Lumia 1020 Won't Recognize Headphones

I have a Lumia 1020 and a Nokia Purity Pro headset/headphones. Ever since I paired my 1020 to my Purity Pro, the headphone jack has stopped working, and the only way to listen to music has become my Purity Pros. Which is fine, except my car doesn't have Bluetooth, so I rely on an aux cable for music.
Anytime any type of headphone device is plugged into the 1/8" jack on the top of the phone, there is the solid 'pop' in the speakers, bu then nothing happens.
The 1020 just plays sound out of the speakers as if nothing were plugged in.
This is the 3rd Nokia Lumia I've had issues with the headphone jack. I'm not sure if it's a software issue or a hardware issue, but two of my previous 920s have had headphone jack issues.
Thankfully those both occurred within the first 25 days, so I was able to get AT&T to swap it for free. However, my 1020 is now almost 3 months old, and AT&T wants a 199$ deductible to do anything about it.
Does Nokia offer any type of support for these issues? Searching the internet gives mixed messages of horror stories of people sending in their devices only to never see them again or have them immediately returned, or wonderful stories of Nokia sending a new device before they even receive the defective one.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi d_savov,
Welcome to the forum!
Is this for a Lumia 1020 as well? Have you tried using your headset with other phones if possible? This will help verify if your headset is working fine. Have you also checked if there's something stuck in the phone's headset port that might cause the issue? Your headset is a Nokia WH-208, right?
BTW, are you getting the same audio quality with the music or calls when the sound is received via loudspeaker? Also, when you say 'the phone isn't recognizing your voice', does it happen when using both the headset and the phone's mic?
Try to verify if the phone's software is updated by going to Settings > Phone update. Try also to check if the system apps are up-to-date by scanning the QR codes shown at this link, especially the ones for Accessories and Audio: Nokia Windows Phone 8 App Updates. You may also reboot the phone by simultaneously pressing and holding the volume down & power keys until it vibrates and restarts.
We'll wait for your feedback.

  • My DINC 2 Won't recognize headphones! Help!!

Hi, my droid incredible 2 has worked in the past, but now, I try to plug in headphone to listen to music, and the music plays out of the phone's speaker. I've tried three different pairs of headphones, and I've attempted to clean out the headphone jack as best as I could. It still will not connect at all! Please help!

        Hi elawson081,
I use my headphones too, so I understand how important they are! Let's see if we can get this figured out for you! Are you able to use the phone for voice calls, without using the headphones or the speaker going on? Do you notice if you downloaded anything right before this happened? Please put the phone in safe mode and then re-test. Safe mode tests to see if an application is causing the issue. Here are the steps:
    http://bit.ly/QwfKHi
Please also make sure that no debris is in the headset jack on the phone, just to see if that is the problem. Additionally, make sure you feel (and hear)the clicking noise when attaching the headphones to the phone.
Please let me know the results. Thanks!

  • Brand new macbook pro won't recognize headphones?!?!

    Howdy y'all
just got this Macbook pro 13" less than a week ago... I was getting ready to record a song, plug in my headphones... the sound continues to play through the internal speakers... this is SO frustrating.
this macbook pro replaced an ol 15" black macbook which had problems with the headphone jack also (red light coming out of the port)
someone please tell me how to fix this. i've tried several of the "fixes" seen on this board, nothing worked. doesn't even show when i pull up system preferences.
    Apple, this is seriously unacceptable
what are we paying 1,500$ for?!?!?!?

Have you tested to determine if the headphones are functional?
Since you got the MBP less than a week ago, have Apple check out your problem and fix it or exchange for another new one, or if you are totally dissatisfied, a refund.
    Ciao.

  • My Lumia 1020 won't let me post photo onto Faceboo...

Hi,  I am trying to upload a photo onto a page that I am admin on and I don't seem to be able to do it.  It allows me to add a post but not a photo from the phone.  Any suggestions?

@acoj Uploading pictures via the phone's browser is going to be a great feature. We suggest sharing that idea to: https://wwww.windowsphone.uservoice.com. About your concern, are you getting any error message when uploading pictures using the Facebook app? If those pictures are taken via Nokia Camera app with a high resolution (38MP or 34MP), it can't be shared. We can only share pictures if they are taken with a low resolution (5MP).

