Lots of hard locks and kernel crashes/oops ["SOLVED"-bad motherboard]

I have been experiencing a lot of hard locks and kernel crashes/oops(es?) lately. This computer has always had random freezes in both WinXP and Linux (various distributions -- including live cds).
Here is my latest crash (from dmesg):

I added nosmp and the other parameters at the install/rescue cd's suggestion. I tried using the microcode package (I have a P4 HT) as suggested by someone in another thread.
I've found that the freezes will happen at the beginning of heavy CPU or disk usage (such as compilation or pacman db parsing). The hd is not the original one from this system (it was a hand-me-down), so I don't think that's the problem. The video card is different and the RAM is new. The only components that are still around are:
P4 HT processor (2.60 ghz)
Albatron  PX865PE II
Enermax power supply
Any ideas? It also says "bad eip value" when the system has kernel crashes (especially on boot).

  • Hard Feezing and Kernel Panics - Early 11 MBP

Hey just wondering if anyone has any insight into this...
I've been experiencing hard freezing and kernel panics on my Early 11 Macbook Pro for several months.  The hard freezing only happens when I wake up my system from sleep.  I'll open the lid and when it happens, within seconds, everything locks up.  No spinning wheel, just frozen machine and I have to do a hard reboot.  I also get random kernel panics as well.
I took it in the the Genius Bar a few weeks ago, they ran tests and said the hardware was all fine and that I should reinstall Lion after a clean format.  Well I did that and still having issues.  Not sure if it's being caused by a 3rd party app...or if I really do have bad hardware after all.
When they did a diagnostic they said that 'soundflower' was showing up in my kernel panic log and that I should find what that is and delete it, so I did.  In my most recent and only kernel panic, shown below, I don't see any 3rd party language anywhere.
Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

  • Kernel crash due to bad RAM??

The question: After running many RAM tests using Rember I find all my good (maybe) sticks logging a "Stuck address", but without any failure notes and then the tests continue on without any more issues reported. Could this be normal?
Using Rember, I did identify one very bad stick and removed it from the computer. It was so bad that it caused Rember to crash and then immediately crashed the computer. I'm hoping it was the one causing all my problems.
I've been fighting a kernel crash problem for about a week. I suffered the first crash while attempting to download an upgrade to Flip4Mac (it allows Windows Media to play in Quicktime).
The first thing I did was buy a new 160GB external drive and backed up everything. Then I attempted to reload OS 10.3.9. Sometimes, just trying to restart from the OS X disk would result in a kernel crash. Sometimes, the install would begin but almost immediately end in a crash.
I reloaded 10.2.8 and got the system running again but crashes still occurred while trying to upgrade back to 10.3.9. After researching here and at other sites I concluded I might have a RAM problem. I downloaded Rember which is a GUI version of Memtest. That's when I found my one really bad piece of RAM. I have three more that all seem to test well except for the initial report of "Stuck address". All the remaining tests are passed fine and the system seems to be stable. Any comments from the more knowledgeable among us?

  • Hard Drive and IPod Crash at the same time

My hard drive crashed. I had some of the music backed up but not some recent itunes purchases. Also, my Ipod Mini died so I replaced it with the IPod video 30 gig version. Is there any way I can recover the music that I have already paid for? I go to check purchases and it asks for my Apple ID. My apple ID was the serial number of my dead Ipod mini, which I don't have any more and of course don't remember. How can I find out what my Apple ID was for the music I purchased? Some of those purchases are on my Ipod video so can I sink them back into my hard drive, or does Itunes overwrite everything in the Ipod? Thanks for your help.

