Losing connection to My Book 1 TB hard drive connected to airport.  Keep having to restart airport.  Huge inconvenience as all users get bumped off every time...need help!

I originally thought the problem was due to both windows and apple machines accessing the hard drive.  Well now I have only apple devices.  Everything is current in terms of software.  Still having the issue with My Book (Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive) being accessable and then disappearing when I step away from computer.  Restarting the hard drive does not work.  I have to restart my airport everytime!

Ok I'm just guessing at your topology here...  But... Do we have your Western Digital drive connected into the usb of an airport?
I'm stilll not fully sure on what we have here...

  • How do I connect an external hard drive to an airport?

Here what's going on. I have an old aiport, Iomega external hard drive and a Netgear N router. My goal is so connect the external hard drive to the airport via the USB port so I can access my photos through the network. I have a Mac Book pro with a full hard drive and a PC laptop. The Netgear N router is currently connected to my cable modem and the Airport is connected to the Netgear Router in bridge mode. However when I connect the External HD to the Airport it cannot be seen. I can see it when I connect it to my mac directly but I would prefer to share my pictures over the network and keep the External HD stationary instead of moving wherever my laptop goes. I also read that the Airport can slow down the internet speed because it is not an "N" so that is why I currently have it in bridge mode. Is there anyway to get this done? Thanks in advance.

Can you clarify what model you mean by an old Airport? There's dozens of different AirPort base station models, and the only ones that work with a USB harddrive are the AirPort Extreme's with 802.11 n (flat, square-shaped with 4 ethernet ports). The AirPort Expresses and older dome-shaped base stations do not have that capability.
If you have an AirPort Extreme which meets the requirements of connecting a USB drive, you can verify whether it's connected by configuring it manually using the AirPort Utility and looking under the disks tab.
The following article tells you the various ways of connecting to the disk if it is recognized in the AirPort Utility and properly formatted:

Hi there. I also bought an iWires mini Display port to HDMI cable and have an LG LED/LCD TV. I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire.

  • Will a WD hard drive work with AirPort Extreme to connect with an iPad Air

Will a WD hard drive work with Airport Extreme to connect by a iPad Air

If you already have an AE and a WD drive .. the best idea is plug it in and see on a mac in airport utility is the drive recognised.
If not you have problems.. if it is formatted correctly (Not NTFS mainly) then it can be a drive that is not compatible.
assuming it works get your ipad and pay for filebrowser or at least download a test copy and see how it goes.
Always the best way to find out.. try it.

Oh ok, well that was what the test said prior to reformatting the hard drive. Now, it doesn't find any trouble no matter how many times I run it. That's what has me so confused, everything seems to check out and yet...I can't do anything, not even install the software!

What is the "other" category on my mac book pro for hard drive space? I found out that it is taking a whole lot of my computer's space...how do I find what it is and optimize it?

If you need to remove files for space see The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing space on your hard drive. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

  • Western Digital My Book 500GB External Hard Drive

    Hello,
Just wondering if anyone is using the Western Digital My Book 500GB External Hard Drive and how do you like it? A few people I know bought this one and say that they like it. One good thing is that it is already Mac compatible.
Any information on this would be great!
    Thanks,
    Simonne

Looks like it will work fine but I'd highly recommend you buy one that has both ext. FW and USB2 (as opposed to usb only).

  • I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? Create a personal cloud?

I want to use my Time Capsule as a central 'hub/hard-drive' in order to keep all my working files in one place. I then plan to use my laptops/desktops as peripheral devices for editing and creation of these files. Is it possible? To create a personal cloud?
Can someone advise as to whether i can do the following:
Future Internet connection -------------------TIME CAPSULE (containing all files) -------------- Backed up on the WD 2T Hard-drive I have
(not connected yet)                                         I                                                          (*connected to timecapsule physically)

(used for remote working)       (Used for home working)     (used for heavy CAD and rendering)    (not being used for anything at the moment)        (& iPods)
I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)
    Kind Regards
    Joe

The diagram was supposed to look more like this......
Internet ---------TIME CAPSULE(containing all files) --------WD 2T Harddrive

    Sorry!

