Logging in as guest destroyed main account home directory.
Just quietly, I'm about ready to smash every piece of Apple hardware I have to pieces.
1. I set up guest account access
2. Logged out of my account. So far so good.
3. Logged into guest account. All normal.
4. Logged out of guest account.
5. Logged into my account. "What is this I don't even..."
6. ????
7. PROFIT!
Upon logging back into the main account, I found the default desktop.
"Strange" I thought to myself, "Still, I'm sure my old home directory is there, renamed as something else, ho-ho!"
It wasn't. My entire home directory is gone. Kaput. Aether.
Good thing you had time-machine set up, you say? I didn't. I am still waiting for my order to arrive with my sweet, external backup storage. After all, what's the worst that could happen in 3 days waiting for an external hdd for time capsule, eh?
So, I've lost iTunes library, an assignment for Uni, notes and quotes for my house renovations, everything.
Does anyone want to buy an iMac, Macbook, 3GS and an Apple TV? Some items may have gnaw-marks on them, but others are in good nick and less than a year old.

Change NAME of User Account, Home Directory, Time Capsule and Network
Hi All.
I have a small home network and I would like to do this for all four of these.
I think I have instructions on doing this for User Account, Home Directory and Time Capsule.
Can anyone give me the "it is OK to do this" so I don't have to worry about something going wrong in the future?
Also, can I do this for my network and does anyone know where I find this?

Technically, it's the name of the OSX volume or partition, but is often just called your internal hard drive, since most folks only have one partition. But some have multiple partitions, usually for dual booting, such as OSX and Windows; or Lion and Snow Leopard.
Yes, you can rename it easily (but you might check whether that will cause a problem with DejaVu). It won't be a problem for Time Machine.
Just right-click it in a Finder sidebar or on your desktop. Do not use any slashes or colons, however -- you might want to avoid any punctuation or special characters.

Yes. Each user account has a full name and a short name. The full name isn't used for much.

Correct. It's the same as the short name.
So I set the HOME FOLDER name through some hocus pocus in the article and then what is the relationship between these things?
The short name and the home folder name should be the same. The article shows how to rename the home folder, create a new user account with a matching name, then delete the old account.
If you're not comfortable with the instructions in the article, I'd strongly advise not doing it. You may end up having to do a full system restore. I don't know, but perhaps your local Apple Store will do it for you.
Functionally I have a HARD DRIVE and a HOME FOLDER and then the Full Name (listed in Accounts) is just sort of what I get called by...?
The hard drive (OSX partition) is where your entire Snow Leopard installation is: OSX itself, your Apple and 3rd-party apps, and one or more home folders. (Many folks who share a Mac have separate home folders for each user.)

FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory
Hardware
Server
Mac Mini Mid-2012, OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.1.2, OpenDirectory ON, HomeDirectory: /Volumes/HomeFolders/Users
Client
iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012, OS X 10.9.5, MobileAccount
Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing. I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created. I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync. I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them. The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file. I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process. I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Solaris 10 NIS Client user account home directory
Hi all,
I am newbie of NIS in solaris and i am setting up NIS(central authentication of user) ,So related to this i have setup and server and client but
i am getting problem while accessing user account in client side.
in client side i can login user which i have created in server but it is not able to find its home dir .even though i added user with the -m option on server and home dir of user is created in server side .
*(No directory! Logging in with home=/)*which i have created in NIS server.
also i am not able to create any directories or files in the client system it says.

Can not login after changing account short name and home directory
Hi,
I did sth rather stupid while trying a get timemachine working on my iMac 10.5.5.
I changed the short name, login shell and home directory of my account. (didn't listen to the waning that I may not be able to login if I change those information Now I can not log into my account anymore. I tried to use fileVault master password to change the password of my account, but it didn't help. Can anyone tell me how do I fix this problem?

I noticed you said in one of the previous posts that if you cd into the main user home directory you only see user.sparseimage. It actually should be user.sparsebundle. Or have you upgraded to leopard from tiger with filevault turned on? then it could have remained sparseimage rather than sparsebundle.
run the following in terminal
sudo ls -la /users/username
and post the results.
does it list sparsebundle or sparseimage?
Another thing, when I typed in the command, it didn't take the admin (root) password, but the password of the account I was logged in got me through.
that's what it has to be. it takes the password of the user (it jhas to be an admin user) which is currently logged in.
I am wondering if I can recover the problem user's files from the sparseimage file, then copied all the files to a new user.

Lost Main Account After Upgrade
I just installed a security update. After the restart, I am taken to the log in screen, but my main account is not one of the options. It only shows my sister's, which was created just for a weekend (in other words we don't remember the password). Occasionally it goes from my sister's as being the only option to "Other". When I click to log in as other it asks for a name and password. I have used my accounts name and password, but it won't accept.
Does anyone know what has happened and how I can fix it?