  • Open dialog defaults to local hard disk and eventually crashes

Hello everyone. I am working with a client who is running PowerMac G5, Tiger 10.4.8. Here is the issue:
Every time he opens a file in any app (Adobe CS2, Macromedia suite, MS Office, etc) he has to navigate to the file server. In other words, none of the applications remember the last open path, it will default back to Computer > Volumes > SERVERNAME. The same thing doesn't happen if he drills down into a folder on his local hard disk. For example, if he were to open a Word document from /Users/MarkS/Documents/Folder1, close Word, and go to Open (File > Open, Command+O, etc) it goes back to /Users/MarkS/Documents/Folder1.
The other issue is if he tries to navigate back using the recently accessed folders (the dropdown menu in the Open Dialog sheet) then the application crashes (again, this is with any app).
He is connecting to the fileserver via AFP (Windows Server 2003 with ExtremeZ-IP 5), gigabit (on a dedicated switch to his department), and according to him, this issue began some time ago.
The only thing I've tried was to remove his Finder preference file, logged out, logged in, and after recreateding the Finder preference file he had the same results. Just to be sure it wasn't just his account on this PowerMac, I logged in with a different domain account and the same issues came up (i.e. with another user account on that same G5). So it makes me wonder if its a system wide issue.
    Any thoughts?
MacBook Pro 1.83, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard disk, Super Drive (nothing special!)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Turned out to be a simple fix. There were old names in the /Volumes directory, which simply had to be unmounted. If they were not unmounted, the GUI would recognize the Apple share, but the underlying system would create a new directory with a "-1" appended to the end, thus confusing the OS and causing the applications to crash.

  • HT4833 logic files on external hard drive and kernel panic

I was using 2 external HDs via the Sonnet sata pro express34 card in MaBookPro. One ext. HD had only Logic project files, the other had plugins. Logic 9.I.7 installed on the MBP i7 late 2010 (OS 10.6.8), with Motu 828 audio interface via FW400. All this worked for a number of projects (simple stereo masters). Then Kernel panic damaging one ext HD with plugins. Then with just the other extHD connected, problems began. Trying to bounce a song, it stopped and froze, kernel panic with damage to the ext HD.
Seemed Logic could no longer work with the files on the ext HD. Don't know if this began before or after the HD was damaged.
First HD couldn't mount so turned off journaling, mounted and enabled journaling again. Have been backing up all on that HD via FW800, then will erase and format it.
    Second HD had
    "...Keys out of order
    Rebuilding catalog B-tree.
The volume ONETB could not be repaired..."
I backed up the files, erased and reformatted it. Waiting to try the setup again until the problem is figured out.
    1) I see there is also a Logic folder on the MBP with 3 projects in it. Did this confuse the program to have this on the internal drive plus a Logic folder with projects on the external drive?
Can I set up the program so all projects always stay on the external drive, instead of a default which created these early projects on the MBP drive?
    2) Is this not the problem and the whole thing is a problem with the express/34 card esata drivers/kext files, or 32 bit vs 64 bit, or ...?
    Many thanks, chas

I don't see how to edit my post above. I did not intend to title it "HT4833", that was just a page I'd looked at in the learning about Logic stuff, and this showed up in my question title. Strange there seems not to be a way to edit posts.

  • Computer Forces Hard Shutdow and applications crash

    Two problems:
    1. Computer Forces Hard Shutdown - I have to press the power button for 4 seconds and then reboot machine.
    2. All of my applications (word, safari, etc) will close out unexpectantly. I have to reopen and I start all over again.
I've had this macbook for almost a year now and have had these problems from day 1. I usually encounter one of the two problems mentioned about during each use. Often, it will happen more than once during a session.

Have you had all the updates done. Random shutdown was a problem for a while on the early MacBook. Did you talk to apple about it.
There are some fixes but you have to contact apple before they can help you.

  • Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not do a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive and start anew.  My bad but is all lost??

Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not complete a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive (10.5.8) and start anew (10.6.3).  My bad but is all lost?? Years of very important information....

