[Lollipop] Turning Auto-rotate off forces portrait mode

In various situations, I like to use my tablet in landscape mode, but turn auto-rotate off (watching movies/streams while lying down).
I do this using the pull-down quick menu. After the update to lollipop however, whenever I turn off "Auto-rotate", the button's name will switch to "Portrait" and my tablet (and app) will rotate into portrait mode, even if it was in landscape mode when I pressed the button. I reckon this is done with e-books in mind, but for my purposes this makes this feature useless.
Is there any way to restore the original behaviour (tablet stays in the orientation it was in when you decide to turn off Auto-rotate)? If there is not currently, I urge you to change it back to the old way (other lollipop tablets seem to have the old behaviour still from what I could gather from friends).

That's the way it's supposed to work
Well, that just sounds like an opinion. Do you have any source for that? As I said, my friends' other tablets behave differently.
Is there anyone from Sony around who can shed some light on this or make inquiries? Or is this a users-help-users-only support forum?
And @Johnny_dee, please don't hijack threads. The whole discussion now is about a whole other topic. Just open a new topic.

  • Can't turn auto rotate off!

    Hi, I got my Xperia Z1 today, and have now checked out everything on my new phone now, and I have just. discovered that I can't turn off the auto rotate feature
    Not sure if this happened after I updated to 4.3
    This is really annoying, I have tried to restart the phone, turn auto rotate off and on again in both the screen settings and the shortcut in the scroll down "menu"
    Anyone got any tips or tricks for me to a fix?
    Would appreciate it much

    Hi there,
    What if a some app you use causes that issue?
    Reboot your phone into "Safe Mode" and check whether an issue reappears.
    Cheers.

  • [FIX] Yoga 13 auto-rotates to portrait on startup after Win 8.1 upgrade

    This was going to be a question post but I just stumbled across the answer on my own, so here's the solution instead!
    After upgrading the Yoga 13 to Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store app, and even after installing all the new drivers, I found that every time I restarted when the lock screen came up it would suddenly rotate 90 degrees left to portrait mode. It would fix itself if I rotated the laptop or hit the hardware button to turn auto-rotate off and on again, but still kinda annoying.
    So here's the fix:
    -Seach for "local services" and open it up
    -Scroll down to "Sensor Monitoring Service"
     and double-click
    -Mine had its startup type set to manual, change this to automatic
    -Restart the computer
    Note:
    My Yoga was running a clean install of Windows 8 when I upgraded to 8.1, so I'm not sure if this applies to a Yoga with the factory install intact (or if it even gets this problem with the factory install, since I don't see any other posts about people having this problem).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    With a factory configuration the serivce is set to Manual, Trigger Start, and this config seems to work well...

  • Flex mobile orientation: force portrait mode and then allow auto orientation

    I'm creating a flex mobile project and I want to force the app to portrait orientation when I click a button, and when I click other button allow again to change the orientation.
    This is my code when I click the first button, where I want to force portrait mode:
    protected function click(event:MouseEvent):void{      if(stage.orientation != StageOrientation.DEFAULT){           stage.addEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged);           stage.setOrientation(StageOrientation.DEFAULT);      }else{           doSomething();      }  }
    private function orientationChanged(event:StageOrientationEvent):void{      doSomething();      stage.removeEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged); }
    private function doSomething():void{      stage.autoOrients = false; }
    It works ok and it changes the orientation if it's needed.
    Now, when I want to allow orientation change again, I've only putted:
    stage.autoOrients = true;
    It works ok if when I click the first button the app is in portrait and it doesn't have to change anything. But if it's on landscape and it have to change to portrait, when I allow orientation change again, it doesn't work ok.
    Do you know if I have to allow or change something? Or, is there any better way to do this?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for your answer. It works, but I have the same problem that I have setting the orientation. If I'm on landscape, it changes to Portrait ok, but when I want to allow auto orientation again, it doesn't work well.
    A little tricky I've found is:
    When I want to force to portrait:
    private var oldOrientation:String = null;
    protected function click(event:MouseEvent):void{
       if(stage.orientation != StageOrientation.DEFAULT){
                oldOrientation = stage.orientation;
                stage.addEventListener(StageOrientationEvent.ORIENTATION_CHANGE, orientationChanged);
                stage.setOrientation(StageOrientation.DEFAULT);
       }else{
                doSomething();
    private function orientationChanged(event:StageOrientationEvent):void{
                // do something if you are changing to portrait mode (the first change) and other thing if you are changing to old orientation
    And when I want to allow auto orientation again:
    if(oldOrientation != null){
            stage.setOrientation(oldOrientation);
            oldOrientation = null;

