Location of iCal alarm on screen

My iCal alarms all seem to be working properly except...they pop up almost entirely off the screen. When an alarm 'goes', I get the appropriate alarm sound, and the alarm message pops up...but I can only see the extreme left hand side of the alarm message (i.e. the rest of it is off the right side of the screen). I have to drag it back onto the screen to read it. That's fine...but I'm afraid that if my alarms don't pop up in the centre of the screen (or at least entirely on the screen) I'll not see it, and I'm going to miss whatever I'm being reminded about. Any way to make the messages pop-up in a different location?

  • Ical alarm keeps trying to open file from old location

I have an iCal alarm to open an accounts file each day.
I moved the file to another folder,
and selected the new location iniCal.
    It always gives me this:
Could not open file because 'Old/Path/to/File'  could not be found.
When I look at the alarm section in the iCal event, there is a list of files.
When I choose the file (with the same file name) in the NEW folder, this list of files doesnt seem to update.
Is there of forcing iCal to open my new file path?
or a way of taking the OLD file out of this list?
    Thank you for your help
    Frazer

I just found how to removed the old files from my list
    in the terminal I type:
    open library/preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
and then delete the entries under PersistentMenu
Would still love to hear a more user friendly way to do this.
And a way to just get iCal to open the new file path, or how best to report this bug to apple

  • Ical alarms still opening off screen

Are other people still having problems with Ical alarms opening up off screen After the 10.4.9 update?
Why would Apple say that it is finally fixed in their descriptions when it is Not?
I wonder who at Apple tests these things and how they get their results?

Add me to the list. I'm still getting my alerts almost completely off screen. As a software tester by trade, I'm a bit insulted that Apple would say it was fixed when it quite clearly is not.

  • How to stop re-popping up old ical alarms, i.e. ical calender is not deletable, but keeps on coming back on screen after 30 secs.

hi, looks like I have a cache problem,
in ical I can't remove , delete a calendar. after 30 secs it comes back on screen. same happens with old , passed ical alarms.
i deleted the ical cache User/library/ical, however did not solve the problem

    >> then I get a completely blue screen.
That probably means that you're not looking at a bug in Photoshop, but a problem with a driver - and the most likely cause would be your video card driver.
And sure enough, your video card driver is almost 2 years out of date.
Please go to NVidia's website and get the latest driver - then follow their directions for installation (so you don't get bits of old driver left over).

  • Can I permanently keep  the iCal alarm dialog box where I want it on screen

I've switched to iCal completely after living with Entourage for years. What I liked about the MS Office Notifications is that they open in the same position where I last left it. However, the iCal alarm always opens in the center of the screen. What's really maddening is that if I drag the alarm to the position I want it (and leave it open even), the next alarm pops it back to the center of the screen. Arghh!
Positioning it followed by quitting and relaunching iCal doesn't work. Is there any way to keep it where I want it?

This happens sometimes... it is just a bug.
This message is probably coming from your HP update manager.
An explanation:  The Update manager is supposed to (of course) give you the option to download and install any available HP updates.  The lack of the buttons is a buggy bit that shows up in bad instructions - sometimes the result of old code, and sometimes the result of -- the buggy bits.
Try updating your HP Support Assistant
First, get rid of any older version:
Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >
Scroll down, find, and Uninstall HP Support Assistant.
Restart your computer after uninstalling the existing version of Support Assistant.
Install the Latest Version of the Support Assistant
    HP Support Assistant
    ================================================================================
You can control WHEN update messages shows up,
AND whether it shows up at all.
After the Support Assistant is updated:
Call up (Open) HP Support Assistant > (Launch HP Support Assistant) >
    Tune-up > View Settings > View Notification Settings >
For example:  Set / CHECK "Taskbar Only"  >> to turn OFF popups...
So...Select as desired... > Apply > Close the Support Assistant
    ================================================================================
Another method to qauickly control HP Update:
Start > search / type "HP Update" > Click on HP Update to Open >
Settings > Adjust schedule as desired
    ================================================================================
    I hope this helps.
    Kind Regards,

  • How prevent iCal ALARM reminders popping up when not wanted?

