Logic 8: MacBook Pro issue
Hello,
I recently installed Logic 8 on my MacBook Pro. I have the early-2009 model, with the multitouch trackpad. I seem to have a very annoying issue with Logic - basically everytime I try scrolling through the track, it keeps on zooming the track in and out, automatically, instead of moving the vertical bar along the track, horizontally. I seem to be unable to scroll through the screen anyhow. Is there any way of turning it off? To be honest this renders any kind of work impossible, as I have to keep on zooming out to an acceptable point using sliders on the bottom right hand corner every 10 to 15 seconds or so.
Any kind of tip would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks,
Dynamitri
The zoom effect is probably because your two fingers are not moving precisely in parallel and the macbookpro is unhelpfully thinking you want to zoom rather than scroll. Yes you can turn it off in system preferences/trackpad by unticking the Pinch Open Close box. Practising the multitouch gestures may also be useful, it took me some time to do them properly.

Logic Studio, MacBook pro, M-Audio ProFire 610, M-Audio Axiom 61
I'm just about to get the above: Logic Studio, MacBook Pro, M-Audio ProFire 610 and the M-Audio Aziom 61, and want to know if any of the above (Logic Studio and MacBook Pro excluded) are a big mistake. I've been using an Aluminium Powerbook 17" 1.33MHz, and M-Audio MobilePre USB, and an Edirol controller, with guitar rig (and Controller), and Logic Express 7.
I need a set-up that will work as well in the studio, as it does on stage. We tend to plug everything in to the powerbook at the moment, and use Reason to power the synths, guitar rig for the guitars and bass, and logic express plugins for vocals etc.
Anyone have any experience with any of the above?
Cheers,
AdamHi Zuelito,
Please read my first paragraph again:
"I gotta RESPECTFULLY take issue with every point you bring up about M-Audio stuff, Zuelito..."
I'm not sure how you can be "slightly put off by the tenor" of my post given everything I said, with the one possible exception being my line about MOTU making crappy hardware - and that was based on personal experience. And while we're talking about the opinions of others, feel free to peruse the Unicornation board - it's full of MOTU users talking about firewire port failures and other hardware issues - so it appears neither of us is alone in our experiences
Seriously, if I was in some way brash or offensive in the way my post came off, I publicly and sincerely apologize. I really try to think about what I say (and how I say it) when posting on the 'net, for this very reason. I thought I simply stated my experience in an informative manner; again, please re-read my post - I hope it comes across as intended.
For what it's worth, I will say (even more clearly) that I've always loved MOTU products in terms of feature set; maybe that's why I've owned almost every product they've ever made! However, in my environment, I simply can't risk hardware failures, and their stuff has let me down too many times to keep rolling the dice. I will also divulge that one of their top tech support guys has acknowledged the firewire port problem. That's a shame, because they do make great stuff, conceptually. I really wish I could take a chance on that new 896mk3, but it ain't gonna happen for me; 6 dead firewire ports is enough of a failure rate for me to give up on them. To be fair, this probably isn't an issue for fixed installations, but I have to make these connections daily while on tour.
Also, I did NOT categorically state that "M-Audio stuff is better than MOTU." Again, if you re-read my post, it should be obvious that all I'm saying is I have a newfound respect for M-Audio, as of the new ProFire series. I also said in my first paragraph that I shared your opinion of M-Audio for a long time!
If this were all about M-Audio's 410 vs. MOTU's Ultralite (or other competition), we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion as I would have agreed with you - but the original poster specifically asked about the newer 610 with Logic, which is what I'm using on one of my rigs. I simply offered my personal experience.
As for drivers, I've not had any problems with M-Audio or their level of support. Just the opposite - they really seem to be on the ball and are way more communicative than other mfrs. I don't know of any other mfr. that supports each OS subrelease in detail like they do, and their development speed seems as fast (if not faster) than anyone else.
Finally, until now I've only owned a few M-Audio pieces (410, 1814), but I can state that they've been flawless. Their audio quality was not 'high end' by any stretch, but I only used them for utility purposes (writing rigs on the road, etc.). Like I said, my main studio stuff has been RME or Apogee for years, and that's the quality level I'm used to - which is why the 610 really surprised me. I also have several friends who do a LOT of touring, many of which rely on M-Audio hardware (mostly 410s). One guy's unit doesn't even have any paint left on it from road abuse - but it still works like a champ after 4 years.
