Lost cause

I emptied my cache, deleted the iweb files on my idisk. And still I can't publish anything!!!!! How come there where files on the idisk if the sites could not be published.. don't answer that I don't care.. I just want to know what I can do to make this nightmare end besides shuting the computer and heading into the snow storm to buy a case of beer...

Don't give up just yet.
I do mine all on my PowerBook wirelessly.
Just for the sake of it go to your iDisk.
On iDisk theres a folder called "Web" within that folder is the iWeb folder and the Index.html file - DELETE them.
Now within iWeb the app, go through your creation page by page, I as a rule for consistency and simplicity, try to make sure all my images are the same file format i.e all jpegs or tiffs.
Try "Republishing" knowing your iDisk files are clean and see if that helps.
This way there's no "overwriting" involved and one clean upload.
Also, as you make changes and adjustments within iWeb, use CMND+S to save all your changes before publishing.
I think it comes down to small things that can maybe make it all go smooth.
Good luck let us know.

  • My iPod 5th gen is no longer charging. I've cleaned out lint, switched chargers, and reset the device more times than I can count. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to fix it, or if it's a lost cause.

I've had my iPod touch 5th gen for a little over 2 years now. a few weeks ago, I went to plug my iPod into the charger. After about 20 minutes I went to go get it so I could reply to texts and clear some notifications and I noticed that it was still at 20%. So I tried a different cord, different outlet, cleaned out any lint that might be in there, and reset the iPod more than once. Nothing worked. Eventually the problem corrected itself. But then it happened again a few days later. And then it happened just recently, and now it's happening again. In total it's happened 4 times, the first 3 times its corrected itself, but this time it's not. I'm not sure if there's anything else I can do, or if it's just a lost cause.

  • Is the 5530 a lost cause?

It seems to be the forgotten about brother of the 5800, Its buggy as hell, sure there is a V2 update which very few people can get and those who have say its made matters worse
For me we have the following issues
Very poor quality on youtube, infact unwatchable
BBC Iplayer doesn't work at all
    Web browser that keeps exiting
    Unreliable battery indicator
Phone turns of when receiving a call
Light that flashes even after you've read the message
    Lines appearing across screen
    Lock ups
    Reboots
All in all not got, and a factory reset does no good,

Very poor quality on youtube, infact unwatchable - Seems the same as the 5800 to me when used over wi-fi.
BBC Iplayer doesn't work at all - Thats the BBCs fault, not Nokia's.
Web browser that keeps exiting - I had that issue with a couple of sites in the v11 firmware, v20 fixed it for me with those particular sites.  You could always use an alternative browser like skyfire or opera mobile/mini for troublesome sites.
Unreliable battery indicator - Thats due to the nature of lithium ion batteries, the 5530 doesn't behave any differently to the 5800.
Phone turns of when receiving a call - Never had that issue in v11 or v20, could be caused by your sim card.
Light that flashes even after you've read the message - Bug in v11, fixed in v20.
Lines appearing across screen - Not had this issue, sounds similar to the 5800's faulty screen issue.
Lock ups - Had a couple of those on v11, not one since updating to v20 on Monday.
Reboots - Same answer as above, again can also be caused by the sim or even installed software/themes.
Thats all based on my personal experience with the 5530xm.

  • How can I get apple to warranty my iPod touch 4th gen? It has always had issues and seems to be a lost cause. Will not connect to wi-fi. It also has cracked screen, but that is not the issue.

It has a cracked screen also but that is not the issue. I am willing to live with the screen

Unfortunately, ANY signs of 'neglect or damage' automatically become the cause of any issues you're having. As in it doesn't matter if your screen was flickering before it was dropped, when they see the dent or cracked screen, that screen flicker was caused by the drop. Because they  have no way to know if you are telling the truth (it's nothing personal, they just literally dont' know) so any signs of damage become the reason for your issue. The only way out of that is if you had taken in your iPad and, even if you didn't get it replaced, an apple employee can have documented that yes, that issue existed before the drop.
It's not fun, I know, but that's just how it is. Any signs of 'neglect or damage' and that 'neglect or damage' is the cause of your issues.

  • Still having import problems.... Lost Cause???

After trying every possible solution (including upgrading 9.1 to 9.2 for Classic) that I can dream up or have read about, I am desperate for an answer. I have two potential Email programs that I could use in Tiger: "Mail" or "Entourage 2004". Either one suits me, but neither one will import my old email from Outlook no matter how I configure the import or where I put the actual "Messages" file. It's a huge file, at about 1000 MB. I've read that "Mail" won't import from Outlook at all, and I've read that Entourage should import this file.
What I get when I run the import function and click down to the Identities folder inside of the Microsoft User Data folder is grayed out files. It's not just the "Messages" file that's grayed out, it's actually all of them (Database; Signatures; Contacts etc.)
In fact, I just tried launching Outlook 5 in Classic to see if I could import there. Still no success, no matter which import format I select (as text or from application).
Also - over the course of yesterday, I copied the folder and it's contents more than once and placed each copy in a few different places so as to be able to try each location. Could multiple copies be the cause? If so - how do I know which to delete, and where should everything actually go?
There MUST be a solution. I've spent literally days trying to figure this out.