Sometimes I don't want to see my alarm box popping up to remind me of things.
Suddenly, & frequently, the pesky iCal Alarm box pops up in the middle of the screen with another preset alarm reminder, insisting on my immediate attention. Like when I'm watching a video on my mac.
Then I've got to get up and move it out of the way, but as soon as I touch it, the video which I've set to full screen shrinks to small & I've got to click it to big again. This is just one of the inconveniences.
Please, how can I set the iCal alarm to give it a rest for a while and save those reminders for later
I've made lots of iCal alarms to remind me of things throughout the day. so these interruptions are a constant problem.
Q#2: Why doesn't my ALARM BOX show active the Yellow Button so I could relegate it to the side Dock? Or even the Green Button, so I could enlarge it when I want to see all my open reminders without scrolling?
Instead, My ical ALARM BOX only has the Red button, which closes it out and loses all those reminders therein until it's their time again.
Oh, dear, I don't think anybody can solve this problem.
    Or
    can
    you?

  • ICal Alarm - Pass Event data to AppleScript?

Is there a way that a script called by an iCal alarm can be passed event data as parameters?

This is a quick one I knocked up a while back to see if it was possible. The problem is that iCal doesn't tell the script what event triggered it, so you have to go looking ...

  • Duplicate ical alarms using external boot drive

I have an external firewire drive that I boot Leopard from. I carry it between home and work. At both home and at work I have similar, but not identical Mac Pro (Intel) desktop machines that stay put. In either location I can just boot from my external firewire drive and have all my OS environment and files with me. I've been doing this for months.
Every since I've set it up, though, I have had a problem with iCal alarms. If an iCal alarm goes off, say, while I'm using my external HDD at home, and I dismiss it, it never shows up again at home, even if I reboot. But if I then take the HDD into the office and boot from the external HDD there, all the alarms that went off and were cleared at home, show up all at once when I boot up at work. It also happens in reverse -- alarms cleared at work show up the next time upon boot at home. Note that I'm running from the same boot disk in both cases. I don't sync multiple calendars with .Mac.
This is particularly annoying because I have some automator ical scripts that are triggered once/day and if they run at home late at night, I don't want them running again when I boot up the next morning at work.
Anyone know a fix/workaround for this. I searched the iCal prefs, iCal help, this discussion list, and did a google search to no avail.

You can use the hardware, but will have to repartition and reinstall the OS from the disk shipped with the new Mac Mini.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303220
If you create a disk image of the Lacie on your Mini, you can later use setup assistant to restore users and applications from that image.

  • ICal alarms aren't reliable

Since getting my new iMac (and even after upgrading to the new OS), my iCal alarms don't always go off. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for why this is or which events the alarms go off for and which events the alarms never happen for.
I have one alarm set to go off every day at 10:45 am. Until yesterday it was fine. Now it hasn't gone off for two days in a row. (This alarm was rock solid when I was using a G4. Then I got a new Mac, synced everything, and it worked fine for months afterward. Then, yesterday, all of a sudden, no alarm. Again this morning, no alarm.)
When I set my alarms and appointments for the upcoming week, again, some work, some don't. I've triple checked the settings and I don't think I'm doing anything wrong when setting the alarms.
I live by iCal and really need this fixed. Help!

My experience has been a little different. When I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard 10.5 email notifications of events I had scheduled in iCal ceased to work. (Alert messages to the screen with sound still happened.) Then the 10.5.1 update seemed to fix the emailing notification problem.
But for some reason, recently the email notifications have become unreliable again. I set up a test event yesterday and never got notified. Then today a regularly scheduled (recurring) event came due and it did send an email which seemed to trigger the missing email from yesterday as well.
And unlike the situation when running 10.5, sometimes the event will cause the Mail app to open but not send the email. In 10.5 the Mail app never responded in any fashion.
Later... Since writing the above I have read other threads on this and the following has some interesting thoughts:

  • Scripts and Workflows set as iCal alarms not functioning in Lion...

...or it could be becuase i am using a Beta version related to the Beta for iClloud and iOS5....I'm not 100% sure....
All I know is that I have scripts and workflows that used to work before the upgrade, they STILL work when I run them independantly using Script editor and Automator, but they do not run when the iCal alarm that they are tied to goes off.  Coem to think of it, the only way that i know those alrms are going off is that I get a notification on my synced iPhone that tells me they are going off.  - so i guess I really don't know if those alarms are working on my mac at home.
    any thoughts or help?