So anyway, this is all just my experience. Hope it doesn't come across as anything but that
Peace,
Jim -
New External Monitor for Logic on MacBook Pro - Suggestions
I'm in the painful process of updating my studio and now my large screen external monitor has started failing.
I know if this a pretty general question more suited to the MacBook Pro forum but I'd like some input from folks used to working with an application like Logic in a home studio environment.
I guess the issue for me is that I'm not getting any younger and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. One of the things specific to Logic and music software in general is that there are LOTS of very detailed dialog boxes with text that is not always height adjustable (yes I know about zooming and indeed I do lots of that but it gets quite distracting). The other factor is that I'm often recording and engineering myself which means I'll be sitting with a guitar in my lap or at a keyboard and can't always lean in too close to the monitor.
I solved this by buying a large 26" Acer which sits on my desk behind the Mackie MCU. To my left I've got the MacBook 15.4" Pro on a keyboard stand above my MIDI controller at a 45 degree angle to the desk.
It's worked quite well until the Acer seems to have become haunted. It will mysteriously reboot itself intermittently, going blank for a second, then showing the Acer logo and going back to picture. It will also turn itself on spontaneously when the computer is off (the status light is off and then turns itself on). It seems to detect when I'm in the middle of a really good session and starts resetting itself every 30 seconds or so. Then it will work fine sometimes for days or weeks at a time. I've checked it on 4 different computers, it malfunctions on all. I believe in may be a problem with one of the capacitors or the inverter, I'm not sure, but it's driving CRAZY at this point.
And of course now it's 3 months out of warranty and may be more expensive to fix than buying a new one.
So my issue is what monitor to replace it with. I've considered buying an Apple monitor, since the display is lovely to look at but there are a couple things that are deal breakers.
It's expensive. Very expensive.
Oddly you have to choose between a 24" and a 30", with nothing in between. Don't want to sound like Goldilocks here, but the 24 is tooooo small and the 30 is tooooo big.
Yeah I know bigger is usually better but since they bumped the native resolution of the 30" up to 2560x1600 it's really sharp but things like the menu text get really quite small. Yes you can reset to a lower non native resolution, but then you loose the sharpness. I tested Logic in the store on the 30" and it did look great but I found I actually had to move my whole body around to see things at the top and bottom of the screen.
Oh and did I mention that it's expensive? Jeez.
The 24" now seems to look a bit small to me after using the same resolution (1920x1200) on the Acer's 26" screen. (Ok, I think it's actually 25.5 but hey that half an inch can make a big difference and I will avoid making any bad jokes here).
And did I mention the Apple monitors are expensive? The 24" is almost 3 times as expensive as a cheaper alternative.
I also still have a PC here that I use (sorry) and the Apple monitors have very limited connectivity. So I think unfortunately the Apple monitors are out for me.
So I;m down to a couple other non Apple options. I will not buy an Acer again since I believe now that their quality control is not good and their support is absolutely atrocious. Shame I used to be a big fan of Acer PC's, but after owning a couple I'm steering clear.
My biggest issue right now is that most of the new budget monitors are geared toward 1080p HD uses so they are they are maxing out at 1920x1080 (16:9 aspect ratio instead of 1920x1200's 16:10). So the tradeoff here is that HD movies will look better in 16:9, but 16:10 gives you "squarer" pixels and more vertical resolution for screen hungry apps like Logic.
Any opinions on this? I'm a bit new to the Mac so I don't know if I'm really better off going with a 1920x1200 screen like the Apple monitors.
Also, I know this may just be a bug in the Acer's scaling, but if I switch to 1920x1080, I lose the menus off the top of the screen or if I adjust the vpos I lose the dock at the bottom. Downscaling to 1600x1050 or even 1024x768 works fine. If I get a 1080 screen and set the resolution appropriately will it work correctly and without too much distortion?
I'm also curious what is the best way to hook up the monitor? I'm currently using the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the MacBook. My Pro is the slighter older silver keyboard model so it has the standard DVI out. Will I see any real improvement by going over to using DVI directly?
Also I'm wondering how people feel about glossy vs matte for music. My current displays are the non-glossy and I do think I prefer them for detail work.
