MAC addresses ofVirtual switches

I have the following lab environment:
1 server win2k12 r2 with hyper-v ( physical box )
1 server win2k12 dc ( virtual )
1 workstation win8 ( virtual )
I assigned the ip address 192.168.1.5 to the win8 machine and everything is okay and I am able to reach the internet.
I deleted the netwerk card and the added a new network card to the win8 machine.
I assigned the same IP address to it.
However, the computer is unreachable now.
If I recreate the virtual switch everything if okay.
I think it has something to do with the MAC address table of the virtual switch.
I think that it is linking the 192.168.1.5 IP to the old MAC address of the netwerk card before I deleted it.
How can I delete this cache and is there a way to read this cache?
Your help would be much appreciated.
Andre

What does this mean? "However, the computer is unreachable now."
What do you see if you issue ipconfog /all?
Have you physical connectivity?
Can you ping by IP and by name?
What is configuration of your networkm, namely the client (is you client member of domain)?
Fro my question you can see that what is clear to you need not be clear to readers. Better description of system and its response and error loga may iincrease the convergence to functional sysstem.
Regards
Milos
BTW: What you want to achieve by removing NIC?
Sorry for not being complete in my question.
The IP settings are just fine as they were before and I am a 100% certain that they are correct. However if I use the same IP address as used on the previous NIC ( which I deleted ) then I just can't access ( not even a ping, no it is not an issue with the
firewall ) anything not even the hypervisor. If I use another IP in the same range then everything is working correctly ( can ping the hypervisor and access the internet for example ). I can't explain it and I don't have the lab environment set up anymore
so I am unable to provide you with statistics. I hoped that I was over seeing something and you could point it out to me with the litle information provided.
So in short what I did.
1- create a vm and a add a nic and link it to an external switch
2- ping the hypervisor from the vm
3- Delete the nic from the vm
4- Add a nic
5- Configure the identical settings ( ip, subnet, gateway etc )
6- Unable to ping the hypervisor.

  • Discovering MAC addresses for Switch ports

Hello and thanks for looking at my question,
My company has inherited a network which has some very poor documentation. We really have no clue, nor does the customer, what machines are connected to what switch ports.
My co-worker and I were discussing the best way to find this out with the least amount of effort, but can't agree on a single solution. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Sincerely,
    Brent

    Brent,
After you do the 'sho arp' and now have MAC to IP translation, do a 'sho mac-address table' to show MAC to port translation. Save both tables to an Excel spreadsheet and tie them together. You should be able to come up with a good cross reference table (depending upon your Excel skills).
This also gives you a switch-by-switch breakout. It's also a very helpful troubleshooting method to find rouge devices and shut down a port (for instance).
    Hope this is helpful.

  • SNMP How to get number of learned MAC addresses on Switch interface

There is nice c2900PortNumberOfLearnedAddresses table in C2900-MIB, but it's outdated and not supported by modern switches.
Is there similar table for modern switches? Most interested in Catalyst 2960 and 3750.
Fetching whole forwarding table is not a good idea.

Following guide should help you with this:

  • SG300 inter-VLAN routing and MAC address changes in incoming packets

    Hello
    I have SG300-20 working in Layer3 mode
    VLAN1 is not used
    Internet gateway is in VLAN211
    Clients are in other VLANs
Switch is default gateway for clients and itself has internet gateway as default route.
MAC address of switch is XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:63
When client sends trafic to Internet destination MAC address in outgoing packets is XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:63
But in incoming packets source MAC address is XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:69
Why does it change? And how can I setup switch to use only XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:63 MAC address?