You will need to purchase reovery sofware such as such as FileSalvage
    http://subrosasoft.com/software/filesalvage
You can download a demo copy that will tell you what it can recover
If you want to recover that you must pay for the software then
When you do the recovery, you will need another disk drive to receive the recovered files
Having install a new operating system on the disk after the retformat is going to gradually reduce the amount of data that this software will be able to recover for you

  • Complete and unexpected hard-lock on authentication

Hello. I've recently experienced my first hard-lock on my MacBook Pro. I'm running 10.6.8, and I can't seem to figure out what cuased it. It's making me very worried for the health and stability of my system.
What happened was this: I use password protection on my screen saver, and I do not put my laptop into sleep mode. Instead I use a hotcorner to activate the screen saver when I walk away from the machine, and then reauthenticate when I come back. After about ~30 min away from the keys, I came back and tried to authenticate, only to find that the password input window was not accepting keyboard input. Eventually I realized that the system had hard locked for a reason I couldn't understand. I had to force the machine to power down, and then boot it back up. The reboot was slower than I'd expect (though maybe that was just my nerves and imagination). In the hour or so since then, it's not repeated itself, even when trying to replicate the circumstances of the lockup.
The console messages didn't help much, but perhaps someone else can make more sense of them than I can. From what I can gather, a backup started, and then the ethernet port went down. My VPN client (which wasn't running or connected) then tried to switch interfaces to see if other internet connections were available - despite my not being connected to the VPN or running the client.
Here's the relevent time stamped log entries between the first notice of hard-locking and rebooting. I've redacted computer, drive, and host names, as well as mac addresses and IP addresses. I'm not sure what to make of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if this was a fluke, or a harbringer of something more sinister.

I saw one very recent question where Test Pilot proved to be a problem.
In due course, you'll probably need to work your way through this -

  • Hard locked X6

I have an X6 on a contract with Three mobile that's coming to an end, I phoned Three and paid for and received an unlock code, but after several failed attempts the phone has become hard locked and no sims I try work even my still current contract one.
They told me to take it to a Three shop which I did but they couldn't do it and to be honest they didn't really know what they were doing, I have also tried the guys in phone shops and no one can seem to do it. Question is: will it be worth my time and effort locating a nokia care point/shop and will they be able to do it, as i'm no longer in the uk I do not want to make a wasted journey all the way to santa cruz only to find they can't do it or even have a nokia care point there, i'm stuggling to find out if they do as everything comes up in spanish and even google is stuggling to translate.
    So now two questions
1, Is there a nokia care point on Tenerife?
2, Will they be able to fix it?
    Manana maybe lol?
    Thanks.

I suspected as much at the moment it's just a gloryfied music player, the poor Indians on the Three help line are just reading from a general help sheet so not much sense or help coming from them, it's looking like brutal XXXXX abuse and firmware hacks... Failing that maybe I can send it back to Three? Then the only other option is a hammer and cancelling my direct debit as they are no longer providing a service... Lucky I brought my trusted old N73 which is now unlocked with me for the girlfriend to use and of course my sexy N8 ;-)

  • Macbook Pro Mid 2014 Hard Freezes and Crashes

So I bought my Macbook about a month ago, and ever since then Ive been having this same issue over and over again. I have tried every solution apple has thrown at me and nothing has seemed to fix it. I have sent it out for a repair, reinstalled the OSX, Cleared the pRam, and various other things. I have not narrowed down the situation myself and cant seem to figure out what is causing these hard freezes and crashes. It always happens randomly at something GPU related it seems. Almost like the video card gets to stressed out at crashes. From scrolling up the page of a website to switching to a different video on youtube, all these little and sometimes big things have caused it to crash. Apple has sent it out for repair and they claimed that they fixed the logic board, but that didn't work because the issue still persists. I have reinstalled the OSX from guidance of a apple care associate over the phone. Ive eliminated almost every possible situation they have given me and nothing seems to fix it. Im not sure if there is a defect in these particular models or I just got a lemon but either way its frustrating. I will post the specs below and provide any other info that is asked.
    SPECS:
    GPU: Intel Iris Pro
    Processor : 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