The candidates right now are
Hanns-G HH-281HPB 28" @300$. It's one of the only budget monitors that uses 1920x1200. All the right inputs (DVI, VGA). I'm just afraid this might be a bit too good to be true. It's really cheap and after having problems with a "cheap" Acer (although it wasn't so cheap 3 years ago!) I don't want similar problems. Stand has no swivel or tilt (a big problem for my use). Also that resolution on such a big screen might be good for me or it might look grainy I don't know I haven't seen it. Anybody have any experience with these?
Samsung P2770H 27" @339 Looks nice, good color. Sadly only 1080 native resolution. Stand doesn't swivel, but does tilt. No VGA input, so won't work with my old PC (although strangely it says it comes with a VGA cable). They get generally good reviews and I know Samsung makes very good flat panel TV's.
ViewSonic X Series VX2739WM 27" @350. Once again maxes out at 1080. It's fast (1ms), has VGA input. I've never been a big fan of ViewSonic but they do seem to have gotten better color-wise. Tilt no swivel and it's anti-glare (not sure this is a plus).
There are also similar options from HP, Asus, LG and Sceptre but they are all 1080. In fact outside of the Apples, the Hanns-G and a few expensive monitors from NEC they all seem to be 1080. So if I really want the 1200 the Hanns-G seems like the only way to go.
Any input here would be greatly appreciated. No doubt, the Apple displays are gorgeous. The first time I saw the 30" display wow, I wanted one BAD and it's actually what prompted me to buy a "big" monitor. The colors are great with a rich wonderful saturation level and as usual for Apple the form factor design is stunning. You know for that picture quality I could even get over the sticker shock and save up for one.
Which is why I was so disappointed when I actually sat down in the store and started to use Logic on one. I imagine for doing video work, graphic design or darn near anything else, it would be great. But for Logic I just found myself bending and twisting trying to look at toolbar at the bottom and then up to look at the menus. And instrument or plugin displays that were hard coded to look OK at lower resolutions looked really, really tiny to me. For me and particularly using Logic having 2 slightly smaller displays at a 45 degree angle makes more sense.
And once again the 24 seems just a bit small. I don't understand why they have a 27" iMac but you can't buy a 27" display. So iMac 27" starting at 1699, subtract out the cost of the CPU and drive ie the Mini and I'd really buy one. Strangely you can buy a 21.5" or a 27" iMac. Or you can buy a 24" or 30" display. Hmmmm.
So don't get me wrong I'm not bashing Apple for being expensive. They put a lot of money into R&D and into really thinking about the form and the function of their products. As a recent convert from being a PC developer for 25+ years, hey I've more than sipped the Kool-Aid here, I've guzzled it. They make great products and yeah they're more expensive, because they ARE better! I've now got 2 MBP's, 2 iPods, I'm about to get an iPhone (silly "death grip" or not) and I really want an iPad. Heck I'd really love an 8 core MacPro if I could afford one (alas I can't).
I guess my only gripe here is that there always seems to be a little less choice in the Apple world. Yeah, I know they do a lot less volume than the PC clone world I just think that they always seem to have a big gap between the high end and low end with not enough in between. So you can choose between the lower end and one piece units with no expansion boards (the mini or the iMac) or go straight to monster tower MacPro (way over 3K with display). You can get a MacBook but then you have to put up with a small screen or go with MacBook Pro, which let's face it is a lot of computing power for someone who just wants to web surf and write some email without squinting.
So here I am stuck in the middle. I don't want to buy a HannspreeQG or another piece of junk that's going to last 3 years and 3 months because of a crappy $2 capacitor that no seems to able to fix or care about fixing. I'd like to buy a really nice Apple monitor, I just want a big monitor, not a huge one and not a "medium" one (I know I'm spoiled but 24" seems "medium" these days).
Sorry about the rant here but my monitor is shutting down every 30 seconds and I'm about to go completely insane and toss it out the window!!!
Really glad to hear about that 84' VGA cable. I never imagined such a thing existed or would work without some sort of signal boost on the way. Very cool for me. My electronic drum kit is in another room and I would love to have a small cheap monitor next to it for sequencing. I had my laptop on a stand next to it for a while but I began to get terrified that I'd let a drumstick slip and destroy my laptop screen. That would be a very bad thing. Thanks for the tip. -
Macbook Pro issue - advice needed
Hi!
