Mac Mini Server - Best Way to Enable Multiple Users to Connect via Remote Access Concurrently?

Hi
Is there a limit on the number of users that can connect simultaneously via remote access to a Mac Mini running Mac Mini Server?

If you have the server application on your Mac mini there is an upper limit but it is so high that I wouldn't worry about it. Depending on how you will be using the server and what it will be supporting there is a practical limit based on performance not software. If you reach the limit of satisfactory performance, the solution is adding another Mac mini server.

  • Best Ways to Handle Multiple Users

First post....heres my question. Can anyone help me determine the best way to handle multiple users in itunes? Some Background:
My family shares one computer. We have on folder on the hard drive where we keep all our music files. I got an ipod and itunes and added some of the music to itunes and have pretty much used itunes for my music.
Now my girlfriend got an ipod and I am hoping to somehow keep her music away from mine so to speak. So that I can keep synching my ipod without adding a bunch of music I dont want.
Is there a way to handle this? So thankfull for any help!

There is an apple article on this here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432
It sounds as though method 1 would be best for you.
Also see how to keep the music files in one place to avoid duplication:

  • Best way to assign multiple users security, privileges and workbook shares.

Is there another way to assign multiple users to a single workbook other than using the workbook management option. Something that can be done from the command line? How about assigning security and privileges from the command line?

You could consider altering the appropriate EUL tables directly - I'm sure someone has the code for this - but requires database interaction (and might not be supported by Oracle, etc.).
However, the concept or Oracle responsibilities (in Oracle Apps EUL) or Oracle roles (in Oracle database) is what's usually done. In fact, I don't like using users directly as if they go, etc. it's a pain.
Better to use pre-defined groupings that you probably already have (ie: Apps responsibility such as: AP Inquiry). You set the privs / security there and it takes effect for all users logging in with that responsibility / role.

  • Best way to manage multiple users and multiple devices?

I would like some advice on the best way to manage iTunes and devices synced to it for multiple users -- Here's the scenario: I have 2 grade-school aged kids, who each have an iPod Nano and are going to get my old iPhone 3G to use as an iTouch after I upgrade my phone to the iPhone 4. In addition to my iPhone, I have a MacBook, a 30GB iPod, and a iMac. We are also looking into buying an iPad that we'll want to use (among other things) to watch movies while traveling. All music/apps/movies are currently located in my iTunes account on the iMac, and we sync via my personal @mac.com account.
I don't want to simply set up separate iTunes accounts for each kid, as I'd like to be able to control what music & apps they buy/download, and I've already got a fair amount of "their" music/apps/movies in my account, and don't want to have to try and move it from my account to theirs. Any advice on how to best set up an iTunes sharing arrangement that allows me to control their accounts, and sync all of the above devices would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • What is the best way to enable multiple people to work together in Imovie?

I am teaching a class of seven students who are creating a movie together. How can we set up this project so that they can each have access to the movie project files to work on their part of it? The master media files are on a shared college media file server. But is there a way where we can share access to the actual imovie project? Thanks.

  • New Lion Server, New way to import multiple users?

In Snow Leopard Server there is no way to import more than one user without buying 3rd party software. Does anyone know if this has been addressed in OS X 10.7 ? I have 220 users to create and wanted to find or before I went crazy. Thanks very much.

    Haven't tried this...but:
    WorkGroup Manager 10.7 Server->Import...
It spawns a dialogue letting you choose a file and set various parameters like duplicate handling.

  • Mac mini Server as a gateway/router

I'd like to make my Mac mini server my main gateway for my office.
I'd like it to perform the following tasks:
    - DHCP & NAT for sharing an Internet connection
    - a wireless access point so that no AEBS or TC is necessary
    - VPN for access to the Daylite server that will be running on it as well as file sharing for remote users
My goal here is to create a single Internet alliance that will prevent me from having to use a separate router and will provide secure remote access to the LAN.
I have a Mac mini server and a USB Ethernet adapter. I connected the USB Ethernet adapter to the WAN which has a static IP. And the built in Ethernet to the gigabit switch for the LAN.
So far, I have two problems:
    1) I can't seem to VPN in from remote despite my best efforts of setting this up with the gateway assistant.
    2) I have no idea on how I can use the built-in airport card to become a wireless access point for the wireless clients in the office. I chose the airport in the gateway assistant but wireless clients are on a different subnet and can't see the LAN resources.
I'm interested in hearing other ideas and strategies on how to use the mms in this way. Is anyone else doing this? Everyone seems to want to use an AEBS or TC in addition to the mms and maybe I'm missing something but why would you need one?

