Mac OS X disk problem.

So i recently got a macbook (2006) from a friend and he had a problem where the harddrive messed up, so i switched the harddrive. he did not have the original disks for the computer so i but some new ones, The gray disks which i now know there is no way to legally put them on to the system that doesnt belong to them. So i was wondering if there is any legal way to do it, i really dontwant to have to buy the high priced discs:P

I don't fully understand what you are staying here. Have you brought the correct gray system restore disk for your model of MacBook? If so then I can't see any problem with installing them provided they are original gray disks.
Apple Licence agreement states,
you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer at a time. You agree not to install, use or run the Apple Software on any non-Apple-branded computer, or to enable others to do so. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time.
Provided you have met those requirements, then your fine to install.

  • Power Mac G4 - corrupted disk problem?

    The G4 will turn on, but I unable to log in. Tried rebooting. Lost Disk 1 and 2. Neighbor's friend repairs Macs and he suggested that I purchase Tiger and new hard drive. I purchased Tiger, but not a new hard drive yet (don' know what to buy!)
    Inserted Tiger disk and went to Utilities, then run on Hard Drive, and tried to Repair Disk, but "First aid failed" - disk utility stopped repairing Mac HD because "the underlying task reported failure on exit."
    I spoke to another Mac repair person and he suggested that I remove the hard drive and send it to him for disk repair/recovery.
    Was able to remove ribbon cable. I tried to unplug the cord bundle with no success. It's underneath the drive and hard to get to. Also, I cannot figure out how to remove both the case and drive from computer. There's a plastic lever on the left hand side. What do I do with it? And where is the screw I'm supposed to unscrew?
    Should I remove the drive and send for repair? Or should I install a new hard drive and install Tiger on that? If I install Tiger on new drive, what will be left on my computer? Anything programs that came with the computer?

    What type of G4 do you have? You may be limited by the 128 GB barrier...
    When you say you "try to log in but it doesn't boot", this means the system is being recognized. All in all that is a good sign. What I would first try doing is unplugging all periphreals (PCI cards, printers, usb/firewire devices, etc. minus the monitor and keyboard obviously). Then start up holding the shift key, this will boot your computer into +safe mode+. If that gets you to your desktop, run disk utility from there and repair permissions.
    If that doesn't work, you can boot into +single user mode+ and run fsck. This is another disk utility you can use. Here's instructions from Apple on using fsck. I advise reading the entire article, it will give you a lot of insight as to what steps you can take to fix the drive yourself.

  • "Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" - uploading files problem

    Hi everyone,
    I'm running a late-2012 27 inch iMac - 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 32GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with the 3TB fusion drive, OS 10.8.4. At present there is 1.92TB of available storage.
    I have received this message "Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" just before a full on crash multiple times in the past couple of days whilst using WeTransfer to send over some large files (500MB+). The applications I have had open at the time have been: Activity Monitor, App Store, Firefox, and Finder. Over the course of uploading the files, the active system memory has gone from 1.04GB and steadily increased until it more or less maxes out around 29GB, at which point the Page Outs rocket up to around 40GB/s and the swap memory fills up pretty quickly until the computer basically can't take any more and blacks out.
    This is a pretty new thing, haven't really had an issues before. My main software used: Sibelius 7 & Logic Pro X. I've also recently started working with Final Cut Pro X, which seems to have been struggling at points. I've tried closing everything, restarting the computer and not opening anything (specifically NOT FCPX) before attempting an upload. I've even gone so far as to remove FCPX from my system, and yet the problem is still recurring. Both "kernal_task" and "WindowServer" have been running high on CPU when these problems have occurred.
    Does anyone know what might be the issue and how it could possibly be resolved?
    Really appreciate any help, I'm in the middle of a fairly sizeable project and the deadlines are just around the corner.

    There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory. That can happen for two reasons:
    You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
    You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
    Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
    When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
    View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
    If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
    The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
    If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
    The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command: 
    sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
    where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

    To back up your data, either use Target Disk Mode and a cable from another Mac (which mounts your problem Mac as an external disk of the other Mac) and Disk Utility on that other Mac, or — and this is all assuming you either have a slow Internet connection and don't want to use Internet Recovery, or if you have an older Mac that doesn't support Internet Recovery — you can create a bootable USB key disk on another Mac and then boot your problematic Mac from that keydisk, then use Disk Utility from the installer to make a backup to another (external) (scratch) disk.  You can also use that keydisk to reinstall OS X, to repair or to reinstall OS X.

