Lookup and a return table

1.0 what's a lookup and a return table,  are they same thing?
2.0 how do you create it?
thanks

Hi,
a lookup table to enhance your data while loading. For instance you load sales in a cube and your source is providing the site and you require to post the Sale Organization.
In a start routine (Ttransfer or Update rules) you fill via ABAP a lookup table having the relation site to Sales Org.
In the sales org routine you read this lookup table with the key site and post the corresponding sales org in your IObj.
The return table functionality in update rules:
Imagine you are loading sales in a KF in a cube. Your requirement is have a year to date key figure stored as well in your cube.
So you load sales for January, posted to period JAN.
You would need to post this record for next 11 months as well in order to able to see YTD sales correctly when you select period FEB.
The return table enables you to post many records from 1 loaded records.
The lookup tables are created as internal table via ABAP in start routines
The return table is located in an update routine for a particular key figure and you use ABAP as well
Hoping this will answer your enquiries

  • Stored procedure and function - return table type

    Hello again :)
    I have one simple question :) Maybe on this forum the question was asked, but I found only similar question and they didn't help me.
    It's possible return in Stored Function (with StoredProcedureFunction) as result return TABLE type? Or return table type with output parametr with Stored Procedure? Or instead of the table return the db object, but it is similar problem:)
    Now, I can using db types TABLES or DB OBJECTS as INPUT parameters with call stored functions or procedures, for example:
    I have this simple db object:
    create or replace type BUFFER_DATA_R as object( detail  VARCHAR2(4000 ))
    And this simple table:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE BUFFER_DATA_T IS TABLE OF BUFFER_DATA_R
    I create simple domain class object:
    *public class DMBufferDataStruct {*
    public String bufferData;
    And I mapped in java with ObjectRelationalDataTypeDescriptor:
    ObjectRelationalDataTypeDescriptor descriptor = new ObjectRelationalDataTypeDescriptor();
    descriptor.setJavaClass(DMBufferDataStruct.class);
    descriptor.setTableName("BUFFER_DATA_T");
    descriptor.setStructureName("BUFFER_DATA_R");
    descriptor.setPrimaryKeyFieldName("DETAIL");
    descriptor.addFieldOrdering("DETAIL");
    descriptor.addDirectMapping("bufferData", "DETAIL");
    and join to server session ...
    Well, i using this doimain class object as input parametr wih stored procedure call:
    ObjectRelationalDatabaseField ordf = new ObjectRelationalDatabaseField("");
    ordf.setSqlType(Types.STRUCT);
    spCall.addNamedArgument(key, key,
    Types.ARRAY,
    "BUFFER_DATA_T",
    ordf);
    query.addArgument(key);
    args.add(paramsInputs.get(key));
    in paramsInputs is Vector of DMBufferDataStruct...
    Well, this work fine!
    But I can not figure, how to return this table from output parameters of stored procedure or as a return value from stored function?
    Example of exceptions:
    The number of arguments provided to the query for execution does not match the number of arguments in the query definition. - return as output parameter
    PLS-00382: expression is of wrong type - used as result from stored function
    So, my question is: Is possible return this table type from stored procedure or function? And if YES, how can I set output argument for call?
    Thx advance!
    Sorry for my English! :)
    Best regards, KLD

    Your question is: what is faster PL/SQL or PL/SQL? And the answer is: it is PL/SQL of course!
    As a general rule, you use a function when you return exactly one result: a number or a string or (more complex) instance of an object type or REF CURSOR or PL/SQL collection.
    You use a procedure when:
    a) you just do the job and return no result
    b) you return multiple results - you can use multiple IN/OUT or OUT parameters
    Imagine you have to write a program unit that performs a partitioned table maintenance by adding a partition.
    You can implement this unit:
    a) if you want return a "status code" (0 on successful completion or non-zero in case of error) then you should use a function
    b) if you want no "status code" (in case of error an exception is raised that is handled outside of the program unit) then you should use a procedure
    c) if you want "status code", name of tablespace where a partition was created (assume you program is so complex that it can choose different tablespaces based on metadata and free space available) and free space in that tablespace after the creation of a new partition then you should use a procedure with 3 OUT parameters.
    But these are good programming practices that can be applied to (almost) any 3rd generation programming language, not only PL/SQL.