    Take a look at O2M.

    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

  • I've got a 10.5.8 power mac G5 but would like to upgrade to new software, lion and office 2011, but that requires an intel processor. Is this a lost cause? If not any ideas what it might cost me?

Okay looks like I didn't understand the format for these questions. I have used my Mac BookPro almost exclusively for work and my Power Mac for my home recording studio but now want the Power Mac to be a second computer for my work. So I need to upgrade to Lion and install office 2011. So, considering my subject line, any help offered is appreciated.
    Thanks.

The max OS for all Macs with a PowerPC processor is Leopard OS 10.5.x.
If you are going to consider getting a newer, but used, Mac, here's the requirements for Lion.
    Lion 10.7 System Requirements
        •    Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor (most models released since late 2006 - early Intel-based Macs with Core Solo or Core Duo processors aren't compatible)
        •    2GB of memory (recommend at least 4GB -- and ideally even more, as you'll see benefits in many computing tasks)
        •    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended) for Lion download from Apple App Store; or Leopard 10.5.x if using Lion on USB drive
        •    7GB of available space (10GB recommended)

  • G4 POWERBOOK LOST CAUSE?

My sister lives in Manhattan and owns a G$ Aluminium with 12 inch screen. Few months ago was running to catch a cab and slipped and fell and the G4 took a tumble. As I look at it it looks like the screen came a little ajar. After the accident she tried to turn it up and no power. I am new to MACs,is this worth repairing? On PC Laptops when the screen breaks it still powers up. I think she fried the main board? I realize it is difficult to make a diagnois with out examining it but any opinions out there would be appreciated. Here are 2 pictures I took of the damaged area. Rest of Powerbook is fine.

Mmmh... I don't know, I might be wrong, but you shouldn't fry the motherboard because of a fall...
Have you take a look at the RAM? perhaps they moved because of the shock.
Also, does the HDD power up? Any noise at all coming from the PB?
BTW, what it that "half circle" feet under the PB on the pics you linked?
Are those special feet to raise the back of the PB?

  • Lost Cause?  Mini Mac + Sony Handycam???

    Hello -
Im new to the Mac world. I just got a Mini Mac for x-mas, and I have a Sony Handycam DCR-DVD403. It seems that they arent compatible. The camcorder takes movies and pictures, which I was hoping to be able to use with my Mini. It does have a USB port, but nothing seems to happen when I try to connect.... I was thinking the first step would be to get a firewire adapter to see...Im at a loss, is there no way to make the two work... The mini dvd that goes in the camcorder, of course doesnt work with the Mac MINI....
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
iMovie, like all DV editing programs (including Final Cut Express and even Final Cut Pro), require you to use FireWire to connect. This is part of the "DV" standard. You can't connect a DV camera via USB because then it wouldn't actually be "DV". I looked around for a couple of minutes, you'd think "what ports does the DCR-DVD403 have?" would be an easy question to answer. But although Amazon.com offers an "iLink" (Sony's name for FireWire) 4-pin to 6-pin cable as an accessory, I couldn't find anywhere that said that camcorder actually HAD an iLink port. If it does, you may be able to use a 4-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable. However, cnet.com's review said this camcorder simply wasn't compatible at all with a Mac.
Does it mount like a hard drive when you connect it with USB? If not, then it doesn't support the USB Mass Storage standard. So, you won't be able to see it with iPhoto to download the still pictures either.