    How do I turn auto-correct off and still have a spell check?

    I do not believe this.. you can not disable auto correct without disabling the spell checker.. I am struck dumb by this.. I recently bought a mac for the first time.. ive always used windows.. there are more thngs like this than i expected.. I actually find this so ignorant I am lost for words.. this auto correct is a nightmare for me.. and has already caused me a lot of trouble because I have sent emails where words have been changed and i didnt notice and I have unknowingly insulted people.. i use a regular spell checker quite often but apparently I simply have no choice with safari.. oh well I am going to have to find another browser then.. goodbye safari!.. I also use a lot of shortened words and names etc etc.. like for eg I used the shortened word for problems "probs" and it changes it to "probe" and then i go back and change it back to WHAT I WANT TO SAY and it changes it AGAIN!!!!
    Does anyone else feel like this is yet another example of how, more and more, we are being treated like morons?
    Ok I'll try to stop ranting.. the real point is it should be possible to have a spell checker without auto correct..

  • Rotate display for portrait mode?

    I'd like to rotate the display orientation on my 15" MBP so that I can read documents in portrait mode while holding the laptop sideways. I found some tips instructing me to hold the option key down while selecting the displays pane in system preferences but that doesn't seem to work.
    I found SMSRotateD which is a little demo that rotates the display using the sudden motion sensor:
    http://www.osxbook.com/software/sms/smsrotated/
    It does successfully rotate the display 90 degrees, but it works erratically and won't stay in one orientation for long. I'd rather do this without the SMS. Can anyone tell me how?

    I do though hesitate to rotate the whole body of the machine. Functioning vertically may not be the best of things to do. At least back 10 years ago, and I don't know if it is true now, shifting the drive from the position it was formatted in relative to gravity to a different one for use without reformatting it can shorten the length of the hard drive. This was the case with the drives on some PowerMac 6500s which were formatted vertically and placed horizontally elsewhere.
    Whether or not you can do that with notebook drives regularly, remains to be seen. I'd say it would be better to get an external display that supports the rotation.

  • IOS7 forcing portrait mode

    Hi,
    I updated to iOS7 on my iPad so tht I could test the functionality of an application that is currently deployed on iOS6.  The application is published with the Landscape aspect ratio, Auto orientation unchecked and standard resolution.  When I launch the App on iOS7 it wil only display in portrait mode.  Does anyone have an explanation/solution for this?
    Best regards,
    Chris McLaughlin

    I had this same issue with two of our apps that were compiled a long time ago under AIR 3.6 and did NOT use Native Extensions (and thus were linked against an older version of the Apple iOS SDK).
    Two of our apps supported landscape only, but on iOS7 they displayed in portrait mode, so most of the UI wasn't visible and the apps became unusable under iOS7.
    After I rebuilt them under AIR 3.8 & 3.9, they correctly displayed in landscape mode, but with one small caveat that I encountered. The new version of the apps (under Air 3.8) would launch upside down on iOS7, but only when the home button of the device was on the left.
    I eventually fixed the issue by adding a Native Extension and then linking that native extension against the Apple iOS5 SDK. When nothing was specified for the Apple iOS SDK, the app would launch upside down. After linking to iOS5 SDK the problem went away.
    You can specify the Apple iOS SDK in :
    Project->Properties->ActionScript Build Packaging->iOS->NativeExtensions->Apple iOS SDK.

