Mac curently runng 10.5.8.  Do I need to download 10.6 and then OS Lion or can I go directly to Lion?

Mac currently running 10.5.8.  Want to install OS Lion.  Do I need to download 10.6 first or can I go directly to Lion?

10.6.6 is the minimum as it is the first to include the App Store.
You purchase and download Lion using the App Store.

I just got my mac a month ago so go easy on me but I was just working with the pages that was already on it, and then today I know it updated, and now I am unable to open a lot of my documents!:(  Idk what you mean by the icloud version lol sorry! As for the version, when I open pages from my apps and click 'about' it says version 5.1? And when I open the document it just goes grey and kind of blinks and doesnt open? No error message or any indication of why it will not open now when I for sure have opened it in the past! Andddd for the OS X I think it is 10.9.1 ??

That version cannot be upgraded further if it's a 2G model. The 3G model can be upgraded to iOS 5.x.x. You can't have a 2G model because the maximum iOS version is 4.2.1.

  • If I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 can I upgrade directly to Lion without purchasing Snow Leopard?

    Hi,
I have MAC OS X LEOPARD and I wanted to upgrade to the new Lion Software when it comes out in July. Question is, do I have to buy first the Snow Leopard version and the Lion, or can i skip the Snow Leopard version and buy the new one directly?

10.6.x by default does what we used to call an Archive & Install, just new OS, all your personal files & settings are retained, same with 10.7, so it'll be...
    1. Install 10.6
    2. upgrade to 10.6.8
    3. Download & Install 10.7
3b. Make a copy of the download before installing if you have more than one to do
Thanks for the link, I wasn't aware you could burn the install file to a boot disc.  I had assumed you'd have to install snow leopard, upgrade to 10.6.8, then re-download the massive install file for every machine you wanted to install lion on.  You know, it's kind of ridiculous how little information there is about this considering some reports predict that lion could be released as early as tomorrow.
It would be nice to know if snow leopard is in fact mandatory so I could get my leopard to snow leopard upgrade out of way in advance.  If the upgrade isn't necessary I'd obviously just wait until Lion ships and save myself the trouble.  In my original post I had assumed that if something went wrong during the lion installation that you'd only be able to recover from a snow leopard time machine backup and not a leopard one; if you can only install from SL --> Lion it would make sense that you could only recover your data from an SL backup, that's why I included an extra "full backup" in my upgrade path.
It's kind of absurd that there's no clear answer to such a straightforward question as "What do I need to install Lion?".  Something as simple as "Lion can only be installed from the App store." on the "How to Buy" info page for Lion would let those of us still running Leopard (and those of us who have to coordinate multiple installations) know how to prepare for Lion's release.

  • How can I reboot my Mac mini to factory settings. I want to save my iTunes folder and then reload it after the reboot. I am using OS X Mavericks.

    Help please

What to do before selling or giving away your Mac

  • Mac air won't startup completely (black /white text, info keeps popping up and then it restarts over and over)

Hi so I had to force shut down my Mac air because it froze, when I turn it on it first tells me that I had force shut down so press a key to start up, then it goes to the apple screen, then black strips with white text pop up, then it restarts again. So I looked up what to try to do and I did the "command/r" and it comes up with options, but I don't believe that I set up my time machine backup or something because nothing comes up after it "searches" for a back up thing. and it won't reinstall OS X because it can't find the installation information. And the disk utility doesn't work because it says that I need to "back up as many of [my] files as possible , reformat the disk, and restore [my] back up files" .
I'm not sure what to do but I have a lot of school things I need on it.  So I hope there is some possible way to not erase any of the info on my internal hard rice. I'm also not that good with computers.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Help us help you. The more complete the description of your problem (what MBA you're using - there are many versions going back to '08, what OS you're using -there's a lot of those too- and an iOS will not work with an MBA you must be using some versions of OS X 10.5.x - 10.9.x) the more assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it..
Sounds to me like your SSD and/or your OS is corrupt.
Boot into repair and use Disk Tools->Disk Utility-Disk First Aid: repair disk to try to fix your boot volume. While you're there also do repair permissions.
Reboot holding the Shift Key down until  you see a progress bar at the bottom of the screen and log in. BACK UP YOU IMPORTANT DATA.
Reboot normally (if you can't come back here)

  • HT1338 my current version of mac os x is 10.5.8 we need to update it. what update should i look for?? Idk what mountain lion is or any of these things i'm new to mac

I cant seem to update itunes to sync my phone and ipad with this desktop also bc the version is too old.
Not sure if I've selected the correct "community" as mac os x v10.3....

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

  • My Mac wont start!!! It stays at the white beginning thing and then wont turn on.

My grandma gave us a new Mac computer. The one that doesnt have a tower. So like if you turn it on it will stay at the white screen. We've left it like that all day and it still wont go. I tried the holding shift and it still wont work. My parents don't know what to do and are very frustrated with us. Can you please help me? And don't tell me to go on my apple and go to the virus cleaning website or anything because i cant get on it!

If the mac is new it comes with warranty and you should phone Apple who will sort it out.
In the meantime you could try an SMC & PRAM reset which may help and won't do any harm:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
Can you tell us the details of the Mac. If it's new it'll be running Mountain Lion so you could also try booting into the Recovery HD - but I stress, you shouldn't need to do any of this if the Mac is new.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Edit: And you don't need to worry about viruses, there aren't any currently affecting Macs.
