Mac OS X 10.9.4 Server 3.12

In Mac OS X 10.6 Server you had the possibility to activate and view error log with the named.log file in the Server Admin App with different level of messages
From novice to debug
How I could get a debug mode for DNS service for Mac  OS X 10.9 Server in the server app or in the command line ?
I Need some help (so many option in the GUI in Server compare to the old Interface in Mac OS X 10.6
Thanks

Debugging advanced server setup is very difficult. It seems like there is only one error message, and you get that one error message and nothing works until you get everything right, then it all works.
For DNS setup, you can use the Network Utility "Lookup" function.
Enter the three-part fully qualified domain name, of the form myserver.mydomain.com and it should show you the correct ONE IP Address.
Enter the correct IP address and it should show you the fully qualified domain name in the form my server.mydomain.com, and NO OTHERS.

  • Using a Mac Mini as a File/Media server with different accounts

I recently bought a new iMac and decided to use my G4 Mac Mini as a media/file server and backup server.
One of the decisions I can't figure out is how to organize all of my files and user accounts. I especially would like to be able to access them from either my iMac or my Powerbook. Also, I'd like to be able to use the iMac as the main iPhoto and iTunes machine.
    So here's my ideal situation:
On the Mini create a user account for each media/user type: Music, Movies, Photos, Backup and then on the other Macs automount each user.
But I can't because once you connect to a mount via Finder you always connect via the same user. (is there a way around that?)
So I guess I can do it all under one user account, but then all of my configurations require subfolders which I was trying to avoid. It also means that if I give my kids access to one set of media, they get access to all.
Is there any way to create a more segmented Media Server? Is there any reason to or am I just making this too complicated?
    Thanks

One more important detail. I have external HDs connected to the mini as well. While testing the single user method, I realized I couldn't mount those external HDs. Could be because I set the media user to a Standard User. But I still find that odd.
One way I did find to solve my ideal situation is to use Windows File Sharing instead of Personal File Sharing. By editing the smb.conf file I can share specific directories under specific users.
But surely the best way to network on a Mac is not using Samba is it?

I want to install XP Pro SP2 on a Mac Mini from a 2003 RIS server. Is this possiIble? How is it done?
The mac has 10.5 which has bootcamp to enable Windows install. I have created a partition but the bootcamp utility asks for a CD. I want to install a RIS build. The Mac has a option for network boot but this seems to only work with Mac Server. I assume the network adapter is not PXE compatible and so a boot disk of some kind will be needed to kick this off?.

  • Can I use Mac Pro as a Mainframe to serve 10 PCs?

I need to furnish a Mac lab, and I thought if I can use a Mac Pro with 12 core, to serve 10 PCs.
Anybody can help me in this issue?
    Thanks...

Mac OS X Server does not require a lot of compute power, it requires a lot of high-speed I/O. A separate Boot Drive, multiple data drives (mirrored RAID optional), and Gigabit Ethernet connections to the Workstations.
A Mini bears consideration, but its laptop-type drives may not provide adequate speed if you intend to keep all user files on the Server.
Time Machine can be used to back up the Server drives, and therefore all the User files, automatically from the central location of the Server.
One pleasant side effect of all user files on the Server is that any workstation can go out for service without taking any User files with it. And any User can use any workstation, since their files are instantly available once they connect to the Server.

  • Mac Lock Files on Windows File Server.

    Hi Pro,
got some problem with Mac based design studio who have some weird issues with files locking on a Windows Server 2008 R2 server. After investigation, it is 100% a file locking issue. Some programs including preview, acrobat, indesign, finder or opening files (assuming locking them) and not releasing. Killing all the programs or remounting the share is working (releasing all lock files) but it's only a workaround not a fix. • Integration Mac Client and a Windows Print Server

I want to know if it is possible to install a Mac Printer in a Windows Print Server so that later Users could connect to the WIndows Print Server and install their Mac Printer on their Mac Clients.

I think he means the Windows server will host the printer queue and he want to add the Mac drivers to the server so that when the Mac connects to the queue the driver is downloaded automatically. This is known as Point and Print on Windows and AFAIK this is only available for Windows clients.
When you go to the Sharing tab on a Windows server to add drivers for an alternate Windows OS to that of the server (if needed) or alternate platforms (such as x64), there is no provision to add a Mac driver.
Another point is that the Mac drivers are usually in a format not supported by Windows, such as DMG. The Windows drivers are copied to a repository in system32 for download to the client computers and the files are typically already unpacked (installed) on the server. The drivers would not be capable of being saved in the same format.
So I believe that by default, Windows has no ability to host the Mac driver. He would have to rely on a 3rd party product to perform such a task...

  • Using Mac OS X as A Testing Server

I am trying to use Mac OS X as a testing server for websites with Perl-cgi and scripting languages, but I am unable to figure it out. The technology I want to use is PHP, MySQL, and Perl.
I am a beginner. I have turned on "Personal Web Sharing" in the preferences pane, And I have put the files in my "Sites" folder. I have also, in my HTML editors, set up the local testing server address.
    What am I missing?

