Loose quality with FCP export with no editing / DVCPRO HD

Hi.
I have a big problem with my FCP
ANY kind of video exported from FCP using same settings in timeline & export as in source,
is worst then source. Even with no editing.
Example.
I simply take source video to timeline then export it with EXPORT / QUICK TIME MOVIE
and the exported file has visible bigger pixels.
( with 'export using QT conversion' / same settings / the same effect )
please help.

If you are watching it in Quicktime, make sure you have the high quality setting checked. Apple J, video track, etc..

  • No Video with FCP HDV with QTP

    I have a strange question....
I have an Intel G5 iMac (10.4.11) and I capture and edit with FCP 5.0.4 using a Sony Z1 using the HDV 1080i50 sequence (I live in Hong Kong) I edit the video and export Quicktime movie using my sequence preset HDV 1080i50.
I cannot play the exported video with QTP!!
I hear sound but there is no picture. I only have a white screen!!
I can open this video with FCP and it plays fine!!
I can then take this exported video and transfer it to my G5 dual core tower (10.4.11) and the video plays fine in QTP!
I would really like to be able to use QTP to play these videos! Both the iMac and G5 tower have the exact OSX and FCP. The only difference is one is Intel and the other is PPC! Has anyone had problems playing HDV videos on intel macs?
    Any ideas or suggestion?

I've re-installed FCP Studio and the problem still persists....
    any ideas?

  • Why does a H264 mov looks better with FCP then with compressor

    Hi all,
I was wondering why I get better results with making .mov in FCP/ QT Conversion then with Compressor 3.
I've made a movie in FCP -(XDCam EX1080p 25 (35mb/s VBR). It must be exported to a H264 mov. 480x270. When I export it using FCP/QT Conversion it looks good.
After exporting a movie with the same settings in FCP ((XDCam EX1080p 25 (35mb/s VBR), I use it in Compressor. But after rendering it looks aliasing, even with the same settings as in FCP.
I want to work with compressor, so I can still work with FCP when I'm rendering a movie.
    Any ideas?

    does anybody know why?
In simple terms, in order to edit your footage, iMovie needs a certain amount of data about each frame.
In the compressed form stored on the all the necessary data isn't present, so the missing pieces have to be filled back in to allow you to edit. This process increases the file size.
Once you've edited your movie it can then be re-compressed.

  • Help with FCP and long project editing - Thanks!

I have posted several questions in this discussion group and in the iMovie group to no avail. I get a lot of answers, but not from anyone who has actually done any of the editing I am seeking. So if anyone has actually done the editing I am describing below -- I appreciate your help. Yes, I have searched the archives -- but again, I see a lot of confusing feedback. I have been working on this for three days now and it's driving me crazy! I have discovered that iMoive is $#@% -- and does not work with a long project, (40 minutes) so I am thinking about switching to FCP-HD. Thanks.
    Here goes:
1: I need to transfer original master footage, 1080i HDV from a Sony HDR-FX1 to an editing program, edit the tapes (over 5 hours total) into a 50 minute "program". I then need to "share" or export the footage back to a new tape, using the Sony HDR-FX1 as the receiving camera. Simple enough.
2: I need to make sure the outgoing footage is of equal quality as the original footage taken from the camera. I am guessing here, that the footage can be edited in FCP-5 as "native" -- then transferred back to the Sony?
3: I am assuming that the native footage is just that -- and will not require the long process of converting to another format, e.g., ASI that takes hours to
    render. (as in iMovie).
4: I am assuming I can edit and view HDV as native footage in FCP in real time, like iMovie, via firewire from the camera?
    I really appreciate any assistance.

Welcome to the family, you'll be joining us soon.
The FCP product page says: > It features powerful new multicamera editing, native HDV support, ... edit everything from DV and SD to DVCPRO HD and fully uncompressed 10-bit high-definition video. Or work with new formats like native HDV (long-GOP MPEG2) and 50Mbps IMX... HD editing requires a 1GHz or faster PowerPC G4 or G5 and 1GB of RAM (2GB recommended).<
You seem to have the hardware including the Flux-o-pator, but, really, you want to talk to an Apple reseller who handles FCP and understands HDV via Sony. I don't like the way you're using "I am assuming..." You can't assume anything. Give them a chance to sell you FCP or Studio and go demo your camera on their system. You will have concrete evidence of the minimum machine specs and how well you can get your files in and out of the application.
Call you local Mac user group and try to locate other FCP users.
Try also the creativecow.net forums for Sony HD products.
Google your camera model for support groups.