For me it's completely random. Some examples of what's happened to me...
    - I've set a new alarm (that I need to go off weekly) When I first set it it will pop up, but then the next week it will not. But then sometimes it will.
    - I also have an alarm to check woot.com everyday that NEVER goes off.
I don't know if anyone else is having this problem (or if it's related) but something else also started happening the same time I installed Leopard... Occasionaly whatever window in any program I'm working in will all of a sudden go inactive / ghosted so I'm not able to type, etc. I have to click on the window I was working in to make it active again.
The tech I talked to thought that perhaps a pop up alarm was popping up OFF screen and therefore causing the inactive window problem. But after erasing all the info in my iCal (that's right, EVERY appointment had to be reentered) I know for a fact that's not the problem.

  • ICal Alarms Request

Use my MBP all the time while teaching classes. Please give more choices for the iCal alarms. I have to turn them off when I'm teaching because I don't want them popping up during class on the projection screen. But then I don't remember to turn it back on after class. Days go by and I forget the alarms function is off and miss all kinds of alerts. The previous version had an option to only allow alarms to come on if iCal itself was running. Much better. Please bring that back or something even better. Thanks!

  • Mac crashing due to iCal Alarm

    Hi,
About 2 days ago my MacBook shut down when the battery was empty (instead of going to sleep). That caused the Date & Time to reset to a random day, year and time which then caused my iCal to behave irratically. Meaning a blank iCal alarm window appeared and iTunes started a song (probally from an alarm i once set a long time ago).
This has happened a few times before but after setting back the time and date everything was fine again.  The problem now is that I have set the right date and time but it still keeps happening about every 30 minutes and everytime the blank iCal Alarm window appears my Mac freezes.I then have to wait 'till I can quit (or force quit) iTunes and then the blank iCal window keeps floating on top of everything for at least 7 minutes and i can't close it.
I have tried removing iCal's .plist, didn't work, then tried updating iCal, didn't help, then removed iCal from my Mac but still the window keeps appearing but I don't even have iCal on my computer anymore.
Can anybody help me with this? It's driving me crazy and I have no idea what's causing this. I'm running OS X 10.5.8. on a 17" MacBook Pro
    Thanks!

I found that everytime the blank window appears it's iCalHelper that's unresponsive (in the Activity Monitor). However if i search for that file I can't find anything. This is where it should be located according to Activity Monitor: /System/Library/Frameworks/CalendarStore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/iCal Helper.app/Contents/MacOS/iCal Helper ,but in my Frameworks folder there is no CalendarStore.framework folder and I am stuck again

  • Ical alarms and birthdays...please help

I am trying to get all of my birthdays to use the same alarm settings. I went in and set up one persons birthday alarm setting but cant figure out how to get all of them to send an alarm without going to each and every birthday listing. I have a "calendar" set up called, Birthdays that they are all listed under. Is there an easy way to do this?

So, it sounds like I may have been experiencing the same problem as everyone else (general iCal alarm issues). The location of the preferences file you provided is exactly what I was looking for! I deleted the file, created a test event with an alarm a few mins in the future, and BAM! It worked! For the first time in over... a couple years now (?) I actually saw an iCal alarm.
Possible causes of my error: while i think it may have been upgrades, software bugs, mobileme, etc. it seems one unexplored possibility was when my machine ran out of a charge (batteries) and the date was reset to 1969. I checked the date of the file you mentioned above--crated date was 1969. So, it was cycling through hundreds of alarms since I got my machine (2004).
In short... THANK YOU FOR POSTING THAT LOCATION OF THAT FILE. I hope I am not speaking prematurely and that this issue does not crop up again. If so, at least I have a decent workaround. Cheers.

  • Red X - Dismissing iCal Alarms

I've never been able to locate documentation or even a discussion on what happens when you dismiss several iCal alarms all at once by using the window close (red X) button. Can someone fill me in please.
Also, anyone know of a way to get options for dismissing multiple simultaneous alarms such as: snooze all for n minutes, dismiss all for good, or snooze until the top of the next hour.
And, Apple iCal Dev, please size the alarm box to fit the simultaneous alarms. So much elegance, and then this.
    Thanks.