You need to enable PHP in the httpd.conf file which is in the /etc/httpd/ directory.
    1. Open the file httpd.conf in bbedit or any other text editor
I did the following from the command line:
    cd /etc/httpd/
    sudo bbedit httpd.conf
    2. Locate and uncomment (remove the # that are at the beginning of the line) the following lines:
    # LoadModule php4_module
    # AddModule mod_php4.c
    3. Save the file and stop and restart Personal Web Sharing.

    October 25, 2011, 6:00 AM PDT
Takeaway: Erik Eckel addresses a common problem — trying to get Lion Mail connected to Exchange servers. Here are some tips for how to do it.
Many technology professionals become frustrated when connecting Macs to Exchange servers. The frustration typically results from a misunderstanding of Microsoft Exchange technologies. Here’s what Lion users and administrators should know.
Exchange Web Services is the key
When connecting a Mac OS X Lion system, the email server should be running Exchange 2007 or 2010. Microsoft Exchange 2003 does not leverage the newer Exchange Web Services (EWS) introduced with the 2007 platform. iPhones and iPads leverage ActiveSync technology, which is one of the reasons those mobile devices typically work with Exchange 2003 servers.
While there are workarounds for connecting Lion systems to Exchange 2003 servers, including leveraging POP3, IMAP or browser-based OWA technologies, those solutions are less secure and support fewer capabilities. Anyone considering such options should remember that Microsoftsuspended mainstream support for Microsoft Exchange 2003 in April 2009. Organizations still dependent upon Exchange 2003 infrastructure should already be planning if not implementing their Exchange 2010 migrations.
    Connecting Lion Mail
Assuming an SSL certificate is installed, DNS A and MX records are properly configured, and the organization’s firewall passes the appropriate traffic, you can follow these steps to connect Mac OS X Lion’s Mail application to an Exchange 2007/2010 server:
    Open Mail.
Click File and select Add Account.
Specify the user’s name in the Full Name field. Enter the email address and type the password associated with the user’s Windows/Exchange user account, then click the Continue button. Mail will search for the associated email server; users may have to click Connect if Mail reports it cannot verify the identity of the email server.
When the Incoming Mail Server screen appears, select Exchange from the Account Type drop down menu.
Within the Incoming Mail Server field, specify the email server, providing again the user name and password.
Check the Contacts and Calendars boxes if you wish also to synchronize those items, then click Continue.
If SSL is to be used, check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box on the Incoming Mail Security screen and then click Continue.
An Account Summary will appear. Review the information entered to ensure accuracy, then click Create.
    Connecting Outlook 2011
Microsoft Outlook 2011 users can configure the application to connect to properly configured Exchange servers by following these steps:
    Open Outlook 2011.
Click Tools and select Accounts. If an account already exists, click the + icon and select Exchange. Otherwise, click Exchange Account from the Add an Account screen.
Enter the email address within the E-mail address field, then specify the authentication method. The most common method is likely the default user name and password configuration. Once you supply the requisite information, click the Add Account button (note Outlook selects the Configure automatically box by default).
If Outlook is unable to automatically configure the account, you will need to specify the server address, then click Add Account.
The Accounts screen will then appear. If additional settings must be configured, click the Advanced button. From the Server tab, you can override and update ports and change the server address, among other options. The Delegates and Security tabs, meanwhile, enable configuring delegate users, digital signing, and encryption certificates.

  • Mac Pro (Intel) and OS X Server

    Hi, everyone.
I'm pretty new to the Mac world. But I've jumped in with both feet. I am now the proud owner of a MacBook Pro and just bought an Intel-based Mac Pro to use as a server for my small business to replace my Linux-based HP server.
My problem is this: I can't boot from the Mac OS X Server disks that I bought from my Apple reseller. The label on the DVD (I have both DVD & CDs) says:
    Mac OS X Server
    Install DVD
    Version 10.4
    0Z691-5228-A
Nowhere does it say anything about being for PPC, Intel, Universal, nothing. It is copyrighted 2005 per the label.
Everytime I try to boot from either the DVD or CD, my machine won't boot from it. I've tried holding down the 'c' key, also holding down the Alt-Apple-P-R keys, but nothing works. I can boot from the Mac OS X disks just fine. And I can get to the install folder from the DVD disk after installation of the regular OS, too. But I'd like to do a clean install of OS X Server, if possible.
Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance...