  • Fustration with FCP and trying to edit in HD

    Someone Please Help!
Over the last several days I have been trying to start to be able to edit in HD so that I can ultimately be able to produce a Blu-Ray option for my customers by June 2010 (i'm trying to get an early jump on a what I suspect is a steep learning curve). Up until early this morning (4am) I couldn't even get Compressor 3.05 to run but that is now finally going after an uninstall and re-install.
My problem is this, I normally do a three camera shoot of long events(commencements) in which in the past I have been able to edit in DVCAM synchronize the footage from the three different cameras, edit, put transitions in and output to DVD. Over the course of this year, I invested in three HD cameras a Sony Z5U(HDV), a Sony EX3 (XDCAM) and a JVC HM100U (also XDCAM). If the well was infinite then it would have been three EX3's but that's not reality and the three cameras have features which are complmentary to the others.
I have experimented using three small clips done in 1080 30P, and as was recommended converted them all to Apple Pro Res so as to be on equal footings by sending the clips through compressor and then onto the FCP 6.06 timeline. I then rendered what ever was required once on the timeline Project is also in Pro Res.
At this point, I am unable to put any transitions in(the time line will not accept them)between clips shot with the different cameras. Clip info shows the EX3 footage @1920X1080 Pro Res w/ 17.1 mb/sec data rate and the Z5U shows up as 1440X1080 Pro Res with 15.1mb/sec data rate. Both audios are 16 bit stereo.
To boot, the render times are v-e-r-y long I can't even image what it will be for a two hour project. An upgraded quad or 8 processor will help to partially rectify this, it but that's another 3-5K expenditure. Is there a simplier workflow to do what I need? What am I missing?
The HD looks great but its almost not worth the bother for this amount of energy, time and money expenditure. Not to mention the non-support of Blu-ray burning in DVD Studio. It's also counterproductive to suggest shooting in HD and then have to knock it down to SD to edit. Sooner or later this course of action will have to be abandoned as customers want Blu-rays and not DVD's.
    Can anyone help?

All elegant suggestions. I appreciate your frustration, we see this often around here.
If you want to produce longform HD productions that your clients will buy from you, you must work out the details by starting at the output stage and working backwards.
if you want BD as the deliverable, you must first determine how to burn those BD disks, in-house or a service company? Buy a single BD burner drive or a full-on BD duplicator? PC- or Mac-based, Adobe or Toast software? Then you have to figure out how you will be supplying the movies for the BD burning runs.
Your old G5 Mac may or may not be up to the task of converting and editing full HD but you should have made absolutely certain of that before you committed to your camera purchases.
I stopped following pro and consumer camera developments the day we got our HVX170s but I believe each camera in your collection shoots a different version of "HD." You must convert all of your footage to the exact same codec and then use that same codec in your sequence to avoid extensive rendering. You stated that your clips indicate different aspect ratios or pixel dimensions and this indicates you did not make the conversion properly. Easily fixed but it's gonna take some time and a bit of research.
Blu-ray remains a weird enigma, I can't help you there. Apple will do what it wants when it wants and many of us will then be forced to make our BD decisions. Till then, there are many BD solutions on the market including Adobe and Toast. They seem to have their own complications so, since I have no immediate need for BD, I'll just wait to see what Apple offers.

  • Premiere-CC Poor Quality Logos on export with Hardware Acceleration.

This is an old and new issue.
Have an XDCam-HD preset Sequence.  XDcam footage is green screen, layer below is a white background.  Layer above keyed footage is an imported PSD with 2 logos on same layer with transparancy.
Sequence settings:  MRQ and MRB are checked, and composite in linear color is unchecked.
Playback resolution and Paused resolution both set to full.
Using Cuda acceleration in project settings, and all hardware accelerated FX, program plays back perfectly and looks excellent.
Problem:  While Cuda acceleration is enabled, when the playhead is paused, or stopped, logos look terrible.  The alpha looks like it has noise in it.  However, when you hit play, everything looks good.
Supers created in the Titler are not affected and look fine.
If you render the seqence for preview, logos render with terrible result, as if paused.  Also, on export you get the same bad looking logos.
If you disable hardware acceleration, all is well.
    Any thoughts?

If you care to upload the PSD, I can check it on my end.

