Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Step 4
ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
You can then quit Terminal.

I Just installed mountain lion and my Mac keeps freezing. Does anyone else have ththat same problem?
Hello, let's see if we can find the cause...
1. Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions, reboot & test.
2.
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
3. Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
4. How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
5. Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
6. In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
7. One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

after doing my firmware update, my brand new iMac (Lion 10.7) keeps freezing up and I have to hold the power button to restart it. Is anyone else having this problem or did I get a messed up computer?
Seriously glad it isn't just my one year old Macbook Pro that is having the problems after going from Snow Leopard to Lion. I took mine to Apple twice now, they basically think I'm stupid and even asked me if I'd dropped it!! They don't seem to recognise the problems, after a 'stress test' and some other things they sent me on my way. I was back within a week getting the entire thing wiped and reinstalling Lion - I am back to where I started with a very unhappy computer. It crashes on startup, on the log-in page and has to be manually turned off and on several times before it'll even let me on the thing. It can crash whilst simply opening Finder or when I only have Safari open. Back to the genius bar for me....

MACBOOK Air/ OS Lion Keeps Freezing and restarting "because of an error"
Hi,
My Macbook keeps freezing - keyboard and touchpad do not respond and then after a few seconds it restarts. A Screen comes on to say that it restarted "because of a problem" Often it freezes at login. It has frozen at least 6 times as I type this. This is the console diagnostic for the last hang. Anyone advice?
Thank you,
Al.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Mac Pro (2009) keeps freezing
Alright so I have a 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 desktop with a 2.66GHz Xeon processor. I'm having this ongoing issue (for the past 2-3 weeks) where after anywhere from a minute to say 20 minutes or so the desktop completely freezes. No kernel panics, just a frozen desktop. Keyboard & mouse are both completely useless & my monitor no longer goes into sleep mode after 7 minutes like I've set, so I have to hold down the power button on the front of the machine to shut it off. I brought it into apple and they kept it over night and ran all the tests they could throw at it. When I got it back they said my boot drive (a WD 2TB 7200RPM 64mb cache) was bad, and that was why it was freezing. They told me besides that the machine is 100%. So I went out and bought a brand new Seagate 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB cache drive, installed it in bay 1 then installed OS X Mavericks and did all the updates. That fixed the problem (or so I thought), so I put my Windows Drive (bay 2), iTunes drive (bay 3), & my time machine drive (bay 4) back in. Again all was well. Until today (little over a week since the last batch of freezes) when it started to freeze again. It never freezes for any specific reason or on any specific application.. It just randomly freezes. I've tried reinstalling mavericks at least a dozen times... No dice. I've tried different ram.. Again, didn't change anything. I even removed all my drives except my OS X boot drive (from bay 1) still freezes. Part of me thinks I might need to replace the Backplane Board.. I'm thinking it might be a SATA issue.. But I'm not sure enough to order the part. So if anyone with some more knowledge or experience with this sort of issue could help me out, that would be fantastic. To add to this, I've ran many different tests, all say my machine is issue free. I've also repaired and verified permissions many times. And before anyone says try safe mode.. I have & it still freezes.
ThanksI ran EtreCheck and this is what I got.

Lion keeps freezing, computer slower, WiFi problems
Ever since installing Lion my computer is much slower everything is lagging. My computer never frezes and now it freezes all the time mostly when i am trying to open something in the dock. the Wifi takes forever to conncet. Is Apple going to fix this or should I just revert back to Snow Leopard? I only updated to use Cloud but my computers a mess now.
If you JUST installed lion, your computer will have to reindex itself via spotlight, which takes up cpu and time. How much ram do you have?
If you're already going to go through the process of uninstalling lion, try reinstalling it first to see if your issues pursist. hold cmd+R while rebooting. run disk utility from here (the recovery partition) to verify and repair the disk you're installing lion on, and then reinstall lion. Make sure you are connected to a reliable internet source, or plug in your ethernet if you can, and turn off wifi before proceeding to install lion.
Let me know how everything turns out. There is no doubt that lion needs some improvement but it's also third party applications that seem to have a really tough time adjusting to lion and they all need to be updated. (this is typical for new OS releases, though companies have a good amount of time before Lion is released they usually fail to find all the bugs until it hits the masses.
feel free to file some feedback to apple as we are all just users like yourself. http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html -
Hi. My wonderful hubby surprised me with a new MacBook Pro last night (he will be deploying soon and won't be home for the holidays, valentines day, my birthday or our anniversary)! I have a great camera and a TON of photos on my laptop that I don't want to lose. So I downloaded the migration software to my Asus and it starts out just fine and then freezes around the 1 hr and 48 minutes left. I have changed the energy settings so that it doesn't sleep, but still likes to freeze. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the screen saver? Can someone help this new Mac user? I feel like I'm learning a new language!
You have posted to the older PPC iMac forum. You need to poster to a newer iMac forum.
I suggest posting here:

Try double clicking on the harddrive icon on your desktop
You should get something like this.
On the left pane is a list of common places.
All the user data is in the /Users folder.
See the magnifying glass on the upper left of the screen. This is spotlight. Type in a file name.

