Looking to create a detailed P/L in Crystal for B1

Question

We have an excellent P/L report created in XL Reporter. We are running SAP B1 v 8.82 but are considering a move to v 9.0. We know that XL Reporter is no longer integrated in B1 but just as an add on and I therefore wanted to see if I could use crystal to recreate the P/L Report.
I must also add that I am a relative novice with regard to crystal and sql but have produced simple reports and queries in both.
Our report takes the data from the General Ledger and I believe that the tables required are:-
JDT1 - Journal entry rows
OACT - G/L Accounts
OFPR - Posting period
Our report shows the following columns:
Period Total Last Year - Period Cumulative Total Last Year - G/L Item Name -  Period Total This Year - Period Cumulative Total This Year - Budget  Cumulative Total This Year
I want to be able to select the financial period and for the report to generate from that selection. From the original XL Report I know the G/L Accounts I need to include. I know all the values come from the JDT1 table and the values come from summing  (Debt) - (Credit). What I am struggling with is how to create different date ranges i.e. just the period and the year to date for the current year, the corresponding date ranges from the previous year and to have those dates relate to a chosen period.
Any assistance or if you can suggest any points of reference to assist would be a great help.