  • How do I resolve LOCKED DISKS problem ? NO ACCESS ANYMORE !

    I've looked carefully where to post this topic,
    and I hope it's the right place here
    (I have already been warned not to post the same questions in different places).
    I have actually 2 internal volumes locked, 2 external Firewire volumes locked and 2 USB external volumes locked. I'm talking about *5,7 To* with *NO ACCESS* anymore.
    It happened suddenly, and I was working on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 internal drive. This volume is the *only one* that has NOT been locked, but I lost a lot of applications, documents and so on on it.
    Each of the locked volumes I am talking about shows,
    in *Sharing & Permissions* (Get Info window),
    the same Privileges :
    — everyone : Custom
    — admin : Custom
    — olcha (Me) : Custom
    — staff : Custom
    — everyone (again) : Custom
    You'll notice that "System" is not there (should be there with R+W),
    and "admin" should have also R+W privilege.
    I don't know why "staff" is here (perhaps, one day, somebody will explain to me the difference between : wheel, staff and admin).
    I also don't know why "everyone" is there two times.
    If I unlock the padlock (bottom right) with my password, I can only
    check or uncheck the "Ignore ownership on this volume" square (bottom left).
    Doing this (apparently) offers *no interest at all* to solve the problem
    (and what does this function produce, when activated or not ?).
    I can't *absolutely not* :
    • Change *any privilege* of any of the 5 items ;
    • Remove (with "-") any of these items ;
    • Add a line (for example "System" or "wheel", why not ?)
    but nothing new is shown after "+" making.
    • The wheel (on the right of "+" and "-") shows only "revert changes" in grey.
    I phoned immediately last thursday Apple Assistance,
    and I am in contact with a Level 2 Apple Adviser who gave me his e-mail.
    I sent him two messages, but he replied me that perhaps MONDAY
    he could find the time to call me.
    Now, first, please tell me if you have any idea or solution !

    You know that, in Disk Utility, you can erase a disk or partition.
    If, in "Security Options…", I choose "Don't Erase Data", and then "Erase…" :

    2) It's said, in "Security Options…",
    that "many commonly available disk recovery applications can restore that data".
    I would be very glad that you indicate me :
    1) the best application to use for that recovery ;
    2) I already own "Drive Genius 3.0", "Data Rescue 3.0.2" and
    (I think it's the best after a try on an internal 30 Go partition)
    "Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery".

    I won't copy here the texts that are on both sites, but it's very instructive.
    Remember that the applications don't only work on files and folders,
    *but also on disks attributes*.
    You'll also have some work to do (I don't remember, perhaps not), by going in the Get Info windows
    and changing privileges to the correct ones, that means you must know
    (I'm not sure, verify please) what privileges are to be set for a volume
    (YOU WILL HAVE ACCESS TO THEM, AND CHANGES YOU MAKE WON'T BE RESET TO "CUSTOM").

  • IPod classic issues with iTunes 9 just may be disk problems in ipod

    I have done extensive testing for several days now on this iTunes 9 issue with iPod Classics. I used 3 different computers, 1 Macbook Pro, Windows 7 and XP with iTunes 8. I had 2 - ipod classic 80GB and 2 - ipod 5th Generation 30GB units people gave me to look at.
    It would take too much typing to describe all the restores, syncs, formats, copies I did over the past few days.
    Bottom line: Using PC utilities I began to believe the iPod hard drives had bad sectors. I trusted the disk testing because I got different results from different ipods. The problems I experienced and what I have read here are consistent with what you would expect from disk problems and S.M.A.R.T. technology on the drives.
    If bad sectors on a drive are dealt with by S.M.A.R.T. I would expect delays in accessing those sectors to occur.. resulting in delays to restore, delays to sync, delays to even skip songs on the ipod itself.
    What may be the case is switching to iTunes 9, discovers when it trys to use the bad sectors. Maybe iTunes 9 is more timing temperamental. I have iPods that pass all disk tests that work fine with iTunes 9 on mac and PC. The other 2 ipods reporting bad sectors on a disk test, can restore, but syncing 3000+ songs is nearly impossible. Sync delays were consistent with where I would expect bad sectors to exist in the process. Delays I noticed just copying a folder to the ipod in disk mode were consistent with the delays that occur syncing in iTunes.

