Lost 10GB of hard disc space within a few hours

I use free space and i noticed that within a few hours I lost 10 GB of free space. I had similar issue before when i used outlook. Now i dont use outlook. Any help appreciated

Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Lost hard disc space

Hi,
I recently just realised that i am running out of hard disc space but i cannot understand why. My disc is 150gb and i have 20gb free. when i select my hard disc and check info it says i have used 92gb, but when i go through and check each individual folder on my disk the total only comes to 24gb (all apps, library, music, video, system, users etc).
How can this be?
Is there a program i can use to visually represent where all my disc space has gone to? I remember when i used a pc there was a program that showed hard disc usage as a pie chart.

When you use the Get Info command on a folder, invisible files are not included in the total. But they are included in the Get Info sums for the hard disk.
Disk Inventory X (free) will show the size of those invisible files as well. There is also WhatSize (formerly free, not $13 shareware).

Loss of hard disc space; can you easily manually defrag HD

As I was moving some video clips in iMovie files, I noticed that I lost a considerable amount of hard disc space...probably about 20gb. Files were not added...only clipped, edited and moved. When I cut a small amount of video, iMovie says there is about 20gb in trash. But when I empty trash, the 20gb does not get added back into available hard disc space. Can't explain. The only cause I can guess is defragmentation.
I've rebooted computer. No change. I've run disc utility. No change
I understand OSX defrags on its own, but is there a way to manually free up space?
I'd prefer to not run a third-party utility, unless it's absolutely reliable.

Available Hard Disc Space

I have an iMac4 which I bought a year ago with 500 Gb of hard disc space. I had an iBook with 40 Gb of space and when I got my new machine I transferred all the info across straight away. The strange thing was that I then appeared to have used about 250 Gb of the space on my new HD. This has puzzled me for tha past year! How does 40 Gb expand on transfer to take up nearly 250 Gb of space??
I have just looked through some past posts and downloaded 'WhatSize' to see if that can shed any light on the problem. Unfortunately it hasn't! It is telling me that I have a capacity of 465 Gb, I've used 281 Gb and have 183 Gb available. There is nothing strange or startling on my Mac. I have MS Office 2001, some itunes and some photos. Nothing outrageous as we just use the Mac for normal, low level family stuff.
'What Size' show that that the HD is using the following space:
24.9 Gb Users
9.83 Gb Library
6.93 Gb Applications
2.82 Gb The Sims 2.localised
1.64 Gb System
1.96 Gb private
513 Mb usr
388 Mb Applications (Mac OS 9)
Those are the main ones followed by a list of others (about 15) none of which takes up more than 240 Mb. When I add up all of the above it makes about 50 Gb. Where's the other 230 Gb gone?!!!
I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this for me.

Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006 so it seems odd that it's only a year old. I suspect that you have an Intel iMac. Could you check the processor in  > About this Mac.... Thanks.
465Gb is the correct figure for your hard disk. Data is stored in a binary fashion but hard disks are sold in decimal notation. The conversion calculation for Gigabytes is
(500 x 10003) / 10243 = 465.66Gb.

Blu-ray Error Code 25 Note: Not Enough Hard Disc Space

I'm trying to make a Blu-ray image on my computer and recieving an error that states:
Blu-ray Error
Not enough free storage, "code 25" Note: Not enough Hard disc space
Now I first thought to check my hard drive but I have plently of space. Next I noticed that encore CS3 was trying to make an image that is 340GB in size!!! Why would it do that? My project only has 4 assets. HELP this is going from bad to worse.

My longer notes on this error:
The most common workaround for this is to build to a folder and burn with ImgBurn (for PC) or toast (for Mac).
Searches show that there has not been success in many situations. I do not believe that it is one problem.
I have generally believed that the error refers to temporary storage on the hard drive. And users underestimate the amount of temporary hard disk drive space used. For bluray it is about twice the disk or more.
Some users experience this error when they are creating dual layer BD disks, and a layer is more than 25G. Each video/layer must fit on one side.
And some users successfully burn their disk by re-encoding to a lower bitrate (a 25G BD disk does not hold 25G). Encore uses padding to predict the size on disk (e.g. add 10% to the amount of space it predicts that build will use), and it can be wrong.
Always good to "run as administrator, though I don't know that ever fixed this issue if someone wasn't.
For CS4 there was a required update for a Roxio component. I believed this was a temporary problem due to the combination of Win7 and Encore CS4, but users on newer OS and Encore have reported resolution of problems after installing the patch.

Running out of hard disc space

I am running out of hard disc space on my PC (Windows XP).
Once I have uploaded songs onto my pod, is there a setting on iTunes so I can get rid of the songs from my PC without them being deleted when I next upload?

There is another way. Although it's quite stupid it might be what you're after, i dunno, so i thought i'd mention it... each track is on the ipod twice however so essentially it only has half the capacity.
If you copy the Songs to the ipod as an external hard drive and then add those to the itunes library it'll automatically sync them onto the ipod as normal. Obviously this is a silly idea really a new HDD or using manual mode is much more sensible but just in case this is useful to you.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.

