Locked by a template
I am trying to put this just so photo album on a page and it
says it cannot do it because of code that is locked by a template.
What can I do to my template to make this album work. I must have
done something inadvertently to this template, because i was able
to use this album on other pages.

I didn't say put a heading in. I said to put in an editable
region with the

"locked by a template or translator" in Editable Region - CS4
Hello,
I am working on a series of ASP homepages using repeating regions in Dreamweaver CS4. However, I am encountering "Making this change would require changing code that is is locked by a template or translator. The change will be discarded." errors.
On each homepage, I have two levels of nested repeating regions set up as "slides" (Top level) that contain "news blurbs".
Inside each news blurb repeat instance is an editable region.

When I attempt to add any new paragraphs inside a news item (<li class="blurb"></li>) in design mode, I get
an error message telling me that the area is locked by a template and/or translator. However, I can still type additional text
into pre-existing paragraphs, as well as insert images. Attempting editing in code view works also works.
Individuals that will be updating each page are going to be using design mode, so I can't go for the obvious work-around. I have no idea why the error keeps occurring. Could anyone clarify this?
Fixes suggested in other threads that haven't worked:
making sure the page has valid markup ( passes XHTML 1.0 Transitional)
ensuring that the region is marked as editable ( it is editable )
Current ideas as to potential causes:
something I missed in the code that's triggering dreamweaver to throw errors
nested repeating regions are somehow creating the issue
I am mostly sure that ASP is not causing this, as I have been able to reproduce the issue in an XHTML-only child page of the same template.

I think it didn't like the <p></p> because it is a block element.
It didn't like <strong></strong> either, but I'm not sure why.
I am struggling with this myself so I hope you can let me know how this works. -
I apologize if this has been answered before, but I can't
seem to find a solution in the forum archive. The error message
below displays in Dreamweaver CS3 when I attempt to edit a
Fireworks CS3 file using the "Edit" button in Dreamweaver. After
clicking "Done" in Firworks to update the file and return to my
HTML page in Dreamweaver, the error message displays. Can someone
help me troubleshoot the problem? As a side note, I tested it in my
older version of Dreamweaver and Fireworks (studio 8 versions) to
see if I would get the same error message and I didn't - everything
worked fine and no error message displayed.
DW Error Message: Making this change would require code that

Are you sure? Show us one.
The error you describe is only thrown in one of two cases -
1. You have actually changed what is being mentioned (sadly
this is most
often NOT the case)
2. You have a coding error somewhere on the page (or in the
CSS) that is
causing the template engine to burp this error message even
though it
doesn't really apply
DW4 was nearly totally unaware of 'validation' errors. DW8 is
MUCH stricter
about them. When anyone says "this was fine in DW4 and is now
not fine in
DW8" this is the first and most likely solution.

Locked by a template or tanslator -- again
I know this an old problem, but the after searching the forums I haven't been able to find anything that helps.
I'm moving from MS Expressions Web 3 to Dreamweaver CD5.5. The transition has gone very smoothly except for the "locked by a template or tanslator" problem when I try to modify a any class using CSS Styles. The class is definitely in the editable region and should not be shown as locked by the template. I can modify the class in code view without any problem.
There must be something obvious that I'm missing, but none of the suggestions previously discussed on the forum have solved the problem.
Any suggestions?Yes, the CSS, HTML, and DWT all validated.
Interestingly, I can change rules from the PROPERTIES group at the bottom of the screen (font size and color, for example), but I can't change the same rules from CSS RULES group or the CSS Styles dialog window.
Is there some way to disable this test in a config file, or something? That would get me past the immediate problem. Then I can get the site up using Dreamweaver and track down the cause of the problem later. -
Contribute CS5 modified "locked" areas of template
I am new to contribute for my clients to use. I created a website using Dreamweaver templtes, then set up a client with contribute, as a "publisher".
The first time into a page the client added a section to an editable region, but the file as saved to the server by contribute had several empty paragraphs distributed through the uneditable ("locked"??) areas, breaking the layout.
Is this a feature, or a bug? Is there something I should have done differently in setting up the users? (I took most or all defaults, as I recall).OK, it has happened again, on a completely different site with a different user and (obviously) different template. Here's the piece of the page which the CS5 Contribute "publisher" broke:

I've bolded 3 items: the first is the template's end point for the editable region; the footer should not be editable. The 2 changes show in the empty <p> above the footer div, and the addition of style attribute in the "webguy" paragraph. Contribute should not have allowed those changes (I think they were made without the user even knowing about it). The blank <p> tag broke the layout, forcing the graphics abart and adding a blank line. -