    It is a possibility...
    I will state though that in my opinion the main problem is that itunes 9 is far less fault tolerant than prior versions and is far more likely to preemptively send an ipod into recovery mode when running into a problem when a ipod is plugged in.
    I'd had a couple of incidents in prior versions of itunes when it flashed an alert message that it was having trouble accessing the ipod. Usually unplugging and reconnecting the ipod resolved the issue. Unfortunately this system of handling the issue does not work at all with itunes 9. What happens is that the next time you plug in the ipod it is preemptively sent into recovery mode.
    I've had my ipod sent into recovery mode 7-8 times since I Installed Itunes 9. The last 5 of those in the last week. I've already done the reinstall itunes 9 from scratch and I still had to do a recovery of the ipod last night. Today I bought a new interface cable on the theory that my old cable might be defective. I've been able to plug it in tonight without itunes complaining about being unable to access the ipod

  • Snow Leopard and hard disk problems?

    This may just be a coincidence but I and several colleagues have had problems with Macs over the past week.
    a) My Macbook Pro lost the date/time and wi-fi settings. Next reboot wi-fi was still lost. Now seems OK again.
    b) At times my 24" iMac is running slowly when nothing seems to be hogging resources (eg just copying a 3Gb file to an external hard disk). Time Machine also seems to be taking much longer to backup.
    c) Hard disk failed on a Macbook Pro of a colleague
    d) iMac 27" seems to be having severe hard disk problems for another colleague - Applecare will be visiting after trying numerous fixes over the phone.
    On my machines I have run the Cocktail suite (permissions, scripts and caches) Disk Utility Repair and Techtools Deluxe (no reported problems) but the iMac problems seem to creep back.
    It is like a disk caching process (or Spotlight?) is not cleaning up properly and is clagging up the system. Or maybe a hard disk is close to failure but the problem is not severe enough to show up in diagnostics? In any case I am diligent about backing up at the moment!

    Thanks for you suggestion but it didn't work - are there other ways for solving this problem? Or is it because my files that I want to copy and paste onto my hard disk etc are too big? (However there is space on my hard disk and it works on a PC)

  • Recurring iMac G5 Hard Disk problem and worthless AppleCare

    Hello all! I have a recurring iMac G5 2Ghz (20-inch) Hard Disk problem.
    I bought my parents, aged 52 and 55, an iMac last summer. Hoping this would be their solution to a hassle free and easy computer environment, since I would leave for China for about 1 year. But last month the hard drisk crashed and could not be fixed.
    At first the start up speed slowed down, then the start up process would continue infinitely, then the computer just booted into a screen with a question mark.
    I have a AppleCare Protection Plan (APP) and so I called the Help Desk and they put me in touch with a Service Center (Sittard, the Netherlands). Now I thought, since I live within the proper range of at least 3 service centers (Heerlen, the Netherlands), I could get on-site support (as stated in APP), unfortunately for unknown reasons, my parents had to drag the 20 inch monster to the service center.
    Normally the repair should take 2 days, but instead it took 10 working days. My dad naturally asked, if they could restore the data on the disk. This was only possible if we paid about 2000 euro. So, no deal!
    After picking the iMac up again, the computer booted into the Mac OS installation. This again surprised me, since according to the APP they should at least put some effort into restoring the applications. Not even iLife was pre-installed, which was of course on the computer when we bought it. Next to that the Service Center's Mac OS installation disc was still in the drive; how careless!
    They were quite sad about the lost data, but accepted it, as we all know that these things can happen to electronics. BUT today, the same problem recurred! First the start up process slowed down and now (again) it tries to start up infinitely.
    The hard disk is brand new (1 month), no strange programs and no abnormal use. According to the diagnostic tools the file structure is damaged, but it seems to keep getting worse. The Apple Help Desk guy was even surprised this happened to a brand new disk and installation. He recommended reinstalling the system.
    But, I'm not happy with this solution! A hard disk breaking down, is one thing. But the same problem recurring 1 month later made a couple of alarm bells go off. I'm hoping Apple will consider replacing this machine from **** with a brand new iMac. Since my parents are scared ********, that whatever document they type today might disappear again tomorrow. This is not a comfortable computing experience.
    By the way: the computer has only basic software: Microsoft Office, Skype and iLife and my parents only use those programs, surf the net and send email.
    Any of you had a similar bad experience with the iMac's hard disk, AppleCare or any of Apple's Service Centers? Or does anyone know how to reach Apple by email?

