MA700LL/A screen flickering prior to screensaver starting

When my macbook goes into low power mode, (the screen dims prior to the screensaver starting) the screen itself starts to flicker.  Almost as if it is unable to make the transition from the full light display to the lower lit display.  any suggestions.  As an FYI the book is a friends and he just got it for 350.  Im thinking it is grafic card related but not too sure.  Not looking to invest a lot of time or money more just curious as I have never encountered this and I have the same book.  The OS is 10.7... not sure which one, to lazy to look and it has 3gb of ram.  everything else is factory.

Hi, I would like to bump this question up as I am having the EXACT same issue and I can't find an answer to this.
Not sure if it is relevant but when this issue started about a week ago I have also started to have some other issues arising - eg the mouse cursor would freeze on an application and permanently 'pick it up' so that every move of the mouse would move the application window around the screen. Alternatively the whole machine would freeze.
Cheers

  • How can I disable the screen dimmer as the screensaver starts?

I want to see my screensaver pictures but the OS dims the screen so much I can't really see it. I turned off the "dim before sleep" settings in the system preferences, but that must be a different setting. The screen still dims within just a few minutes of not touching the computer after the screensaver starts.

It's one of those annoying bugs that seems to still be around.
Happens in 10.3 and 10.4 too on some Macs.
I just learned to ignore it because it's still happening on some of my Macs as well.

  • Screensaver starts while its already running

Okay heres the situation, when I need to lock my macbook because I'm leaving or whatever I like to set the screensaver to start because It looks nice and it has the password protection screen, What I did to start it up from a hotkey is have Quicksilver startup the .app in the frameworks at cmd+L, but in my screensaver settings the screensaver is setup to start at 5 minutes inactivity, what happens is that when i start up the screen saver from the hotkey, after 5 minutes the screensaver starts again and they both keep flickering trying to get on top of each other, Can I keep both settings but make it so that the screensaver knows its already started and thus won't start again, This might be a bug or something with leopard

I sort of figured out a better way to phrase this, whats the best way to invoke the screensaver from quicksilver?

  • MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

    Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
    What happens is this:
    1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
    2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
    3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
    4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!

  • TS3232 I have the mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter firmware 1.03 and I still have screen flickering issues

I have the mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter firmware 1.03 and I still have massive screen flickering issues on a Mac Mini 2012.
I am using a Dell 30" monitor (it's the Samsung screen just rebranded) connected to a WD 4TB Thunderbolt drive connected to the Mac Mini.
The screen is usable for the most part when I've just started the computer (although today I started having issues after a fresh restart) but if even just the screen goes to sleep, or the computer goes to sleep and I wake it later, I start to have massive flickering to black and occasionally to snow.
The effect seems to be more likely to arise when I'm on heavy graphics-intensive websites or programs (eg, Tumblr feed with lots of GIF images or working in Adobe Premiere), but once it starts shutting down those programs has no effect, the screen keeps flickering wildly.
The problem improved after the 1.03 firmware upgrade (for a while it was flickering uncontrollably ALL the time and was virtually unusable) but it has not gone away.
Any suggestions would be very welcome, either for how to fix this issue or how to get Apple to, you know, let me TELL THEM that their adapter firmware fix has NOT solved the issue, since my phone support has expired. :/

I have a new Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to allow my original Apple 30" Cinema Display to connect to the new Mac Pro.  Shipped straight from Apple, it is firmware version 1.03.  I've never had flickering issues, but the display will often go black (possibly after a screen power save) and not come back.  when this happens I am still able to connect to and use the Mac via remote connection.  But the only way to get the screen back is either to unplug the adapter and plug it back in to the Mac, or to shut down and power up the Mac.  This may be a separate issue, so I'll also post it standalone...

  • [solved] after kernel upgrade screen flickering in gdm

    Hi,
after the recent kernel-upgrade to 4.0.1-1-ARCH i have an ugly behavior. The bottom half of my screen flickers while on gdm. After login to gnome everything is normal and I have no problems. But in gdm the screen is flickering which is really annoying. I never had this behavior before. My laptop has such an hybrid graphics stack with intel and ati. Here are some logfiles but I cant find anything suspicious. Has anyone any idea what could be the cause of this behavior or which logfile to log into?
    greetings

It happens to me as well but in xfce4 or openbox rather than on a display manager because I start X from `~/.bash_profile` upon login on tty1. If I logout and login again the problem goes away until I restart the system again.
EDIT: Upgrading to linux 4.0.5-1 did not solve the issue.

  • When I open Mail the screen flickers random blue and gray appeared on the screen. I took a video too. Will that happen again? Is it hardware problem? This ipad2 32GB was replaced yesterday and I think it is refurbished. Are replace product refurbished?

I got my ipad2 replaced yesterday. And this new ipad started giving me problem by crashing aps. Then I restored the ipad twice but the problem was still there. I called apple and they fixed it by doing Reset All Settings. But now I have this weird problem. When I open Mail the screen flickers random blue and gray appeared on the screen. I took a video too. Will that happen again? Is it hardware problem? This ipad2 32GB was replaced yesterday and I think it is refurbished. Are replace product refurbished?

