LockScreen.app using 3Gb real memory under Server 10.5.2

I'm using ARD to remotely administer a brand new XServe with 16 Gb system memory. I run long lived ARD sessions, typically using 'curtain' (screen lock) mode. I recently noticed that Activity Monitor claims that LockScreen.app is using more than 3 Gb of real memory. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a memory leak in LockScreen.app? Is there any way to avoid this?
Thanks,
Geva

Permissions Repair is still slow in 10.5.2, but faster than before and with no error messages. On my MBP 160Gb with >1mil files and only 12Gb of free space, it took approximately 4 minutes instead of the 10+ minutes it took just prior to the upgrade. It still hangs on 1 Minute but then gets on with it quite a bit faster after the initial hang. Still much slower than in Tiger 'though.

  • App uses too much memory!

My iPad shows that apps takes up about 8.7GB on it's memory but in reality it's only 7GB.
iTunes displays it correctly when I deselect/select an app to sync, but when it actually syncs it, it revert back to the increased size.

    Has anyone encountered this before?
    How did you fix it?

Sorry, mixed this up with a different question on another tab.
I see reports of this problem starting with Exchange 2013 Cumulative Update 3, but no documented solution.

  • OSX Mail App uses lots of memory with Exchange change

A couple weeks back, we switched from exchange 2007 to exchange 2010.   The only change required on the OSX mail client was to change the server address.   I have two macbook pros, one is a 2GB early vintage intel, and the other a more recent 4GB model.   Both of them are configured for access to the exchange server.   Both are running 10.6.
Once the change was made, both clients started using huge amounts of memory.   This isn't a leak, as is reported in some Lion threads, because it eventually comes back down again.   When you start the client, it might use about 150MB of RAM.   After a while I have seen as much as 1.6GB of RAM usage on the 4GB machine.   If you take the exchange account out of the mix (disable it in preferences) the client consistently stays at about 75MB of RAM.  The peak isn't limited by the client as far as I can tell -- it basically uses up all free memory and drives the system completly nuts.   Many of the applications no longer perform well once they are subjected to memory starvation, and this includes the mail client itself.
I am now running the activity window with Mail to see if I can spot a pattern, but in one case I watched Mail's memory usage grow in Activity Monitor with nothing in the Activity screen.
I aso tried creating a new account instance on the 4GB machine, but without any cached data the behavior was far worse.  It very quickly consumes the entire machine and doesn't seem to return to normal.
I am firmly convinced this is a side effect of changing the exchange service or one of the exchange settings, if for no other reason than the behavior is new on two systems.   It's still unforgivable for the Mail client to do this -- if it can consume all available memory then it needs to monitor itself and defer or break up what it is trying to do.   I am a great fan of this mail client but this is so unusable that it might force me back to outlook running in a VM.
    Any suggestions?

I did not get a solution from the community, but I can provide one.   However, mine was not a leak.   It would use over 2GB of RAM at times, but eventually return to 150MB or so for a while, then back up again.   I shouldn't have taken it to the genius bar, rather I should have just filed a bug.   I have not done that yet because I have resolved it.   I eventually just bit the bullet and deleted absolutely everything associated with the account.  Every cache, every plist, everything I could find.   I did not capture the specifics unfortunately, because at the time I wasn't even convinced it would work, but I had no other option.   Starting with a totally new account after that, it went through a period of about 24 hours where it would still use a lot of RAM, but then settled in.   It's been well behaved now for a number of weeks.
I would be curious if your RAM usage ever decreases, and if you try the same solution if it works for you.
    Good luck.

  • Spotify app using too much memory on my iPhone 5s

I have a about 60 local files on my phone that are all 3 minute songs. That's it. For some reason, Spotify was taking up 1.5 GBs on my phone. I just deleted the app and reinstalled it with the same number of songs and now it is only taking up 550 MB. This is some sort of issue that needs to be fixed

Thats what I meant. While Streaming it also gets downloaded fully(to cache) to play. Not really a 'stream', but it looks like it. But the main problem is when you finished streaming spotify app doesnt delete the downloaded files(cache) for streaming. And so your memory usage grows and grows while 'streaming' till you reinstall the app(deletes the cache). But its irritating reinstalling every time.