  • Time Machine cannot find Time Capsule after turning auto backups off

    2010 macbook 7,1 OSX 10.6.8.  Brand new rev.4 Time Capsule 2TB (MD032LL/A) just bought yesterday.
    Everything set up just fine and wireless is working.  Backups are working.
    Issue is that as soon as I turn the Time Machine slider to Off (I can turn it back to On at this point, doesn't matter once it's been in the Off position) in TIme Machine preferences, then try and Enter Time Machine or do a backup, it cannot find the Time Capsule (says cannot find backup volume or such).  I have to reselect the drive even though it's icon is showing right on the preferences screen.  A reboot will enable it to find the Time Capsule without my input.
    If I leave Time Machine turned on, the backups run fine and I can enter the Time Machine.  It is turning off Time Machine that triggers the issue.
    Tried the following:
      -Rebooted Time Capsule
      -Made sure Time Capsule name is less than 27 characters (it is 19)
      -Firewall is off
      -Filevaullt is off
      -Booted into Safe Mode
      -Repaired permissions
      -Trashed TIme Machine plist
      -Updated OSX
    At this point I called Applecare and they had me send them a capture of my TIme Machine data and will get back to me Monday.
    Oddly, my 10.5.8 iMac G5 2ghz is working fine with Time Machine and does not have this issue.  I can turn Time Machine off and on all I want and it can find the Time Capsule with no problem.
    Thanks for any help.

    Apple is still working on the issue but I have now noticed that I cannot VNC into my work PC anymore.  I get a "Could not connect to server, connection refused:5900"
    I am using Chicken of the VNC and it worked fine until I got the Time Capsule.  I know that 5900 is the port used for something and this sounds like it is related to the Time Capsule.
    I can't help but think this is also related to the "Cannot find backup disk" message from Time Machine.  This all sounds like the Time Capsule goofed up the works here.
    Also, I now have tons of reports in the console of it not being able to count items in a file at system/library/StartupItems.  That folder is NOT there. Which is why I assume the errors.  I have seen a few other reports and people are just restoring the file from Time Machine or making it via command line with admin.  When I go back far enough in Time Machine, the file IS there but has nothing in it.
    I asked Apple about that too and they checked a 10.6.8 computer and it had the file so not sure what is up there.  Not sure if it was 10.6.8 update or the bunch of iTunes, etc that I did after that.
    Have not restored that file yet, will wait to see what they say about the Time Capsule mess.
    Any ideas on restoring my VNC connection?

    I turned ato login off. Set a password. On login it failed. Perhaps I misstyped when setting up. I used the instaldisc to reset the password but after a few attempts It failed. Was it a mistake to select the hard drive after resetting the password.  I would like to try the alternative but now the C-key does not even let the install disc open, it goes directly to  the name and password screen. Keunepete,
    When I ordered my books for the ICND1 and ICND2, they came with a CD in the back pocket (sleeve) of the book. Along with the CD was a thick piece of paper that had the activation code on it. It was a white, square piece of paper with big black print on it. Did you buy your book used? Was the CD sealed in the back pocket?

  • Auto-rotate off? [Preview]

    is there a way to make this the default setting instead of always having to uncheck this?
    TIA!

    I believe that auto rotate only shows up when printing from preview. Different applications present different options, so I guess that's why the menu defaults to the way it is. Last setting used may not always give this option if the last print menu was different, but it's the best I can suggest.
    Either way, if you made a preset for preview, you would have to choose it. If the box comes back with auto rotate, you will have to uncheck. A click either way.
    Would be nice if could remember last settings used in all different menus.
    I just learned to live with it.
    And, You're Welcome