  • External hard Drive on AX (Airport Express)

Hi...I know a lot of replies to this question ahve been a 'no', but I bought Airport Express froman Apple Store after having expressley (no pun intended) explained what I wanted to use my wireless network for – to connect 2 computers (G4 mirrored rdrive door version and ibook G4) and also to share an external hard drive. They recommended Airport Express. Now I find that it seems you can't actually do what I wanted it to do. Is there really no way around this? Can you see hard drives that are connected to the other computer possibly, or is there any software downloads for the Express that might allow a hard drive to be shared between the two computers?
G4 PowerMac Mirrored Drive Doors   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Running Airport Express

Klammstein, Welcome to the discussion area!
What are you trying to do?
You can not connect a USB hard drive to the AirPort Express (AX). The AX does not support a USB hard drive.
You could connect an Ethernet hard drive to the AX's Ethernet port IF the AX is using WDS to join a wireless network. This is easy if the source of your wireless network is another AX or an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Unfortunately very, very, very few 3rd party devices support Apple's WDS.
If the hard drive is connected to one of your computers, you must enable File Sharing on that computer and then the other computers can access that drive.

  • Does Time Machine support an external hard drive attached to Airport?

I was interested in setting up my external hard drive to my Airport Extreme base station and use Time Machine wirelessly. I have seen a few different answers on the forum and I'm wondering whether this is possible. (I do not have Time Capsule.) If so, can you provide an easy step by step as to how to set it up. Thanks!

Yes it's possible. Connect the drive and open Airport Utility. Click on the Manual Setup button. Then click on the Disks icon in the toolbar. Select the disk and turn on Sharing.
You can then open TM preferences where the shared drive should appear in the list of drives. If it does not show up then you will need to "mount" the drive by selecting Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu, then double-clicking on the shared drive's icon to login as a registered user.
Note that this is not supported by Apple.

  • I have linked my seagate hard drive to my airport extreme but can not seem to find it in finder any ideas

    Hi Help Please
i have just linked an external hard drive to my airport extreme but it does not seem to appear in finder under shared !!!! any ideas

i have plugged the hard drive into a usb router which in turn is plugged to to the AEBS it is visible in airport utility but then can not find it anywhere else!!
First, the drive must be formatted correctly to work at the USB port of the AEBS. That means a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. NTFS will not work.
You need to have a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
Next, you may not have configured the Finder Preferences to display a connected hard drive. Please follow these steps:
o Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
o Click Finder, then click Preferences
    o Click the General tab
o Under the heading of "Show these itmes on the desktop", make sure you have a check mark next to Connected Servers
Restart both the AirPort Extreme and your Mac
Open Finder and check under the SHARED heading for your AirPort Extreme icon
Click on your AirPort Extreme and a folder will appear in the window to the right representing your hard drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop
Hopefully, you are not planning to try to backup files using the Time Machine application, as this is not supported by Apple.

  • I recently had to install a new hard drive in my computer. This caused me to have to reload all content back to my iTunes and iPod. I have many apps on my iPod and i don't know how to transfer those back to my iTunes. Can anyone help?

I recently had to install a new hard drive in my computer. This caused me to have to reload all content back to my iTunes and iPod. I have many apps on my iPod and i don't know how to transfer those back to my iTunes. Can anyone help?

Right clicking on your ipod in the device list an d choosing "transfer purchases" will copy apps and bought media from iTunes to your computer. Due to the new iTunes library on your new HD, iTunes will erase your ipod during the first sync. To save your data to the computer take a look at this article about saving data from your device to a computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
Basically it's backing up manually, transferring her purchases (apps and bought music), letting iTunes erase the ipod due to the new iTunes library, and restoring from the manual backup again, to get all the data and settings back.
Make sure your new computer account is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • I can't see hard drive attached to Airport extreme from Windows XP computer

I have a Windows XP computer on my network. I can no longer see the network hard drive attached to Airport Extreme from the XP computer. I can see it with all the MACs on my network and all the Windows 7 computers. I can connect to the internet with the Windows XP computer. I previously had no problem seeing the network hard drive attached to the airport extreme from the XP computer and one day it just disappeared. I have deleted and reinstalled Bonjour, not just Bonjour print services. I can print to a network printer that is not attached to the Airport Extreme. Help!

Well, I'm stumped. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support-- they ran through the scenarios I had already been through, and they came up with nothing useful. I ended up taking a second 160gb HD that was formatted NTFS, and formatted if for HFS+. This drive was visible through Finder. I took the same drive, formatted it for FAT32 and, surprise, surprise, NOTHING VISIBLE.
The "just works" philosophy is OK, but it's bunk when it comes to network drive support. I'm doubting the wisdom of this purchase now.
$2500 for a computer that can't connect to a network drive that can be seen by an $500 Dell laptop?
The issue simply seems to be this: put a FAT32 drive on another box, and it can be shared by Macs and Windows boxes.
Put that same FAT32 box on an AirPort Express, and my Mac is BLIND. It can't see the drive.