How to make more hard disc space available

Working in iMovie, I ran out of hard disk space so I cleared Trash and moved everything that was not essential for the task in hand onto a memory stick, including most applications such as iWork. However, no matter what I removed or cleared I was unable to recover half the 55GB nominally available on the McIntosh HD. What will be tying up the 25+GB of the nominal 55GB available and can I free it up?

actually most of the data is in the iMovie event, not the project. The project is small until you "Share" and then it contains a copy of the QT movie, that you can only see if you right click (control click) the project and "show package contents". you can toss those Qt movies (you can always make them again) if you want and they are there.
If you are sure you will never want the unused parts of the clips (stored in iMovie events) again, go to "move event to trash" and you will be prompted to delete
"delete unused" or delete entire clip. If you delete unused it will take a while to process, but will then trash every clip that you didnt use and any part of any clip you did use , keeping just that parts of the clips you used in your project. Then you will have to get them to the trash through the events browser window, then empty the trash. The other way is to choose "space saver" and that will toss (for all your events, not just the one you highlight) any clips not used, leaving the clips you do use alone, a safer way to free up space, but wont free up as much space.

Preserving Hard Disc Space

I wasn't sure if I should post this in the iPod section or the iTunes section. I am using a PC running Windows XP and iTunes 7. I have a 80 GB iPod 5. I mostly use it with a video docking station to watch movies while on plane flights .
I would like to put movies on my iPod, then remove the movies from my computer - backing them up to a data DVD. This way I will be able to build up a collection of movies without using up all of my hard drive in the process.
With the iPod connected, I went to the MyiPod Summary page in iTunes and checked the box that says "Only Sync Checked Items." Then I went to the movies page in iTunes and unchecked each movie.
iTunes immediately updated my iPod by erasing all the movies. Is there a way to safely remove the movies from the hard disc and leave them on the iPod?

Only syncing checked files means only checked files go onto the iPod. When you then uncheck them, they are removed from the iPod, asyou found out.
To leave files on the iPod and not have them in iTunes, you need to switch the iPod over to manual syncing rather than auto syncing...

Importing library & hard disc space

Just got my new alum macbook and have a question before importing my photos from my QNAP NAS.
If I import my library of photo's (4-years worth), does iPhoto read it from my NAS or does it copy them to my macbook? I don't want thousands of photo's eating into my new macbook's hard drive.
Further, I have everything backed up and don't know if iPhoto would be easier to use with everything copied to a portable external drive (WD Passport) or just wireless connecting to my NAS. I need direction on how to proceed....

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
By default iPhoto will copy all the files into it’s Library.
You can set it not to do this - but I strongly urge you not to change the default setting, especially as you are new to both iPhoto and the Mac.
But here goes:
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.

To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.
Note: If you run iPhoto on an External Disk it must be
a: formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and
b: must have a wired connection.
If the disk is not formatted appropriately you will have issues saving edits and sharing the photos, and the Library database file is prone to damage on wireless connections.

Hard disc space doesn't get updated

Hi!
I have a Macbook 2Ghz Core Duo. 60 GB HD. well, now I got about 7,5 GB free. I I was planing of cleaning up my HD. Remove pictures, duplicates and not used software.
The problem is that when I trash something, and empty the trash. The HD info lower the free space instead of freeing. I was as low as 100mb so I rebootet my macbook and it shows 15GB free.
What can the problem be? And still after taht reboot, it still got that problem.
(btw. not using firevault)

The harddive icon on the desktop doesn't seem to be updating at all times for some reason. A finder window in the same volume shows the right free space in the bottom of the window.

Hard Disc Space DISAPPEARING

Using 10.5.6 on a Powerbook G4. 100 GB drive, What Size reports 27.2 gigs used. I have 248 mb remaining. The system is very sluggish.
I have run DU, then Onyx to delete all caches. No improvement.

My iPod nano 4GB (2nd gen.) battery was great, now its dying within a few hours?

I have a iPod nano 4 GB (2nd gen.) I have had it for years and up till recently the battery was great on it.
For a few weeks now my battery will die very quickly. I will have it fully charged and within 2 hours it will be dead. I have no applications running, just music. Nothing has changed at how I use it, but the battery just does not hold.
I charged it again last night and listened to music for about 30 min when I checked it, the battery was about dead. I gave it a few min. then it said it was half way charged?
I do not have wi-fi or anything on this...just music.
I also checked to make sure its software was up to date which it is. Can it just be the batterys worn out?

Yes. Your iPod's Lithium ion battery will slowly start to lose its ability to retain full capacity over time. Nothing lasts forever. Sorry.

Why do my Podcast episodes appear within a few hours on my iTunes Podcast channel, but they sometimes take DAYS to appear in the iTuned PC Client software?

I've got a strange situation where my iTunes podcast channel has published podcast episodes appearing on the website a few hours after release, but the podcast episode does not appear in the iTuned client software on a PC / Mac for multiple days? This appears to have gotten worse in the last month or so
Any comments or suggestions, anyone, other than having Jobs to a ressurection trick ?

I'm afraid I can't advise on Windows software. I can't see any reason why it should behave differently from iTunes on a Mac: it's reading exactly the same data. Sometimes the Store is slow to catch up, so that new episodes can take a few days to appear (though they appear immediately when subscribing) but that isn't the case here as the Store matches the feed.
As this is evidently a problem with accessing the podcast, rather than creating it, you could ask in the iTunes for Windows forum.

Macbook air hard disc full

I am new to Mac's! Loving it. I am lost why the hard disc space is full, and its all yellow, not sure what that means? Help!

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