    I had a similar problem with my 20" 2Ghz iMac.
    After replacing the HD and the next 'going bad' the tech realized there was a different problem.
    After discussing it, and the distance to an authorized repairer he offered on-site repair.
    After a lengthy parts delay I was offered an upgrade to a iSight iMac.
    The tech narrowed my problem down to a faulty logic board before offering a replacement. He could have been wrong but it seemed logical with all of the same symptoms.
    Press your AppleCare to replace this computer. They are going to try and repair but insist if this fix doesn't work you want a new iMac.
    I hope everything works out for you.
    Edit: There is a great program that Apple techs recommend called DiskWarrior. It did not fix my problem but it allowed me to get my most important info off of the computer before it went to computer heaven. Might not work for all but it works well for me as I still use it today.

    I have installed Windows 7 64 bit version in my MacBook Pro Retina(13") late 2013 model . It was working fine from last 8 months but recently popup window showing as "Windows detected a hard disk problem" once login. Please check the following image.
    I have contacted Apple Support team. They have tested the hard disk while booting from Mac OS and all the reports showing as hard disk is fine. Then I thought might be it was some virus and removed the Bootcamp partition and re-installed Windows 7 Operating System. But once updated Windows 7 with latest updates. This message showing again.
    Would you please help me out to fix this issue. Anybody faced similar issue?

    When I use the Mac disk tools from the startup menu, it see also the problem.
    Now the big question is : Why I've this type of issue with 2 MBA and 1 Macbook pro 15".
    Their configurations are the same : windows 7 with truecrypt.
    Maybe Windows drastically reduces the lifetime of the Apple SSD drive.
    The 3 Mac are used for less than 6 month !!!!

  • Mac OSX sofware update problems-computer will not start-up any more

    I am having problems & I cannot get back into my computer. It won't complete the start up & just has the grey apple in the middle of the white screen and nothing else.
    I have an iBook G4 with Tiger on it - I am not sure which version of Mac OS X I was on when I did the software update but the one I was on last year when I came to this forum was 10.4.8 & I think I have updated it a few times since then so it was probably as I was attempting to install 10.4.11 as I do not have Leopard yet.
    The problem began when I did the Mac OSX update that it told me about in software update & when it had completed the update it said I needed to restart my computer which I did & ever since then it will not completely re-boot. (Like I said it just has the white screen/grey apple before it gives the option of who you want to login as).
    It seems as though other people have been having similar problems after installing Mac OSX software updates but I cannot find anything here in the forum that solves my problems (or at least not that I can understand at th moment...!)
    I need to access things off my computer & can't. Not everything on there was backed up as I had been working on things that day/week. I also don't know how to access my files from another computer (the ones I am trying to connect from does not have tiger it is a PowerBook G4 & it has Mac OSX 10.3.9 on it).
    Does anyone know the reason for this problem & how to access files from another computer via an etheret cable in OSX. I know someone who says it was a lot easier to connect computers before Mac OSX days but now it seems really difficult. The only way to start up my iBook G4 is using the Mac OSX install disk & I have tried to verify & repair hard disk permissions using disk utility that comes on the disk as well as verifying & repairing the actual disk but this has not fixed the problem.
    I am hoping that I will be able to at least access my files & copy them over to be backed up before I do an erase & install of Mac OSX from the disks. But I am unsure of how to connect my iBook the PowerBook G4 I am on right now. Please help if you know how!

    Go down to the other link and follow the same instructions.
    You must start up the good computer and shut down the frozen one. Connect via firewire and then hold down the T key while you start the frozen one.
    It will show up on your good one, and then install the combo on the frozen one.
    Hold down the power key on that computer to shut it down, disconnect and then start up again.

  • Disk problem in MacBook Pro (hardware or corrupted files?)

