Lua Alchemy Demo Preview and Function Callback Question

Been working with Alchemy some more to get Lua working as a
scripting language. You can now create any AS class (available at
runtime) using Lua, call functions, set/get properties, and even
make Lua functions event listeners. Here is a preview of the demo
that will go out (including links to the google code project on the
help tab)
http://arcanearcade.com/Flex/LuaAlchemyDemoV.1a
This is just a preview of the V.1a release of the project. At
this time there isn't any Lua sugar to make calling AS look more
natural in Lua.
We have been trying to figure out how to detect when
ActionScript has cleaned up or no longer has need of a function -
we would like to cleanup the Lua reference to the function when it
isn't needed.

That would be pretty cool. Lua is a fairly tight language and
well designed for embedding. It is also pretty small so might not
be hard to port.

  • Preview and iCloud Related Questions

    What am I missing here...
    What's the point of having Preview with iCloud if I can't view it on my other devices like iPad/iPhone?
    App with iCloud integration doesn't seem to function with folks who have a "lot" of documents.  For example, I have a folder with ~50 files organizaed into 4 sub-folders, but moving to iCloud and Pages I now have a flat file system in a single folder.  Is this really the future?
    iCloud doesn't make sense for say a work Project effort where you would have multiple file formats or types for a single project (word, excel, numbers, pages, keynote, powerpoint, visio, etc).  I take it this isn't what iCloud is really intended for?  I would need to spread my single project out across multiple app folders?
    Maybe it's me but it still seems half-baked and not really thought out regarding how people actually "work".

    You have to turn on iCoud Photo Library
    On your phone: Settings > iCloud > Photos > turn on iCloud Photo Library
    This will upload any photos you take on your phone to the iCloud Photo Library (different than iCloud Drive).
    Now when you sign into iCloud.com you will see Photos. From there you can upload photos from your computer.
    They will still take up room on your phone but you can optimize it in the Photos section of the iCloud settings (Settings > iCloud > Photos)

  • Previews and Slideshows: a perennial question

    Hi all,
    I make slideshows in Aperture (and iMovie and iDVD) only once a year, and it seems like I have to re-learn it every time.  To all the people who claim that iMovie and iDVD are intuitive, I guess you and I are very different!
    But that's beside the point:  I know that, for Aperture slideshows to look good, previews have to be set to (at least) the resolution of the playing device.  And I know that that's spelled out (a little bit) in the Aperture manual in the Chapter 5 section on "Previews."
    My first question is a bit of a vent: why is there no discussion of preview quality in Chapter 20 on "Slideshows" (where it might be useful!)?
    And then my real question is: can I -- just before generating the slideshow -- simply "select all" of the versions I want in the slideshow, raise the quality on the previews in "Preferences" and then "Regenerate Previews"  -- and then generate the slideshow.   (And then go back to previews in Preferences and set it where it was?)
    Thank you!

    On the second page in the Slideshow chapter of the User Manual, this section is separated and highlighted:
    "About Displaying Sharp Images in Slideshows
    To display slideshows at the best quality, you should set Aperture to create high-resolution previews. In addition to setting previews to their highest resolution, you should also use full-size previews to prevent upscaling with large displays. If previews are not available, images in the slideshow may not be as sharp as they would be otherwise. For more information about creating high-resolution previews, see Working with Preview Images." (http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/#chapter=22%26section=2)
    The Previews page (linked in the original) is one of the most comprehensive of all the help pages.

  • I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

    I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

    These question marks are on your dock? And you can't open applications from your dock?
    If so, try this: Open a new finder window and navigate to the Applications folder in your hard disk. The applications in question should still be in there (the Applications folder). So drag each of the application icons that you want to be available on your dock from the Applications folder onto your dock, one by one. Take each of your question mark icons that are on the dock and drag them off the dock to get rid of them. See if that fixes you up.
    Now, if your hard disk no longer has an Applications folder in it, or the Applications folder is empty, you are going to have to reinstall OS 10.6 then do a software update to bring you back up to OS 10.6.8. You may be able to just go to the "optional installs" folder on the installer DVD and maybe all the stock applications are there -- I don't remember and I don't have an installer DVD handy to look. That would be way easier than doing a full blown OS reinstall. Also, as I recall, if OS 10.6 was on the computer when you bought it from the store, I think there should be an "extras" DVD that has a handful of applications that could be reinstalled from it, too.