  • JCo issue - return table is null

    Hi,
    I am trying to read the return table from a function module using
    JCoParameterList jplExport = function.getTableParameterList();
    This works fine in the development environment, however in QA I am getting jplExport as null.
    I have debugged it in QA using an external debugger and the return table has rows.
    We have also ruled out the possibility of it being a authorization issue after checking with the security team.
    I have debugged the FM using the JCo user and it has the return table, also if I run it from within SAP GUI it returns values in the return table.
    To re-iterate the same code works fine in Dev.
    In QA the import is good as I can see the values in the return table.
    I am unable to understand what the issue is here. Why will it return null inspite of having values ?
    Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Veena.

    Hi Veena,
    -> Check if you can call any other function modules in the QA environment. If not, something is wrong with JCo configuration.
    ->Do you see any differences in function modules signatures from Dev and QA?

    Return Tables: Allow the ability to create multiple records from one record BW is designed to aggregate data
    Without the concept of return tables, this would be very difficult, as BW does not easily split records or create several records from one record .Works with ODS and InfoCube Return tables can exist on more than one key figure For example: Adding actual data and forecasted data in one InfoCube from two sources Issue: There are multiple plan weeks for each actual calendar week
    The result cube should contain actual and plan data or comparison The plan data previously exists – when the actual occurs, it should be written to each planned record – this would require multiple records
    A startroutine on the InfoCube update rules is needed to get the all planned data and store it into an internal table Storing the associated planned data in an internal table allows this to be used later in the update rule return table to merge the planned data with the actual
    data This data could be read from an associated InfoCube or ODS  Return table checkbox should be chosen in the key figure tab of the update rules Code should be written to loop through the existing forecast data and
    append records to RESULT_TABLE  Each records written to RESULT_TABLE appends another record to the InfoCube

  • RFC Lookup - Best Approach To Parse Returned Tables

    Hi Everyone,
    We are doing some RFC Lookups at a header node that are returning tables for all of the items (for performance reasons).  I am trying to figure out what the best way to extract the values from the table, which is most of time has more than 1 key column.  At the moment I am doing this through DOM, but I have also heard about using arrays, and have even seen an example of using a hashtables with all of the values concatenated together to later parse out using substrings.  I'm looking for the best approach to:
    1) Store this data as some kind of global object to lookup during the header
    2) Search and Parse from the global object during linte items.
    As an example, I have the following lines in my table:
    Key1,Key2,Value1,Value2,Value3
    A,A,1,2,3
    A,B,1,2,4
    A,C,3,4,2
    B,A,2,4,6
    And during line item processing I may want to find the value for Key1=A, Key2=C.
    Thanks

    I found my solution by myself. Below is the solution , hope this will help others:-
    Retrieve data from MDM  using MDM ABAP API.

    Step-2. Create another structure in SAP having all  lookup fields of MDM , fieldname in ECC must be same as that of MDM field
    code.
    Step-3.Create structure in SAP for  individual lookup field(Single Field only)   with the same name as MDM Field code.

  • Currency unit in return tables

    Hi @ all,
    I'm working with a return table in the update rules to calculate a key figure. Is it possible, that the currency unit of the key figure is not filled automatically? The currency units in source system and target system are the same.
    Thank you for your help!
    Clemens

    Hallo Clemens,
    yes, you're right; are you sure as well to not have more COMP_CODES then 0009 and 0010?
    perhaps it would be wiser to lookup the comp_code-currency from the master data of 0COMP_CODE (0CURRENCY is one of its attributes) in order to avoid having it empty and always hardcode it... This is of course if you want to derive the company code currency...
    hope this helps....
    let us know if you question is answered by closing the thread!