    I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a 15" MBP 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB RAM (added 1 to the original setup.)
    A few months ago I replaced the original 120 GB hard drive, as it was getting full and making my computer slower. The new one is a 350 GB 5400 rpm Western Digital drive. I did this myself, following the instructions in ifixit.com, as I have done it in the past with other machines, including my wife's MBP, that is working fine.
    In the first OS install I used migration assistant and recreated the original user exactly as in the old disk. After a couple of months of use the computer started to get slower and presented permission problems that didn't seem serious (used Disk Utility to check). After a while, there was also a report of problems on disk verification, that at one point couldn't be repaired with Disk Utility. I was able to get rid of the problem for a while using Disk Warrior, but at some point the disk problems appeared again and I had to do a new OS install from zero.
    This time I formatted the hard drive writing zeros to correct possible physical errors and did a clean install. Used migration assistant to copy only my user's documents and library. After a couple of weeks of running the laptop without problems, I am having again reports of disk errors that Disk Utility can't repair. Disk Warrior can't access the drive and Tech Tool Pro reports 72 bad sectors.
    My question is:
    Is this definitely a hardware problem that will be solved by replacing the hard drive again, or is it possible that this is being the result of some corrupt files on my user's library (as the problem only appears after a while)?

    If you zero it, yes. That's exactly what zeroing does, "mapping" the HD so bad sectors/blocks are not used. But if a HD is dying, more bad areas will show up. It's time to replace the HD.

  • Hard Disk Problem?

    Hello,
    I wonder could anybody help me with this problem...
    Essentially, when I turn on my PB G4 i first get a globe picture, then the flashing question mark (its searching for the startup disk presumably...)
    This screen then freezes after a couple of minutes.
    While trying to follow all the instructions on the Apple Support page to remedy the problem myself I came accross a few problems...
    When I start up from my Install Disk and try to repair my startup disk using Disk Utility all the repair options for my '55.9 GB FUJITSU etc etc' disk remain grey (i.e. unclickable) even when it is highlighted. It will not let me verify or repair disk or disk permissions.
    When I try to change startup disk the only two options available are the Install Cd itself and 'Network Startup' (which I presume is why the flashing question mark appers)
    THEN , I tryed to use Startup Manager to see if it would help (by holding option on startup), but this opened up to a screen with two arrow buttons which eventually froze with my cursor remaining as a timer icon the entire time.
    Next I successfully reset the PRAM, but no change.
    So finally, I try to reinstall the software from the Install disk, only to find that my HD doesn't show up in the 'select volumes' portion of the installation.
    This is where the Support Site tells me to visit an Apple Outlet for further help...
    Why does my HD not show up here?
    Is it a physical problem? (i.e has some connection came loose inside my laptop? Or has the HD itself popped out of its 'slot!'??)
    What else could it be?
    While searching this database for someone with a similar problem I read that many people have problems with Logic Boards, could my problem be related to this? (Even if my PB is less than 18 months old!?)
    .....One final thing.....would reinstalling software from cd erase the contents .....of my HD?? I am going to back it up on my external HD now, but just out .....of curiosity??
    Anyway, I would be delighted if anyone had any suggestions as to why my (beloved) powerbook is acting this way, and even more so if anyone could tell me how to fix this problem.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Joey.
    Sorry no one has managed to reply. From your description it sounds ominously like your PowerBook's hard drive has failed. If that is the case then the only option left is to replace the drive either under warranty or at your own expense.
    However (if you are lucky) you might be able to use Disk Warrior or Drive Genius to perform a temporary repair. Alternatively if you have access to another Mac, FireWire Target Disk Mode or Data Rescue may resurrect it long enough for you to retrieve/backup your data.
    Erasing the drive, reinstalling the OS, other software repairs etc will not work and only prolongs the 'pain'. Ultimately the drive will need to be replaced.

  • Mac mini hard disk keep crashing

    The hard disk of my Mac mini has been replaced twice during the one year warranty period. It crashed again  recently and I was unable to reformat or reinstalled the OS as suggested in the  manual. I worry if my Mac mini was not due to hard disk problem alone as Apple products can not be that unreliable where by you need to change hard disk every coypu pole of months. And now the warranty period is over and wonder how Apple can help me in this matter.

    Question mark  icon flashes when I boot up the Mac mini. When halfway copying file under the recovery method suggest in the manual, error appeared and can cannot continue copying the file. In some of the trials, HD no longer seen by the Mac. I am quite new to the Mac, and not sure which SMART error you are referring to.  I may try to approach regional service centre in Singapore.
