Mac freezes frequently, then takes 3 or 4 boots to start

I just got my HD replaced by Apple because my HD crashed while installing Leopard. So anyway, I just got it back and it frequently freezes, I have control of the arrow but can't click anything and nothing responds. So I shut down the comp, rebooted it and got the flashing folder/question mark after about 4 minutes of blue screen goodness. So I shut it down 2 or 3 more times it and it finally started up, but it still frequently freezes and I have to repeat the process all over again. Any idea as to what the problem is? And yes, I've ran Disk Utility a couple times and that doesn't fix anything.

Generally speaking its not easy to say something about such sometimes errors but I think there is no easy fix for this because it doesnt seem to be a software problem. I think its serious hardware malfunction
What you can try is loading the default settings in BIOS (F9 key) and save the default settings. Then test it again if you notice the same problem again or not.
If yes I would contact an authorized service provider. Your notebook should be still under warranty so the guys can fix this problem for free.
Have a look on Toshiba website to find nearest service point. :)

Two macs to one hard drive via a kvm or two pc's to a hard drive via a kvm are ok. But a mac and pc to a hard drive no. You need to format the drive so it is acceptable to the system. Windows, probably FAT32 or NTFS. Mac, OS X Extended. While a mac can read those formats and write FAT32 I wouldn't want to back up in that format. You really want a bootable backup (I don't use Time Machine).
Also, kvm? Does that mean you would be connecting through incredibly slow USB?
Get two externals, one of each machine. Use Firrewire if you don't have thunderbolt. At least it is faster than usb.

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

OK, then open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilties - Activity Monitor), look in the column marked %CPU and see if you have any processes that are taking a lot of %CPU.
You can also copy the information out of the crash logs which you will find by opening a Finder window-click the Go menu - choose Go to Folder and input ~/Library/Logs. Then click Crash Reporter and open the first file and copy and paste it's contents to your next post.

MacBook Pro freezes frequently

I bought a Macbook Pro last year in september for school.
Now i have the problem that it freezes frequently, at seemingly random times.
It happens about once a month.
Is there any way to solve this problem?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.

Mac Pro freezes frequently after "NVChannel" error in system.log

Can anybody here with a 2008 Mac Pro run the Folding @ Home client without hard crashing the Mac?
I have a 2008-model Mac Pro, with the nVidia GeForce 8800 GT, which freezes frequently. As detailed in an earlier post[1], the graphics driver sees to be implicated, as just before the freezes, messages like this appear in the system log:

If you google for "NVChannel freeze" then you will find many many Mac owners whose machines freeze with similar symptoms. Apple recently released the "Leopard Graphics Update" which fixes such problems for some users, but not others.
In my 2008 Mac Pro's case, I have found a way to trigger the freeze 100% of the time: install the freeware Folding@Home client[2], and run the demo in the Applications folder. Just opening this app causes those messages to appear in the log, and then the Mac freezes.
I work for a software company which writes Mac software, so now that I have found a reliable way to reproduce this issue, I will be filing a bug report through Apple's bug system. But for my own sanity, I would like to collect more info, if possible.
If you have a 2008 Mac Pro and want to be cool, try running the Folding @ Home client app (link below) and post in this thread:
a.) whether or not your Mac froze
b.) what video card you have
c.) how much RAM you have

Yup… this is a memory fault and you should firstly try reseating the RAM and memory Risers (even change the slots they are in - depending on your configuration of course). The can often remove these issues.
Failing that, I would contact the RAM vendor and discuss it with them. Depending on how they sell things it might be simpler to send a kit, as in two DIMMs, back for replacement rather than a single DIMM that is part of a kit. Also, unless they specifically match your original DIMMs then you'd be better of returning both.

You have SCADS of extensions and the things running. McAfee, Intego, Orbicule, CleanMyMac, and others I've not ever even heard of. My first recommendation would be to remove all of these and see if things improve.

How can I download Firefox onto a disk from my Windows PC, and then take the disk to my Mac and upload it to use on the Mac? Safari does not work anymore.

My Mac assures me that I am connected to the internet, using Airport and also ethernet, but Safari never gives me a home page. Can I download Firefox onto a disk using my Windows PC and then take the disk to the Mac and upload Firefox to use on the Mac ?

Mac OS X Lion Server screen freezes frequently

I have recently purchased the Mac Mini Server with 8GB RAM Upgrade and have been experiencing screen freezes frequently. The Mac Mini is connected to a ViewSonic LED Monitor via an HDMI cable and is running Mac OS X Lion Server.
It all started a month ago and I suspected it was due to an external hard disk I had. When I removed it the problem didn't crop up for a few weeks. So I thought the issue was resolved.
Over the past week the problem re-surfaced again and nearly everyday I am experiencing screen freezing about five times a day and the only option is to power down my Mac Mini Server from the power button. This is becoming increasingly frustrating. When screen freezing occurs, everything freezes and I get some small rectangular boxes on screen moving.
The only things that have changed over the past week was that I installed the latest Safari fix and connected the Harman Kardon Sounsticks II to the Mac Mini.
Can't understand what is happening. From various threads I read, many mac users are experiencing screen freezes. If anyone has any resolutions please let me know.

Lion has a screen refresh bug it is just the screen going to sleep and the the screen updating only where the curser moves.

New Mac Pro Freezes frequently in FCP

We recently replace our G5 video editing computer with a new Mac Pro. We are running most current version of Final Cut, Quicktime and Leopard. 8GB RAM. Our G5 virtually never froze up, but the new one freezes frequently during editing. Beach ball that doesn't go away w/o holding down the start button on the computer.
All sw was clean install on the new machine.
Anyone else experiencing or have suggestions?

Putting the Project file on another drive does ZERO for performance. Keep it on your system drive.
Trash preferences
Use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions
Remove your RAM and see if you still have issues.

Glitches appearing on screen, then Mac freezing

Hi all,
Yesterday glitches appeared on my screen - small rectangles - which then resulted in the mac freezing. When I restarted, it brought up the dreaded reboot screen before booting properly, with the glitches still showing (see picture below, including the glitches).

Now the machine will occasionally get through to Finder and then bring up glitches, or the screen will be frozen except for the cursor, which I can move around but won't click anything.
Not sure if it's related but my battery needs replacing (it lasts about 10 min on full charge).

Otherwise make sure you are using a power cord of the proper voltage, and it is receiving power. The little nob that connects from the cord to the computer should show a green or orange light when it is connected to the computer. If there is no little light on the nob, then it isn't receiving power.