  • LookUp to the same table with multiple conditions

    Hi,
    I nead to do a lookup to the same table in the flow but with diffrent quieres, each query contains it's own 'where'.
    Can I do it somehow in one look up or do I have to use a few ?
    select a from table where a=1
    select b from table where c=3
    Thanks

    Hi,
      Using multiple lookups will be a cleaner approach. If you are using multiple lookups on the same table consider using Cache transform. Refer the below link for details on Cache transform
    Lookup and Cache Transforms in SQL Server Integration Services
    Alternatively if you want to go ahead with single look up , you may have to modify the SQL statement in the Lookup accordingly to return the proper value. In you case it may be
    select a,b from table where a=1 or c=3
    Note : Consider the above as a pseudo code. This needs to be tested and applied based on your requirement.
    Best Regards Sorna

  • 4 lookups against single large table

    I need to do a 4 column lookup against a large table (1 Million rows) that contains 4 different record types.  The first lookup will match on colums A, B, C, and D.  If no match is found, I try again with colums A, B, C, and '99' in column D.  If no match, try again with column A, B, D, and '99' in Column C.  Finally, if no match in any of the above, use column A, '99' in B, '99' in C, '99' in D.  I will retreive 2 columns from the lookup table.
    My thought is that breaking this sequence out into 4 different tables/ lookups would be most efficient. The other option would be to write a script that handled this logic in a single transform with an in-memory table.  My concern is that the size of the table would be too large to load into memory.
    Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi all, ..Jamie glad your looking at this post. I've a spreadsheet contains about 26K rows and a warehouse fact table containing 10 million rows (after being filtered). I want to pull back only the fact table rows that match the id field in the spreadsheet,
    and thus extend the 26K rows in the spreadsheet with the fields from the fact table. Pretty basic join ID = ID. To make it interesting/challenging I'm using Excel 2010 32 Bit no issue with 26K rows but no way I can even browse 10 mil records without timeout.
    Seems like PQ can use SQL functions so was wondering if that might be an option to do the work on the server I.e. fn_ReturnRow(@ID). Haven't seen an example of this being used anywhere so perhaps you, Chris Webb or one of the other PQ Gurus could lend a hand?
    This may also help the original poster with some more functions to return back rows that would normally make PQ choke. Hopefully with minimal M. And BTW is there a way to use SQL Stored Procs in PQ? Cheers

    I did all the settings for Purchasing. Some reason i couldn't able to generate any Entry with Process Key '6' or '7'.

  • SQL Server 2012 Management Studio:In the Database, how to print out or export the old 3 dbo Tables that were created manually and they have a relationship for 1 Parent table and 2 Child tables?How to handle this relationship in creating a new XML Schema?

    Hi all,
    Long time ago, I manually created a Database (APGriMMRP) and 3 Tables (dbo.Table_1_XYcoordinates, dbo.Table_2_Soil, and dbo.Table_3_Water) in my SQL Server 2012 Management Studio (SSMS2012). The dbo.Table_1_XYcoordinates has the following columns: file_id,
    Pt_ID, X, Y, Z, sample_id, Boring. The dbo.Table_2_Soil has the following columns: Boring, sample_date, sample_id, Unit, Arsenic, Chromium, Lead. The dbo.Table_3_Water has the following columns: Boring, sample_date, sample_id, Unit, Benzene, Ethylbenzene,
    Pyrene. The dbo.Table_1_XYcoordinates is a Parent Table. The dbo.Table_2_Soil and the dbo.Table_3_Water are 2 Child Tables. The sample_id is key link for the relationship between the Parent Table and the Child Tables.
    Problem #1) How can I print out or export these 3 dbo Tables?
    Problem #2) If I right-click on the dbo Table, I see "Start PowerShell" and click on it. I get the following error messages: Warning: Failed to load the 'SQLAS' extension: An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service.
    --> Failed to retrieve data for this request. --> Invalid class.  Warning: Could not obtain SQL Server Service information. An attemp to connect to WMI on 'NAB-WK-02657306' failed with the following error: An exception occurred in SMO while trying

    I get this problem fixed in my PC that is an end user of the Windows 7 LAN System? Note: I don't have the regular version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 in my PC. I just have the Microsoft 2012 Shell (Integrated) program in my PC.
    Problem #3: I plan to create an XML Schema Collection in the "APGriMMRP" database for the Parent Table and the Child Tables. How can I handle the relationship between the Parent Table and the Child Table in the XML Schema Collection?
    Problem #4: I plan to extract some results/data from the Parent Table and the Child Table by using XQuery. What kind of JOIN (Left or Right JOIN) should I use in the XQuerying?
    Please kindly help, answer my questions, and advise me how to resolve these 4 problems.
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott Chang