I have mid 2010 15” i5 2.53 Macbook Pro that has quite famous Nvidia 330m problem, it works fine when it uses integrated graphics, however it randomly crashes after switching to Nvidia.
I am a graphic designer so I need to use adobe programs such as Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects etc, also I need reliable machine, it’s really annoying when I sometimes lose something I’ve been working for hours after computer crashes (I tend to save everything after each modification but sometimes I won’t be able to when it crashes randomly).
It worked alright before while using Snow Leopard, issue started after upgrading to Mountain Lion, then, even after downgrading to Snow Leopard, problem stayed. I tried to get apple to fix it free of charge under their policy for this problem last year however they said that macbook showed signs of liquid damage so they wouldn’t, they quoted me for about £670 for total repair - I didn’t agree on this.
I’ve been looking for some ways to fix it, I upgraded to Mavericks recently and after that macbook was crashing pretty much all the time after few seconds after start up when I was trying to do something on it, when I was using Snow Leopard it tend to crash only 1-4 times a day.
I’ve found the idea with the blanket forcing it to heat, I have removed battery, plugged AC adapter, positioned turned on mac upside down on the edge of my bed (open lid) covered it with blankets and left it for an hour. To my surprise, after it cooled down it was working much better even tho I was using mavericks, it didn’t crash at all for about 2 hours, then crashed once, then it kept going for even 6 hours without crashing which was really good considering previous situations. The problem is, it still crushes sometimes, and I can’t risk losing my work.
There are still some ways I haven’t try yet like:
Putting logic board into the oven for 7 mins
Trying to heat logic board (Nvidia chipset) with hair dryer
Also, there is a repair centre on ebay that fixes this exact issue, apparently permanently by fitting brand new updated GPU Chipset that has been purposely produced by Nvidia to replace the Faulty GPU Chipset - this will cost about £180 including return delivery, and they provide 6 months warranty - there was over 100 happy customers with this problem and it seems like they fixed it
I would prefer to spend as little money as possible, and I have no problem with the speed of my macbook pro, 4gb Ram (currently using 2GB as one stick got broken so it does work slowish, but I will buy another 2gb stick on Monday - or should I get 4gb making overall ram 6gb? will this make much difference?) also, I was thinking about updating HDD to either Crucial 256GB SSD or Seagate Momentus XT 500 and then use my currently installed HDD as external HDD as I have planned to buy external HDD anyway.
Of course, getting the machine professionally fixed and upgrading it would cost me less than spending loads of money (over £1000) for brand new 13” retina mac, I also like 15” screen, even tho 13” retina has higher resolution, build in DVD is beneficial as well.
What do you guys think? Any experience with similar problem? If so what was your solution? BTW, what was the highest amount of money you've ever spent to fix your macbook pro that was out of warranty?
Sorry for quite long post
Thanks!Yes, they specifically fix Nvidia 330m problem, they state that the only true solution is to remove old chipset with their brand new chipset that has been apparently released by Nvidia as an update for this issue, this is exactly what they say:
What faults can we fix?
We can fix graphic/display issues relating to the 15" / 17" Nvidia 330M models in 2010 Models. These are fixed using the appropriate professional equipment.
Brand New Chipset Repair - (only option we recommend for Macbook Pro Nvidia Models) With this procedure we re-fit a Brand New Nvidia GPU Chipset reballed in leaded solder.
**** Special Offer - £10 off making the Brand New Chipset Repair £169 + Post! ****
They also provide photos of certain logic board (including photo of serial number) with old chip, chip removed and new chip installed as a proff.
Thanks! -
Macbook Pro issues, Randomly logs me out, takes several attempts to boot from sleep
Hi there,
I bought my macbook pro (2013, I5) about 9 months ago. Recently I've been having issues where start-ups will take several attempts before I can finally load my desktop. Coming out of sleep, oftne times I can't move my mouse or type into the password box, the screen will then go dark, I hit escape to bring the login screen back up but once again I can't do a thing. This will happen a few times until I can finally get in.
In the last week as well, I've had a few occurences where I'll be in the middle of typing out a word document, and I'll get logged out for no reason. Luckily I can recover my work but it's stilla nuisance.
The system diagnostics report for the last such event is below.