  • Upgrade to os4 - A way to get lost information - CONTACTS and TEXTS

I have been spending hours, and hours, trying to figure out what happened to this phone. I upgraded to os4, and when I did, I lost everything (contacts, texts, pics, apps, etc.), eventhough I backed up everything on a weekly basis. Not sure where Apple dropped the ball on this major issue. I have been looking for hours to find a fix. I came across a post that was helpful in finding a way to solve some of my problems, including FINDING MY LOST CONTACTS! I have to manually enter them into my phone again, but at least I have them! Like, me I am sure many of you don't memorize phone numbers anymore. I have just added to a post I found by Somebody2 on another forum (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11831613), as a starter, and added to it, to give more specific directions. I am extremely thankful; to have found this! I am still looking to find a way to get back my lost pictures, but that may be a lost cause. Hopefully this can help some of you out there, like it did me(....sigh of relief). Anyway, here is a way to find those lost contacts and texts:
Here are the main steps, assuming that you did backup your iPhone using iTunes recently:
    1. Use the following tutorial to install FireFox with SQLite Manager add-in and point it to your backup folder:
    http://www.skyontech.com/blog/iPhone-app-data-access
(**when following these directions, make a copy of the backup folder, and paste it on your desktop to make the overall process a little easier)
**2. Once you have opened SQLite, Click on the options (hammer/screwdriver icon) at the top. Change the "Default file extension for SQLite files" to mddata then click OK. Next, Click on the word "Directory" at the top, just under the menu bar. Then select choose "Select default directory". Choose the most recent folder inside the backup folder you copied to the desktop, then click OK.
**3. Now the more time consuming part (took me at least 30 minutes). Beside the word "Directory" you can now choose files from a drop down menu. The easiest way I found to do this is to click on the 1st one, then click go. You can continue down the list using the arrow key, and click go each time you go to a new file... As you do this, you will see the left side change. Sometime it has nothing (No directory found), and other times there is a list of menus (master table, tables, views, indexes, triggers). I found mine in the 38...range out of the hundreds of files.
**4. Continue to go through the files until you see "ABGroup" under the tables menu as an options (it does not show up under the "master table" menu, just under "tables").
    5. Once you have found "ABGroup", Click on the "Execute SQL" tab in the SQLite Manager and copy/paste the following:
    ====================
SELECT First, Last, Organization, Note, value as Phone FROM ABPerson, ABMultiValue WHERE ABMultiValue.property=3 AND ROWID=record_id ORDER BY First
    ====================
    Then click "Run SQL" button.
You should now see the list of all contacts backed up from your iPhone. You can also highlight all rows with the mouse and the SHIFT key, then right-click and select "Copy Rows as CSV for Excel", then paste them to Excel so that you can print your contacts spreadsheet.
NOTE: You can do the same thing for finding text messages. The only difference, is that you want to look for the word "message" under the tables menu instead of abgroup.
I have never posted here, but this was a HUGE help to me, so I thought I would try to share a more detailed way to get these back. I know it's not easy, but IT WORKS!! I am so relieved, and thanks a lot Somebody2!!!!
If anyone knows how to recover lost pictures, even if it is a process like this, please, please, please post it.

oops...ouch...hard way to learn to always back up your stuff
you "never" backed anything up?? not even an old backup someplace? you really don't have to answer...i'm just feeling your pain. difficult.

  • Lost pics to accidental sync... Help!

I was recently given a used iPod Classic by my wife when she upgraded to the iPhone4. I downloaded iTunes and was working my way through set up when I discovered that the iPod had started syncing my photos from my computer, REPLACING some 700+ pictures from my 4yo son's past, some of which only existed there. (Yeah... I know. They should have been backed up, but that is a discussion I have had a hundred times with the Mrs and has fallen on def ears.)
I stopped the sync as soon as I had noticed it, but her pictures are gone. Is there any way to recover them?

Thanks. I had just switched to disk mode when I noticed the sync happening. I did not do this manually, so it sounds like a lost cause. Apple makes some great products, but it really shouldn't be this easy to lose your data. Maybe they're too smart. There was no warning about erasing anything, no "Are you sure" prompts, and now a huge chunk of my son's life in pictures is gone.
Thank you again for your response.
    Feeling dejected,

  • I lost my iPad on an international flight.

I lost my ipad on an international flight. Tried to wipe it through an app but not sure it worked. What else should I do? Please help!

If it's a 3G device you should also inform the cellular service provider that the device is missing/stolen.  I can feel your pain in this matter, I've never left a device on a plane, but know that once you disembark from the flight, getting anything back that was left onboard is pretty much a lost cause.

  • Entourage crash- all data lost!

Microsoft Entourage just crashed on me for no apparent reason. I first saw a message related to a problem with the database, but I honestly didn't pay attention to it. When Entourage crashed shortly after that, it asked if I wanted to restart, but when it opened everything was lost. No folders, nothing in the Inbox...nothing. I installed the 10.4.6 update but I'm not sure if that's related.
After searching other posts, I've tried to accsss the library file, but there doesn't seem to be anything there (unless I'm not doing this correctly).
Any suggestions? Or is this just a lost cause??
    Thanks,
    Karen
    G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This is a relatively frequent, recurring and ongoing problem for Entourage users. My advice is generally to migrate away from the application at your first opportunity, as it is prone to such data corruption issues. If that is not practical, you'll need to become an Entourage maintenance expert to reduce the likelihood of future problems, and you will need to back up regularly.
You'll find this site a great place to start when trying to deal with these issues:
    http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/database.html
Link segments four and five on this page may be particularly helpful, but you should read the entire document before attempting to recover or reconstruct your Entourage database.