    Hi Robert,
I'd like to pick up this old thread because we have a huge problem with the behavior of the SG300 router/switch regarding the "spoofed" MAC source addresses. We have connected this switch to another router which has some special routing capabilities. It routes certain IP packets directly to MAC addresses which it learned from snooping on special traffic.
When connected to a SG300 router with an Ethernet base address of XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:48 we receive packets with Ethernet source addresses like e. g. XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:49 or XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:4D (depending on which hardware port they came from). Our special router "learns" these MAC addresses and tries to send associated outgoing packets directly to these addresses using e. g. XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:49 as the MAC destination address.
Our problem is that the SG300 does not forward the packet if the MAC destination address is not equal to the switch's Ethernet base address (XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:48 in our case). This renders the SG300 series useless for our systems.
Is there new firmware available which fixes this problem for us? We don't care which MAC source address the SG300 uses in incoming packets we receive, but we expect that the SG300 handles packets correctly for outgoing packets we send with this MAC address as the destination address.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • AP 2700 - 2 MAC addresses - problem with joining to the WLC

    Hi,
I had a problem with joining my new AP 2700 to the controller. I've found workaround but I would like to ask you if you know if this behavior is a some kind of bug or maybe feature :)
I have DHCP server which assigns IP address base on the binding MAC address with the IP address. Without binding, IP won't be assigned so I added MAC address from the AP sticker (MAC and SN number is on the sticker at the back of each AP) to the DHCP, connected AP to the switch port which was configured exactly the same way like other ports on this switch where older AP are working fine and.... nothing. IP address was not assigned. There was no DHCP request in the DHCP server logs.
During the investigation I've found that AP present 2 MAC addresses on the switch interface:
    switch#sh mac address-table interface fa1/1
    Mac Address Table
    Vlan Mac Address Type Ports
    11 58f3.54c1.2cb3 DYNAMIC Fa1/1
    11 58f3.54c1.2cb4 DYNAMIC Fa1/1
The first one (58f3.54c1.2cb3) is a "sticker" MAC address but the second one (58f3.54c1.2cb4) is something new. Looking in to the DHCP logs I've found log that this second MAC address (58f3.54c1.2cb4) tried to get IP address but it was not possible because this MAC was not binding with any IP address so DHCP server refuse. I added this second MAC (58f3.54c1.2cb4) to the DHCP server, AP get IP address, join to the WLC, download software, reboot and ... this MAC address disappear.
    switch#sh mac address-table interface fa1/1
    Mac Address Table
    Vlan Mac Address Type Ports
    11 58f3.54c1.2cb3 DYNAMIC Fa1/1
Software I had on the AP before joining to the WLC was:
    Version :
Cisco IOS Software, C2700 Software (AP3G2-RCVK9W8-M), Version 15.2(4)JB5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

  • Router MAC Addresses

    Hello all.
Is it correct that routers don't have a base Ethernet MAC address (but switches have) and the only MACs that routers have are the BIAs in the interfaces?

    Hello Collin.
Depends. Are you talking for something like spanning tree or for something like HSRP/VRRP? Generally speaking in STP, a switch has a base MAC (chassis's use the Sup MAC, stackables typically use use lowest interface -1).
Is the base MAC used for STP different from the one used in HSRP? I'm actually referring to the base MAC shown in the output of sh version on a switch. I just noticed that routers don't have a base MAC in the output of sh version.

  • Switch learning mac addresses

In a video that I watched a few days ago someone explained a basic process of booting up a switch and how a switch learns mac addresses. He said something that I would like to discuss. I know... it is not important but want to clarify :)
    PC1---SW1----PC2
PC1 wants to send sth to PC2. In the video it was said:
'a frame arrives at SW1 and SW1 learns the mac address of pc1 but it does not know the mac address of pc2 so it will flood this frame to all ports'
My uderstanding is that it all starts with an arp message: pc1 does not know the mac address and sends an arp and it will allow the switch to learn both mac addresses: pc1 and pc2. I am too lazy to do it in wireshark but did that in PT and that's what I saw as well. After the arp - switch learnt both macs and did not flood the frame.
Am I correct? I know it is not important but... ;-)

It may be possible that there was some aspect of the switch environment in the video that would change the behavior (perhaps something like a long timer for the ARP cache in the PC and a short MAC ageing timer on the switch). But in general you are correct. PC1 would send an ARP request as a broadcast, the switch would learn the MAC of PC1 and forward the ARP request. When PC2 sends its response to the ARP request the switch would learn the MAC of PC2 and forward the ARP response. So the switch should have both MAC addresses when data traffic begins to flow.