If they knew the server sw was supposed to be for the MacPro that was a rather big mistake. Especially since the UB version haven't been available before the MacPro machines arrived.
I don't know if OS X Server cost less if bought bundled with the machine - might be the same price as when bought separately:

  • All sub-folders in Mac Mail cannot synchronize with Exchange Server 2010

    Hi all,
All sub-folders under Inbox in Mac Mail cannot be synchronized with Exchange Server 2010. There are 2GB messages size in Inbox folder and 500MB messages size under Inbox's sub-folders. All messages can be sent out and received and it can work in Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 normally. However, all messages in sub-folders cannot be synchronized (empty sub-folders).
Does this problem relate to message synchronization order of Mac Mail with Exchange Server? Do all sub-folders messages be synchronized after synchronization complete of Inbox? The synchronization of sub-folders will not happen if the synchronization of Inbox does not complete, doesn't it?
All messages synchronization is over internet. Can anybody help?
    Thanks a lot

    Hi,
1.please check the mailbox send and receive quota for exchange 2013 migrated mailbox.
2.Please check the email attributes of the exchange 2013 migrated mailbox because it seems to be a problem with that particular mailbox.
3.Then do the message tracking and that would be the only way to find the where the send messages has gone.
4.Please check and confirm you have an enough space on the disk where exchange queue database is residing.
I think I need to create a receive connector in the 2013 to receive from 2010 ?
No need ,by design  exchange 2013 cas server default frontend receive connector will be having an
entire ipv4 and ipv6 segment and anonymous connection is checked by default.
I think I also need to create a send and receive connector for 2013 users to each other?
No need , an intra organisation send connector and the default receive connectors in exchange will be used
for internal mail flow between the exchange 2013 users.
Please reply me if you have any queries .

  • How can I easily set up Mac lab to access windows 2008 server directory user files?

I am wanting to start shifting our school to Apple computers. The problem is that we have already invested significant time and money into windows and we need to run them side-by-side. My initial plan would be to set up an open lab of computers with no users but have some way of allowing students to save their files to a windows directory which would in turn allow them to access the same files from a windows computer. I hope this makes sense and is not an entirely stupid or basic question.
I have logged into my personal directory on our server by hitting Command K and then putting in my user and password. What I would like is to have one item to appear in the shared directory and when selected for it to ask for user and password and go a the required directory.
If anybody has any information that may support the process of the intergration of Pc to Mac for a super low level IT skilled teacher I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Graham

the easiest is to enable fast user switching system preferences-.accounts and require password to wake from sleep in system preferences->security. This way when computer wakes from sleep it gives a password screen with an option to go to login window and switch user.

  • HD setup in Mac Pro to be used as Server

I've searched through the various hard drive posts here on the lists, and think I am actually more confused than I was before.
We are currently running Tiger Server on a Dual 2 G5 and are preparing to migrate to Leopard Server on a new 8-core Mac Pro (I wanted an Xserve, but given the tight purse strings lately, will happily settle for the Mac Pro!!). I will be doing a clean install and then migrating settings, accounts, etc. over to the new machine. I'm solid on server administration, but not so much on the nuances of various hardware configurations. I've been trying to figure out the best hard drive setup, but have quickly become confused by the overwhelming abundance of (and occasionally conflicting) recommendations out there.
I've seen some who swear by a RAID 1+0 set up {two sets of mirrored drives that are then striped...or is it a set of striped drives that are then mirrored?!? You can see my dilemma...}, while others swear off of such a setup; lots of STRONG recommendations in favor of a small OS disk and second data disk (perhaps a solid state drive for the OS and a regular drive for the data?); even recommendations for multiple drives with 2 partitions that are RAIDed in ways that made my eyes bleed just trying to figure them out.
Bottom line: what would you recommend hard drive wise for a Mac Pro that's going to be a primary server for a small private school? I would like the best combination of reliability / uptime and speed. Assume anything is possible (within reason--obviously a 16 bay external RAID is out of the question), and, if possible, include specific drive recommendations (I've seen LOTS of posts steering me as far away from Seagate as I can get because of high failure rates / firmware issues...any thoughts on the WD Caviar Black vs. the WD RE3 Enterprise?).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi, I posted a threaded awhile back about my experiences setting up our small office servers. Perhaps some things might help you in your project.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1697924&tstart=0
Note, on our archive server we are running is a raid 10. However it is running on 10.4.11. If you are running leopard, it probably might not be a good idea.
    Main server: G5
    OSX Server 10.5.7
    boot drive = raid 1
    data drives (x8) = raid 5
    Arch server: G4
    OSX client 10.4.11 (using sharepoints)
    boot drive = raid 1
    data drives (x10) = raid 10
I also STRONGLY recommend AGAINST seagate drives, especially the deadly 7200.11 and ES.2 drives. They are a firmware hassle, and not worth any discount prices of what they are being offered at.
On my raid 5, I've lost 2 drives (within 10 mins of each other 0_0) crushing the raid to pieces.
On my raid 10, I've lost 2 drives. I'm scared to restart or shut down the computer, as this is I guess the issue with the seagate firmware(s) in question. Drive data is intact, however are not recognized, thus degrading the raid.
If you buy external enclosures from sonnet w/the drives (which is good as they come with free advanced replacement; great service) call them and see if they can give you WD RE3s instead. A much better drive.