I have taken it into the genius bar for all this, and the laptop cleared all their tests, so I have no idea what to do. Any help is appreciated!BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps? -
Macbook Pro issues - can anyone tell if 'normal' or faults
I have some issues with my new 15" 2.66 unibody (non-removable batery) MBP. I'm told by the retailer that they are all normal/common - i'd like see if this is actually the case or they fobbing me off.
1.) Something 'lose' inside the case around hard drive area - ie if i move the mac around (vertically is worst - ie imagine holding it with two hands with hinge sitting downwards, closed) i can hear something fairly hefty clunking back and forth against the inside of the shell (hard drive moving about?)
2.) When i opn the lid for the first time after a period of the mac being closed, i get a reasonable creak/crack from the left side of the screen hinge.
3.) When i run the battery down and it goes to sleep 'to preserve the contents of memory' it doesn't take long at all before battery so low it goes into deep sleep (ie state where all RAM contents are written to disk - and then takes a min or so to come to life again when you open the lid - my old macbook pro could last a good few hours in sleep mode before dying completely and deep sleeping
I'd really like to know if anyone has noticed similar issues with their machines - or if indeed these are isolated issues to a few, aka faults.
Thanks in advance1.) The sudden motion sensor may make the appearance of something bouncing in there as it may activate while the drive is being moved around suddenly. However, if this does not appear to be the case, I'd ask an authorized service center.

Is the opening range different from other ones in the store?

The battery may need calibration at first:

If it is calibrated, and you aren't getting the life expected by that link for rudimentary usage, have the power manager looked at. -
MacBook Pro issues...
I have a MacBook Pro (MacBookPro3,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz) purchased in 2008. I have AppleCare that will expire in 2011.
The issues I am having, some since I purchased it:
- Display at times will get a purplish/ blueish hue, fixed when I go under System Preferences > Displays and click the resolution setting (which is not changed, but seems to be clicked) and then it works properly.
- The DVD/ CD drive seems to be acting up. A DVD that works on an older iBook G4 without issue spins like crazy in my MacBook Pro, making quite a bit of noise and then ends up with an error.
- The keyboard, that has never had anything spilled on it and is in a smoke free environment, has issues with keystrokes, whereby as I am typing I have to go back and press the key harder for it to stroke.
- Battery life is terrible. If I can get 90 minutes on the battery I am lucky.
- The Apple Mouse, well same issue as everyone else, that ball needs to be cleaned almost every day to partially work (purchased on the same bill with the computer.)
Guess my question is probably my answer and is to get to the Genius bar and have them take care of this, but I can't be without a computer and wondering how Apple handles these issues.
Thanks in advance for your help!Sam,
You would need to take it in to really get an accurate assessment of how Apple will handle it. I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar and try to tackle each issue one by one. The issues they can look at would be the display, the SuperDrive and your keyboard. The others you can tackle before going in.
If they do take it in for repair you will need to be without the machine so you should have a backup computer plan going in.
As far as the battery life, batteries are consumables so yours may be nearing the end of it's life assuming you have properly cared for it. You should prepare to purchase a replacement if needed. If you haven't already I would recommend reading this article on battery maintenance.
Regarding your mouse, I would call Apple immediately and see if they will send you a replacement using your Applecare. When they send you a new one they will take a credit card number to ensure you send back the old mouse, once they received it they will release your the hold on your credit card.
That should handle it however you should make preparations to be without your computer for the display, SuperDrive and keyboard issues.

Roger -
I've just ordered a 2.2ghz MacBook Pro (4GB, 200GB 7200rpm), mostly for Logic use. I'll be using it out live using Mainstage, so reliability/smoothness is very important.
So, I'd like to keep at least part of the machine 100% dedicated to music production, to give myself the best chance of a fully reliable, clean and stable system.
BUT, as it is such a powerful machine (and much more powerful than my main machine: a PowerMac G5 with 1GB RAM), I would like to use it for other things too - iMovie for importing/editing video, occasional internet use, and Windows XP/bootcamp, mainly for games like Bioshock/Halflife etc.
So, my question is: could I split my internal HD into 2 partitions, each with its own separate Leopard system - one for just Mainstage with all relevant samples/sounds/settings etc. (inc. no wireless use or anything at all that's not related to Mainstage) that I'll use live, and the second partition for everything else (inc. Logic itself, as the reliability isn't so important back at home/studio).
