen needs to be run inside, and it relies on sed which is also not present.
I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up before-- have I done something wrong?
EDIT: mkinitcpio is also not available while in arch-chroot

Whef wrote:Did you use pacstrap to install the base system (and anything else you want) on your install (usually /mnt) before chrooting? Otherwise, it won't be able to access the resources from the regular install media because it will be outside of the chroot environment.
Hmmm no I did not do this, nor did I see any mention of it on the install guide. It just says to arch-chroot then (after editing a few files) run locale-gen and mkinitcpio, neither of which are accessible within the chroot'd shell.

  • "illegal seek", what does that mean and how do i fix it?

i keep on getting an error message on my mac that says "illegal seek", what does that mean?

Unsure where are you receiving this error message?  What operating system are you using?

  • Ipod nano 2nd gen and dock/alarm clock

i have read through alot of the posts and have not seen anything similar to my question.
i got my daughter an ipod nano for xmas.
we really dont leave the computer on alot and she was wanting a docking station/speaker setup. i found one that charges it/ has speakers and is also an alarm clock.
she likes the idea of having the alarm clock with it.
this is the model she got: curtis iMode ip210 link to where it was bought http://hhgregg.com/ProductDetail.asp?SID=0B568914D18A4CBEB2E80A95E8C46043&Produc tID=17180
we have not hooked it up yet because of a small problem maybe. (hooked up to power that is)
it came with a bunch of different adapters for the different ipod versions. well the nano one is incorrect. i guess due to ours being a 2nd gen version.
the ipod goes right on the dock fine with out it.
the little plastic adapter i got with the ipod kinda works in the slot of the radio but would need a little modification to snap in. the difference is the outside shape and would just needed some sanding. i have called the support number for the radio and all i could get from the was its not compatable. and i am not too sure why.
from what i have found out is all the ipod dock connectors are the same and there is no difference. not sure about this just what i have noticed.
i tried to call my local apple store and ask them but that guy started talking about firewire and problems. i told him how it docked and what it was and he still insisted on talking about firewire and those problems. i hung up as it didnt sound like he knew anything.
so now would i be ok in useing the adapter i got with the ipod and makeing some slight mods(sanding outside edge) to it. or is the something totally different between the 1st gen and 2nd gen that would mess up the ipod if put in this unit.
the reason i want this unit as it will replace her current alarm clock and she has a loft bed and its the only unit that we have seen that will fit and is in our price range.
    thank you for your help
    dawg
ipod nano 2nd gen   Windows XP

The dock adaptor that came with the iPod is meant to fit Apple's universal dock and not a 3rd party accessory.
The reason you are having issues is because although the dock connectors on iPods are all the same (the pins are in the same place), the connector on the second gen nano is in a slightly different place than on the first. If you look at it from the bottom with the iPod face up, it's slightly more to the left. This, and the fact that it has a metal case with rounded edges, has made the new nano incompatible with almost all these type of accessories.
It's been mentioned here several times, and a few people have been able to get the manufacturer of the dock to supply them with an adaptor.

  • Photoshop CS5 trial will not open - "illegal seek" message

I have Mac OS X 10.7.3 installed. The Adobe Download Assistant is stuck in extracting mode, which I can't seem to get rid of even after deleting the Adobe Download Assistant dmg and reinstalling it. Since I was not able to open the Photoshop CS5 dmg (I received the illegal seek message), I deleted it. I have tried redownloading the Adobe Download Assistant, but I can't seem to get it out of its extracting state. What do I do? I have tried 2 different internet connections also... since I saw that was recommended on someone else's post that had the same issue.
    Thanks

Can you try these steps and let us know if it helped. I got this information from the thread (http://forums.adobe.com/message/3980334)

  • Hello, I've just purchased apple tv, 3rd gen, and I'm streaming from my mac book pro to my tv, and it keeps skipping slightly, i have reasonably good internet speed, approx 7-8 Gb.

hi, my apple tv i have purchased which is 3rd gen, is skipping when i stream to my tv, I'm using the latest software on my mac book pro, which is approx 2 years old, my router is only a few months old, but i am using power line adapters, but i have no problem downloading or watching internet telly 4OD/YOUTUBE etc.
is their anything i can do as i have only  bought the apple tv for mainly streaming from my mac.
    thanks
    gary

If you are streaming from your Mac then your internet speed would be irrelevant. This is done over the local network, and that is where the issue lies.
    Reboot ATV and router
Make sure router is up to date
If Apple TV is connecting via wifi, connect with ethernet
Go to istumbler.net to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise

  • IPod Nano (6th gen) and Technogym treadmill

    Hi,
I have a 6th gen iPod Nano and I have been using it with nike+ for a while. In particular, I have been using the transmitter plugged in the ipod and the sensor in my nike shoe to track my running data and eventually upload it to nikeplus.com. Hence, I have one sensor linked.
Today, I went to my local gym and saw a Technogym treadmill with a big touchscreen and a possibility to dock an ipod. (I assume that the model of treadmill is a couple of years old, because it had a TV, fan, ipod support, etc., but no internet support. Here is the image of the exact treadmill - http://cityfitness.lv/upload/IMG_0452.JPG).
Moreover, I plugged in my 6th gen ipod nano. Set up and started a 5k run on the technogym treadmill. My ipods music was accessible on the technogym instantly. Also, I saw that during the workout the ipod's screen showed "Nike+. Workout data is recording" or something like that.
I did the 5k and finished the workout. I unplugged the iPod nano but my workout did not appear under Fitness - History. When I got home, I connected the ipod to iTunes, and the ordinary-afer-a-workout popup asking whether I want to send workout data to nikeplus appeard. I clicked yes. BUT, again, nikeplus.com does not show my technogym workout and neither does itunes.
The only thing appearing in iTunes, is a new sensor. Its name is "Gym User 1" or something like that.
So the question is. How can I get my 6th gen iPod Nano to fully work with technogym treadmill?
    Thanks,
    Reinis

    Hello mark0198,
I'm afraid not. Your computer must meet the minimum requirements.

  • [solved] locale-gen don't work

    Hi,
I've just got new Arch install but it seems there's some slight problems with locales. I enable few of them in /etc/locale.gen. To be exact:
    #en_SG.UTF-8 UTF-8
    #en_SG ISO-8859-1
    en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
    en_US ISO-8859-1
    #en_ZA.UTF-8 UTF-8
    #en_ZA ISO-8859-1
    #en_ZW.UTF-8 UTF-8
    #li_NL UTF-8
    #lo_LA UTF-8
    lt_LT.UTF-8 UTF-8
    lt_LT ISO-8859-13
    #lv_LV.UTF-8 UTF-8
    #lv_LV ISO-8859-13
    But when I run
    sudo locale-gen
    I get only
    Generating locales...
[edit].Setting system wide locale...Try `localedef --help' or `localedef --usage' for more information.
After that locale -a gives me only C and POSIX.
    Maybe I'm missing something?

    strange problem.
localedef seems to be a tool to build some locales
maybe something has gone wrong during the installation of locales.
    try to reinstall glibc :
    pacman -S glibc
and try again (you'll probably have to edit your /etc/locale.gen again)

I am getting the following error using locale-gen...

the only ones i un-commented in /etc/locale.gen are the en-us ones.  any thoughts on this one?

Sorry for responding to an old thread, but I have exactly the same problem of funkyou after having updated glibc to 2.5.2
    locale-gen

I've this in locale.gen (but even commenting or uncommenting other locales, it segfaults anyway)

I've already tried reinstalling glibc and rebooted a couple of times without any luck. Any idea?

  • Clean Install Lion Dsik Mount Problem - "(Illegal Seek)"

I'm trying to create a bootable USB so I can clean install Lion on my mac. However, when I try and burn the .dmg file onto my USB I get an error message along the lines of "Unable to create "installesd.dmg - (Illegal seek)".
The USB (4GB) is Mac formatted. I have tried using my Mac formatted iPod (60GB) as well but that doesn't work either.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

Hi Arun, have you migrated any data into your clean Lion installation yet? I'm curious to learn about the startup speed of such a clean installation.
While i simply updated from Snow Leopard i'm experiencing a significantly slowed-down startup. I wonder whether it's worth to start from scratch and first update to Lion and then manually install all my applications and data.
    Thank you.

  • Download error...Image: PhotoshopElements_10_WWEFDJ.dmj; reason: Illegal Seek

I attempted to download AdobePhotoshopElements about a week ago, but whenever I click on the download assistant it still says that it's extracting and an error message pops up saying, "The following disk couldn't be opened. Image: PhotoshopElements_10_WWEFDJ.dmj; reason: Illegal Seek." I was never able to open the trial version nor have I ever installed AdobePhotoshop Elements in the past. I have a MacBook Pro with Mac Os X version 10.6.8. Does anyone know where I went wrong during the free trial download process, and how I can resolve the problem so that I may use what's left of my 30-day trial?
    LRP

If the Adobe Download Assistant says it is still Extracting then this would be why you are receiving the message about the Illegal Seek.  I would recommend canceling the download and using the default location of your User folder.
Alternately you can utilize the steps listed in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/981369 to initiate a direct download.