What does it mean if my Mac Pro laptop keeps freezing?
My laptop has been freezing a lot lately; especially locks up when using Microsoft applications (word, excel) but also freezes when online. What would cause this?

It's rather difficult with the information provided, it could be network related issue, a router issue, a Mac issue or a software issue.
Your going to have to procced in a process of elimination to try to narrow down the cause.
Can you further describe the freezing? Do you get a spinning beachball only on the Internet or if totally disconnected too?
You can look through these user tips of mine

Mac book pro keeps freezing could it be a loose disk drive
I was burning a cd and had my Mac book pro in my hands while i was walking and i tilted a bit while cd was in heard a grinding noise. The next day the white screen if death w question mark appeared i was able to reboot it made it to home screen it seems to be freezing when moved? It's a 2009 and warranty is expired anyone have any suggestions i would appreciate any feedback! Thanks!
You were walking with it on, and while burning a CD? Double mistake there.
Immediately backup with an external HD all your vital data.
Your words are a bit unclear, can you boot it up now ok? Freezing when moved is the SMS sensor.
Your HD is likely dying and walking with it on did it no good after these several years.
Contact Apple for diagnostic / repair. Your HD likely needs to be replaced. -
My 21.5" quad core i5 iMac mid 2011 with LION keeps freezing.
this has never happened before while using snow leopard, but when using lion suddenly it freezes when i was on youtube and it has frozen when i was syncing my ipod. the other bad thing about it, is the computer doesn't know that it has frozen and it wont automatically restart even though i have the setting on.
hopefully this is just teething problems since lion is a new operating system, but i'd expect more from a company like apple.
any suggestions? or maybe a patch will come out?hello,
I am yet to upgrade my OS to Lion but I have experienced this thing on my leopard 10.6 quiet a few times. I called the customer care support guy he gave me a solution to make the macbook run smooth without gettign freezed ( i hope it also works for the iMac ). So, what he told me to do is to drag and drop the entire caches as well as the startupitems folder ( Macintosh HD> Library ) and also the caches folder from your computer account library. restart computer then empty trash box and again restart the computer and use it but honestly bro I dont know if this will help you in OS x Lion.
Can you not restart the iMac after it is getting freezed ?? -
My apple starts up fine...tells me to log in..nothing wrong...I do but the loading screen takes longer than usual. I get to the home screen and it loads everything slowly...I can open One thing and it starts to freeze and gives me the rainbow spinning ball of doom....and won't go away and I can't quit or anything..it's just stuck on that until I force shut down my computer. I can't even back it up! I have heaps of important files on there. S.O.S! Help me. I need to figure it out to get some things done.
Hello Peasants,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Since your Mac only starts to behave like this once you log in, there may be some startup or boot processes that are slowing your computer down to a crawl. For starters, I'd like you to try and boot your Mac into Safe Mode by following the information in the article below. Let me know what the outcome is regardless.
OS X Yosemite: Start up in safe mode
Have a good one,

Couple of clicks in keeps freezing
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Its a new mac book air bought 1 week ago. 4gb ram 256 hdd. When I watch a video on youtube it loads then all of a sudden the white circle which shows the progress is at the beginning and the clip is still playing then shortly after the loading symbol appears and doesn't play anymore. Anybody know what the problem is?
Tried emptying history and all that other cookies and internet content. Tried the permission thingy.Let me explain.
You can't ask a drive partition to "repair itself".
So, you have to be booted to a different drive, than the drive that is causing the problem.
In this case, your problem disk is your startup disk. The "startup disk" is the drive that you boot to every day. So in this case, we need to boot to a different disk. On your system, you have the main startup drive on one partiton, and the Recovery Disk on a separate partition. Both of these partitions physically reside on your computer's hard drive, or SSD, but appear to be two independent drives to the system.
You are going to boot to the Recovery Disk, or more accurately sometimes called, the "Recovery Partition". To do this, we use the "option boot". This means holding down the OPTION key, while booting. After a few moments, you will be presented by a display of avaialble boot disks. You choose the one marked "recovery". Once booted up, you will chose Disk Utility. This is an App that is built-in to the Recovery Partiton for the sole purpose of managing drives, disks, and partitions without having to be booted to the main startup disk.
From here, you can select the starup drive, usually called "Macintosh HD", by default. After you select the drive, you can perform actions on that drive. One button will "repair permissions", another will "verify disk", and still another with "repair disk". By running "repair disk", Disk utility will attempt to repair certain software errors on the drive that might be preventing a good read of critical files needed to boot to the startup drive.
As well, "Repair Permissions" can also fix certain problems that may make the system unusable, or difficult.
You can also exit Disk Utility to perform a reinstalltion of the operating system, or recovery from a Time Machine backup.
As a last ditch, you can use disk Utility to completely erase your startup disk, in preparation for reinstallation of the OS. (this is after ALL ELSE fails) -

My Mac OS X keeps freezing once I try to do anything. I can turn on my laptop with no problems just a bit slow, but once I try to click on anything the spinning wheel appears and stays till I have to force quit. Ive ran the hard ware test and it detected no problems? I cant run any updates on operating systems as was suggested by a friend as it freezes once I try to click on the apple icon. I dont know for sure how much memory I have left and I can't check now but I think it wasnt much. Dont know what to do....appreciate any suggestions.
