How can I get apple to warranty my iPod touch 4th gen? It has always had issues and seems to be a lost cause. Will not connect to wi-fi. It also has cracked screen, but that is not the issue.

Unfortunately, ANY signs of 'neglect or damage' automatically become the cause of any issues you're having. As in it doesn't matter if your screen was flickering before it was dropped, when they see the dent or cracked screen, that screen flicker was caused by the drop. Because they have no way to know if you are telling the truth (it's nothing personal, they just literally dont' know) so any signs of damage become the reason for your issue. The only way out of that is if you had taken in your iPad and, even if you didn't get it replaced, an apple employee can have documented that yes, that issue existed before the drop.
It's not fun, I know, but that's just how it is. Any signs of 'neglect or damage' and that 'neglect or damage' is the cause of your issues.

There are two ways:
either going to settings>General>software update
or
connecting it to itunes and a window will pop up asking you to update and click download and update with the ipod pugged in thw entire time -
Any iTunes above 10 will screw up .mov accessibility in FCP, so I do not want to download iTunes 11 just to get this iPod Touch updated to 5 or 6.
Can I download the update some other way?If you have a 4G iPod (one with cameras) you can only go to iOS 6.2.1 and that requires iTunes 10.7 or above.
If you have a 3G you can go to 5.5.1 with iTunes 10.5 or later.
A 2G can only go to 4.2.1

I updated my Ipod touch 4th gen (IO6 or whatever its called) And it has the picture that says to connect my ipod to Itunes, and I did, now it says "ITunes has detected an Ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this Ipod before it can be used with ITunes." I just updated it and now I have to restore it??! I don't wanna lose all my things on my ipod just for a stupid update! Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

Connect the old iPod, launch iTunes. From the menu bar click File > Transfer Purchases From
Now connect the new iPod and sync Apps, Music, etc.
As for selling the old one tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

What itunes version do you have?
Are you sure you have an ipod touch 4th gen? You said it was old, but the 4th gen is the latest ipod touch.

i can't get itunes to recognize my ipod touch, 2nd gen. synced it yesterday. have restarted both computer and ipod. my iphone syncs just fine.

My iPod has a cracked screen, but that isn't the problem. Can I replace it?
For about two to three months my iPod Touch 4th gen has had no sound. It doesn't work. I've tried all resets and the sound comes back for a couple hours, then dies again. This iPod was a replacement, but it's still covered by the first one's warranty. I've been planning to take it back but never gotten around it, because its a big hassle and costs a lot in petrol. I sort of regret not doing it now. My screen just cracked (Of all things, my crystal necklace dropped onto it) so can I still get it replaced seeing as the screen isn't the problem, but the sound issue is?