  • Detemining MAC addresses on WS-C2950G switches

On my old WS-C3500XL switches (running IOS ver 12.0(5)WC5(fc1), I could input the following IOS command and figure out the MAC address of hosts that are connected to any switch port interface (int fa0/1 in the example below):
    3500xl# show mac int fa0/1
    Non-static Address Table:
Destination Address Address Type VLAN Destination Port
    0800.20a4.eefe Dynamic 6 FastEthernet0/1
I work in the aerospace industry and this was very useful for me to verify hosts were connected to the correct switch port (especially in remote locations). It also allowed me to verify more easily find out if someone who shouldn't be connected to the net is (i.e. a user that might disconnect a Sun host to put his PC on the net).
On my newer WS-C2950G Catalyst 2950 switches running IOS ver 12.1(22)EA1b(fc1), it no longer supports this same IOS command. Is there another command I can use to get this info?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
You can achieve the same with the following command
    sh mac-address-table interface
    eg
    2950#sh mac-address-table interface fa 0/1
    Non-static Address Table:
Destination Address Address Type VLAN Destination Port
    0015.2bd7.1821 Dynamic 25 FastEthernet0/1

  • How to find which port on the switch that it connected with Mac address?

    Hi,
I am trying to find which port of the switches it connected to thru mac-address?
I am able to get the mac-address from the ip address when i do
"show ip dhcp binding snooping" at the core switch.
But when I move on to the Edge switch to check which PC with this Mac address connected to the port,i returned with no result.(onli trunk port result)
I use sh ip arp | inc 000d.60cb.445d
but didn't give me which port it connected to.
    How to solve this problem?
    thanks!
    KL

    Hi KL,
If you are already on the edge switch you can run a command "sh mac-address-table address " and it will give you the port number.
Incase you get a port which is a trunk port that means the end device does not exist on this switch and exist on some downstream switch. So you can just find out the ip address of the downstream switch with "sh cdp neigh detail" command and connect to that downstream switch and then again issue the command "sh mac-address-table address " and check the port number and follow the above steps till the time you get the switch on whcih end host is connected.
HTH, if yes please rate the post.

  • PC22224 switch fails on boot with message "Invalid switch MAC address"

Ok moderators, I know this is a nonsupported product, but you moved all Switch messages to the archive.  This seemed to be the most appropriate folder for it.  Hope that's ok?
I have a NEW (can you believe it?) PC22224 managed Cisco/Linksys switch with a problem.  When it boots, it passes all tests until it is almost ready to run, then I get this message:
    Checking file integrity..... Done
    Decompressing Code Image.... Done
    System PANIC.....
    Invalid switch MAC address
Does anyone know how to correct this problem?  I can find nothing on it anywhere on the web.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Nexus 3064 switch: Can't get MAC addresses through SNMP

    Hello Everyone!
I'm seeing an issue in our Nexus 3064 switch where we can't get the MAC address table using SNMP. At the same time, I can see MAC addresses of all the ports from the switch command line (show mac address-table). I've verified that SNMP is enabled and I can fetch other switch information (such as VLANs) using SNMP.
I did an SNMP walk to get the mac (
    snmpwalk -v2c -c <communityString>@<VlanID> <ManagementIP> 1.3.6.1.2.1.17.4.3.1), and it didnt return anything.
Could any of you please let me know what can be potentially wrong here? Really appreciate your help.
    Thanks for your time!

    Greetings Vipins,
This could be caused by CSCto56055 "not getting any value for dot1dtpFdbTable objects", resolved in 5.0(3)U1(2) and later releases.
    Kind Regards,
