Log and transfer, my transfered files become very large...
When I use Log and transfer, my files become very large. For instance, The card that I'm transferring from only holds 32G and after I transfer the footage to an external drive it has become around 70G. I checked the codec on transfered files and its showing apple pro res 422 1920 x 1080. Is there an import setting I'm missing? This is all new to me...
This is normal.
Your camera likely shoots AVCHD, a highly compressed version of MPEG 4.
It is so compressed because it uses a "Long GOP" format where only every 15th frame is independent (i frame).
Those in between only contain the differences to the prior i frame and cannot exist without it.
(It's actually somewhat more complicated, but now you know what it is called, you can do more research)
You need the ability to edit on any frame, however. The footage is transcoded to make every frame independent so you can do just that. It takes more space.

Unknown Error when I Logging and Transfer P2 Card files in FCP 6.0.6
I have been trying for the past two week to Log and Transfer P2 files to my external hardrive using FCP 6.0.6 unsuccessfully.
Originally I tried to Log and Transfer directly from the Panasonic HPX-170 in between my shooting. The first time it was a success but from then on I always get the same Unknown Error when attempting to transfer. When I encountered the Unknown Error during the second transfer I went on to create folders with the P2 contents on my external Hard Drive.
When I drag any of the P2 folder content on the Log and Transfer window I can see all the clips. I can successfully transfer small B-roll clips I have but any big size file (all my interviews) return an Unknown Error symbol at the end of the transfer. I believe this is probably why I didn't encounter any issues during my first time.
I tried deleting the preferences in FCP and then Logging and Transfer and it works if the systems settings are set for the Mac Pro but not for the external HD. The problem is I don't have enough space on my Mac. I have cleared 45GB of space but my P2 files total 54GB. I tried the same process with a Mac Power Book with FCP 5.1.4 and again in encounter the same problem.
The external HD is a 1TB Western Digital that I have used before with FCP for editing but never before with P2 files. Its in good working order and has 79GB free space remaining. Both the camera and the P2 cards (16GB and 4GB) are also performing as expected.
I would appreciate any suggestions.#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

Log and Transfer for MXF files (Canon 300XF) suddenly doesn't work
I've searched for a solution and I've pulled out a few hairs...
We have 2 identical FCP7 MacPro workstations (2x2.66 dual-core Xeon, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT, 256MB VRAM, OSX 10.6.8).
Both systems have successfully ingested MXF files captured by a Canon 300XF using Canon's XF plugin for FCP.
Until today.
One system doesn't ingest the footage anymore. One still does.
The faulty system sees the footage in Log and Transfer, but as we add the footage to the queue, the red exclaimation point pops up. Hovering over the alert gives us: ERROR: UNKNOWN.
Nothing has changed in either system.
Any ideas? Gremlins maybe?
Thanks!...and a Canon XF Utility software uninstall/reinstall solved it.
Oops.
Should have tried that before the 17 other things we tried. -
Log and transfer mod/moi files
FCP will recognize my SD card and files from a Canon Fs300 camera on one of my machines but not the other. If I check log and transfer preferences - it has a MPEG source format. How did I get that and what do I do to get it on my other machines.
ThanksDownload Canon's FCP Log & Transfer installer. L&C is a plugin architecture, and Panasonic is the only one that comes built in (cause they helped develop it). Search Canon's site, download, install.

Import P2 over FireWire like Final Cut Log and Transfer?
Hello,
The ONE issue keeping me from using Premiere (which came with my Master Collection CS5) is that I can't seem to import files from my Panasonic HVX200 in a simple way. In trusty old Final Cut I can easily do it using Log and Transfer. Rename files. Log them in any way I like. Then drag them in, converted to the format of my choice. Cha ching! If I could get the same functionality in Premiere, then I'd never need upgrade my Final Cut again.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks!
JoshShooternz, thank you for clarifying. I see your point. I'm glad that works for you. It sounds like you've really found a good way to work in Premiere. Your advocacy for that way of working is compelling.
Here are my concerns. Since you asked, "What's the dificulty?" I'm not a pure video editor. I'm a multimedia producer who shoots video, photos, creates tons of graphics, audio files, and a million other varied tasks, incuding needing raw files way into the future for edit in many programs. If all I did was edit video then it would be fine. Lots of random files, forgotten about later. No big deal. But, for me, I'll need those source files again. And I'll want them when I jump to After Effects, ScreenFlow, or need a single fram to screen cap. I won't want the whole Premiere Project. Just one quick file.
Also, I recall very vividly when Adobe dumped Premiere for mac. So, I have no intention of relying on it as my long-term file management solution. Once bitten... as the old cliche goes.
Finally, what about Log and Transfer is tedious? I find it relaxing. Honestly. When I said "elegant" I meant it. It's one of my favorite bits of software. And don't we all have our little favorites? There are all the files on my card. Now I'm watching to see which takes I like. I name them, drag the winners into the box below. It's worth any wait as far as I'm concerned. Then the files are name clearly in my folder.
In the end, my feeling is that if Premiere really wants to play hardball, they ought to step up and help everyone with whatever workflow get files in, using the method they like. It's a shame because they are 1/2 way there with the File Browser thing. They could just add on bit of functionality, "Import to 'file' in 'format'." Cha ching! -
Log and transfer crashes when converting to 422 from avchd from sony fs700
trying to import AVChd files shot on a Sony FS700.
the files are on average one hour or more.
Need to import as 422 HQ
log and transfer sees the files but FCP 7 crashes every time
I've tried using PavTube to convert but files over 10 minutes are segmented in chunks ranging from 10 minutes to 11 minutes when the source file is long. Also the media slips out of sync over time.
I have had success with short files in FCP 7 via log and transfer but anything long results in the crash.
is this just a limitation? IS there a fix for this?
thanks

seems like some formats that the camera shoots are not compatible. Not sure if this applies to your footage, but you might want to try clipwrap to do the conversion.
http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
It's not very expensive and there's a free trial to test the workflow.
Don't think there are any updates for fcp that will help this, but you might try doing a software update and see if there's anything that looks likely. -
Log and Transfer AVCHD footage
Hello,
got a bizarre situation here with trying to log and transfer AVCHD footage: It's worked perfectly fine before, the volume automatically showing up in the Log and Transfer window. I shot additional footage on the same card (without erasing the older footage) and now nothing shows up in the Log and Transfer window. File structure on the card is intact, FCP seetings (ProRes LT) are the same and I can see the footage is there on the camera. Whatever I try, I can't get FCP to 'see' the card's content, not even the older footage which it transferred alright before.
I'm running FCP 6.0.6 and the only difference I can think of to the previous time when log and transfer worked is that I may have updated FCP (not sure what my previus version was, but it was only an incremental update).
I'm totally at aloss with this one – anyone out there with a clue what might be causing this?
Thanks in advance!
DesTry using the add volume button and pointing to the card, which I assume is mounted on the desktop. If you select the volume do the clips load?

Log and Transfer in FCP7 from Firestore HD100
I recently did the upgrade from FCP6 to FCP7 in order to take advantage of the log and transfer capability for file based media. I have a JVC HD200 camera with a Firestore MR-HD100 drive attached. I have as yet had no luck at all getting FCP7 to recognize a file from the HD100 drive in any configuration.
Am I missing something or will the FCP7 log and transfer application not work with files generated with this drive? No, we DO get the point. We know exactly what you want to do...you just chose a shooting format that doesn't do what you want to do. If you wanted that functionality you should have chosen to shoot on tape, P2, SxS, or SD card. Or used the firestore with a P2 camera and shot using the P2 file structure. You chose a camera that shoots directly to QT and therefore does not have that functionality.
As it is you have to retain all of the original file at full size and archive that.
Because you chose a shooting format in which you have to do that.
I chose the particular format because it offered me a specific set of features that suited my shooting needs.
What are those features that any other of the cameras that shoot to tape, P2, SxS or SD card don't offer?
That doesn't mean that I have to accept that Apple is not doing their job in covering all aspects of the professional film and editing world and making an interface addition that is substandard.
OK, name ONE NLE that would do what you want with the format you chose to shoot? Avid? Nope. Premiere...nope. Vegas? Nope. Edius? Nope. So is EVERYONE out there not doing their job in this case? No. You chose a format that is NOT suited to doing what you wanted to do. That is no ones fault but your own.