Then, when I'm using Mainstage live, I'll start up from the "Mainstage" system on my internal HD, and when I'm doing all the other stuff, I'll start up from the other (larger) partition.
Would this be effective in keeping the music system clean, and keeping out all the crap etc. that will come with internet use/Windows on the other partition?Well, in my opinion, partioning into two different Mac systems is pointless. Providing you are not installing hundreds of system extensions and oddball utilities, OSX is plenty happy running applications reliably.
You should see what I do with my humble Powerbook, which in addition to music does everthing from programming/web development/graphics/motion graphics/video editing and a lot more besides, as well as general use.
A dual-partition system is really pretty pointless, unless you absolutely want a clean system uninterfered with - but unles you're doing something silly, there isn't any real reason this system should run better than the other system. You're just needlessly duplicating a lot of files and taking up valuable internal drive space on a laptop fixed drive.
So, personally, I wouldn't bother.
Note - the windows stuff won't interfere with your OSX stuff at all. -
Macbook pro issues (hardware or software)
Dear friends,
I am starting to lose faith in apple products... My previous macbook pro also did weird things until it was inoperable.
Now my current macbook pro, a mid-2010 15", is experiencing issues.
Everything was great, until I updated to mac os x lion. Snow leopard was running amazingly great. After lion, my mac
started crashing (first an application crashed and after 10 sec the whole system crashed) on a regular basis. Every time
it was essential to force shut-down my mac. Note that finder was crashing weirdly often, something that being myself a
mac user since 2004 seems very strange...
Another symptom was lag. My mac was lagish every now and then for a very short period of time. It was not that big a deal,
so I ignored it. 2-3 seconds of beach ball every day.... What seems odd, is that I got that beach ball most likely when surfing on
safari app. It seems odd, because I think beach ball means the system is waiting for the hard disk. Also, it was very common for
a beach ball in a java environment like facebook.
Last and least was after turning my mac on, the system froze on startup. After the next startup everything seemed great, but something
messed with bluetooth. I couldn't use both bluetooth mouse and keyboard. The problem caused was, super super lag for the bluetooth
mouse AND keyboard. I thought that was a perfect excuse to finally do a clean install on my mac.
Now, the problem I experience, which make me super-anxious, is the following. I start worrying that my issues are caused by hardware.
Running a super clean install of snow leopard, First thing I want to do, is software update. I choose software update aandd boom.
Crash report. I hope the reason it crashed is that I have not installed even iLife, but now that symptoms vary, thought that could worth
sharing.... What do you guys think the problem(s) is(are) ?
Thanks for helping
P.S. I didn't ever use more than 70% of HD capacity

Is this a new Apple? Macbook Pro issues - Data recovery.
I am a long time supporter of Apple (20 some odd years) but things seem different now and I am not talking about the "think different" from the old ad campaigns. Apple is a part of every aspect of my life with my personal machines and gadgets to the 50 some odd machines we use at work. One personal machine is a bad apple.
I have a Macbook Pro that has had issues since day one. I received it from Apple and there was a dent in the corner of the case. I immediately took it to the store and was told that they do not ship damaged equipment and that it would take 3 week to get a new machine. The machine worked and it seemed to be only a cosmetic issue. I was fine with it - I guess this was my mistake. The folks in the store documented the problem and sent me on my merry way. It was bought at the same time as my wife's machine - a regular black macbook (i tell you this because it is confused within the mix).
Since that time, I have called on 6 occasions about the MPB, from bluetooth errors, wouldnt wake from sleep, long start up times, firewire issues and now the hard drive has disappeared. All these occasions, I was calling to document the issues and make sure I had the correct fix and on the last call (before the HD failure) I was told that would extend my warranty due to my issues.
Now I am having the hard drive issue and have discussed this thing with 6 people and everyone is telling me a different story. Some say they can fix it... Some say they cannot... The store said that they would replace the whole machine yesterday but I needed to call the phone support folks and today the store geniuses want me to pay for a new hard drive and the install loosing all the info on the drive. This decision was changed in the store to replacing the drive and giving me the old drive to recover the data. In store today I was told that Apple does not ship damaged equipment... That is cool and out of all the machines that I have bought - I would have to agree - this one was and This MPB is an exception to the rule. Today I was also told that my calls were made on my wife's macbook and I could replace that machine which has never had an issue - I am typing on it right now. There was a clerical issue somewhere. To top all this off all my documenting of the pro's issues were said to be under this wife's machine and I was told that I have only called twice. Basically - I was called a liar.
