Mac OS X 10.6.8 - Xcode Question

I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and am trying to create an app for an iphone/ipad. I currently have Xcode 3.1, but is it true that to create an app that could be used you need the latest version?
If so, I would need to update my mac to 10.8.4. Would I be able to do this by purchasing Mountain Lion and updating the software? Please advise.

I don't know the details about Xcode and iOS - but fairly recent OSX and Xcode versions are usualy required. If possible you should probably run the most recent versions.
Maveriks (10.9) is a free OS update that (from what I have read) can be applied, as long as one is running at least 10.6 and has hardware that supports it.
Maveriks (10.9) has the same hardware requirements as 10.8:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.

  • Mac OS X Server 4.1, Xcode 6.3.1 "This version of Xcode cannot be used with this server"

    I'm utterly confused.
The documentation for Mac OS X Server (from https://help.apple.com/serverapp/mac/4.0/#/apdA154F061-7CE4-4A58-843D-DC2CE3A1AE 8C ) shows that Xcode 6 or later (my emphasis). I have installed Mac OS X 10.10.3, Mac OS X Server 4.1, Xcode 6.3.1. I have no apps in the App Store's "Update" tab that need to be updated (just now double-checked). I clicked to the Xcode tab under "Services" in OS X Server, clicked the "Choose Xcode…" button, selected the version of Xcode from the Applications folder on the root HDD, and got the error message "This version of Xcode cannot be used with OS X Server."
    So .... now what?

Well, for some reason it just started working.  I was busy trying to fix another issue when I noticed that the Xcode service was running.  I would still like to know what happened in case I have a similar problem with the next OS/Server upgrade, but for now it's at least running.

If I reset my Mac's PRAM and NVRAM because the question mark in starting up  . Will that earase anything ?

Hold the option key down and boot your computer, a row of icons appears, select your OS X and click the arrow
Once in, head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select yours, this will tell the firmware again what your supposed to boot from.
If that doesn't work, then run through this list of fixes

What can I do to boot?

Restart with the Option key held down.
If the internal drive shows up, it's the PRAM battery.
If it doesn't, insert a compatible Mac OS 9 or X install disk, click the button with the circular arrow, and either repair the internal drive or install a new OS on it. If it doesn't show up in Disk First Aid(9) or the Disk Utility(X), it's either not plugged in or needs to be replaced.

  • Correct installation of BDB XML on Mac OS X, and use with XCode

I downloaded the tarball, compiled the whole thing without a problem, and then copied the contents of the install directory to /usr/ (trying to change the prefix on the configure script stopped it from compiling, for some reason) because I didn't want to add stuff to my path (and the contents looked like they belonged in /usr anyway)
But now I'm not sure how to get XCode to find the search paths and libraries. Does anyone who has a working installation of BDB XML on mac os feel like giving me some pointers as to how they did it?
    Thanks,
    Daniel Peebles

I don't know the exact answer to your question, but you can probably figure it out on your own like:
    1) Create a File object that represents an existing file. Play around with the path until the file can be found.
    2) Now that you have a File object representing a valid, existing path, use MyFile.getAbsolutePath() to see what the full path string is. MyFile.getCanonicalPath() might provide some answers as well.
Whatever getAbsolutePath() returns is the correct format for the file path string.

  • Xcode question

    Hi,
I downloaded Xcode and associated tools
to build a sample iPhone app, just because
I like the Apple iPhone so much (:-).
When I opened Xcode, instead of showing me
a list of pictures with one of them being
an iPhone section with Window Application
(e.g. build an iPhone app), I got a long list of
    other things.
One was Cocoa which I used but it generated
a Window-based program for my Mac Book OS
(which worked fine) but wasn't what I want.
What's the catch with getting Xcode to understand
    iPhone?
The version of Xcode I am running is 2.5.
    Thanks ahead for any insight.

When you run the iphonesdk_foriphon...2.19m2621afinal.dmg installer, check your environment and click thru the agreements, you eventually get to step 5 'Installation Type'.
    (Default) choices there should include:
    [√] Developer Tools Essentials
    [√] iPhone SDK*
    [√] System Tools
    [√] UNIX Development Support
    [-] Mac OS X 10.3.9 Support
    [-] WebObjects
*The iPhone SDK requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X version 10.5.3 or later.
•Natural question 01: Is there a √ next to 'iPhone SDK'?
•Natural question 02: Do you have an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X version 10.5.3 or later?

  • Mac Newbie - System restore/Time machine type question

Hi There, Macbook newbie here, got my macbook for xmas and I am totally converted.
I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of how to set up a 'system restore' type of thing similiar to the windows system restore via time machine.
Do I need to connect to an external hard drive for this?
External hard drive question, are there special 'mac' external hard drives or could I just pick anyone up eg seagate/freecom etc?
Anti virus question: which software would you recommend for Anti virus?
Appreciate any help and looking forward to making them most of my new mac!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
In addition to the info offered by Jolly Giant, Time Machine is rather different from the system restore feature of Windoze.
First, a bit of terminology: +Time Machine+ is the software built-in to recent Macs that does backups and restores. It can back up to an internal HD, an external HD, or a +Time Capsule,+ which is a piece of Apple hardware that combines a wireless router and hard drive.
Technically, this forum is for +Time Capsules;+ there are separate forums in the Leopard and Snow Leopard sections for +Time Machine.+
Time Machine backs-up +*your entire system+* -- OSX, apps, configuration, users, settings, preferences, data, etc. It also keeps previous versions of things you've changed or deleted (so it needs more space than what's used on your system).
You can then easily browse the backups and restore selected items, if you've deleted or changed them in error, or they somehow got corrupted.
Or, if something goes terribly wrong, you can also restore your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any backup, even if that's a previous version of OSX. That's the procedure Jolly Giant referred you to in the FAQ Tip.

  • Mac OS10.8.3 and CS6 Bridge question

In CS 6, when I go to "File" > "Browse in Bridge" on the drop down menu, "Browse in Mini Bridge" is  always highlighted in blue, along with "Import" and  "Automate" and "Scripts".  Other options including "Browse in Bridge" are available, but not highlighted in blue.
I have no clue why these options are highlighted as I never have used any of them in the other versions of PSCS I've used, as I much prefer just "Browse in Bridge". .  Is there any way to remove the highlight on these options, (but NOT remove the options)  ? It isn't a BIG deal, just annoying.
Hope someone can enlighten me ~
    Thanks... Carolyn

Yes, you are right.  This is more of a Photoshop question, and I appreciate your calling it to my attention.  I did do as you suggested, but was unable to uncheck "What's New" in PS6.  I tried a dozen times, and no matter what I do, it just won't uncheck.
I have actually posted this qustion on the dpreview.com Retouching Forum and Mac Forum, but yours is the first answe I've received in several days.  So I appreciate your trying to help, and give you a "yes" for alerting me to my error in thinking it was a Bridge question.
Like I mentinoed, this is not a critical problem, just an annoying one.  There are a LOT of options that are highlighted, but the one on "Mini Bridge' just hits me in the face everytime I get on PS and want to just "Browse in Bridge". It's like someone trying to make you buy something you don't want ! :-)  I guess I'll just have to get used to it !
Thanks again for trying to help