I am about to comence my Edit, and was told of Mpeg Streamclip, however this doesn't seem to work with my Canon XF305 Clips, the reason I was told to use it was so I wouldn't have to Render in Final Cut Pro all the time.. I do have the Canon Disc with the Plug in Utility and the update from their site.
Is it best to Convert these MXF files first and import them into FCP or use 'Log and Transfer', so far I am unable to do either!!
The projects on the timeline will have introduction .Movs already on it as a Template to re-use again and again with the new Footage ( MXF Files ) to be added and edited with transitions etc..This process is repeated again and again but with different MXF clips each time.
I am looking for the quickest and best way for workflow as there are 80 or more projects to do, each with 10 or so clips to be added to the timeline and Exported for DVD...Will I have to then Compress to fit onto DVD's??
I know Streamclip is an Mepeg 2 app but I thought the Canon XF305 Shot as mpeg2....
Is Log and Transfer my only Option?
Basically I need to know the quickest for Render purposes, and of course, the best way so the files aren't so huge etc etc.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly received....We only work with PR422 files in FC7. We use Shane's workflow with all 5D & MXF footage.
Make your life easier and stick to the ProRes family for your footage and edit sequences. Avoid H264 & convert any you have to ProRes.
Unless you are considering Blu-Ray the only way to deliver video on a DVD is to convert it to SD.
Depending on the length of your show you can make a Blu-Ray in Compressor but you have very limited authoring options when compared to DVD Studio Pro.
Compressor can also convert your HD to SD mpg-2 & Ac3 files. The best results usually come from setting the frame controls in the mpg-2 setting of Compressor to best. Depending on the the length of the show and your Qmaster settings this can take quite a while.
I personally find Compressor's HD to SD DVD conversion varies. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes not so much. I prefer the following as it is usually is faster and very consistent.
Export a quicktime movie (not QT conversion) of your final sequence
Import the exported HD file back into FC.
Create a SD 16x9 sequence and then drop in the recently exported HD seq and render. Rendering the sequence basically has FC doing the HD to SD conversion. Export the SD sequence and then convert to mpg-2 & ac3 in Compressor. While this does take time I still find it faster than Compressor with Qmaster utilizing all cores.
Another option is using jobs in Compressor
http://pixelcorps.cachefly.net/macbreak-154-540p-h264.mov
In this workflow you would have Compressor convert the HD file to SD and then through jobs convert the SD file to mpg2 & Ac3.
In theory the jobs version could be faster (based on a number of variables- length, Qmaster, etc) but I haven't had time to compare the two. -
I used to be able to download files from the Harddrive of my Sony Handycam, but now it won't let me import them while going through "log and transfer." I have tried to update my settings, but this doesn't seem to work. Any help would be much appreciated
Hard Drive: The Hard Drive is on my camera (Sony Handycam)
Just needed some info on what is going on with your particular system.
Knowing the exact camera model will also assist us.
If this camera is standard AVCHD you should be able to connect with USB to Mac with FCE open and use Log and Transfer without all the fiddling around converting etc.
What FCE does during ingest is convert files to AIC. (Apple Intermediate Codec)
FCE cannot read the individual files in the BDMV folder, that's why all the converting is required when you use that method.
BTW: regards formatting drives/cards/memory on cameras; it is wise to use the actual device to format rather than a computer. This is a prime cause of read/write goof ups with solid state media. This applies to still or video cameras.
Keeping the COMPLETE card/memory structure in tact is vital for successful transfers.

Log and Transfer - what happens to the source files?
I'm an experienced FCE4 user, but am using Log and Transfer for the first time with my new Canon Vixia HF M30 camera. Icons for the converted files are showing up in the Browser in FCE4, but where are the underlying converted flies? I didn't copy them from the camcorder to my hard drive when I started the process.
Log and Transfer behaves the same way as Capture. The files are transferred to the Capture Scratch folder on your scratch disk.