  • Real memory seems under used

Why does everyone keep telling you to fit a whole bunch of memory to your computer to make it work better? Story fails to add up to me on checking the Activity Monitor, with Virtual Memory always being used in far greater amounts than Real Memory, which is basically left there in the corner twiddling its thumbs waiting 'just in case' I re-open some past app, which isn't going to happen. Sounds more like a virtual story than a true story to me.

That's probably because you're "virtually" ignorant of how memory management works in OS X. Read the following articles for enlightenment:

  • Full use of installed "real" memory not used.

    Hi
    I have a Power Mac G5 (Dual 2GHz), running OS X Tiger 10.4.11.
When you upgrade RAM, does the OS automatically make use of this or do you need to make system changes? I ask because I have 3GB of RAM and I never see it being fully used. I've tested this whilst using apps like Photoshop CS3, and monitoring RAM useage via Activity Monitor. I understand Mac OS X makes great use of virtual memory, so when does real memory come into action?
    Thanks
    gtds

The memory being recognized by the system is what is shown when you select +About This Mac+ from the Apple menu. You can also run System Profiler for more details. If that shows 3 GB of RAM as expected, it is being recognized and the Mac will use it when needed. Virtual memory is still used, but it will be used to a lesser extent with more RAM installed.
If there is a lot of green in Activity Monitor's diagram of System Memory usage, that is good. If you run multiple large apps such as Photoshop and actually do some system intensive tasks, you will probably see less green, but RAM usage is not like CPU usage; Mac OS X is not going to use the RAM just because it's there. It will use the RAM when it is needed.
If the Mac is not recognizing the expected 3GB of RAM, that's a problem. You should run System Profiler to see what modules are not as expected.

  • How do I activate Office 2013 that I have deployed using ODT and App-V onto a Remote Desktop Server?

    I am setting up a demo Server 2012 R2 environment (1 DC server, 2 RDSH servers, 1 App-V server).
I have created an Office 2013 volume license App-V package using the latest Office Deployment Toolkit. I have deployed the App-V package to an RDS server and it all works fine. However, I am unable to activate Office 2013 using the MSDN Office 2013 retail
key because it tells me the product key is invalid for this version of Office. I've looked at the alternative of using the App-V Sequencer to create the Office 2013 package, but from what I've read this is not a Microsoft supported method.
Is there any way that I can activate Office 2013 (volume license on RDS) using the method I've outlined above, or is there any way of using the Office2013 download from MSDN such that it can be packaged by the ODT (or App-V Sequencer) for successful deployment
using App-V and activation using the retail Office 2013 product key on MSDN?

True, VL channel media can't be activated with MSDN Retail pkeys (that's what I was trying to get you to understand, I figured you would be attempting that, as so many people do :(
I've not attempted your scenario myself.
    It sounds like you aren't following the supported scenarios as (poorly) described by MS;
The way I read their guide, for an RDS scenario, you must use a VL key [either MAK or KMS] (since a subscription product+key can't be used on RDS):
    i.e.: <Product ID="ProPlusVolume">
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2772509
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2915745
    http://technet.microsoft.com/library/dn481351.aspxhttp://blogs.technet.com/b/office_resource_kit/archive/2013/12/02/announcing-app-v-5-0-sp2-support-for-office-2013-volume-licensing-editions.aspx
So, that all means that for RDS, you can't use anything other than VL "product" (in
the form of an ODT-generated output) with a VL pkey. So, for your RDS demo setup, you need to use real product and real pkeys.

  • Often, Firefox app will close, but the underlying Windows process will not and cannot be stopped via Task Manager. When this happens, Firefox can no longer be used...the system must be rebooted.

    Hello,
Often, the Firefox app will close, but the underlying Windows process will not and cannot be stopped via Task Manager. When this happens, Firefox can no longer be used...the system must be rebooted. This happens especially when many apps are running but even though there are plenty of memory resources available.
I have tried to find if something is using Firefox in the background, but have no way to know what that would be.
Their are no apparent viruses detected.
Firefox is version v5.0 and occurred in earlier release.
    System is Windows 7 (64bit).

well, it's not the same hardware and it's a bit different.
I managed to pass that stage somehow but I still have a problem
I don't use the built-in creator tool that comes with Spyrus as it doesn't know how to append a pre-staged media that was created by SCCM that should apply the Windows file system to a second partition and the WinPE to the first partition.
I managed to do everything. my only problem is that the WTGCreator that comes with SCCM 2012 R2 creates the 350MB partition with FAT32 file system.
when I boot from the device I get the WinPE, I can choose a task sequence and then it fails when trying to apply the wim file. the error tells me that the 350MB partition is FAT32 which is not supported (even though it chooses the second partition, which
is all the rest of the disk space)
what I did was adding another task that converts the 32 Fat partition to an NTFS partition and then the process continues and finishes successfully! but that's a workaround.
I'm trying to make this process as smooth as possible without having additional steps

  • The old allowing oracle 3GB virtual memory on windows 2003 server question?

    Hi all,
    I have a 9.2.0.7.0 database on windows 2003 server (32bit). 4 dual core cpu's and 16GB of Ram.
    I have set .use_indirect_data_buffers=TRUE and *._enable_NUMA_optimization=FALSE.
The db_block_buffers is set at 4GB.
    Shared_pool 200MB
    Large_pool 56MB
    Java pool 56MB
    PGA is currently at 400MB
AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY is set at 720MB (which is the lowest I can set it)
At the moment there are various jobs running on the database and no users logged on and the virtual memory is at 1.8GB.
The problem is as soon as the users logs onto the DB the virtual memory goes over 2GB and we see the error 'ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 2416 bytes'.
Now I have edited the boot.ini with the following parameters:
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="UBS WSP - Wintel Server Platform with PAE" /fastdetect /PAE /4GT
because the /3GB parameter switch started the server with lots of errors.
The oracle.exe process still seems unable to go over the 2GB limit with getting 'ORA-04030' errors.
Can someone tell me if I have missed anything? Or a reason why oracle is not using the switch?
    TIA
    Eddy

    Satish,
see metalink Note:1036312.6 : Utilizing Up to 3GB Virtual Memory on Windows.
    it says :
"The 32-bit versions of the Windows® 2000 Advanced Server and Windows NT Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition, operating systems were the first versions of Windows to provide applications with a 3-GB flat virtual address space, with the kernel and executive components using only 1 GB. In response to customer requests, Microsoft has expanded the availability of this support to the 32-bit version of Windows XP Professional and all 32-bit versions of Windows Server™ 2003."
of course, we mustn't be mistaken with the AWE switch (/PAE) that is not available for standard edition.

  • Mail was using 400 megs real memory?

I was looking at Activity Monitor as I was wondering what was using so much memory and I noticed Mail was using 400 megs of real memory. I quit and restarted up the app and then it was using 55 megs. The system then free up tons of memory.
Does anyone have any idea why this would happen. I'm guessing its happened in the past as I've noticed the system seems to be using a lot of memory and I just haven't noticed mail might be using it.
Entourage, which has multiple apps, rarely ever uses more than a 100 megs.

    Hello Kerry:
I am not trying to be funny, but why do you care? If you are having performance problems, that is another matter.
In answer to your question, I assume that the Mail application was busy doing something which stopped when you shut it down and restarted. There are so many variables, it would be, IMHO, a wild guess to determine what was happening in your particular situation.

  • Do I have to use LabVIEW Real Time with a reflective memory node?

For reference with an external data system that will be temporarily installed at a customer's site, they have asked that I tie into their data network to record data from their control system.  They apparently use a reflective memory network for data sharing.  I have no prior experience with reflective memory, but all references to it involve real time systems.  I do not need absolute determinism to acquire this data, I can be late by several milliseconds with no problem.  Do I still need to use LabVIEW Real Time to interface with the PXI reflective memory node?

    Hi AEI,
I have worked with that card briefly before. It has a Visa based driver and RT isn't required. However, I haven't worked with the card on a non-rt system and am not sure if there any issues to be aware of.
A lot of work has gone into integrating support for the card into Veristand, it may save you enough development time to use at an RT-Veristand system to be worth the extra cost.

In tune show all summary activity during sync between nb and apple device. One of the summary is memory space status. Audio mayb3gb, photo 2gb, app with 3gb. What is other? Other consist of what type of file? It show quite substantial storage capacity?? Anyone can answer what is in other??

"Other" includes data such as contact information and photos assigned to contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cookies/history, notes created with the Notes application, SMS messages, email stored locally or cached, and 3rd party application data created and stored by the application.
If "other" is more than say .75GB at the most, you had a corrupt sync. Try syncing again and if the problem persists, the recognized fix for this is to restore your iPad.