First we should do this to help make sure the rest works right...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more. (This step rarely works for this problem, but has a couple of times).

So I want to create a new folder within my main user home directory (not the root directory) just for my developer-related files? I can do this from Finder, although it does prompt me for my password to do so. However, when using 'Save As' from any app, the 'New Folder' button is greyed out when I select my user home directory. So I have to create the folder in Finder then Save As.
Is this normal behavior? Is OSX discouraging me from adding things to my user home directory by making it less convenient? Is there a good reason it would be discouraging me from creating new folders there? If not, is there a setting that I can change to allow the creation of new folders from the Save As prompt?

BYou may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this,boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type: ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

Reshare mounted NFS Home Directory
Hi there,
I have a XServe with Leopard Server 10.5.8 installed.
Open Directory works fine, I mean users are known through the network and they can log on every computer with ssh, their home directory is well automounted by clients. Their home dirs are stored locally on the server.
I would try something new in order to win space:
1. create user dirs locally on the clients
2. export them on the network
3. mount them through NFS or AFP on the server and reshare it on the network as user dir.
item 1. is done : the local user get the uid and gid of the network user, permissions are OK on his home dir.
item 2. is OK : via NFS
item 3. seems OK because I mkdir /AFP-Users where I mount via NFS remote user dir (e.g. bob). Then I export /AFP-Users as automatic Users Home Dirs in addition to /Volumes/External/User where native OD accounts are.
I have specified in OD that Home dir of bob is nfs://server/AFP-Users/bob.
It works fine if I make a su - bob on the server : files are here and bob is able to write.
bob is able to ssh on every computer on the network, no error msg on login but no files! And no permissions to write.
If someone has an idea...

I tried to simply mount AFP directory from a client to another, but unable to have permissions on the Terminal because the owner of the mounted AFP is local admin instead of the OD user...
I would very appreciate if anyone has an beginning of an idea.

Home Directory on Active Directory
I am attempting to have the OS X users upon logging in, gain automatic access to their home directory in my W2K server. As an example, when I log in via the "Other" user, my home folder from the W2K server becomes my Home directory. All the necessary files from OS X seem to be resident in my W2K home directory so if I go to the Home item under the Go menu, that is the folder that appears. No local Home directory was/is created on the local machine. I am trying to have it so that all users work this way. If I try to log on as any other user including another Administrative user, the same does not occur, a local Home directory is always created and I must log onto the server through the Go menu to get the Home Directory. I cannot seem to find anything different with the settings on either the W2K server's Active Directory User Properties or in the Directory Access settings. So, in a nutshell, what do I need to do to make this work the way I'd like.

I have attempted this with various users with varying levels of authority without finding the common thread yet. I've come to the conclusion that it has something more to do with permissions and/or settings on the AD or server volume rather than an OS X issue. My mac only starts on guest user and cant log in to my main account
I left my mac alone for like 10 minutes and it shut off alone( or dont know what happened) and when it restarted it went to guest account automatically. What can i do to log in to my main account!!

Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive -
So was trying to use install disk ! to solve the problem but did not want to reinstall the system because I have not backed up many of my photographs. Then the disk got stuck and would not come out so when I shut down and restarted I could not get past the gray screen. Well I was able to solve the problem and remove the disk, and finally it would load to the login screen, although it took some time to get there. Then when I log in to my main account the desktop will load but the task bar and icons will not its completely blank except for the wall paper. When I login into my guest account there is not a problem everything is there and functional. I've been researching but have had no luck on a solution. Thank you for your help.

Could be many things, we should start with this...

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward. -

Ever since I downloaded the software update for OS X 10.5.4, Safari hangs and will not open a browser window. However, I created a guest account and Safari opens just fine in that account.

Can't log into main account and vanished files...?
Hello forums.
Last night I was trying to get rid of some junk on my computer, emptying a lot of files in my Trash. Cleaned up my desktop... everything going smoothly. Turned off the computer.
I realized there was something fishy this morning when I turned my imac (tiger) on, logged onto my main account(admin), and my desktop was the default aqua wallpaper. My dock was still personalized and my documents were still there. Still I went ahead and created another user account under "Budiana" with admin power... so now I have total three users, the Admin (under my real name), Budiana, and my dad's.
I did fiddle around with changing the names, but not the short names... I think that might've caused the problem. I'm a bit of a noob with computers in general...
Anyway, now I can't log back into my main account. The message says "You cannot log in as ___ at this time." and the box "shakes" at me. So now I've resorted to using my second account. Looking in Finder, under Users, I see the three accounts, but none of all my files that exist under the admin. But looking at the bottom of the finder window : 168Gb available disk space, with a total of about 236Gb memory, I don't think my files are actually lost, just vanished somewhere!
I've taken a look at the "lost" home directory support document on the apple website, and tried it, but nothing seems to work. I'm also a little lost..
I've tried resetting the passwords for all accounts using the Tiger disk, but to no avail.