  • I have a 2nd or 3rd generation iPod touch. Recently, it doesn't recognize headphones and will only play music through it's speakers. I've tried cleaning the area where you plug in the headphones but this has not helped. What should I do?

My ipod touch (2nd or 3rd generation) won't recognize headphones anymore! I have'nt gotten it wet or dropped it. I've tried cleaning out the plug where you plug the headphones in. I've had no luck. Is this fixable or is it time to trash this iPod?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If not under warranty Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.
    Apple - iPod Repair price
A third-party place like the following will replace the jack for less. Google for more.
iPhone Repair, Service & Parts: iPod Touch, iPad, MacBook Pro Screens
    Replace the jack yourself
    iPod Touch Repair – iFixit
It i likely not worth getting it fixed if a bad headphone jack

  • Lumia 1020 cannot undo headphones mode

    Dear all,
My Lumia 1020 suddenly cannot do the headphones mode after I've plugged in a headphone. I've already done a hardware reset numerous times but I cannot seem to overcome that issue.
Does anybody have encountered such issues and if so, any solutions to overcome? I'm already at wits end on this.
    All suggestions are most welcome.
    Thank you, Melvin

Hi, melvinang. Have you tried connecting another compatible headphone on your phone to see if it will work? If so, you may try using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. The link is applicable regardless of your location. We look forward to your reply.
Hello, ekstamC. Doing that steps might damage the hardware. It may also invalidate the phone's warranty. You may try my suggestion above and then check it again. Let us know the outcome.

  • HELP - My new Nokia Lumia 620 won't boot up, even ...

I'm worried my Nokia Lumia 620 is a lemon, and the Care Centre will just keep taking it in for repair.  The reliability so far has been disappointing, especially as I was giving Nokia a try after a 10 year break, and also trying out Windows Mobile / Phone after a 6 year break.  I want to recommend it - I'm continually being asked by friends and colleagues what I think of my new phone.   Nokia will be smart to just replace it.
The details: my Nokia Lumia 620 won't boot up today (again).  It hung on boot  this morning with the Nokia Logo.  That was over 2 hours ago.  It had this problem during February, and I returned it twice for repair to the local Nokia Care Centre.  I guess I'll take it in again later today, but it just feels like a lemon handset so far.
    Timeline:
Handset purchased in local Nokia Store on Jan 29 2013 ( 7 weeks ago)
Handset gave "Exclamation-Mark-Screen-of-Death" on Feb 19 2013 (3 weeks old handset)
Local Nokia Store sent me to local Nokia Care Centre, handed in overnight "for repair"
Phone returned on Feb-20-2013 after software refresh.
Worked fine for 1 week.   Problem returned Feb 26 2013. (4 week old handset)
Nokia Care Centre "replaced motherboard" on Feb 27 2013.
Has worked fine for 3 weeks.   Now Lumia 620 won't boot this morning - no Exclamation Mark, instead it's the Nokia Logo on boot.
The handset is 7 weeks old.
Hard reset (side-button-combination) hasn't worked either.
Any advice on getting this working, repaired or replaced?

Update on the repair - it didn't work.   I returned the phone to the Yau Ma Tei Nokia Care Centre on March 20th, and was given what was termed a 'replacement' phone.   I was pretty happy.  All was well.  But two days later when I tried to make a phone call using my headphones, I noticed that only the left audio channel was working through the earphones.   I tried a second pair of earphones and the same problem.    The audio was only working through the left channel.  On a new phone.  How strange.
So was it really new?   My suspicion is that the repair centre has used old returned parts (parts they perhaps term as refurbished) - so in fact my replacement phone is my old phone assembled with old and refurbished parts.   Was it in fact a refurbished phone assembled from refurbished parts?   Frustrating when they tell me it's a replacement phone.
That was back in late March.  I posted a couple of tweets and Nokia responded.  They even phoned me to try and help.  However no offer of a new phone.  All they suggested was that I revisit the Nokia Service Centre.   For a 4th time.
That was about 6 weeks ago, and I simply haven't made the time to go to the Service Centre again.   It's hard to find the time when my last 3 visits have been so unsuccessful.
Sometimes you just get a lemon.   It happened to me once before with a different manufacturer when I was on a contract and had to live with a phone for 2 years that kept cutting out during calls.   Same problem - the manufacturer attempted to repair it, but it just never worked properly.   That was 10 years ago.  Now it's happening with my new Nokia.  Luckily I'm not on contract this time.  I've read good reviews for the Lumia 620, and overall it's a pretty decent handset in every other way.
But the issues this particular handset has been plagued with has overshadowed any positive feelings I have been having.   I'll probably be cutting my losses and changing handsets in the summer.

  • IMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?

iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?  Got a brand new iMac and purchased external speakers for same.  Hooked them into external speaker jack and the computer does not recognize the external speaker jack.  I then plugged them into the external head phone jack and the computer recognized the head phone jack.  How can I get the computer to recognize the speaker jack?

Thanks "a brody," my mistake, I was mistaking the "audio in" jack for a speaker output jack.  I have some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers with a built in amplifier that I am using and they sound beautiful.  I do have them plugged into the correct jack, but was thinking there was a speaker out put and headphone out put.
Thanks again for correcting me, I feel much better now that I know my brand new iMac isn't defective, lol.

  • My Nokia Lumia 1020 camera not working anymore

I bought this my Nokia Lumia 1020 with so much excitement, and it arrived on Saturday...got to it on Sunday night and dived in to the camera...amazing! I said... Just this evening wanted to take an interesting night composition, pressed the camera button...instead of it to come on, was greeted with a humming sound.... Of sort... The app wouldn't open, tot it was d app with the problem...den turned on my flashlight app, but also greeted the d strange sound...also the light won't come on... I am really disappointed and getting forstrated by Nokia...
    what can I do?

    Hello, victovic2000.
Thank you for posting and welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions.
Sorry for the inconvenience it is causing you. By the way, how was the phone now? Is it still doing the same thing? Is it happening to the default camera only or same with the other camera app? Did something happen to your phone prior to the issue? Is your phone's software up-to-date?
You may check if there's an available software update for your phone by going to Settings > Phone updates. Note that a stable internet connection is needed. We encourage you to use Wi-Fi instead. You may also consider doing a 'full reset' by going to Settings > About > Reset your phone. Make sure to backup your files to avoid data loss. • Ipod shows folder with exclamation point and computer won't recognize

My ipod resets itself each time that I try to turn it on, and then flashes the folder with the exclamation point. I have tried to restore it and update software but the computer won't recognize it. A few days before it broke the ipod would skip through some songs that it was unable to play for some reason, and now it makes a clicking sound when trying to start up. Did it die, or is there a way to fix this?

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery replacement (with pictures)
    http://www.kokopellimusic.us/KM_instructions.htm
Have I tried this myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I just bought the Nokia Purity HD on ear headphones (WH 930) and the in line volume and playback controls don't work with my Lumia 1020. Was I wrong in assuming that they would be compatible?

i would assume that they would work too. i have WH-920 and all the controls work fine with my Lumia 1020. have you checked that you are up to date with the latest firmware for your device and that you are up to date with the latest nokia system app updates frmo the Store? also try performing a soft reset.

  • Nokia Lumia 1020

Hi, I have just converted to Nokia Lumia from iPhone4s this year.
I did this all because of he Lumia 1020 and I am not turning back.
I love my 1020 and I have been searching the web and updating it as frequently as possible.
The Lumia 1020 is already One year old and there are rumours that Microsoft is begining to stop production. I guess that's the life of every electronics nowadays.
However, I hope the Microsoft and the Nokia Research team will continue to produce softwares for the Lumia series including the 1020. Since it is the only 41mp camera phone (apart from the 808).
Please don't let it die so early.
I was using many Nokia phones in the past. I switched to the iPhones after the N80. I am glad I am attracted back to using a Nokia again.
    a Nokia fan

While the 1020 will no longer be made/sold it runs an OS which is still very much supported and according to microsoft they will support an OS release for at least 18 months. We're currently (just) on release 8.1 and that would mean that support will be there for quite a while still. It may be that the 1020 won't be seeing an update to the next firmware level but that should not really matter much as even cyan has relatively little impact on the phona and most of the good stuff is in the OS itself.