It wasn't so much the $50 that I was worried about... just the redundancy... having both an OS X Server AND an Airport Extreme (or third-party router) seemed like such a waste if the server could be made to do it all.
So, at this point, I see two options:
    1) Put an AEBS on the gigabit switch (LAN) and turn off everything... essentially reducing it down to a wireless access point... and put it in Bridge mode so that wireless clients can see the wired LAN.
    2) Use the AEBS as my gateway and DMZ the server... turning off the gateway features (DNS, DHCP, NAT, etc...) on the server. This would remove the need for the USB Ethernet adapter but would I still be able to configure it as a VPN?
Either one seems a shame. I was really hoping for a single-box solution to sell my clients.
The other problem is still happening... for some reason, I can't connect to the VPN... it doesn't even seem to be getting to the authentication part. It simply says, "The Server is not responding". This is strange since other services for which I've forwarded specific ports seem to respond without issue. I assumed that all the neccessary ports would be opened when I turned on the VPN feature... did I miss something?

  • Mac Mini Server / No HDMI signal ?

    Hi All,
Since yesterday, no signal passes from my Mac Mini Server through my TV (Full HD). The connection is performed by HDMI cable and works fine till one month. I have bought my Mac one month ago.
All the other devices works fine with the HDMI cable... so it is not the cable the origin.
I can always reach my Mac Mini from my iMAC.
I observe that I can only select in the system panel the following resolutions :
    1680x1050
    1280x1024
    1024x768
    800x600.
And sRGB IEC61966-2,1 is selected in the panel Color / Profile.
I can not see anymore the 1080p option...
I guess that the hardware doen't work anymore (Graphic card or HDMI output ?). I have serached a diag or someting to test the hardware in tehe system, but it seems that it is not include in the system.
Does anyone could suggest me something ?
    Regards.

Sadly the hardware might be damaged. When two devices with separate power units are connected by wires strange things might happen during power on/off especially when they are conncted from different wall outlets. But before sorrow lets do some more checks:
    - what is displayed under "About this Mac -> System Report -> Graphic/Displays", copy & paste here
    - what exact model of mac mini do you have, do you know what exact Graphic card there is installed?
The PRAM might be corrupted as woodmeister50 pointed out. If you have already done the PRAM reset please let us know if the mac get's up from sleep now. I have such unfortunate experience that resetting PRAM helped with Graphic but introduced problem with sleep mode - the mac seems to wake from sleep, I hear HDD srcatches, but never turn on the HDMI display. From that point I can only cut the power and power on again to wake the display. I have disabled main sleep in preference, the display sleep works fine - turn off display and wake it back. However it is a little pain as I leave the mac turned on for days so now it takes 12W instead of 1W doing nothing. I got used to utilize the sleep mode and I can't make different habbit now. Still I do not know how to fix the sleep mode.

  • Set up Mac Mini Server, now what?

I helped someone set up a Mac Mini Server just out of the box.
turned on, connected directly to their router, put in all the new info to set up the mac mini and then looked at it....
So we read we need to create SERVER USERS, not users for a separate account on the mac mini, but server users.  did that, or so we think we did...
one person who wants to run it is running 10.5.5 on is mac book, so I went to the iMac running 10.6 and went to sys prefs and connected to the server ... or so we think we did.
the green light is on but NOW WHAT?
the server doesn't show anyone connected.
but they can see the server on the side bar and when they connect to that, they have to use the password for the mac mini not their server password we created so they are not connected to it as a server they are connected as a hard drive, but the server admin software shows that NOW there is a user connected...
Am I missing something.  how do you take advantage of the server software if you have to connect like you would to someone else's computer?
and then why create server users on the server if they are not connecting to it through that?
    What are we missing?

I am not sure if this is exactly what the original poster was looking for, but perhaps I can try to clarify for him because I am coming from a similar place (and I think there might be a lot more of us now that server is a $50 add on, so a lot of novices setting up home or small business servers for the first time).
I think this problem might be worsened by the fact that though apple has done a decent job of explaining how to set things up in the server app itself, they seemed to have skipped over what you are supposed to do on your user computers that you are trying to connect with the server.
Anyway, I would like to start out with using server on my mac mini for file sharing and time machine backups (and then expand from there, once that is up and running), so I have gone through the setup of these in the server app: creating the user accounts, assigning them access to a couple of external HDs that I have attached to my Mac Mini, i tried to match the account names to the user accounts that are on the laptops that we are trying to wirelessly connect to the server, etc.
So my expectation is that then I would restart my computer, it would match up the username on the laptop with the username account on the server, i would login and then the file shares would automatically mount. Or, I could go into my Login options on my admin account of one of the laptops that I am trying to connect to the server and I could join it to the server. Both of these options seemed to be spelled out in the only explanation of what is supposed to happen from the user perspective, which was in the Snow Leopard documentation:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Mac_OSX_Server_v10.6_Getting_Started.pdf on pg 111 or so.
But neither of these routes are working for me, so I am wondering what I am doing wrong.

  • HT204350 I,m going to change my Mac mini server and time capsule at the same time what's the best way to transfer from both of my old machines

I've just purchased a new Mac mini server and also a new time capsule is there any easy way to ghost or transfer the new machines at the same time or is it best to do one at a time?