I see only two folders desktop & library. Maybe something is hidden. See point 3.
1) I suggest you do a total backup of your machine or at least /Users.
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive. I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. ) Once created, you can run your system from the external drive. Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine. This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer.
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
The latest the hard drive enclosures support the newer serial ata drives. The drive and closure that I list supports only older parallel ata.

For cryptic comments, you can always uses the manual command which is man. For example:
man mv
# Type the letter q to quit.
I noticed that you had spaces in your filenames or directories. You need to escape them. See examples:
mac $ ls -l ~/"see it"

Do you know about tabing? Type in a few letters of a name then press the tab key. The computer will type out the rest of the name if it is unique.
How you ignore permissions.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
sudo ls
change what is in quotes to the name of your program. You need to run this from an administrator account and you will be asked for your administrator password. Type it in. the password will not show. Press return when done.
You can put yourself in root & forget about permission problems via:
sudo bash
type:
exit
when done.
Be careful. I you limit yourself to the ls & cd commands you cannot cause trouble.

MacBook - Logging into Main Account Stalls
This is my first question/ post ever so I hope I am providing enough info:
I'm trying to assist my wife with a MacBook (Aluminum from around 2009)
Running OSX v10.6.8 - Intel Core 2 Duo w 2.4 GHz- 4 GB Memory - 250 GB HD (only 6.7 GB available - not sure if this matters)
She had no issues yesterday morning... battery died, plugged into power and left for the day (around 1:00 PM) left it powered on, lid shut, charging.
Around 6:00 PM opened lid and had nothing on screen but the "purple galaxy" space theme picture ....
She did a hard reboot (powered off with power button).
When Login Screen appeared ... She typed her password, then the screen goes into the "purple galaxy / space" theme on screen and doesn't proceed to her desktop.
Today I tried to log into her "Guest" account that does not require a password and can log into that account and have access to that desktop.
I'm stumped as to why we cannot log into her Main Account. I've tried a couple options on start up (holding Command-Option-P-R) and I've tried holding (Shift when it powers on.) The grey screen with the Apple Logo appears, but no chime this morning, until I held Command-Option-P-R.
I've tried powering off and back on with power cord plugged in and without. I've been reading stuff all morning from the Apple Support communities and have nothing that seems to fix the problem.
I'm trying to run a Permissions Repair from the Guest account, but not sure of any other steps to take. Any advice/ suggestions are appreciated.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert a Mac OS X install DVD, restart with the Option key held down, click on it, and use the Reset Password utility.
If you don't have a clone backup it's time to start. Just like a seat belt and an air bag protect you in different ways when driving, you need both Time Machine and a clone for full protection.

A clone is an exact bootable copy of your internal drive. Unlike standard copying of all files to another drive, the clone software copies hidden files along with other in-use files that are not avaialbe when you copy over files to another drive.

Time Machine is not bootable. You can only restore from Time Machine.

Use Disk Utility to clone your drive:
1. Select your new volume (indented) and click on the "Restore" tab.
2. Drag your old volume to the Source field
3. Drag your new hard drive to the Destination field.
4. Click the check box for "Erasing Destination".
5. Click restore at the bottom and it then will start copying over to your new hard drive. -
Guest player name on main account?
Hi there, Since I accidently shut off the power of ps4 and went back online something changed and I don't understand how. When I'm logged in on my account, which is the main account on my ps4 and go to Profile, it says:'my name ' + (ps plus sign)'name of a guest player account' Why is the name under my accountname the name of a guest player?Also when I play some games it uses that certain name instead of my name..... I tried deleting the guest player account but nothing has changed. As soon as I push X on Profile the name changed into my gamename, but still when I play some games it uses the guestplayername Does anybody have any idea how to change this? Another user account is a good idea to test, however, a guest account does not store the data or user information when you log out.
If you reinstalled 10.6, the default reinstall is like an "archive", and only reinstalls the 10.6 os, not removing user specific settings or data.
If you booted to the 10.6 install disk and ran repair disk and it ran without errors, then you could try safe boot. On restart, hold down shift key. You will see an apple/gear and blue progress bar. Don't be surprised if it takes 2-3 minutes longer to get to the "safe boot" login screen
Login and test. Check your system preferences > accounts > login items. Remove any unnecessary third party items > select the item and select minus sign.
Open a finder window, go to your hard drive, library, startup items > remove any third party items there.
Restart out of safe mode and test.
Otherwise, there are two options left: create a new administrative account to bring the data alone into that or do an erase in disk utility then install. It does appear a user corruption so far. As always, backup of data is the best, however restoring from a time machine backup may not fix the issue, just bring it back. Hope this helps.