Suresh.Also bear in mind, any security approach that relies on workbook protection of an input schedule has 2 flaws:
1.) anyone with a hacker mentality, 15 minutes to kill, and Google can figure out how to break Excel workbook protection.
2.) anyone with basic BPC training (or access to eSubmit -> dynamic template library) can build their own input schedule, and submit data to any data intersection they want.
The common theme to these is, the system is only as secure as your users are ignorant of how it works. And users are always smarter & more creative than you can expect, particularly when they're being told not to do something that they'd like to do.
So it pays to secure the appropriate dimensions, use work status settings to lock data that shouldn't change, and use task profiles to restrict access. -
Removing locked elements from template
How do I remove locked elements contained within a template. I am unable to select the item to unlock it.
Which template?
The items in question may just be in the background...
Did you try the menu 'Arrange/Unlock', after doing a 'Select All'...? -

I use several included files, but they have no head or body tags inside of them.
The message popped up when I tried to convert this file:

in Dreamweaver from html strict to xhtml 1 transitional.
What can be the problem?

Last night we thought it was a problem with the server settings.
The settings are adapted, and now the included files do show up in the browser.
But when I tried to convert the doctype in Dw just now, the same message turned up, so this problem isn't solved yet.

Newbie help me obi wans: ...coded locked by template or translator
Hi Folks,
I'm such a newbie to DW I've been using it for a few years actually, but in a very basic sense.
I dloaded a template, added some graphics, made some buttons etc.. and of course text, but when it comes to coding,
I've only figure out how to add spaces lol
I'm trying to add a flash video to my samples page. I can add images, but every time I add the .flv, I receive the subject message.
So here are 2 issues:
1. I don't know if this related to #2, but I can't erase the 3rd column...or even use it. it's locked - I see a circle with a line through it. The template I bought did say it was 3 columns, but I don't understand why I can't touch it. I've attached a tiff of what it looks like right now.
2. as the subject says "changing code is locked by the template is locked a template or translator" is giving me grief.
I've reviewed the previous posts on the subject, but I'm afraid my newbie-ness has left me not knowing what to do. ie. I can't find a time/date to change...I see the <head> and <script>, but they're greyed out on the one page I'm trying to edit. They're not greyed out on the template page however.
I also tried saving my .dwt as a new template, but that didn't work either.

Page Properties Locked by Template
I am getting this error when I click on the Page Properties
button: "All of this page's properties are locked by a template, so
you can't edit them."
When I look at the template in Dreamweaver they don't appear
to be locked and when I compare the template to a template from
another site (that doesn't have this problem in Contribute) they
are identical.
What am I missing?Yes, be sure of where the editable regions are defined in
your code to make sure you don't accidentally have some weird piece
of code or a tag wrapped in an 'editable region' tag.
Also, is the file locked by Contribute? Is the Edit button
available? If the page is locked, the page properties may be locked
as well. -
Cannot install Flash Video. Template Locked
The .htm that I am tryig to insert the Flash 8 video was
built from a .dwt. At the end of the installtion
I get this Dreamweaver error message is "Making this change
would require changing code that is locked
by a template or a translator. The change will be discarded."
The .dwt has 2 css within. I believe the problem involves the
css.
I have no problem installing the video in a page not built

How to disable erroneous template lock checks in Dreamweaver CC?
I am building a Coldfusion & Bootstrap based app. I have been happily working on it previously in DW CS6. Upon starting work in DW CC I keep getting a "Making this change would require changing code that is locked by a template or a translator. The change will be discarded" pop-up message every time I try to edit the index.cfm document.
This project does not use DW templates and neither have I *ever* used DW templates. I have searched for solutions, all of which point to using "Modify > Templates > Detach from template", but since this file *isn't* a template, this option is greyed out and so not available.
How do I switch off this check as it is completely stopping me from using DW CC with CFM files that use JavaScript libraries (i.,e. just about everything I do that is CF based!). I realise CF support is being deprecated in DW, but surely it should not be completely prevented from working? Is this a bug?The error message is applicable for Libraries as well.

Try commenting the JS Library code and see if it helps. -
Locking editable template regions to Contribute users only
Hi,
I would like to know if it's possible to lock some editable
template regions to Contribute users only? We need to have these
regions editable through Dreaweaver so our site designers can still
modify them. I'm not talking about the "Optional region" here, just
a "regular" editable region.

when using Dreamweaver templates.. but a possible dirty workaround
would be to place those editable regions inside dynamic code (ASP,
PHP, JSP, etc..) as Contribute won't be able to interpret them..

Hi - I somehow accidentally locked my code or my template so
that I cannot make changes to my code. I can only change my pages
using the design view. If I try to change my code in the code view,
I get a message that says "Making this change would require
changing code that is locked by a template or a translator. I am
indeed using a Template but I have no idea how I managed to lock
it. Does anyone know how to unlock it? In the meantime I am
changing all my code in Notepad - kind of a pain. Thanks!DW is very picky about having valid code on your template

The first three refer to the fact that you have specified