    In the future, I would recommend you to post your questions one by one, and to the appropriate forum. Of your questions it is really only #3 that fits into this forum. (And that is the one I will not answer, because I have worked very little with XSD.)
    1) Not sure what you mean with "print" or "export", but when you right-click a database, you can select Tasks from the context menu and in this submenu you find "Export data".
    2) I don't know why you get that error, but any particular reason you want to run PowerShell?
    4) If you have tables, you query them with SQL, not XQuery. XQuery is when you query XML documents, but left and right joins are SQL things. There are no joins in XQuery.
    As for left/right join, notice that these two are equivalent:
    SELECT ...
    FROM   a LEFT JOIN b ON a.col = b.col
    SELECT ...
    FROM   b RIGHT JOIN a ON a.col = b.col
    But please never use RIGHT JOIN - it gives me a headache!
    There is nothing that says that you should use any of the other. In fact, if you are returning rows from parent and child, I would expect an inner join, unless you want to cater for parents without children.
    Here is an example where you can study the different join types and how they behave:
    CREATE TABLE apple (a int         NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
                        b varchar(23) NOT NULL)
    INSERT apple(a, b)
       VALUES(1, 'Granny Smith'),
             (2, 'Gloster'),
             (4, 'Ingrid-Marie'),
             (5, 'Milenga')
    CREATE TABLE orange(c int        NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
                        d varchar(23) NOT NULL)
    INSERT orange(c, d)
       VALUES(1, 'Agent'),
             (3, 'Netherlands'),
             (4, 'Revolution')
    SELECT a, b, c, d
    FROM   apple
    CROSS  JOIN orange
    SELECT a, b, c, d
    FROM   apple
    INNER  JOIN orange ON apple.a = orange.c
    SELECT a, b, c, d
    FROM   apple
    LEFT   OUTER JOIN orange ON apple.a = orange.c
    SELECT a, b, c, d
    FROM   apple
    RIGHT  OUTER JOIN orange ON apple.a = orange.c
    SELECT a, b, c, d
    FROM   apple
    FULL OUTER JOIN orange ON apple.a = orange.c
    go
    DROP TABLE apple, orange

    If you would like to create a package/procedure in order to solve this problem consider using the UTL_FILE in built package, here are a few steps to get you going:
    1. Get your DBA to create directory object in oracle using the following command:
    create directory TEST_DIR as ‘directory_path’;
    Note: This directory is on the server.
    2. Grant read,write on directory directory_object_name to username;
    You can find out the directory_object_name value from dba_directories view if you are using the system user account.
    3. Logon as the user as mentioned above.
    Sample code read plain text file code, you can modify this code to suit your need (i.e. read a csv file)
    function getData(p_filename in varchar2,
    p_filepath in varchar2
    ) RETURN VARCHAR2 is
    input_file utl_file.file_type;
    --declare a buffer to read text data
    input_buffer varchar2(4000);
    begin
    --using the UTL_FILE in built package
    input_file := utl_file.fopen(p_filepath, p_filename, 'R');
    utl_file.get_line(input_file, input_buffer);
    --debug
    --dbms_output.put_line(input_buffer);
    utl_file.fclose(input_file);
    --return data
    return input_buffer;
    end;
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem with Return table

    Hi all,
    Greetings!
    I am facing a probelm with return table, i.e it is adding body record and workarea record also to the data target. so, it is adding the actual record to data target including the workarea record to with the key figure and year values as zeros and spaces. I worked with Return table one or two times, but this time amazing it is adding extra record.
    Please guide me..
    Thanks and Regards
    Chand

    Hi Chand,
    Adding extra rows is kind of strange. It must be either, the records in the data request being duplicated or the logic in the RETUN table must be messed up. If possible just have a snapshot of pseud code may be it could help analyzing the error.