I have no direct experience transferring a TC and computer at the same time, but prudence tells me to do one, test to be sure it is correct only then do the other. It will take twice as long from process start to finish, but avoids any nasty surprises at process end. In close to 40 years experience, I have never seen a "crash conversion" (everything at the same time) that did not have at least one major disaster. I am sure it can happen but the odds are heavily against it. Patience is a virtue!

  • Whats the best way to move from mac mini server to Mac pro server?

Hi everyone. I am currently running a mac mini server and it's maxed out. I have just purchased a Mac Pro server and I was wondering if anyone has moved there data in a similar scenario. Is it as simple as restoring a time machine backup to the new server? Any insight would most appreciated as I need this to go smoothly. Thank you.

Apple's official Time Machine documentation says NOT to use TM to back up an entire server.
The reason being is that it will NOT properly back up your databases.  The three in question most often used with OS X server is the Mail DB, the MySQL DB and the Open Directory.
Database experience tells me that reason behind their not supporting Databases is the issue with reading info that's being written to or read from while TM is doing it's thing.  It's likely that if the server is under load when the time machine backs up, you're going to get an inconsistent copy.
The ONLY apple documented GUI method of restoring a server is by using the Setup Assistant during the initial setup of a server.  (using a firewire cable to connect and having your old server in target disk mode)
This in fact I would say is the most reliable method of migration.
    (my 2 cents)
Write more and let us know how the new server works on a continual basis!  I've not heard of anyone having a successful restore taken from a live server.

  • Is there a way to access my iTunes library that's stored on my Mac Mini Server at home over the internet while I'm away on business?

    Hello.
I've done a bit of searching on Google and have come up empty so far and am looking for your help.
    Here's my situation:
I have my iTunes media files stored on my NAS on my home network along with my Mac Mini Server with the iTunes library files stored in my Dropbox folder. While I'm at home I can access all of my files without any problems from either my Mac Mini Server or my Macbook Air; however, I recently moved to San Diego for work and would still like to access the media that's on my NAS at home remotely from my Macbook Air so I can sync my iPhone and watch movies.
Is this even possible? If so, how would I go about setting this up?
    Thanks!

The sessionstore.js file only exists while Firefox is closed. During shutdown, Firefox writes out that file based (I think) on recovery.js as of that point. When Firefox starts back up again, it reads sessionstore.js and deletes it. So if Firefox is running, it's normal not to see sessionstore.js. Anyway, sessionstore.js is going to be empty now.
Shadow Explorer might already have done this for you, but just in case...
You could try the previous versions feature. This is harder to get to on Windows 8 and 8.1, but I have read about a roundabout way. I can't test this myself, but here's what you do:
Let's say you have a Windows Explorer window open to your current Firefox profile folder. This is something like (with your username and semi-random profile folder name):
    C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\blahblah
Click in the address bar and change the C: to
    \\localhost\c$
to yield (with your username and semi-random profile folder name)
    \\localhost\c$\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\blahblah
Press Enter to reload the folder contents that way.
Now when you right-click recovery.js, recovery.bak, backup.js or sessionstore.js and choose Properties, there should be a Previous Versions tab. Usually the most recent previous version dates back to the last time Windows created a restore point (e.g., system update or possibly scheduled on a more frequent basis).

  • What is "best practice" to set up and configure a Mac Mini server with dual 1 TB drives, using RAID 1?

I have been handed a new, out of the box, Mac Mini server.  Has two 1 TB drives in it.  Contractor suggested RAID 1 for the set up.  I have done some research
and found out that in creating the software RAID, this takes away the recovery partition, so I have been reading up on how to create a recovery "disk" using a thumb drive.  this part of the operation I am comfortable with, but there are other issues/concerns that I have.
Basically, what is the "best practice" to setup the Mini, configure the RAID and then start the server.  I am assuming the steps would be something like this:
    1) start up the Mini and run through the normal Maverick setup/config - keep it plain and vanilla
    2) grab a copy of the Server app and store it offline in a safe place
    3) perform the RAID configuration / reinstall of OS X Maverick using the recovery tools
    4) copy down and start the server app
This might be considered a very simplified version of this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4886 - Mac mini server (Late 2012 and Mid 2011): How to install OS X Server on a software RAID volume), with the biggest difference being I grab a copy of the Server App off of the mini before I reinstall, since I did not purchase it from the App store, but rather it came with the mini.
Is there a best practice /  how-to tutorial somewhere that I can follow/learn from? Am I on the right track or headed for a train wreck?
    thanks in advance

I think this article will answer your question. Hope this helps: http://wisebyte.blogspot.com/2014/01/best-configuration-for-mac-mini-server.html

I'm moving GIGs of files over to my mac mini server from my MBP. Right now it says its going to take 140 hours to move my iPhoto library over. Is their a faster way to connect to the Mac Mini Server other then ethernet? Right now my MBP is wired to my verizon router/switch and my server is wired to the router/switch. Can I put a firewire directly from the server to my MBP? Will that work?

Yes, it should. So should the suggested ethernet cable between the two directly.