  • Lost LAN Connection in MS Exchange 2003 network

    Hi everybody.
I have  a connection problem which my ICT consultant can't solve or even figure out the cause.
In my company there's a MS Exchange 2003 network. I'm the only one running a Mac (Air bought in early 2011), as the others need to work on Solidworks and need Win machines. In order to connect with email and calendar I'm forced to use Parallels Desktop with Win7 installed to use Outlook and Access for our Internal Self made database.
What is happening is that sometimes when connected through WiFi the server connection is lost, causing loss of work if I had some files open from the server.
Considering that we have some interferences in our area I got the USB Ethernet adapter.
    Worse than ****.
When cable connected the connection to server is lost every minute, not only if the Mac goes to sleep, but even during normal work. Unless I "stimulate" the finder every 30 seconds the server connection get lost, sometimes is sufficient to click on the saved preferred positions in the side bar to wake it up, but most of the times if I'm working on files on the server this is not sufficient and the job done is lost.
Also this sometime cause a major failure in the system and I'm forced to shut down the Mac by holding the button.
    Any clues?
    Thanks

Thanks for the help on making restore points, and on getting Boot Camp 2.1; I recently updated Apple Software Update to 2.1.1, so that's working, and it did suggest BC 2.1 as a downloadable. I'll probably do it manually, though, just to be on the safe side of things, as I don't trust Software Update even in OS X for most things (except to tell me what updates are available; I usually download and install everything manually anyway). Windows Update is a different matter, as I can't get most of the patches it offers by myself (not that I haven't tried--most are available only through the utility).
As for backing up and restoring from a clone on a second hard drive: I can't afford to do that at the moment, as I can't afford the hardware, software, or time needed to prepare a clone backup. And besides, as I said before, I don't do enough in the Windows partition that demands such backup work be done. I use Vista primarily for things I can't do in OS X, with Windows-specific apps.
Still not sure how to go about updating the LAN port driver, or if it even needs to be updated. If BC 2.1 doesn't do it, I'll look up the vendor through whatever link Windows Update provides for me. And I haven't received any word from Verizon about my modem needing a firmware update, but then again I haven't contacted them about it yet, and I'm not sure I need to, or if it really needs to be updated. I'm just hoping that if the connection drops again that it won't be necessary to update or replace the modem, that the problem remains in software. (Of course, I'll take whatever precautionary measures I can, but I can only do so much myself.)

  • Can I get lost photos back that were deleted in a sync?

I plugged my new iPhone 5 into my computer and was in iTunes. It prompted me to either use the phone as a new one or use a backup. I wanted my apps back so I used the back up, but then without warning or even letting me select what it would sync, it erased everything on my phone within 30 seconds. Can I get at least the photos back that I took of family over the holidays, or are they gone forever? Does Apple have a server where they store everything we all do on our phones, and could I maybe pay them to search and get those back for me?
    I'm afraid it's all a lost cause...

Well it's a newer iMac, but it's one I've been using for about a year. I had backed up my old 3G on it, but right before I plugged my new phone in to get me apps, I had downloaded the newest version of iTunes.
It was just a white screen and had that question on it. With two selection options, and then under the back up option was a drop down to choose which back up to use. No warning and no other dialog box opened after I clicked it either... reference the image in the link below.

  • Support issue - updates causing problems

i am still having problems which render existing sites which were working fine before muse beta 7 to display incorrectly, and in some cases unworkably. i understand that this software in in beta mode but in order for us to use it and feed back on the issues we are finding we need to be supported by adobe in that process so that we trust that we will be enabled to deliver sites to people at our end.
i posted an issue here last week which no-one has come back on. since there is currently no other way of receiving support than to do this it leaves us somewhat on our own when these requests and issues are ignored.
i now hoave several clients requiring updates to their sites that i am having to tell to wait because my software is letting me down. how come no-one at adobe is picking these things up? it makes using muse and trying to take part in a rigorous beta test very difficult to do at this end. what do we have to do to get things working properly again please? anyone?

Yes me to, i just updated a site today, and wasted a whole day on it! i had split the content between muse and bc, so i could allow certain pages to be updated by the person i designed the site for. The update wiped all the image files that were uploaded to business catalyst. A accordian tab i had used was sudenly didnt work and i had to come up with a different solution. This sort of thing is maddening. Im no coder but at least i have learnt enough about how bc and muse work, or dont work together to get the site back on track again. I am loosing faith in adobe though, and as adesigner using their products for some 15 odd years i hope they perhaps read this. There is nothing user friendly about bc. I think adobe are just trying to stitch together two lost causes they have overinvested in. I have made three sites so far, i think i may call it a day if muse doesnt radically improve.