  • This.each and a callback function

    Hi all
    I am having trouble working out how to get this to work. I have a $this.each function that gets all the relavent .attr('href') and I do a replace on it. All this works fine.
    When I do the replace is the item I want is not valid then I need it to stay the same else I get an error. Now to to this I am using function IsValidImageUrl(url). This works but because you cannot turn an asynchonous call into a synchronous one I need to make a callback.
    But here is my problem all the bits work but I cannot get the code to work together because I am using a this.each and the call back. with the validation and I am really stuck. The code is below it is in it bit as I have tried eveything and am just not getting it. Can someone help or point me in the right direction.
    Cheers Daniel
    $this.each(function  {
         var myItem = jQuery(this)
         var myLarge = myItem.attr("href");
         myZoom = myLarge.replace('lrg', 'zoom')
         myItem.attr("href",myZoom);
         myItem.attr("rev",myLarge);
    function myCallback(url, answer) {
              if (answer==false) {
              myItem.attr("href",myLarge);
              myItem.attr("rev",myLarge);
                                  } else {
              myItem.attr("href",myZoom);
              myItem.attr("rev",myLarge);
    function IsValidImageUrl(url, callback) {
        var img = new Image();
              alert(myZoom);
              img.onerror = function() { callback(url, false); }
        img.onload =  function() { callback(url, true); }
        img.src = url
    IsValidImageUrl(myZoom, myCallback);

    So you basically have large product layout and when you hover over the image there it does a zoom effect?
    If so then you can have a big image for your zoom and for your large image by default use _path in the image tag with thumbnail paramater in the URL to make a smaller version of it outlined in the BC documentation online.
    Many jQuery image zoom plugins will then work. Slight tweaks to that will work.
    If your doing it on the list view then same thing applies with the _path as a link source to fetch.

  • Curious question about Lightroom previews and Camera Raw Cache

    Posted in the Flickr Lightroom Group as well:
    I have noticed something about the Lightroom (3.6) previews and Camera Raw cache that have me puzzled.
    I create a brand new empty catalog and purge the Camera Raw Cache.
    Then I import ONE Nikon RAW (NEF) file with dimensions 2592 x 3872 (10 megapixels - 10,036,224 pixels).
    Next I export that NEF file to an uncompressed 8-bit TIFF file. You would expect the size of that TIFF file to be roughly 30 megabytes (10 megapixels x 3 bytes per RGB value) and in fact the TIFF file is 30,135,830 bytes in size. If you export the same TIFF file but specify ZIP compression the resulting file size is 10,834,038 bytes. Obviously the compression obtained here is going to be highly specific to the image but so far no surprises.
    During import I specify render 1:1 previews and I go into Loupe mode and view the entire image at 1:1 size. I also visit the develop module and do a bunch of manipulations on the image but no cropping.
    At the conclusion of all of that I exit from Lightroom and examine the size of the Camera Raw Cache folder as well as the Lightroom previews folder. It would be my expectation that the previews folder  should have a rendered full image and that the Camera Raw Cache should also have a rendered form of the raw data. What would you expect the size of those respective folders to be?
    In fact - in my trials the previews folder totals a mere 1,675,264 bytes and the Camera Raw Cache which contains one DAT file corresponding to the one cached image is merely 267,374 bytes. This does not seem like nearly enough bits to preserve the rendered image nor is there a full size image tucked away in the actual catalog either - that file is not large enough to contain that. And yet I can use Loupe mode at 1:1 size and move from image to image with no loading delays (even when importing multiple files).
    I'm wondering if I've missed something obvious in my analysis and if not, whether someone might care to speculate as to what magic Adobe is practicing here. Even if we grant them some special algorithm to compress their previews I don't see how they can achieve a compression so much greater than the ZIP-compressed TIFF file achieves.
    And for those that might think to ask - I've repeated these experiments with multiple raw images and on both the PC and MAC platforms.
    I look forward to some answers or interesting theories or perhaps someone might replicate the experiment and report findings.

    MadMan and Hal - thanks so much.
    So that was my D'Oh moment of what I was missing - the use of re-rendered JPGS as previews. That certainly does fit with the file sizes I am seeing. I had naively assumed that the previews might have tried to preserve the full fidelity of the image - But as you suggest that full fidelity is likely only there in the develop module.
    This perhaps explains another observation from the Develop module - moving from one image to another might display "Loading" either briefly or across a longer duration. My guess is that the length of the loading process might have to do more with what is cached in RAM than cached on disk in the camera raw cache. More of a shame then that 64-bit Lightroom on 64-Bit Windows cannot grab more RAM than it seems to do at present.