  • Loosing quality when import-export file

I am just wondering, if I loose some quality when I - lets say- an Apple Pro Res 422 HQ 1080p video clip, I import to FCP, do some modifications, export to Pro Res 422 HQ again, import it to Photoshop, do some more modifications> export to the same, but find, I need to work in FCP again, import it, do some modification and export it again to Pro Res 422 HQ. Would there be a visible quality loss?
    Dorian

    Try this.
Make a copy of a clip.
Take the copy and edit/color/alter the images using all the operations you would normally.
Then, look at the original clip vs the altered clip on external monitoring devices (including scopes) to decide if you have an issue.
    Good luck.

  • Noticeably worse quality for FCP exported DV video in QT Windows

    Hey all,
I believe this question has been brought up in a previous post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2932763&#2932763 "Quicktime export from FCP quality bad on PCs"), but it was never answered. So I captured video using final cut pro using the following capture preset:
Sequence Preset - DV NTSC 48 kHz
    DVR-TRV900 using NTSC
    29.97 fps
DV - NTSC at Best Quality
    24 bits per pixel
    720 by 480
When I view the video under quicktime for mac, it looks good. However, when I view the content under quicktime for windows, the quality is noticeably degraded. For instance, when I looked at the video clip in mac, there was a text overlay that displayed the time and date. When I look at it in Windows quicktime, the quality has degraded to an extent that the numbers are no longer readable. Besides the overall quality difference in playback between mac and pc quicktime, there are no other noticeable artifacts. Also, I tried viewing the video in VLC (video lan client) on windows, and it looks perfectly fine.
    Ray

    Hi Guys,
    thanx for your replies.
    here's the latest:
Brian, I followed your instructions and the DVD burned successfully. However the video quality of the dvd when viewed on my TV ('ve tried on all 3 of my tvs now) is still a lot poorer than the quicktime movie that was imported into DVDSP4. When I play the original QT Movie on my Mac CRT monitor it looks a little blurry and grainy because I guess its non interlaced however when viewed on an external Video monitor it looks great - very sharp.
When I view the burned DVD on my television the picture quality looks like the non interlaced version of the original QT Movie that appeared on my Mac CRT and not the sharp interlaced (lower field) version that appeared on my external video monitor.
Its almost like taking a sharp jpeg into Photoshop and applying a gaussian blur of about 0.3 followed by jepg compression compressing it down to 5% quality!
I'm totally mystified. Can the conversion to Mpeg2 be removing all interlacing so that you get the less sharp computer monitor look? I just want the video on my final DVDs to be as good as the original source footage! I appreciate that along the way there might be loss of some quality but surely not that much?
Does this make sense to you guys or am I still doing something very wrong?
Robert: I have tried setting all manner of drives including a fresh external firewire HD with nothing on it (clean out of the box) but it doesn't seem to help.
Brian: I tried the no network suggestion a few months back but I'm not sure if I got it right. At the moment I have broadband through an external speedtouch usb modem and am also connected (occasionally although not for the last 3 months) via a crossover cable to my PCs ethernet card. When I last tried the No Network solution I had immense trouble getting my internet to work again! Can you please help me by directing me to the best ay to do this while protecting my internet settings?
any more help guys would be greatfully appreciated.

  • QuickTime 7.2 Has Decreased Quality Of FCP Exports

Totally clean install, I have been doing nothing but FCP editing on it. Export to QuickTime multiple times a day for testing.
Delayed QuickTime 7.2 install in case of problems, then decided to proceed yesterday - ever since that moment exporting my FCP to QuickTime produces shocking quality. Interlaced edges, chopping video, poor edging, etc.
Direct comparisons between footage exported immediately prior to 7.2 and after are night and day - it's terrible.
Have tried doing a full QT7.2 install, even did a 10.4.10 combo reinstall, but no change... every export I do to QuickTime from FCP is producing the above problems. Nothing else has changed, haven't even done editing on the project I have been re-exporting to then start seeing the alleged improved H264 in action... haven't even got that far
    WT???

Many thanks to Pacifist, not Apple, for resolving this. It enabled me to forcefully install QuickTime 716 - I then reinstalled the Combo 10.4.10 update and restarted.
An absolute solid week of time lost because of this buggy QuickTime release, but I'm finally fixed and running again.
Should any further QuickTime updates come through I'll be sure to decline them.

  • How to use third party plugin with FCP, I'm lost...