This machine is an exception to the rule and I will say with my 20 years of interaction with Apple, This case is an exception as well. I hope that it is not the future of the "consumer driven" Apple. I guess I am just out a couple of grand for equipment and time and a whole slew of code if I cannot get my data back. And it this experience has slightly tarnished my view of a great company.
Anyone know some great data recovery folks in the Atlanta Area?Hi red dirt studio,
Out of curiosity, any particular reason you didn't secure a proper backup for your machine. Especially because it sounds like a rather important machine (work related perhaps?) and the data on it is also of equal importance. I know in Sacramento there are a few data recovery places that start @ $500 after a $100 diagnostic/consultation.
I realize, however, hindsight is 20/20. It always is... especially when it comes to data recovery.
Calling into AppleCare and reporting an issue does not extend your one-year limited warranty, nor does it extend your AppleCare coverage (if you purchased it for the unit). So whoever told you that over the phone needs to recheck their training material and refresh the Terms & Conditions of the agreement. No where on the pages contained within (http://images.apple.com/legal/applecare/docs/AppleCareProtect_Plan_NAen.pdf) does it make mention or stake claim to that "exception."
Now, having worked in AppleCare (California offices) for several years I can attest that the one exception that Apple will honor is: "Documented in Warranty/Repeat Repair." Even prior to working for Apple, I had a machine covered after the 3 year AppleCare expired because the unit had been serviced under the scope of coverage for an issue that was now occurring again. Apple made it right and fixed the machine, granting me another 90 day coverage extension as result of the repair. To my knowledge that "grace period" after the warranty/AppleCare expires is 90 days from last repair of expiration of coverage window. Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty confident on that number.
Regarding your issue, you need to reach out to AppleCare over the phone and attempt to get some clarification. A phone call always starts off with one of two things: (1) a SN# for the product, or (2) a case number. If you were supplying a SN# for your MacBook Pro and the phone agent accidentally logged it under another product then that's not something you should be punished for and now held financially responsible to resolve on your own. Again, though, that's something you need to take up with AppleCare.
You also indicated that the store wants to charge you for the HD replacement. So perhaps that answers my earlier question if the unit had AppleCare. I take it the unit does not? If it does, why are you paying to replace a defective HD?
Lastly... I'll agree that Apple doesn't "package, process and ship" damaged equipment from their facilities in China. But that doesn't mean it won't arrived unharmed. There's a lot that can happen between when the box is sealed and then opened by the consumer. -
2007 MacBook Pro issues after migration from 2011 iMac
I recently bought a used 2007 Macbook Pro. I was not very familiar with migration, and I realize now I should have done a bit of research before migrating from my iMac (mid 2010) running 10.8.5. I saw the message saying I should update software, but I couldn't figure out how without logging in, and getting on my network with the MacBook. Anyway, I did the migration. My first issue was the MacBook would not let me log in. I finally got it by resetting the password using a 10.6.4 install disc that came with my iMac. The issues I have now are lots of things either won't work, or I have to run them in 32 bit mode. I'm thinking it's because the newer versions residing on my iMac won't work on the older MacBook. I am unable to open iPhoto, and Desktop & Screensaver, Energy Saver in system prefs. I had to run Mail, iCal, and Contacts in 32 bit. I do not have a disc for Lion, but I just ordered it from the Apple Store. I'm wondering if I shoud just start fresh when I get the disc, or is there any fix for my ignorance? Is a new migration out of the question since the Lion is the most I can run on the MacBook while I'm running Mountain Lion on the iMac. I would really appreciate any advise!
Thanks,
JeffJeff,
what you’ve bought is the ability to download Lion from the Mac App Store, not a DVD. To be able to access the Mac App Store, you will need to have Mac OS X 10.6.6 or newer installed. The person who sold the MacBook Pro to you should not have included Lion with it, because any version of OS X downloaded from the Mac App Store is non-transferable; he should have included its original two grey installation DVDs, because those are transferable with the MacBook Pro.