  • 10.8.5 crashes hard, fast, and often

Last week when all the updates dropped, I was thrilled. XCode 5? That's nice. iTunes? Sounds good. iOS 7? Yes, please. 10.8.5? Absolutely.
    Absolutely not, it turns out.
A day or two after that update got settled in, the crashing started. It would crash within minutes of logging in—the laptop I could leave running for a week at a time under 10.8.4 was suddenly doing very well if it could manage ten minutes at a time without a complete hard freeze or spontaneous shutdown. It could crash as me. It could crash as root. It could crash before login. It could crash a safe boot. I will not run this, Steve I Am. I do not like th......wait, where was I? Oh, yeah...
At the same time, Time Machine decided that the backup set I had needed to be redone, so I didn't have a backup to retreat to. And the Time Capsule itself which I was using as a wireless hub (but not a backup drive, since the disk was going bad) finally decided to report that its disk was going bad. It was also showing intermittent connection to the internet too (according to my phone), so it was pretty much begging to be replaced. I seriously thought that might help.
I tried reinstalling the whole OS from the Recovery partition. A few times. No go.
(And by the way, if ever I find the gentleman who had the idea for the self-deleting installer, I will step up to him, reach out, and shake his throat. I'm downloading this crap over DSL.)
I made an emergency thumbdrive which I could use to start the computer, and while it was pig-slow, it was at least stable. And I could use Disk Utility to create a DMG of the hard drive before I erased it completely and reinstalled the OS from scratch. And I did. That time, the computer booted just fine. The Migration Assistant took some time lining up everything that had to be moved over, but it finally started doing its thing.
This morning, it had finished. I rebooted. It hung a few times, including at reboot. The exact same problem came back, right along with my old profile.
I'm at my wit's end here. I can't afford to replace the computer. I have too much to lose not only in the old profile but all the software I had installed. What else can I try, or how can I debug this myself? I'm not afraid of a little terminal action, and in fact, on those occasions when I can get up as far as the login screen, the >console seems relatively stable.

All right. Having done some digging on the affected machine (booted from the "emergency key"), I can't find anything like a kernel crash log. I'm looking in /var/log; should I be digging elsewhere?
It's not specifically what you asked for, but below are four snippets from /var/log/system.log; Each one ends with a BOOT_TIME notice, indicating where I finally turned it back on. And yes, sometimes the up-time is less than two minutes.
I did notice something between a few of them: It looks like something's trying to order a kernel rebuild. And it's doing a very bad job of it.

  • Mounting USB Hard Drives and Hard Locking

So, it's been a long time since I've posted here which I have to say, is because Arch was running beautifully for a long time. Sadly though, my laptop was stolen and I was forced to buy a new one. With the new one, I've gotten everything mostly back up and running but I'm having an issue. Obviously the one in the subject line.
A few things to note about this install and after testing before posting.
    1. Brand new install
    2. All packages are current EXCEPT 3.  I currently have nvidia-256.53-1-x86_64, nvidia-utils with the same version, and kernel26-2.6.35.5-1. These are due to a black screen I was getting on starting my xserver.
    3. HAL is running
    4. Optical disks mount and umount cleanly.
    5. NTFS-3G is installed and working.
    6. My Windows 7 install on the same internal hard drive can be accessed and mounted without a hard lock.
My problem is this. Whenever I try and connect an external hard drive via USB, it takes a few seconds and then the whole machine hard locks with what looks like a kernel panic(can't do anything and I have blinking lights...ie capslock, etc).  This computer seems to have USB 3.0 which I noticed from Win7 awhile back if that makes a difference. (05:00.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation Device 0194 (rev 03) )
Last time I try to mount my WD Passport, I ran dmesg right after I plugged it in before I got my hard lock. The only thing I noticed were the entries at the bottom of things like this...
    xhci_hcd 0000:05:00.0: WARN: Stalled endpoint
I have no idea whether that has anything to do with it or not. I'd be more than happy to post config files if needed. I've tried googling, the wiki, and the forums and I'm stumped. I actually plugged my drive in one time and got it to mount and opened some folders. Afterward, it hard locked.

So, I started looking at my logs. Here's the bottom cut from errors.log:

Kernel messages show pretty much the same thing. These logs were from just a moment ago when I plugged it in and then removed it. Sometimes it seems to hard lock, others it doesn't. Got me.