  • Lua Alchemy v0.1a Released

    Lua Alchemy is a port of the Lua programming language for
    ActionScript using Alchemy. Using v0.1a inside Flash/Flex you can
    create any ActionScript class available at runtime, call functions,
    get/set properties on ActionScript objects and use Lua functions as
    an ActionScript function (including event listeners).
    The project can be found here:
    http://code.google.com/p/lua-alchemy/
    A demo can be found here:
    http://www.arcanearcade.com/Flex/LuaAlchemyDemoV.1a/index.html
    The next version will include syntax sugar so instead of
    calling as3.call(var, "function", param) you could call
    var.function(param) and similar calls to make calling ActionScript
    code look the same as calling Lua code.

    Are you running on a 64bit mahcine (I see you are on linux).
    Maybe some platform dependence sneaks into the alchemy build.
    --Robert
    Yes I am running on a 64bit machine, but I'm not sure that is
    the
    root cause of the problem. For I've distilled the Lua
    double-to-int
    conversion down to:
    #include <stdio.h>
    union luai_Cast { double l_d; long l_l; };
    #define lua_number2int(i,d) \
    { volatile union luai_Cast u; u.l_d = (d) +
    6755399441055744.0; (i) = u.l_l; }
    int main(void) {
    double x = 123.456;
    int y;
    lua_number2int(y,x)
    printf("y = %d\n",y);
    and this standalone test works fine with Alchemy's gcc.
    Therefore the fact that
    the conversion approach fails in the full Lua case indicates
    the problem is
    more subtle that I'd first thought. Perhaps Joe, or someone
    else from Adobe,
    could shed light on what might be happening.

  • Aperture Reprocessing Images, Previews, and Thumbnails

    Came across a bug the otherday while working with metadata.  After attempting to use Metadata->Batch Change->Time Adjustment I noticed that after applying the adjustment the date/time on the images returned back to their original settings.  I thought it strange but simply switched over to Metadata->Adjust Date and Time  with the Also Change Original File option checked.  This seemed to work.
    But - then I began to notice also that the system was slowing.  Did a little checking and discovered that Aperture was processing thumbnails and previews in the background.  This should not have been happening for a couple reasons:
    1) I always allow previews and thumbs to complete follwing an import before doing anything else
    2) None of the images were being modified at the time (I was simply scrolling through libraries)
    I have spent a couple days on this now and could not find the culprit.  It goes something like this:
    Open Aperture - everything is fine
    Select a library and start looking through it and not soon after the activity window shows it building previews (and/or thumbnails) for the library I am in.
    Just tonight that got me thinking.  I opened Aperture
    I opened a library
    From the Inspector I went to the Info tab
    I selected the Aperture drop down
    Every time I view an image - the "Last Modified Date:" time stamp gets updated to the current date/time - even though I am not modifing the image in any way.
    I am guessing this is what reset by DTG values (paragraph 1) and why thumbnails and previews are being regenerated.
    I repaired permissions
    I repaired the library
    I rebuilt the database
    I deleted all previews and rebuilt them
    Permissions are R&W to the folder the library is in
    Permissions are R&W to the library itself
    What I cannot figure out is why Aperture is "Updating" every image I view.
    I was wondering - if anyone else had come across a similar issue.
    System Information
    Mac OSX dual 2.26Ghz Quad Core
    RAM 32GB
    DIsk Size 2TB / 845GB Free
    Dual monitor configuration
    Aperture v3.4.3
    Library Size: 10,189 images / 47GB
    Library Type: Managed
    Location: my home directory
    Faces Enabled (but turning it off has no affect)
    Post-Import Processing uses Camera Previews (but using Standard Previews has no affect)
    New projects automatically generate previews is OFF
    Share previews with iLife and iWork is NEVER
    Photo Preview is 1920x1920 (lower size has no affect)
    Photo Quality is 12 High (lower setting has no affect)
    Photo Stream is OFF (never been ON)

    Update
    So tonight I tore into the library contents itself and found that all of my images were quarantined with com.apple.quarantine.
    I switched to my laptop loaded aperture and viewed the demo library discovering that the masters there are not quarantined.  So, it appears that sandbox security flagged all my images for god only know why.
    I've spent the night manually removing quarantine from all my files.  The I deleted all the thumbnails and am rerunning thumbnail and preview generation.  I'm hoping this resolves the issue.
    But now the next question - why were the masters flagged in the first place?

    Yes - I'm sorry I should have come back in and closed the question. It was all being caused by a very simple and short Google+ code that was to display the Google+ logo. As soon as I removed it, the footer rendered correctly. Here is the offending code:
