[solved] locale-gen don't work
Hi,
I've just got new Arch install but it seems there's some slight problems with locales. I enable few of them in /etc/locale.gen. To be exact:
#en_SG.UTF-8 UTF-8
#en_SG ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_US ISO-8859-1
#en_ZA.UTF-8 UTF-8
#en_ZA ISO-8859-1
#en_ZW.UTF-8 UTF-8
#li_NL UTF-8
#lo_LA UTF-8
lt_LT.UTF-8 UTF-8
lt_LT ISO-8859-13
#lv_LV.UTF-8 UTF-8
#lv_LV ISO-8859-13
But when I run
sudo locale-gen
I get only
Generating locales...
[edit].Setting system wide locale...Try `localedef --help' or `localedef --usage' for more information.
After that locale -a gives me only C and POSIX.
Maybe I'm missing something?

strange problem.
localedef seems to be a tool to build some locales
maybe something has gone wrong during the installation of locales.
try to reinstall glibc :
pacman -S glibc
and try again (you'll probably have to edit your /etc/locale.gen again)

My ipod shuffle (4th gen) don't works after hard reset with itunes
My ipod shuffle (4th gen) don't works after hard reset with itunes, it don't reads too like USB by Windows.
Before that i've seen error (-50) in iTunes, so i reset ipod.
I've read all tips on this site, but nothing helps me.No, USB works good. I've tried reset on my friend's PC, and it saw my ipod and reset was done. But when i tried to load music, it wrote me, that i've installed incorrect software.

[SOLVED] locale-gen, nano, sed not available in arch-chroot
Both the Installation Guide and the Beginner's version say to use arch-chroot before configuring. However, when I try to do this, I no longer have access to the commands I need to do the configuration (e.g. sh: nano: command not found). I can use nano from outside of the chroot, but AFAIK locale-gen needs to be run inside, and it relies on sed which is also not present.
I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up before-- have I done something wrong?
EDIT: mkinitcpio is also not available while in arch-chroot

Otherwise, it won't be able to access the resources from the regular install media because it will be outside of the chroot environment.
Hmmm no I did not do this, nor did I see any mention of it on the install guide. It just says to arch-chroot then (after editing a few files) run locale-gen and mkinitcpio, neither of which are accessible within the chroot'd shell. -

[Solved]Desktop-Terminals don't works
Hi
I use often desktop-terminals like gnome-terminal or konsole. Since friday no one works. if I start a desktop-terminal, the cursor appears, but I can't type anything and the prompt don't appears. I use the zsh with the configfiles from the grml-project(http://grml.org http://www.laber-land.de/2008/11/13/kur … att-bash/), but it don't work with the bash, too.
Last edited by linopolus (2009-02-04 12:48:20)Another idea: maybe they can't spawn their own pseudo-ttys? This would explain why you can log in after boot and run x and at the same time can't run terminal emulator. Is there some hint in your logs? A simple test also would be to log in console with x still running with some terminal emulator and issuing "w" command to see if somebody is logged-in on some "pts/0" or something terminal. If it's not then we have our suspect. If it is—maybe then it's authorization problem.

[SOLVED] Proxy settings don't work
Hi there
I hope I don't bother you with a topic that already came up that way.
While I was installing Arch Linux I had to use the proxy of our company, which worked for me.
After the installation I noticed that I had to reenter the command "export http_proxy='url_to_proxy'" again and again, but for pacman, it was working.
Not so for firefox, and after trying and working on it it doesn't work anywhere now.
Any idea?
With the command "export | grep -i http" I get the following lines:
declare -x ftp_proxy=url_to_proxy
declare -x http_proxy=url_to_proxy
I also put this into /etc/environment, which didn't help.
Hope you can help me.
Greetings
Kielo
EDIT//
I figured it out now..
1.) Write into /etc/profiles tthe following lines:
export HTTP_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
export HTTPS_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port

Last edited by Kielo (2010-10-08 13:53:09)Hi there
I hope I don't bother you with a topic that already came up that way.
1.) Write into /etc/profiles tthe following lines:
export HTTP_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
export HTTPS_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
export FTP_PROXY=url_to_proxy:port
2.) Go to System > Preferences > Network Proxy > "Manual Proxy Configuration"; Then (for me) check "Use the same proxy for all protocols"

[SOLVED] Menu Entries Don't Work In Syslinux
I installed and set up arch on a flash drive yesterday and it was working great.
Today, I tried to install gnome but I was getting two invalid signature errors from dependencies so I followed philm's advice to remove the pacman caches and ran:
sudo pacman -Syu
This seemed to update several things, including the kernel. pacman completed without any errors and I rebooted the machine, but now I'm stuck in syslinux, and can't get past the menu.
Selecting "Arch Linux" very quickly brings up a loading message and then the syslinux menu refreshes.
"Arch Linux Fallback" does nothing apparent.
I can access the hardware detection tool, but that's no help.
Even "Poweroff" gives an "APM not present" error.
The only option that does what it's supposed to is "Reboot."
Pressing tab reveals the command being run is:
> .linux ../vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=[redacted] rw initrd=../initramfs-linux.img
Pressing esc and typing arch at the "boot:" prompt gives:
Loading ../vmlinuz-linux... failed: No such file or directory
As I said I installed arch yesterday so I'm a complete n00b… any ideas of what I could try to fix this?
Last edited by josherick (2014-01-12 06:55:09)I redacted the UUID more because it was long and cumbersome to type than for security reasons, haha. It points to /dev/sda1, which is an ext4 partition and the only partition on the drive. When I edit the command and substitute the UUID for "/dev/sda1," the exact same thing happens (the menu "refreshes").
It's good to know that poweroff isn't expected to work.
I'll also add that since this is on a flash drive, I can access the entire drive from within another arch install I've got in VirtualBox, if that helps. I've done that and checked the /boot folder and all of the files it is referencing in the errors seem to be in place, although I noticed that /boot/vmlinuz-linux has a size of 0 bytes – is that to be expected or is there an issue here?
This was also working about 2 hours ago so I think it has something to do with updating the kernel

[Solved][Awesome]Keyboard don't work at startup
Hello.
I have the problem with awesome wm. I'm using git build 20120516-1 with default rc.lua.
The problem is, when awesome is started, keyboard (modkey + r) is not working. I must click with mouse on the menu, open terminal, or some app from menu, and then keys start working.
Anyone have an idea why this is happening?
Thanks.
EDIT: Changed login manager to slim, and all is working fine.
Last edited by Zmuss (2012-05-17 20:56:52)Well, the 'unplugged' reference was noted earlier and I wasn't sure if you'd get a
better response than a standard suggestion to try the other ideas in this link first
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
before actually performing the SMC, that is a dragnet kind of catch-all, sometimes.
All of my keyboard & mouse units are USB and I've gone as far as supplying the
mouse and other peripherals with a powered USB hub; so power from the Mac
isn't spread too thin. The keyboard is one of the only items that should be attached
to the USB port; as it has to work on startup pre-boot keyboard shortcuts... Such
as SafeBoot, PRAM reset, and others where you need a live keyboard and BT
may not be up to the task of being ready. Three going on four of my Macs have
bluetooth capabilities for those items; but I can't justify the continual upkeep cost.
Spare USB keyboards and a few extra mouse are handy as troubleshooting tools, too.
There are some USB keyboard references among search results in this linked page:
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Apple+USB+keyboard+troubleshooting
Perhaps the SMC pre-reset suggestions may help resolve the issue, if not, try reset.
Good luck & happy computing!

Asked and answered. You need to edit that file - this is described in the Beginners guide and installation guide (edit: and several times on the locale page).

[SOLVED] Keyboard-shortcuts "alt+." and "alt+d" don't work under X11
Hi,
I switched from gentoo to archlinux and everything is running fine except my following really annoying problem:
The keycombinations "alt+." (insert the last parameter from the line before) and "alt+d" (delete the word under the cursor) don't work under X11 (in my xterm).
They work before I start X with bash and zsh btw...
My "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-keyboard.conf" looks like
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "keyboard"
MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
Option "XkbLayout" "de"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
EndSection
It is really annoying without these keys working and I have no clue where to look. Can anyone give me a hint?
Thanks