Final Cut Express Log and Transfer files not playing audio on another mac
I recently purchased a new Mac Pro for video editing for work, and am having some issues with it. Previously i was working on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11, on Final Cut Express 4.
I used Log & Transfer to get the AVCHD videos from my Canon HF 11 onto my mac, and had no issues. Where my problems started was when I moved my video files to my new Mac Pro running OS 10.5.6. Now when I open those video files in either Quicktime or FCE, the VIDEO plays but _not the audio_. I thought maybe the video files were bad, but when I tried the original files on the new Mac, they still didn't work. I don't know if there's some codec that isn't on the new mac or if there's some other problem... I just know that my new amazing machine cannot play the files that my 3 year old one can. I'm not new to computers, but I'm not an Apple guru. Any help would be greatly appreciated!Well I can try trashing the files, but I can't log and transfer the files again, as it's months of footage that aren't on the camera anymore. But i did find something else out. The files that were recorded with the camera's built-in mic recording is fine and with sound, but the files that I used my wireless mic setup had no sound. I don't know why that is, because they worked fine on the MacBook Pro. I tried log and transferring a new clip on the Mac Pro wit;h footage using the wireless mic, and still no sound.

Log and Transfer Window unable to access all the files that were stored a P2 card
I have a 64gb P2 card that was filled to capacity (63.09gb) on a recent shoot with a Panasonic HPX170 camcorder. An addlitional 16gb card was in the second slot.
I transferred the files from the 64gb P2 card to my iMac as usual, and did not see any files to transfer on the second card. When accessing those files in FCP 6.0 I only see part of the files with the last one listed as "incomplete". Four files that I see in the P2 card transfer folder do not show up in the Log and Transfer. The LASTTEXT Clip file was transferred with a 3:07pm time, the inaccessible files end with a 3:06pm time.
I have the original 64gb P2 card in tact so I re-transferred all contents to my computer and into a new folder. When I opened a new project to see if I could access all the files, only the files I previously was able to access came up.
Have I created a FCP Log and Transfer and just need to reset something in FCP? Is there a way to recover the data/restore a path to the data via FCP so I can access all the files or is that a Panasonic issue?Oy, If it's the second or first half of a spanned clip that's missing, FCP will not import, and the camera cannot repair. There is nothing to repair, according to the camera. Files are just missing.
There are third party MXF software options that allow FCP to import the P2 files natively, without converting to QT. I wonder if they will see the MXF files, or if they too need the complete file to do so. I think most have demos.
Calibrated Softare has MXF import:
http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/products.asp
Then there's MXF4Mac:

And Raylight.

i have a 58 min pro res hq file that is a .mov. it is in a folder on my hdd. i'm trying to syn rushes by logging and transferring clips from this file but i cannot bring the said file into log and transfer. final cut putsup a window that tells me the file is in an unsupported format. and to bring in a file with a supported pathway. this i do not understand. any simple explanation as to what i'm missing?
Thanks meg. I'm trying not to have to sync all the rushes in a timeline. All rushes are in the one 58 min prores file. I wanted to, I guess, log and capture the rushes as clips that I logg in the log and transfer winnow and that it would then log and sort out the material as proxy files. I'm guessing I'm just being lazy or it can't be done. Thanks for the reply but I was looking for a differentbway round than a straight import of the whole file.

Log and transfer problem with prores files
Working on RED project. Started several months ago. Shooting and logging as we go. Project setup on FCP, RED media converted to prores422 proxy with RED software(rocketcineX) and saved on Internal 2 TB RAID. NO problems for past 4 months. Moving prores422 proxy files into FCP via Log and Transfer. (I thought this was necessary, is it?) Anyway its working just fine. Loaded a thousand or so clips to date. Last transfer was August when brought in some P2 media. Now when I go and try to bring in the prores422 proxy clips as before suddenly I get error message of "unsupported media or invalid directory structure. This even applies to all the older files that I had already transferred by log and transfer. They worked before but now they don't. Any suggestions as to why the change? The project will be conformed back to original RED r3D files after edit. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
JeffFirst, get Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion (free) and trash FCP preference files. Run Disk Utility to repair all drives (Repair Permissions on OS drive). This should be done once a week, anyway. Disk Warrior would be your last resort (and should be run once a month on your drives, anyway). If Disk Warrior won't fix the problem, you have a dead hard drive. Replace it, restore from the backup you've been making of your data on a regular basis. I mean, you do have a backup that you do almost daily for such a large and important project, right?