Since you’ve now purchased Lion, you will be able to install your purchased version onto your MacBook Pro; however, to associate your MacBook Pro with your Apple ID (and thereby end the association of your MacBook Pro with its former owner), you will need to do a clean reïnstallaton of OS X onto it. To do a clean reïnstallation of OS X, you will need either the original model-specific pair of grey installation DVDs, or the white retail Snow Leopard DVD. It would be best to have both the grey DVDs and the Snow Leopard DVD, since the Snow Leopard DVD does not come with either the iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test for your MacBook Pro, and your model’s grey DVDs will not let you get to Mac OS X 10.6.6 to have access to the Mac App Store. -
Retina MacBook Pro Issues Since Updating To Yosemite
Hey everyone,
I have the early 2013 15 Inch Retina MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) and ever since I updated to Yosemite I have had many issues which are becoming serious problems.
Problem 1) 9/10 times the laptop will not turn off when shut down is pressed. The Finder disappears, the dock stays put and then does nothing. I have to manually hold the power button to get the laptop to turn off.
Problem 2) Audio issues. I have an external Audio Interface that I use for recording and playback through my studio monitors. Randomly when I'm watching videos the audio of the video will slow down so the audio sounds lowered in pitch while the video stays the same speed. While I'm listening to music through iTunes there have been occasions where the music has actually sped up at least 10x of it's original speed.
Problem 3) Connecting to Apple TV's crashes my computer. At college we have Apple TV's that we can connect Macs and iPads to to showcase work and when I connect my MacBook to it, the Macbook crashes and has to be forced rebooted.
Problem 4) The computer is just generally slower. When browsing files in the finder and using applications such as iMovie the computer is noticeably slower than when before upgraded.
I have tried contacting Apple support but was told that I had to purchase an incident report for £25. After spending £1800 on a Laptop I'm not paying £25 just to talk to someone. Has anyone had these issues? Any fixes?
Thanks!Well, if your Contacts have disappeared, then under System Preferences, click on iCloud and make sure you are signed into iCloud. If you are not, sign in. If you are, sign out and then back in to see if that restores your contacts.
I take it you have already restarted your Mac? If not, do that as well.

Retina 13" macbook pro issue with defective USB ports?
I have a late 2013 13" macbook pro with retina display. I'm having persistent issues with both USB ports. Connected peripherals like keyboards or external USB drives either will not be recognized at all, or will take a very long time (minutes) to be recognized by the system.
I'm running the latest version of Mavericks OS X 10.9 (13A2093) at the moment, which includes the keyboard/trackpad firmware fix that addressed initial issues with this series of laptops.
I took it to the local Genius Bar a few days ago and the Apple Genius was able to get an external USB drive to mount (eventually) on each port, but now it seems that waiting several minutes for the external device/drive to be recognized does no good.
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues? Here is an example of devices you should see in the Device Manager. Can you check what you have?

Un-updated iPhone4 and new macbook pro issues
Because of issues with my old PC I have been unable to update my iPhone 4 for about a year and a half now. My old PC crashed and now I am left with an unupdated iPhone 4 and a new Macbook Pro. I have already transfered my purchased music into my new Macbook, but I am worried that when I try to update my iPhone I will lose my 1,800 some unpurchased songs. I backed up my iPhone 4 in my iTunes, and it finished backing up extremely fast so I'm left in doubt that it backed up my unpurchased music.Does this mean my unpurchased music has also been backed up? I'm aware that my iphone will have to be restored though the updating process, and eventually restored from the back up. In other words, should my new itunes library have a back up of all of my unpurchased music, and if not what should I do?
My old computer is crashed so I unfortunately cannot refer back to it although all of those unpurachased songs were indeed on there. I don't have a problem with my purchased songs. I just want to make sure when I update my iphone I will not lose my unpurchased songs. Are my unpurchased songs backed up on my new macbook if i backed up my iphone in my new macbook's iTunes?

Logic 8, macbook pro, and uad 1 expander users
just wondering if anyone has experience using the uad 1 expander with logic 8 on their macbook pro. i had the original pci version a few years ago, but sold it when i went to my macbook pros for my main studio computers. i am pretty excited about getting my 1176ln back.
is everything working with your macbook pro, uad1 expander, and logic 8? any major hicups? Not yet, but I want one badly to replace my PCI one...
From the UAD forums, I don't think there have been any particular problems, although some people don't like the fact that you have to restart your computer to plug them in/turn them on, you can't do it on the fly...