There is no way for anyone here to know if your replacement iPad is a refurbished unit.  Per Apple's replacement policy, replacements can be refurbished units.  If you feel the unit is not working correctly, take it back, let them check it out and if found defective, they will replace that unit.

  • IMac 21" late 09: Slow, screen flickering/tearing and odd behavior - the problem that puzzles everyone

    PLEASE HELP!
My iMac 21" late -09, started acting a bit wierd a year ago. Things got worse rapidly, it got slower, the screen flickers/tears (see link below), short moments of lost internet connection, lost connection whit the keyboard (might be keyboard that is broken), almost overheats when gaming and odd behavior on some webbsites whit galleries and/or videos.
Let's begin whit the screen: it's not vertikal lines or major distortions, just a subtle horisontal line that "wanders" from bottom to topp and some lagging from time to time. Looks like this: http://cl.ly/3i2W2o3S1D2T
The wierd thing is that hi-res does not mean more "tearing". Yes the lagg and risk of tearing increases, but the connection seems to be: lots of movement=tearing. So a pixeld 240p video of people dancing can be way worse than a news debbate in1080p!?!
Lost connection whit internet and keyboard rarely happens and is probably due to something else, but thought that was good to have in mind.
Odd behavior: galleries ex: when browsing images on Facebook in fullscreen, the image sometimes jumps around in the beginning and when clicking on next the same picture might appear again or just nothing at all. When scrolling down overwiewing a gallery, the updating stops and you can't scroll down further. This problem appers mainly on FB, deviantart also acts a bit wierd but there is often small issues whit image sites. Doesn't help to switch browsers either!
Videos: Youtube is horrible to use, stops loading, dosen't start loading, erases everything loaded (grey bar disapears and reloads), refuse to switch ressolution and suddenly stops the video like it was done! "ehh.. wasn't this 2min long? Not anymore, now its 34sec!". Mainly a Youtube problem but many similar sites can be a bit problematic to use.
NO, it's not the HTML-5 problem or any standard flash issue and using a different browser dosen't help!
Worst is the fact that most of these errors are not constant! One day your watching youtube or mabey a movie in VLC, a bit laggy, but almost no problem. Next day **** brakes lose and after 2hours of struggling you are ready to stabb yourself in the face!
What i tried: Most easy buggfixes that might cause the above problems, updating most things, Switched from OS X SL to OS X ML, complete reinstall and some things i probably forgot by now. Then went to MacStore for repair, they didn't find anything wrong and said it worked fine after the standard diagnostic/repair program!?! Went home and everything was the same! Went a second time to MacStore, same result.
So I'v reinstalled a few times and it seems to improve the Mac. But 2-3weeks later every error is back, even if I barely installed or downloaded anything!?!
Any idea what this could be? Or is the graphic card broken and MacStore has a blind, inbred muppet as a technician?

No I didn't. The first time i explained the problem thoroughly and thought that they just couldn't miss such a visual error. I was wrong. The second time the technician wasn't there so i showed the above clip to the salesstaff and explained everything onceagain. Later the technician called me and we talked for 10min.
Btw, the problems always "manifests themselves", just varies between strenght and frequence.
But all other issues aside, what could cause the tearing of the screen as seen int the above clip?

  • IPod Nano 4th gen - screen flickers, won't turn on, isn't recognised by computer or iTunes.

My 4th gen iPod Nano has been playing up.
When I connect it to my computer or a dock, the screen flickers with the Apple logo. Once unplugged, it won't turn back on and the screen goes completely black. I tried to reset it numerous times (both connected and unplugged) but that didn't help at all.
I tried to see if I could fix it by restoring it and putting it in disk mode, but the iPod isn't recognise by any of the computers in my house and doesn't appear in either iTunes or 'My Computer' so that really doesn't help. I'm positive it's not an issue with my computer or USB cable because the other iPods in my house connect just fine.
Any idea on how to fix this?

If you have synced your iPod touch to a computer, it should be relatively easy to fix.  Plug the iPod into the computer to which it is synced.  Once plugged in, hold the home (square button on front) and the power button on the top for approximately 10-15 seconds.  After the apple disappears from your screen a couple times, a new screen will popup indicating to start iTunes on your computer.  Once you start iTunes, you will be given the option to begin the restore mode and then choose to restore your particular iPod.  Once again, you have to had synced your iPod to a computer to utilize this option.  Not sure how I figured it out, but I finally did!  Good luck and let me know if it does/doesn't work for you.

  • Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series + open source driver = screen flickers

Hello, this is my first post here. I just finished setting up my first arch installation on my laptop and I'm using Xorg + gnome 3 as user interface.
My laptop has two VGA cards, an integrated intel VGA card and a Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series, so I used vgaswitcheroo to switch to the Mobility Radeon and turned off the intel VGA card.
Now, here's the problem: I want 3d acceleration to play games and such, but the opensource radeon driver is being weird.
Basically, if I use my Mobility Radeon and the opensource driver the lower-center part of the screen flickers when i move windows vertically. It flickers to black in a polygon-like area and the window shadows get all messed up. If i try to start a game that uses 3d acceleration (such as nexuiz) it runs extremely slow (way too slow for this VGA card) and flickers like crazy in the same area and sometimes on the entire screen.
I already tried using the proprietary driver (catalyst) but it doesn't seem to support switchable VGA cards, since it gives me memory segmentation error.
However, if I switch back to the Intel VGA card and use the opensource intel driver, it runs just fine with no flickering and nexuiz runs better (but of course not fast enough since the intel VGA card is crappy)
As you can see here, 3D acceleration seems to be enabled and Xorg doesn't seem to give any major error or warning:

  • Screen flickering in windows 8 and 8.1

Recently I've started to have this problem in both windows 8 and 8.1, where the screen flickers and lines and other oddities dance across the screen. It seems to happen much more in windows 8.1 than in windows 8, but it does still happen in windows 8. It seems to have started when I upgraded the OS X side of my laptop to Mavericks. The odd thing is that it doesn't exhibit the problem on the main display or a newly attached external display when at all when I plug the computer into an external display with hdmi. This makes me think that it might be some sort of a driver issue, but I am not really sure. Here is a video showing the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ICiCFfWv8I If anyone has any ideas about how I might be able to fix this issue, or if I need to have the laptop repaired/replaced, that would be extremely helpful!
    Thanks!

    @pwabrahams ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums. If each driver is the same file name and same date but have different file sizes.  What you will want to do is to download each one and save it to an external memory device.
Once you have the drivers downloaded boot your system into safe mode.
    Windows 8 Safe Mode
Now in safe mode uninstall the driver for your video.
When the driver is removed boot back into windows normally and install the driver.
Try all three drivers.  If all have the same issue you will need to do a repair.  For that you will need to contact HP phone support.

  • Screen flickering problem

Hey all. Recently, everytime I plug in or unplug a firewire cable (and as of today, USB cables), my screen flickers a bit. Sometimes it flickers for about a minute after the device is idle, then it's fine. It's a very faint flicker, it's as if the brightness is being randomly played with. Could something be loose on the logic board that I should begin to worry about? Please help!

    Hi Captain_zoobi1
Welcome to the HP Support Community! I see that your screen is flickering when you do a number of different actions. I will be happy to help you with that. Let me start by getting your product number so I know what we are working with. If you connected it to an external monitor does the flickering still happen?

  • Just upgraded to OSX mavericks on macbook pro mid 2011 version. Having a big issue here that whenever my mac comes back from sleep, i.e after I open the lid, the screen flickers and there is an error of Finder not opening properly. Any fix to this?

Just upgraded to OSX 10.9 mavericks on macbook pro mid 2011 version. Having a big issue here that whenever my mac comes back from sleep, i.e after I open the lid, the screen flickers and there is an error of Finder not opening properly. Any fix to this?

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Screen flickers and photoshop becomes slow

    Hi,
I have been using photoshop for quite a while now and have never faced any issues until now. I upgraded from windows 7/64 bit to windows 8.1/64 bit and the problems have started. When I turn on the ruler view my ruler flickers and also the photoshop becomes slow. If I hold the spacebar(hand tool) and want to move to some area it's not smooth. When the ruler view is turned off it's all fine but as a web designer I can't do without the ruler. Earlier I had the whole screen flickering issues but I did some search on the internet and have tuned the drawing board to basic and that has solved the issue but not the ruler flickering issue. BTW I am using Photoshop CC. I am unable to work on it and I need some help please help me guys.

  • CPU Hitting 100% +Screen flickering/Flashing

Hi folks, i wanted some help with a problem i started having recently!
My processor seems to be hitting 100% for about 5secs or until that precise folder with .mp4 files fully loads up (when i access .mp4 files), but when i convert them, the screen just flashes/Flickers, until conversion finishes.
I installed Need for speed undercover on my laptop 2months back, ive played it, and now i try to play it the screen flickers once, twice, and it minimises soon as i start to play the game, when i click on the tab again it'll come up for about a minute of my gaming time, and then same problem again it loads up fine, only at times when it loads up this happens, but most the time it's when i start playing the game, due to that i cant exactly play that game no more, until i get this problem fixed.
The system remains quiet but the processor hits 100% and then the problem starts.
    what could the problem be???
i would be grateful for any help given.
    Thanks

I rang up Toshiba, and it turned out to be the graphics chip problem.
This model had this problem because the bios settings were not correctly set therefore causing the computer a lot of strain.
Laptops with this problem have an extra year of warranty.
Anyhow problem is now sorted; they had to change the motherboard to sort the whole problem out because the chip is soldered onto it.
    Thanks