    Hello,
I need informations about how to use plugins with FCP.
I do edit mostly classical concerts. I'd like to do basic audio post prod, without swaping between Soundtrack and FCP.
I need two simple things : add reverb (the built in reverb is really bad), and enhancer. So I looked for specialised third party audio plugins, but I couldn't manage to find something that work for me...
    - Do FCP support VST plugins ? How to install them ?
    - I tried a few audio units plugins. It works, but I couldn't get a friendly visual interface, like VST effects racks. Is it possible in FCP ?
    - does anybody know a good reverb plugin with a friendly interface compatible with FCP ?
    Please help, I'm lost !
    Emmanuel

I need two simple things : add reverb (the built in reverb is really bad), and enhancer.< </div>
What you NEED is a better recordist at the concert, someone who understands the peculiarities of your specific video deliver plans.
Soundtrack Pro is right up there with Motion in its impossible-to-understand interface paradigm shift away from industry standard tools. However, if you are in the position of being a sound editor, you must find a tool that works for you. STP might not be the one, certainly isn't for me. You could always try Logic. Yeah, good luck with THAT.

  • Trouble exporting with compressor

Been working on a project with multiple exports with compressor -- working just fine. Without changing any settings, FCP 5.1.4 now says "this file contains no media" when I try to export new sequence. Running with two internal hard drives, one dedicated to video files only. Will export with quicktime okay and playback is fine. Thoughts, ideas?

    Hi:
It's an old "bug?" in FCP and is related with folders opened/focused in FCP browser.
    Check this old thread:

Still nor resolved issue, FCP opens, appears in
the tool bar, but no canvas, library etc etc, very weird.
Have uninstalled, re-installed, same problem. And have a stack of work to do.

  • How to export a short  film made with still images without loosing quality?

    Hi,
I have been trying everything to make a short film, which is made with still images, to look decent once exported however it is a real challenge. Here are the steps I have undertaken:
1- I prepare the photographs and give them the aspect ration of 720p and whatever height as I try not to crop them too much at 300dpi. They look great in photoshop or capture one. I then save them as.tiff. All the images are RGB.
2- I start a new project in premiere pro cs4 and make it DV Pal 25fps.
3-I import the images and place them on the timeline. If they are a bit too big I rescale them. The images seem to look ok on the timeline although I seem to have lost the deepness of the colours.
    4-I render the work area
5-I export it as quicktime, dv pal, quality 100.
My dilemna is that although exporting with quicktime, dv pal, quality 100 seems to give me the best quality compared to using quicktime animation, mpeg2, cinemak, avi..., the images are still not as sharp as in Photoshop and the colours look a lot paler and washed out. Also, when looking close to the screens you can see tiny squares on the images although from distance it's not too bad. When I view it from the exported file using Nero it's not too bad although definitely not perfect, as soon as I try to make a DVD and import it in Adobe Encore CS4 or send it by Dynamic Link, the quality looks horrible with images that look soft if not blurred and completely washed out.
I have now tried about t bu15 versions to see what 's the best I still have not reached the optimum quality and since these will be shown on big tvs or projected onto screens I need to nail it.
Would anybody have any advice please please please?
    Many Thanks

My overall advice is to do that kind of work in an application that is designed for that.  Give Photodex Proshow Producer trial a crack at it.  I do a lot of work with stills, and that IMO PSP is the best approach.  If you are intermixing the odd still, Pr may get you by.  If you plan on doing a lot of that, try proshow, where the workflow and extensive features are designed for making high quality videos from stills that can be output to a wide number of formats and destinations, including color management with many of them( including avi).  And, no need to resize.  I know this won't solve your present problem.
Obviously, your attempt in Pr has not worked out as you had hoped. Maybe a bit more info would help. How are you rescaling them in Pr? That might well account for some quality loss. What is the original format and size of the images? What color management are you using in PS? Are you using any color correction or effects in Pr? Is your project interlaced or progressive?
From your description,  you are not even getting the quality you should be getting from Pr IMO, though as Jim says, it is video and it will never look as pristine as it does in PS, but it still seems to me that something you are doing has degraded the work more than normally would be expected.

  • FCP export for ATV with chapters

Hi, I have about an hour of PAL DV edited content in FCP 6, with about 10 chapter points. I've created my DVD and now I want to keep a copy for Apple TV with chapter points included. Can anyone advise which way to do this, as I've tried some options using QT export/convert and Compressor etc. but all unsatisfactory. When I get a good quality ATV export it doesn't have the chapters included. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
    Chris

Yes, I can see them ok and have managed to export in various formats with them intact. My problem is more to do with knowing the right settings/codec to export for Apple TV but with the chapters in there still. I've got good looking ATV compliant exports, and I've got various formats with the chapters in, but not both. It would seem like a really basic thing to want to do, but seems really elusive (unless I'm being dumb!). I actually started out in iMovie as it's a family video and pretty basic edits etc. but iMovie can't do this either
    Thanks, chris
